I should have stayed home

Six months post Vecna’s defeat things were going pretty well for Steve.

He and Robin had both managed to get jobs at a bakery that had opened in town, Robin was taking a gap year after all the insanity that had been their lives before heading to college.

Eddie and Max had both recovered well from their injuries, Max would need glasses and Eddie had some pretty gnarly scars (as did Steve) but they were both doing well.

Steve had discovered that thinking of other boys as ‘pretty’ was not something that everyone did, and after a few long conversations with Robin, he had come to the conclusion that he was into both girls and guys.

The fact that he found Eddie very attractive certainly helped move things along for him.

The party had stayed close having regular catch ups by way of dinners or movie nights. The Byers and El had moved back to Hawkins with Hopper, Hopper had wasted no time in popping the question to Joyce and they had tied the knot a few months ago. They both said they’d waited long enough and who knew what the future would bring so why wait.

This brought Steve to the present day.

He had been planning on asking Eddie out for weeks now and was planning on meeting him at the bakery when his shift ended.

The problem was Steve had woken up with a headache that was quickly becoming a migraine.

To try and make things easier on himself he decided to forego his contacts (who knew that so much head trauma could cause permanent damage?) and wore his glasses instead.

Not the way he’d wanted to look when he officially asked Eddie out. They’d been dancing around each other for weeks, months really, flirting and getting far too close for friendship but neither of them had actually asked the other out.

Nothing he could do about it though, so with glasses in place he popped a few painkillers and left for work.

The day was dragging.

Robin wasn’t working with him today, he had needed to deal with multiple rude customers and his headache was only getting worse.

The painkillers had hardly touched the sides of the headache when it had first begun and now that it was a full blown migraine, he was a hair's breadth from laying down on the floor and calling it a day.

He only had another hour before Eddie would be there and they could go somewhere and Steve could ask him out. Officially. He was not going to let a headache stop him. It had taken him so long to get to this point and now he didn’t want to wait anymore.

So that meant he would grin and bear it.

Turning on his best customer service smile, that may or may not have looked more like a grimace at this point, he greeted the next customer that came into the store.

He bent down to get the cake out of the cabinet that the lady had chosen only to be hit with a wave of dizziness as he straightened back up. He managed not to drop the cake, blindly placing it on the counter, only to stumble back himself. Next thing he knew he was looking at the ceiling.

The customer, a middle aged woman who Steve vaguely recognised as working at Hawkins Middle hurried around to him and checked him over.

“Are you alright dear?” she asked, supporting him as he slowly sat up. The world was still spinning and he closed his eyes as he helped guide his head between his knees. “Easy does it. Is there someone else here I can call?”

Steve just shook his head, taking a few deep breaths until he felt he could sit up.

“Sorry ma’am just stood up too fast and got a bit dizzy. I’m so sorry about that! Is your cake alright?”

The woman helped him up and shushed him, telling him everything was fine and to take care of himself. She paid for her cake and once she was sure he was steady on her feet she left the store, but only after Steve reassured her he was fine and someone would be there soon to take over for him.

Thankfully it was quiet the rest of his shift, only half an hour left.

He wanted nothing more than to see Eddie, but his head was killing him and now on top of the migraine he had an egg on the back of his head from where he had hit the floor.

He was determined not to give in though.

Moments later the metal head himself came through the door.

“Stevie! Fancy finding you here?”

Steve couldn’t help but wince at the volume of Eddie’s voice, ducking his head to try and hide it as he came around the counter to greet the older man.

“Hey Eds! Just waiting on my replacement and we can get out of here,” Steve said, giving Eddie a quick hug. If he leaned in a little longer that he meant to, well nobody else was there to see.

Steve went back behind the counter, bagging up a couple of pastries for Eddie and himself to have later and gave them to Eddie.

“Mind taking those out to your van?” Steve asked, passing the bags over.

“Of course! What’s the plan? Are we taking our own cars and meeting somewhere or what?”

Not feeling fit to drive, but not wanting to tell Eddie either, Steve just shrugged and tried to act like he was deciding on the spot. “Maybe we take your van and come back for my car later?”

Not seeming too worried Eddie just smiled and nodded, turning to walk back outside to wait for Steve. “Alright, I’ll be waiting.”

With Eddie out of sight Steve lay his head on the counter and tried to breathe through the pain.

He didn’t even hear his replacement come in until they tapped him on the shoulder.

“You good Steve? You look kinda pale,” the kid asked. Tom, or Tim…Steve couldn’t remember just then.

“Mm fine. Here you go,” Steve took his apron off and almost threw it at the kid before making his way back around the counter and outside.

He made it to Eddie’s van just as another wave of dizziness took hold. Grabbing the door handle to keep himself upright he leaned heavily into the van door as he almost tipped over.

Just as he was about to give in and slide down onto the pavement Eddie was there, holding him up and guiding him into the car.

“Holy fuck Steve what’s wrong? You gonna pass out?”

Shaking and feeling sick Steve just shook his head as much as he could without making the pain in his head worse.

