Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Chao/Xin/Ran/Sang/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong/Kong/Hai/Deng/Kang
Finished polls: Xing/Rong/Nan/Ren/Pan/Qu/Fu/Sui/Tan/You/Sima/Xuan/Chang/Xun/Shangguan/Jian/Qian/Shu/Xi/Yuwen/Cai/Sha/Yin/Ceng/Helian/Zeng/Lou/Mi/Ji/Ping/Tong/Tuoba /Ge/Murong/Hei/Niu/Tao/Si/Pang/Zi/Gongsun/Mao/Qing/Lian/Chi/Shan/Tian/Dao
There's only a certain number of hyperlinks that can be added per post, so the rest of the completed polls can now be found here

Historical Background for 《无名》 (Hidden Blade)
A very brief summary of historical details of note for understanding the context of the film:
The film is set during the Second Sino-Japanese War and WWII. There are several powers in play at this time: the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese Nationalist Party or Kuomintang, and Imperial Japan. Imperial Japan invaded Manchuria (located in northeastern China) in the early 1930s and established the puppet state of Manchukuo. It was here where they hoped to establish a base from where they would continue their expansion into Asia.
In 1937, after many years of conflict, Japan occupied Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing. The Nanjing Massacre occurred at this time. After the fall of Nanjing, which had been the capital of the Republic of China at that time, the Kuomintang moved the capital west to Chongqing, under Jiang Jieshi's leadership. During this time, the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang formed a temporary alliance, suspending the years of civil conflict between them, although their vie for power continued. The Chinese Communist Party set up their base in Yan'an.
In 1940, Wang Jingwei, who was once a member of the Kuomintang but had always been in opposition against Jiang Jieshi, collaborated with Japan to establish the Wang Jingwei regime. They claimed to be the leadership of the Republic of China, when in fact they were a puppet government of Japan, overseeing the Japanese-occupied territory in eastern China, under Japan's control. They established their capital in Nanjing and used the Kuomintang flag. The Axis powers recognized the Wang Jingwei regime, while the Allied powers still recognized Jiang Jieshi as the leader of the Republic of China.
From 1937-1941, Japan had left a few neighbourhoods in Shanghai unoccupied, because that was where the American-British joint settlement and French Concession were located. Many people fled to this area to live at that time. After Pearl Harbor in 1941, the entirety of Shanghai became occupied by Japan. Many cities were bombed during these years, including Guangzhou, which experienced bombings for 14 months in 1937-1938.
During this era of war, which is also called the War of Resistance in China, espionage networks were established to try to undermine the enemy. Hidden Blade tells a story about these individuals.
Characters in the film (spoiler-free):
Director He (Tony Leung): Director of the Political Security Department for the Wang Jingwei regime
Mr. Ye (Wang Yibo): A subordinate under Director He, works for the Political Security Department of the Wang Jingwei regime
Captain Wang (Wang Chuanjun): A captain working for the Political Security Department of the Wang Jingwei regime, under Director He
Minister Tang (Da Peng): Minister of the Political Security Department of the Wang Jingwei regime, Director He's cousin
Officer Watanabe (Mori Hiroyuki): Head of secret service in Shanghai, claiming to be a follower of Ishiwara's faction (Japanese general who believed in the Pan-Asianism ideology)
Mr. Zhang (Huang Lei): A secretary of the Chinese Communist Party's underground network
Ms. Chen (Zhou Xun): A messenger of the Chinese Communist Party's underground network
Ms. Jiang (Jiang Shuying): Kuomintang agent assigned to assassinate Minister Tang
Ms. Fang (Zhang Jingyi): Disguised as a dancer, she worked together with other progressive youth to try to assassinate Japanese officers

