The call came at 10pm to be on the jet in an hour, and Spencer had barely even noticed how he had to squeeze his newfound tail into his trousers, far too distracted with getting himself out of Hotch’s apartment in time. To be fair on him, Hotch hadn’t remembered either, instantly springing into work mode and coordinating with the rest of the team, completely oblivious about anything except the case at hand.

“I knew you liked Halloween, but isn’t April a little early?” Rossi jokes the second Spencer walks onto the jet.

Spencer looks back at him blankly. “What are you talking about?” Sure, he’d initially bought the trousers he was wearing for a 10th Doctor costume, but they were normal brown slacks that barely anyone would connect to the show without the rest of the outfit.

Rossi’s just about to reply, but he’s cut off when Morgan pipes up from behind: “Loving the ears, pretty boy- did you borrow them from Garcia?”

Ah. The ears.

He can feel them now, flattening against his head with nerves, a low rumble starting in his chest as he realises that he’s going to have to explain this whole thing to the team- and somehow do it without mentioning his new relationship with Hotch.

Cats sometimes purr when they’re anxious or stressed, he recalls. It’s a self-soothing behaviour.

Spencer swallows. “So,” he says, sitting down next to Hotch for a little bit of comfort. “How much do you guys know about witchcraft?”

congrats on the paranatural max catboy truthers on the win. we now have our second example of a character with two spirits, counting Spencer's odd guest.

so currently we have:

Max seems to not yet be fully aware of the sphinx of promises, and as he had to come thru the barrier, the theory that most complies with the lore is that it entered him as soon as he entered mayvew somehow? as the second he walks into his new house he's already able to hear the hiss that weird spirit (scaredy pete?) makes.

Although that might be the most probable, my personal theory is that he might have already been possessed, and was somehow able to enter mayvew despite the barrier. His mother seems to have thought him since young to be wary of making promises

but, despite common belief that she herself is the one who dislikes making promises, her dislike of promises it doesn't seem to apply to her, as in the same page she *promises* that she'll go with him to the hole pit

(the text obscured by the crunches seems to just be "i love you mom" (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠))

So the rule of avoiding promises seems to be something that applies to him and him only, maybe because she was already aware that the sphinx was inside him and trying to avoid any consequences of it's power, while somehow trying to "train" him?