“No-no don’t think so. Sorry. Migraine. This isn’t how things were meant to go today. Maybe I should have stayed home. Just wanted things to be perfect for you,” Steve muttered as Eddie rubbed his back.

“Why didn’t you? If you’re not feeling well you could have just told me.”

Steve was almost in tears at this point. Everything was going so wrong.

“Wanted it t’be spec’al. Wan’ed to ask you out. Fucked it up now,” Steve slurred, too far gone from the pain to filter what he was even saying.

Eddie just wrapped his arms around Steve as much as their position in the van allowed and gently massaged Steve’s neck and head. The younger boys closed his eyes and felt some of the tension he was carrying begin to release.

“Oh sweetheart, you didn’t fuck anything up. Life happens. We can have a do-over another day. For now how about I take you home and we can go lay down and get you feeling better?”

“Ok,” Steve whispered, pressing into Eddie’s side.

“Good, let’s get you home and then when you’re feeling up to it, we can go on a proper date, sound good?”

“So good Eds. So good.”

“That’s settled then, let’s get you home.” Eddie pulled away and buckled Steve’s seatbelt for him. Before he started the engine though he pressed a quick kiss to Steve’s forehead.

“Wha’ was tha’ for?” Steve asked, opening his eyes

“Kissing it better for you,” Eddie replied, face turning bright red as he did.

“Oh! Thank you,” Steve felt his own face heat up in response but smiled nonetheless.

Maybe things hadn’t gone quite as he had planned but somehow it seemed they had worked out anyway.

Did I stay up way too late making a fake screamsheet article? Yes. Did I have a blast? Hell yes. Finally a good use for what I learned at uni and never got to utilize in an actual job :D

The short story behind this really is simply that Vince and Kerry did want to keep their relationship out of the public eye for as long as possible, cause god knows they were dealing with enough shit at the time, didn't need curious paparazzi on top :D When the whole Arasaka/Relic mess had begun to calm down though, Vince slowly recovering, they started letting their guard down a bit more (although Vince remained worried that, should who he is exactly become public knowledge in Kerry's circles, it could reflect badly on him... or, even worse, get him into trouble with or the attention of the wrong kind of people). As we know though, Kerry likes dating Night City's bad boy TM, and is a lot more relaxed about it all - something that probably also comes with his age and everything else he's dealt with and made it through somehow already. So, at some point his current manager is like "okay you guys, work with me here, we have to make this public now. You're not being the most subtle and I'm kinda running out of ideas what to tell the medias to keep them at a distance". And after a press conference followed the above interview and photo op, and Vince hadn't felt as uncomfortable and sick to his stomach in a long while during the whole thing xD Kerry made sure though the media people left him alone. Over time he'd get used to it as well, for sure, because Kerry is certain that what they have will last and he's definitely off the market for good now.

Once voted one of Night City’s most sought-after bachelors, Kerry Eurodyne is off the dating market once again. “For good this time,” he says, and gives ShowBlizz an exclusive look behind the well-guarded scenes.

For months the gossip factory has been working overtime. It all started with a custom Yaiba motorbike spotted coming and going regularly at the Eurodyne residence in North Oak. Ever since we’ve asked the same question: is someone new at Kerry’s side? One of Night City’s long-established rockstars, Kerry Eurodyne has been in the news in recent months more frequently again. A new album is in the works, a tour planned for 2078/79. But that’s not all that’s new and different, with his management officially confirming earlier this week that Kerry has a new partner.

Lacie: Good morning, Kerry, thanks so much for having us here at your home today for this exclusive interview!

Kerry: Pleasure’s all mine.

L: Let me cut straight to the point, because our readers will be dying to know: how long exactly has this been going on? And what are the reasons you’ve been hiding your obvious new luck for so long?

K: We first met in early June, through work you could say. We weren’t hiding as such, just keeping a low profile. Won’t be going into the details here, other than it just feelin’ right at the time.

L: Happy 6-month anniversary then! You already said it, you met through work. Rumors say he was, or maybe still is, part of your management team that organized the collab with UsCracks?

K: In a way you could say that, yeah. Without him that deal wouldn’t have worked out the way it did, definitely.

L: How exciting! What else can you tell us? Can we have a name, his age?

K: I’m afraid, no, you can’t. Not yet, at least.

L: How intriguing indeed… but I will take you up on that “not yet” by the time our next interview rolls around! Of course we would have liked to speak to your partner as well today, ask him all the burning questions our readers have directly…

K: Well, they’ll have to put up with me instead.

L: Hahaha, well then let’s get to our reader’s questions right away... During the official press conference earlier this week you said you’re “off the dating market… for good this time”. Responses to this were mixed, as you’d made a similar statement after the announcement of your engagement to Louise. What gvies you the confidence that this relationship will last, that this is different?

K: I’ve read the comments, and I don’t think I’ve ever used those words exactly in regards to Louise. Or in this context at least. And I’m not here to throw her under the bus either. What I can say is, that meeting my partner was… a revelation. In many ways. He’s supportive in a way I haven’t experienced with anyone else yet, and god knows I’m not the easiest person to handle. He’s doing a preem job at it. Lifting me up, and grounding me in the here and now at the same time.

