In a year when God of War: Ragnarok and Elden Ring came out it feels really odd to be telling everyone that they need to actually be playing an indie RPG called Chained Echoes
But it’s the truth. It’s like if Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics had a baby with Neon Genesis Evangelion
If that sounds awesome to you then, congrats, you’re the target audience for the best retro RPG in years

I think the chained echo from chained echoes might be one of my favorite video game bosses from a design perspective
This design while being really cool on its own that fact isn't what makes me like it
It's what it says about Glenn that makes me like it
The chained echo is a manifestation of Glenn's inner torment and self loathing and the way that manifests is very interesting to me
I think I'll break down what this design means in parts
The red haired man carrying the clock is obviously Glenn, it's probably intentional that he is meant to resemble Atlas carrying the globe but I'm having trouble delving deeper into that
The mechanical hands are also notable here as they likely represent the Sky Armor and how Glenn feels about them (you gotta incorporate your hyperfixation somewhere in your battle at the center of the mind form I get it) and how he feels the most free when piloting a sky armor despite them being weapons of war
In my opinion the clock itself is supposed to represent the cycle of reincarnation that Glenn has placed himself in
It's notable to mention that the clock has two wings but is stuck at the ground due to being tied down by Glenn
Glenn is even crushing one of the clocks wings representing how Glenn believes that he is only capable of making the world worse with every action he makes
The girl riding the clock is clearly Lenne's previous life who Glenn accidentally killed which is what spurred him on to replace Timothy in the song of Manaflora thus reincarnating himself
I think it's interesting that Lenne isn't bound to the clock but instead riding it
Because she was supposed to reincarnate
She is a maiden of Leonar
The song of Manaflora was made for maidens like her to reincarnate and preserve information (and chosen one shit) so she isn't holding the cycle of reincarnation back she is riding it like a friend looking down on Glenn for replacing the lover she intended to reincarnate with
Don't know how to end this post so bye

Into the Aether | 258 | Malcolm Landgraab's Tarot of Death
Ah, now I know the immediate reaction is to shy away from the Death tarot, but if you look closely you will s-- wait... no... that's impossible... this is no ordinary Death... Landgraab can not die he-- he is eternal... Oh, my friend I am so sorry... your future... is in real estate.
Discussed: Steamworld Build, Malcolm Landgraab, The Comic Wheel Sisterhood, The Sims Multiverse, Goodboy Galaxy, Octopath Traveler 2, Chained Echoes, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Game Awards

Has anyone else played Chained Echoes? I got it on Steam while it was on sale since I'd heard it was a very good modern indie JRPG and I was able to give it a shot the other day. It's not bad by any means, but it seems to start a bit slow? Did anyone else experience that and does it pick up at some point?

imagine thinking you were your crush’s lover in a past life but it turns out you were someone the guy she was “cheating” on (but she only did it because she was sold to you and forced into a marriage w you)
… and you accidentally killed her and didnt let her lover follow her into her next life and took his place instead leaving the lover to die

Chained Echoes
If I knew it was published by Deck13, I would have skipped over it, and missed out. Deck13 has a tendency to try and reinvent the genre, and every attempt at making it better simply makes it worse.
Except this, and apparently Blood Knight. Blood Knight notably did NOT try to reinvent the genre, and was instead quite fun.
Chained Echoes is a traditional-style Japanese RPG, and in fact, it does what FFXII tried and failed to do, so many years ago. FFXII wanted to eliminate the transition between combat and exploration.
In Chained Echoes, the characters seem like a traditional 8/32 bit pixel world, but can freely and fluidly move in any direction. When it comes to combat, the characters line up, and the combat menu pops up.
The characters are interesting, and diverse, in the real sense, (their roles in combat and the story are diverse).
The combat system adds a couple of really interesting features. The first is Overdrive, (no, not the Limit Break, although there is a limit break metre), but what in the infantry we called Momentum. Momentum is essential in combat. If you run too hot, you lose any benefit you gained, but if you let your momentum drop, you have a LOT of trouble getting it back, and you start to stagnate. So, everything you can do either increases or decreases the Overdrive gauge. Swapping out reduces it, most things increase it, some abilities will switch from increasing it while the metre is low to decreasing it later in the battle. This takes a lot of getting used to, but the game will always show you what the result would be, and even colours the arrows, so you can see exactly where it will land.
As for the swapping system, you tag-team characters. FFX introduced Swapping, and there was nothing to stop you from swapping a thousand times in the same battle. Rather than putting limits on the number of times you can swap, this has you assign partners. You can swap the partners as much as you want. Swapping always reduces Overdrive, which is essential later in the battle, and enemies can Stagger you, which lasts 8 turns, or until swap out.