some details in All Tomorrow’s Parties ( My Friend ):
Tumblr media
• The 16-day Asian Games mentioned in the film was the 11th Asian Games in 1990, which was held in Beijing. It is the first comprehensive international sports competition hosted by China. This event served as a precursor to China's further development in the sporting arena.
"Have you donated today?" was a buzzword at that time. In order to hold the Beijing Asian Games, tens of millions of people across the country donated a total of 1/10 of the total investment.
• The first person Li Mo ( Wang Yibo ) contacted after returning home was Brother Chen. After meeting his "friend" ( Zhou Xun ) Li Mo, a young literary and artistic young man, went to get a haircut. Li Mo is portrayed as this wandering poet and there is a poem made by him that is read in the film :
Blue Train by Li Mo
On the night, dark as the unfathomable ocean we board a blue train home. The youth, and his girlfriend, are sending the big guy home. Only the blue train can take them there. He says, is is his land of Gold.
This could pertain to China’s railway station beginnings in the 90s. Since Li Mo is well travelled, he may have seen it.
• Li Mo’s character may seem like having ( Zhou Xun ) as his friend is an exaggeration. that he only assumed it because he has poor social skills. But towards the end, she did not make a fuss that the ticket was given to him. She went inside knowing that Li Mo was there to accompany him.
• the movie being played in the last scene is called 400 Blows.
Francois Truffaut's "The 400 Blows" (1959) is one of the most intensely touching stories ever made about a young adolescent. Inspired by Truffaut's own early life, it shows a resourceful boy growing up in Paris and apparently dashing headlong into a life of crime.
youtube
The Director of the Short film had this to say about Wang Yibo :
To be honest, I've only heard the name Wang Yibo before, I don't know him or how much energy he has. I watched Wang Yibo's after knowing it was him. In some videos, his temperament is very cool. I was a little worried about him at first as he is not the same as the role. But after the first meeting, I felt at ease.
He was very polite, very humble, and then very stable, which gave me a lot of space and confidence to put my understanding and imagination of this character on him. Directors all want actors in this state. It is experienced and professional, but at the same time it is always the attitude of doing it for the first time, it is a very comfortable cooperation.

nine fandom people to get to know better 💖✨
thank you @lunaaaylin for the tag, ur my favourite :D
THREE SHIPS YOU LIKE:
ai di and chen yi from kiseki: dear to me (taiwan dramas always know exactly how to do angst to such an extent that i also actively suffer and i'm not even part of the relationship, but the reward is so delicious scrumptious yummy to me that it's worth all the headaches it causes)
tang yi and meng shao fei from history: trapped (it's the first history series i watched and perhaps you might think that's why it's my favourite but you'd be wrong. it's actually because it's the best <3)
bai lang and jin xun an from my tooth, your love (another taiwan drama to complete the trio but omg i binged this show in the weirdest way possible (backwards) for my own personal silly reasons but yes. they're up there as some of my favourites because of their silly boy communication but also because of the trope of cooking for the one you love which i'm utterly enamoured with just like xun an is enamoured with bai lang)
FIRST SHIP EVER:
i had to go check on ao3 who the oldest pairing that i've got bookmarked fics for and it's merlin x arthur <3 i watched bbc merlin when it aired so i'm guessing it started around then but i wasn't reading fic at the time so idk sjfdks. if we're talking first true otp it's probably thorn and daphne from scooby doo and the witch's ghost :D

i'm currently listening to fall in love again by p1harmony who i've been getting into a lot more recently so <3
FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD BOOK:
there's a book called the secret island by enid blyton and that's the first book i physically couldn't put down because the storyline had me hooked from the first page ksdhfks but also a book called numbers by rachel ward, which i read as a teen but i still think about to this day. in fact, i still have it somewhere.
CURRENTLY READING:
the sword of kaigen bc i saw it mentioned on tiktok and it's actually so good like worldbuilding is mwah <3 but when i'm not reading that, then i'm hunting for good fics (mostly the untamed bc those characters are my comfort boys)