L: That does sound almost too perfect, doesn’t it?

K: Maybe it does, but it’s true. He brings out the best in me, inspires me to do what I’m best at: making fucking good music. He makes me very happy, more than he thinks himself.

L: Well, of course we wish you all the best and that you stay as happy together as you very obviously are!

K: Thanks, ‘preciate it.

L: What does your future together look like you think? What are your long-term goals and plans?

K: We like to take things a day at a time. He is a very busy man, as am I. Sometimes planning too far ahed only gets frustrating when things don’t work out short notice. Carefully, tentatively though, a vacation is planned. We could both use a little getaway. Been an eventful year, and next year’s gonna be even busier.

L: Where are you headed, if you’re willing to share?

K: The Phillipines, and afterwards maybe Japan.

L: If those aren’t the perfect destinations for a romantic getaway! I hope all will work out as planned, you deserve it, Kerry!

K: Haha, yeah, think so. He deserves it, too.

L: Of course! We wish you all the best. And we hope to see more of you two together in the future, now that you’ve finally let the cat out of the bag. You’re certainly a breathtaking couple!

K: Thanks, Lacie.

Hey how are you? I love your style. I was planning on starting commissions some day. So I came here to ask to one of my favourite artists what advice do they have on commissions? Is there actually mistakes that I could commit or is there a certain path to follow? Thank you! Have a great weekend, and keep creating your art is awesome!!! 💗

OMG Hi!! First of all Thank you so so much for your kind words ❤️❤️ Here it goes:

The most important is to always ask for some of the payment upfront (Usually it's 50%), cause you never know who are you dealing with. And even when you finish the job, I usually always send the client low quality files until I get paid the full amount. It sounds awful talking about money first but let's be honest, that the reason we artist open comms in the first place hahah You can trust the people that request you (I myself never had a bad experience with a client and had dealt with truly lovely people) but it's important to alway be a bit careful.

Write yourself a list of conditions you find necessary to send the client when you agree on drawing their request. If it helps, mine is explaining the process to the client, half the payment upfront, my paying methods, how many unpaid changes they can ask for and how much do I charge per change after... These type of things.

Don't rush yourself too much. Unless the client give you a specific deadline, people are usually patient. I understood that after stressing with several comms in my first times hahah Even so, I try to keep in touch and update them from time to time, just to reassure them I didn't forget about it, just busy.

When I'm drawing a com, I usually send the customers every crucial part of the process, I think it's important for them to take part in the decision making of every step. I usually send them the first sketch (With only the idea, to see if we agree), the final sketch (that's usually when they get to do their modifications), the line art, the flat colors (To see if they like the palette) and the final version. That works for my style, but you decide which step seems important enough to update it to them depending on your own working process and technique.

Try not to underestimate your work when pricing. If you're not in a desperate need for money, value your art for what it's worth. It's easier said than done, and I know that most artists don't do it cause they want to, but because they have no choice; but me myself I try not to price too low my work, and even tho I got a lot of rejections because of it, I end up getting enough clients to keep opening comms from time to time and not giving up.

Find which social media is best for you to get attention and find clients. I personally recommend reddit, but every artist has their own experience and preferences.

I know it sounds obvious but always be kind. Not all clients'll respond with the same affections, but in my experience, when they do, it makes the job so much easier and fun. And you might even get yourself a regular customer.

It has almost been five years (that’s half a decade) since you moved here and you find yourself regretting the decision more and more with each passing day. You had told yourself it would be temporary—just a quick stint while you worked towards a better position and a comfortable cushion in your bank account; surely a better opportunity in a better location would open up soon! But oh, had you been so blindingly naïve back then—not yet jaded by corrupt management, nepotism, and the extent people will go to to ensure they come out on top. Five years and so many opportunities for advancement you have been passed over. Empty words and sorry attempts at sympathy replay in your mind—

“Oh, I’m sorry dear, you just don’t have the right experience.”

“You’re just not what we’re lookin’ for right now. Maybe give it a go next time.”

“He’s just more knowledgeable in this subject matter than you; you understand, don’t you?”

You crumple the paper in your hand and toss it in the garbage. If you slammed the lid down a little too forcefully… well, it’s not like there’s anyone around to judge you for it.

You might have only read the first line but you didn’t need to read anything else. It would just be more empty words anyway.

Rejection was still rejection, no matter how nicely it was fluffed up.

There is only a half hour left before your shift is over and as you watch the hands tick ever so studiously across the face of the clock, you find your mind drifting to the mini chocolate cake packed away in the back of your fridge. You had gotten it as a little treat to yourself on your grocery run, a cheap little $5 thing from the grocery store bakery, but after today… well, you were most definitely looking forward to treating yourself.

A day full of dealing with self centered customers and coworkers that seemingly have nothing better to do than pass their work on to you really wears on a person.

You most definitely would be taking the opportunity to treat yourself! Now if only time would hurry up.

