IFY Project 3 Week 3 - Produce

Overview

This week was about starting to produce some visual outcomes for our project. For me, I attempted to make some character designs.

Characters

I started with a circle and thought about making five characters who were related to nature in some way. The first one I immediately thought of was a rose to represent nature in the most direct way possible, then a fun way to subvert it while keeping to representing different groups of people. A rose that was a slicked-back punk seemed like a really fun idea so I got to doing some small sketches and the rest fell into place.

As shown above, I tried to capture different parts of nature, different crowds and jobs to show how we all need to work together to stand up against them. Bright colours were a necessity to me so they stand out against a dull world.

The first is Rose, who is meant to be a speedy rush-down type character that represents a lot of the fauna that'll be affected, representing the punk/biker aesthetic.

Trunks is second, a tree to represent the rainforests that're getting mowed down, ruining ecosystems. She's the strong, tanky one of the group and is meant to be a trucker.

Salary is the third, a celeryman salaryman. He's representing the quality of life of fruit and vegetables and most foods as our soil and world is slowly getting diminishing returns and the foods aren't as nutritious as they used to be, hence his weaker, scared posture and tired eyes. He's a ranged fighter, growing celery in the ground like spikes and throwing rulers he got from his cubicle. Foggy is fourth, the clouds in the sky and the ozone layer getting torn to shreds by billionaires. Her specialty is splitting up into smaller-sized versions of herself much like how clouds can break apart and form together. A simple college student, she's meant to seem like a much more everyman representative.

Last is Rhino, a beetle, one of the many animals and insects whom are forced to adapt to concrete jungles and are losing their natural homes. He's a garbage collector as a nod to those doing good work and also to dung beetles and their habits of collecting things.

I also drew a little Mr. Smog, where I liked the idea of making him a small, fat man with a gas mask on as the air is so polluted he can't breathe properly. Purples and greys are used on him compared to the rest to fit him belonging to the ruined world he has created.