Possibly a story prompt...
I've had this idea in my head all day and I needed somewhere to put it, then I remembered that Tumblr exists....
So story is based off of SVSSS and MLC and BOY but lesbian.
also bad at naming especially in Mandarin(I am not a native speaker) but I really like C-dramas and Danmeis and also wuxia/xianxia sort of things.
Title: The Plum Chronicles
Synopsis: Emma Walker, a lively teenager from southeast England, unexpectedly finds herself transported to a xianxia wuxia world. Here, she encounters Chen Wei, a skilled martial artist initially misunderstood as the antagonist of the realm. As they face pursuit, Chen Wei becomes Emma's martial arts master, and a genuine friendship forms.
However, a true villain, Li Kun, emerges, framing Chen Wei and forcing Emma to rid herself of all emotions to confront the threat. Upon returning to her world, she discovers she has been in a coma for years, retaining her fighting skills but losing her powers. Misunderstood by her parents, Emma moves in with a diverse group of roommates – a streamer, an office worker, and a pet store employee.
Working at a nearby cafe, Emma strives to save money to complete her college qualifications. She becomes a translator for wuxia xianxia works online, showcasing her exceptional Mandarin skills. Accidentally sent back to the xianxia world with her roommates, Emma discovers a way to regain her emotions but loses her overpowering abilities in the process.
Now, with extreme emotions and reduced strength, Emma relies on her roommates' protection. Returning to their world, Emma exhibits newfound bravery. With enough money for college, a bus crash thrusts her into a cave, prompting a revelation on how to balance emotions and power.
On her journey, Emma encounters a potential lover, Li Xiu, faces former enemies, and reunites with her master, Chen Xun. A chance encounter at the tea house, where Li Kun is killed by an unknown assailant who seems like Chen Wei, leaves them puzzled. Chen Wei denies involvement, and the mystery deepens.

My review of Lighter and Princess / 点燃我,温暖你
Tumblr media
Lighter and Princess is both a romance drama and a revenge story, but it's also a really interesting character study which maps the parallels, differences, and growth arcs of several characters over the years.
The casting? Perfection. Zhang Jingyi has the air of a princess, but in a subtle and likeable way. And only someone who looks like Chen Feiyu could get away with Li Xun's behaviour. He has that dangerous confidence too.
Li Xun is not necessarily a nice person. At his best, he's determined and confident. At his worst, he's reckless and self-destructive, and the people around him get hurt too. But it's refreshing to see a romance hero who's so justifiably flawed. Even when he makes bad choices, you can't help but feel that they're the right choices. He could set the world on fire and I would nod along.
Zhu Yun isn't perfect either. She's sheltered, spoiled, doesn't always stand up for herself, and enables Li Xun in a lot of ways. But she knows what she wants, and even in her moments of naïveté, I can't help but feel that she's completely justified.
It's not a morality lesson and it's not advice for how to live your life. It's a story about two people being who they are. And it honestly makes so much sense.
The acting is so good?! There were scenes where I was shocked to see this level of acting in an idol romance. Chen Feiyu and Zhang Jingyi are so nuanced and vulnerable in front of the camera. They say their lines like it's the most natural thing in the world. (longer post about this here)
The pacing and the vibes are immaculate.
Tbh I LOVE the costumes after the time jump, especially the turtlenecks and Zhu Yun's work outfits.
The soundtrack grew on me as I came to associate the songs with important moments in the drama. The meanings of the songs change as the story progresses.
There's a vintage quality to the way the drama looks. The colouring is soft. The filters are very light compared to other cdramas. You can see what the actors' faces actually look like including their real bone structure, skin, and glimmers of tears in the corners of their eyes. When the characters are unwell, they genuinely look like they're having a rough time.
Honestly, Lighter and Princess isn't the type of drama that I usually love, but I'm SO GLAD I ended up watching it because it's one of my favourites of 2022
(but if you're looking for a drama where the perfect guy spoils his girl and smothers her with affection, this might not be it lol)