“Hey there, Trouble!” comes the voice of your coworker, causing your mood to immediately plummet. Not this asshole again. You try (and ultimately fail) to hide your disgruntled expression at the man you had been passed over for a full time position, who was then quickly promoted to a supervisory role. How the lazy, corner cutting piece of—no. No. Stop. Take a breath and calm down. Don’t let him know how much he gets under your skin.

“What is it, Robert?”

“Aw, c’mon, don’t be like that! How many times’ve I gotta tell you to just call be Rob?”

You purse your lips as the man immediately invades your bubble to slap a hand around your shoulder, his palm grasping at your shoulder, pulling you against him. You immediately slip out from under him. He’s always been annoyingly “friendly”—invasively so. You’re sure that’s how he managed to weasel his way into his position, despite all the errors and half assed jobs he would inevitably push onto you.

“I don’t know, Robert, but you can add one more to the count. What do you want?” You pointedly look towards the clock and thankfully, as dense as the man pretends to be, he catches on.

“I know, I know,” he shrinks in on himself and you just know he’s about to ask for a favor. You’re about to give him a firm and solid “No,” but he starts back up before you have the chance. “I forgot we had a really important order for a customer that was due for delivery today but Naomi already left and this has to be dropped off today—no exceptions.”

“Okay?” You quirk a brow, entirely unsympathetic. Surely he’s not asking you to take it on.

The silence that stretches along with the pathetic pleading expression he gives you is answer enough.

“No way,” you sigh out, running a hand over your face and pulling it through your hair. “I’m done in a half hour, that’s nowhere near enough time to make a delivery and make it back in time.” Even with as good a brownnoser Robert is, even he has never been able to hold any sway over Deb and her ironclad control of ensuring people clock in and out on time. “Aw, c’mon,” he pleads, “you can take your own car and just head straight home after the delivery—I’ll clock you out!” When you frown and narrow your eyes at him, he goes so far as to clasp his hands together. “Pleeeease??? I’ll make it up to you, I swear!”

Yeah, like you haven’t heard that one a hundred times before. Another glance at the clock and you notice it somehow hasn’t even been five minutes. You heave a heavy sigh. It has been a pretty slow day, Robert could handle whatever came up in what little time remained (and if you gave a silent plea for the world’s most self-entitled, unreasonable customer with the most asinine of orders to come in… well, no one would know). You draw in a slow, heavy breath, hold it for a beat, and then breathe it out with a, “fine.”

It takes all your inner strength to keep from rolling your eyes at the little “whoop!” and jump Robert does. It’s not like you agreed to this with altruistic intentions—it’s the only way to ensure he will leave you alone.

“Great!” he explains at the same time he pulls a rather crumpled and crinkled looking envelope from his back pocket. He stuffs it in your hands and all but shoves you towards the back office, where your bag and the back door are. “The address is written on the envelope, just tell them you’re there for Bobbie!”

And the next thing you know, you’re standing in front of your car, a crinkled envelope in one hand and your bag in the other. You shake your head and blink a few times to clear the daze that overcame you, and proceed to fish out your keys.

“What in the hell was that about?” Sure the man always seemed to run on high but even for him that was a bit overly pushy. You ultimately decide to shrug it off, not nearly invested enough in the man to know the answer, as you get seated and remind yourself that Robert has always been weird. The sooner you get this delivery sorted, the sooner you can get to that cake waiting for you at home.

You cast a glance at the curiously beaten up envelope, squint at it, but when it doesn’t whisper the secrets of the universe to you, decide it’s not worth your job to pry.

* * *

You pull up to an unsettlingly empty looking strip mall. The parking lot is empty save for a stray car or two and most of the shop fronts have missing or damaged signage.

“Uh… did I get the address wrong?” With anxiety rising, you grab the beaten up envelope and read the address: 2435 Market Plaza, Suite 18. Staring back to the desolate shop fronts you acknowledge that it looks right… straight down to the numbers adjacent to each door. You’re sat in front of 12... there’s 13, 14, 15...

Something prickles along the back of your neck. Is Robert playing some kind of sick joke on you?

You need to make a decision. Do you…

buckle up cause this got long and wordy (and admittedly I havent proofread this in a couple months) so GOOD LUCK

With retirement finally in sight, Frank wasn't expecting a change in jobs. Primarily a desk jockey the last few years, he had planned out a quiet last few years with the FBI, tying up loose ends and keeping his head down.

The last thing he expected was a very insistent invitation for a new position, let alone through the National Security Council. To go through an odd and strenuous screening process, interview, and a final face-to-face discussion with a very strange woman. And somehow, he was the best choice.

Or, as he learned later on, the only choice; for some reason or another, he was the only one who gained some semblance of compliance.

Now that's really all he does: keep her in check. It's a full-time job enough even without having to lead a new classified department, all while trying to find, and talk to, literal people-eating monsters. But somehow, despite all of this, or maybe because of it, he's never felt more satisfied.

frank has the fun cliche that his original job was something he had passion for long ago, but had since grown tired of. mostly due to the typical "not what was expected". he worked just hard enough to occasionally be praised for his diligence, but not enough to be promoted. however, once he starts running a new and groundbreaking department, it brings back that long lost energy. it's not an obvious passion, but the amount of minute details he keeps track of is a whole lot more than anyone just doing their job would ever need to know.

the specific job he and enya (and it is just them) do is mostly a pre-PR necessity; some Day, despite various reasons that they shouldn't, are people eaters. most of frank's time is spent gathering information of vague cryptid sightings from all sources. his most useful is obscure forums and numerous IRC channels, some of which he's a frequent poster of (though he's learned how to not post like the fed he is after a few bans).

if something holds a hint of even the vaguest validity, he will respond himself to investigate. though casually, taking more of a tourist role than one of an FBI agent, doing this avoids unnecessary attention and he can determine if a straightforward, government-backed approach will be useful or not. if he determines there is a high chance of day involvement alongside missing persons or deaths, the location will be detailed, cataloged and, eventually, he and enya will respond. the dealing with is enya's part. despite how loudly she'll protest otherwise when stuck in a meeting, she does enjoy her job - it gives her a good chance to be as aggressive as she likes.

most of enya's control is only performance - other day cow to her because her subspecies' elemental abilities. other day have a subtle natural submission toward onyx-necks because of this. however, like many instincts the day possess, this isn't a rule. and, like many of their instincts, is fairly easily disregarded. so while many won't fight, they do so more out of conflict avoidance than any true obligation to. there are a few fighters (and some repeat customers) that distinctly fight back because stubbornness is the strongest gene they hold.

enya's own aggressive and boastful personality is partially influenced by her genetics. obviously, they will frequently do things on purpose cause trouble and be obnoxious. because they can. unsurprisingly, these are the ones enya hates dealing with the most.

a professional through and through, frank took a while to warm up to enya (as everyone does). he very pointedly takes a professional interest in her. enya and law enforcement do not mesh well, let alone the government. she does have, however, a powerful weakness for father figures. frank largely figured this out on his own, and while it works in his favor for getting enya to listen to him, he keeps boundaries very clearly defined (even if enya is clearly miffed about it).

one of the few people who knows enya enough that it's a potential handicap for her. knowing the precise thing to say to have her emotions take a complete 180. however, this works both ways - diverting her anger is as easy as making her angry. so far, enya has not managed to hurt frank. this is entirely because of frank's overly cautious attitude when dealing with any day, including her. the one thing that cause all day more pain than anything else is electric shock, and frank carries at least three different stun guns on him at all times. while in the field, he'll carry a taser and 10mm revolver, just in case.

not her first handler, not even close. but everyone involved has learned from experience enya does better listening to older male figures. its a deeply ingrained concept enya vehemently disagrees with, but to everyone else, is incredibly obvious. frank, on the other hand, maintains a professional distance. he does use the hold he has over enya when necessary, but its infrequent.

addendum to that, people who don't know them occasionally mistake them for father and daughter. enya hates this - despite how much of a dad she treats him. sometimes this is an angle they use when investigating. neither of them particularly enjoy this, however.

Charlie sighed loudly as she swept her eyes from side to side, observing teenagers laughing and having fun while she had to wear a silly outfit and a stupid hat for a work that she needed if she wanted the Corvette to be finished and ready to go.

"Watson, stop lazing around and fry those hot dogs. The customers are waiting." The annoying voice of her boss pulled Charlie out of her trance, causing the brunette to roll her eyes and resume her stupid job. She filled two cups with fresh lemonade she enthusiastically prepared half an hour ago, grabbed two ‘hot dogs on a stick’ and walked out of the stand to go serve the couple waiting for their order.

Suddenly she felt a hand push on her left shoulder, causing Charlie to lose her balance and stumble forward before her body collided with another one and spilled the two cups of lemonade all over the stranger’s clothes. "Oh my god! I’m so so so sorry! I- I- someone pus-"

"Watson, always so clumsy!" Tina rolled a strand of her blonde hair around her fingers while a sneer curled around her lips.

"It’s fine, really. I hate this shirt." Y/N joked with a soft chuckle as she tried to push her wet shirt away from her body without exposing strips of skin to the audience that gathered around them. "There’s nothing to see here. Go have fun or something!" Y/N waved her free hand around as people started to walk away from them, except Tina and her annoying friends. "Tina, I know you pushed her."

"I did not do such a thing! Maybe it was that horrific hat that made her loose her balance!" Y/N lifted her eyebrow up inquisitively with her arms crossed under her chest, but Tina just rolled her eyes and threw the corndog she was eating right in Charlie’s face, "it’s time to clean up, loser." And then walked away.

"I hate that bitch." Y/N murmured as her gaze followed Tina for a few more seconds before focusing on the cute brunette now crouched down to clean up the mess she made. "Here, let me help you."

"You don’t have to. I am truly sorry for that. I’m gonna buy you a new shirt." Charlie looked up from the ground to stare into the stranger’s warm Y/E/C eyes before focusing her attention back on the ground to resume hastily shoving everything back on the tray.

"There’s no need for that."

"But-"

"Here’s our deal. You’re forgiven if you offer me a cup of lemonade." Y/N let her charming smile take over features and Charlie tried to tame the blush ready to settle on her cheeks at that dizzy sight. "This-" she gestured to her t-shirt, "smells amazing." Charlie let out a loud, freeing laugh, amazed at how this beautiful stranger got her to laugh, to really laugh after all this time.

"Okay, stranger-"

"Y/N."

"Y/N." The brunette parroted to roll the other girl’s name on her tongue once, inebriating her mind at how good her name felt coming from her lips, before she introduced herself, "I’m Charlie." The brown eyed girl balanced the now full tray on one hand to take Y/N’s one in a clammy handshake, their skin sticky due to the lemonade that spilled over them, and smiled at her, "well, Y/N, let me just throw this away so I can seal our deal." On their walk back to the ’hot dog on a stick’ booth, Charlie threw everything away then prepared two more cups of lemonade and two more corndogs to serve their waiting customers, before walking back into the booth to serve Y/N, now sitting on the stool right in front of the counter of the booth, a freshly made cup of lemonade. "Here you go."

"Thanks." Y/N took a tentative sip, humming in appreciation at the bitter taste flooding her tastebuds and quenching her thirst. "This is really good when it’s not on your clothes." Y/N smirked at Charlie through the rim of her cup after taking another sip.

"Ugh, I’m truly sorry." Charlie slapped her hand on her forehead and shielded her blushing, embarrassed face from Y/N scrutinizing gaze.

"Hey, stop. I was teasing. It’s fine, really." Y/N focused on the small, appreciating smile Charlie was giving her after she took her hand off her face for just a few moments, before asking a question, "I’m curious, though. What did you do to Tina to make her treat you that way?"

"Nothing. She just likes to torture people that aren’t as rich and popular as her."

"I hate this kind of people. They feel like they are on top of the world when in fact are just dumb assholes."

"I can’t argue with that." Charlie chuckled softly and tapped her own cup of lemonade with Y/N’s one in agreement. "And you?"

"What about me?"

"You’re new here, right?"

"Yes. I moved here last month. And I have to say, I quite like it here. Especially for the people." Y/N winked at Charlie, watching a small blush roll down her cheeks and neck, as both finished their lemonade, exchanging small talks.

"Watson. It’s closing time."

"Damn, time flied fast." Y/N looked behind Charlie to stare at the clock and just now noticing they spent nearly two hours talking and getting to know each other. Y/N patiently waited for Charlie to take her uniform off and put her clothes back on, before they both started walking in the direction Charlie’s house was. "So you basically forced yourself to endure dressing up as a candy to fix your Corvette? Damn Watson, I’m sorry for you."

Charlie snorted at the teasing and pushed Y/N softly on her shoulder, already liking their witty banter, feeling like they have known each other for years. "Well replacement parts are expensive. So yeah, I need to dress up as a colorful candy to have enough money to buy them."

"It’s a shame you took that uniform off. Even tho I like your style, those colorful clothes suited you." Y/N mocked Charlie some more and didn’t even try to dodge the gentle punch Charlie thew her way and landed on her arm as both laughed care-freely. "But if you want, I can help you with fixing the Corvette. I worked as a mechanic last summer."

"You kidding me?" Charlie asked with a small, excited smile, waiting for Y/N to laugh at her own joke but when she found a serious expression, she squealed loudly and side-hugged Y/N tightly, "thank you! It would be so much fun working together on the Corvette!" They walked a few more minutes before arriving in Charlie’s driveway. "I didn’t notice we walked towards my house. Do you need a ride to your house? I can take you with my bike."

"There’s no need. We happen to live really close." Y/N turned around to point at the house right in front of Charlie’s one, "I live there."

"Are you kidding me?"

"Nope." Y/N let her eyes linger in Charlie’s brown ones for a couple of more seconds, before smiling warmly at the girl and clapping her hands together in excitement, "so, where’s this Corvette you were talking about?" Charlie’s smile became almost blinding as she grabbed Y/N’s wrist and sprinted them towards her house and walked them into her garage.

"Nice place Watson." Y/N took a quick look around, her eyes sweeping over a big collection of vinyls, cassettes scattered around on a big table, tools pinned on the walls before her eyes landed on the Corvette parked in front of her. Unintentionally her eyes focused on a picture pinned on the wall right behind the Corvette and the question she asked right after was empty of malice and full of mere curiosity, "is that your dad?" She turned around and watched Charlie break their staring contest to look down at her hands, now wringing together nervously.

"Yeah- hum-"

"Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to tell me now, or ever. If you want to and when you’re ready, I’m here. I mean it." Y/N sensed Charlie’s discomfort and uncertainty and walked over to her to stop her rambling by putting a gentle hand on her shoulder. Charlie smiled appreciatively at her as her eyes sprinkled with unshed tears from the thoughtfulness Y/N just showed her.

"Thank you." Charlie whispered between them, breaking their intense eye contact to close her eyes and get rid of the tears still present in them.

"Now, shall we begin? Show me what’s the problem."

Charlie showed her all the broken pieces she needed to fix, before they started working on a few of them that were fixable without using replacement parts. A few hours later they heard a knock on the door, pulling both of their attention from the broken radio to the short woman walking into the garage.

"Charlie, I know you don’t want to be disturbed but I wanted to inform you dinner is almost ready- oh I didn’t know we had guests."

"Hello Mrs. Watson, I’m Y/N." Y/N quickly leaned her hands on the closed car door for leverage as jumped out of the corvette - Charlie definitely didn’t find that gesture hot as hell - and walked over Charlie’s mom, extending her hand to shake hers in greeting.

"Oh you can call me Sally, dear. Do you want to stay for dinner?"

Y/N smiled politely at the gentle invitation, "I don’t really want to overstay my welcome."

"Oh please, you’re the first person I see here beside Charlie. I would be happy if you stayed." Y/N then accepted Sally’s invite and stayed over for dinner. Charlie asked her mom if they could eat here so they could continue with their work, causing her mom to roll her eyes fondly but to accept her request.

"Dinner in a garage. Quite romantic Charlie Watson." Y/N quipped as she threw a French fry at the brunette sat in front of her in the Corvette. They were sitting in the car, facing each other with their backs leaning on the car door and their legs entwined together on the leather seat between them, just about finishing their dinner.

Charlie thanked the faint light in the room for covering her blush up as she ducked her head down to grab the French fry Y/N threw at her that landed on her stomach and chewed on it, before quickly grabbing one too and throwing it at Y/N, the girl catching it with her mouth with surprisingly no effort.

"So you moved here from Chicago because your mom got a job on the local newspaper."

"Yeah, she wanted a change of scenery. After my dad cheated on her, she was miserable. When a few months later, my girlfriend cheated on me with the school’s jock, my mom decided we needed a getaway. So here we are."

Charlie let the butterflies fly around her stomach at Y/N mentioning her ex-girlfriend for just a few moments before suppressing them and locking the hope already poking the back of her mind away. "I’m sorry for you. Both of you."

"It was a few months ago. We both got over it." Y/N shrugged and smiled softly up at Charlie, her grin genuine, "I realized that if all of that happened, it meant she wasn’t right for me. I know I will find the girl right for me and I hope I soon will." Y/N’s eyes held something Charlie couldn’t quite decipher, but her gaze was magnetic, causing her brown hues to be glued on her Y/E/C ones. They felt a pull towards the other, an unknown force yelling at them to close that distance and act on their deep desires, but the door swinging open made them jump apart.

"Who wants some dessert?" Ron enthusiastically yelled, walking into the room with a tray and Sally walking closer behind him. Y/N shook her head with a soft snort at the hilarious interruption and got up once again from the car, taking Charlie’s plate along with her own and walked into the house with Sally to put them away. Charlie laughed under her breath when the two argued over washing plates, Y/N offering to wash them to return the hospitality, but her mom shooed her away and closed the garage door behind her.

"Ron seems- overexcited." Y/N tried to find the correct word to describe the tall, always smiling man, a warmth spreading in her chest at the cute giggle Charlie emitted as she climbed back in the car, purposefully closer to the brunette this time.

A comforting silence fell over them after that, both idly playing with a tool that was left there once dinner was ready, "it’s my dad." Charlie spoke up some time later, causing Y/N’s head to snap up from the wrench in her hand and looking up at Charlie confused.

"Hm?"

"In the picture. It’s my dad and I." Charlie pointed behind Y/N with her head, the Y/H/C girl turning around to take another look at the picture before focusing her full attention on the girl.

"You don’t have to-"

"I want to." Charlie quickly interrupted Y/N with a small grin, "he- he died a year ago from an heart attack." Charlie felt her eyes sting with a fresh wave of tears, so she looked up trying to get them away, but one traitor one escaped and run down her left cheek slowly. A warm hand stopped the tear’s path down her face and swiped it away. Charlie leaned into the girl’s touch as she closed her eyes to calm her tears down and to revel in the feeling of the girl touching her gently.

"Thank you for telling me. I’m here for you Charlie. We may met today, but I feel like I’ve known you for years." At those words, an broken hiccup left Charlie’s mouth right before the girl threw herself into Y/N’s arms and hugged her tightly.

"Those words meant the world to me. Thank you Y/N." They let themselves enjoy the embrace for a few more seconds, squeezing the other closer before pulling away. "We used to work together on the Corvette. Fixing it would mean I made it, for him." Charlie confessed, shocked at how easily it was to reveal her deepest thoughts she never shared to anyone to Y/N.

"Well then miss Charlie Watson, I promise you we will fix this beautiful car." Y/N patted the outside of the car door and smiled at Charlie warmly, her grin exuding comfort and hope. "It’s getting late. My mom needs my help tomorrow. A few things are arriving from Chicago and she needs help with unpacking."

Charlie discarded the sad feeling collecting in her stomach for having to put an end on their time together and let hope settle there instead at the chance of hanging out tomorrow again, "hey, tomorrow is my birthday. I don’t plan on having a party, but we can- stay here and fix the Corvette- or y’know- just hanging out." Charlie scolded herself in her mind for stuttering, but the blinding smile Y/N gave her, made her brain turn into mush in mere seconds.

"I would love to. I’ll see you tomorrow." Y/N stalled a few seconds, not knowing if she could go for another hug or not. Charlie’s next, bold move, caused her brain to short-circuit as she literally melted on the garage floor. Charlie’s lips are warm and soft on her cheek’s skin, that definitely turned red as soon as Charlie got in her personal space to peck her cheek quickly. When Charlie pulled away, a satisfied smirk immediately rolled over her features as she took the girl’s flustered state in, jumping in victory in her brain for her brave move.

"I’ll see you tomorrow." Y/N dumbly nodded at her with a dope grin on her lips, before she walked away from the garage and walking into her house.

Charlie closed the garage door and locked it, before jumping up in victory as she lifted her closed, right fist up excitedly, "yes!" She exclaimed with a big, bright smile on her lips, "nice move Charlie, nice move." The grin plastered on her lips stayed there the whole time she tidied up the garage and got ready to bed, smiling up at the ceiling as she tried to fall asleep, finding sleep a few minutes later with the girl’s beautiful face pressed in the forefront of her mind.

"I can’t believe you’re mine!" Charlie’s grin never left her since she saw the yellow beetle at the scrapyard. "I can’t wait to show you to Y/N." At the mention of the girl’s name, Charlie noticed her stomach filled with butterflies and a blush formed on her cheeks, the brunette knowing she was already developing a crush on the charming Y/E/C girl.

As soon as the brunette got home, Charlie parked her new car and closed the garage door. It was now late evening so she turned the lights on and put some music in background to start working on a few things on her new car. As soon as she turned around after grabbing a few tools, something fell down from under the car. Charlie furrowed her eyebrows and grabbed a torch before taking a look at the car’s underbody, only for it to literally come to life before her eyes.

"Holy shit." Even if it was a little bit difficult on her wobbly legs, Charlie sprinted towards the backdoor, stopping in her tracks when she heard a soft thud followed by a loud commotion. With furrowed eyebrows, she witnessed her car was struggling with a kite stuck on its head. She took a tentative step forward as soon as the car got rid of the item blocking its vision and saw it crouch down on the far end of the room as if it was scared. Ok, what the actual fuck?

"Hey!" Charlie spoke up softly, only for her car to push itself deeper into the wall, "I’m not gonna hurt you. I promise." She put the wrench she had in her hand in her back pocket and lifted her arms up to show her car she was harmless. "What are you?" She heard a buzzing sound coming out of the car and giggled softly, "you sound like a bumblebee." Then as if she slapped herself in the face, she looked up into blue eyes - Charlie didn’t know if she could classify them as eyes, headlights maybe - with a dumb smile on her lips, "it could be your name. Bumblebee."

Charlie jumped up in fright when her mom’s muffled voice reached the garage, the woman yelling something Charlie wasn’t paying attention to, too busy in running in front of the door to prevent her mom from coming in and see Bumblebee.

"Charlie-"

"MOM! Hi, it’s all good-"

"Oh my god, what the hell-"

"I know mom, I can explai-"

"What is that car doing in our garage?" Charlie stared dumbly at her mother for a few seconds before turning around and seeing the yellow beetle back where she parked it, making her almost wonder if she hit her head and imagined everything that happened in the last 10 minutes.

"What- oh yes! It’s my car. Uncle Hank gave it to me as a birthday gift." Charlie told her mother, puffing up her chest proudly.

"Okay, but please, tell me things from time to time. I’m your mother." Charlie nodded and hummed in agreement as she quickly pushed her mom out of the room and closed the door hastily. She looked around the room tentatively before whispering out, "Bee, you can come out now." And after her words left her lips, Bumblebee appeared once again, staring down at her curiously, before he focused on the music playing and started swaying his robotic hips rhythmically. "Look at that! Bee, you’re a great dancer!"

Outside Y/N was making her way towards Charlie’s garage, in her left hand a gift she got for Charlie, while her free, clammy one clenched and unclenched nervously. "C’mon Y/N, she’s just Charlie. The girl you’re already crushing on. What’s the big deal?" Y/N mentally slapped herself as her eyes looked at presumably Charlie’s shadow moving to some music that she could faintly hear from here and that cute sight instantly calmed her nerves and let a small grin to unfold on her features. "C’mon, you got this." She quickly knocked on the door and walked in with a big smile on her lips, "hello birthday girl, shall we start the… party." Y/N drawled her last word out as her eyes settled on the brunette dancing with a giant yellow robot after she entered the room, the gift in her hand slipping out of it and falling on the ground In a loud clank as she felt her legs almost give out.

"Y/N!" Charlie yelled while the robot magically became an old, yellow beetle and Y/N could only watch in slow motion the girl approaching her and closing the door quickly, making sure to lock it, before grabbing her shoulders gently and smiling warmly at her, "you can’t tell anyone what you saw."

"Then… what the fuck did I just see?"
