September 1982. Marvel released its BLADE RUNNER adaptation as two regular comics issues and in this magazine-size version, which includes a Jim Steranko cover, creator and cast bios, and photos from the movie. The adaptation itself is okay, but with only 49 story pages, it feels a little cramped, and Archie Goodwin's script compensates by adding even more narrative verbiage on top of Deckard's voiceover narration (remember that?). Al Williamson and Carlos Garzón capture the cast likenesses well, although the results are a bit stiff, a frequent problem with movie adaptations.

The adaptation's real star player is colorist Marie Severin, whose subdued palette captures the mood of the film very well. Unfortunately, her color choices, obviously selected for the newsprint version, don't work so well on the magazine's whiter paper. For example, below is a page from the SUPER SPECIAL version. Note how bright the oranges and yellows look.

Below is the version of the same page in the first issue of the regular comic book edition. The newsprint absorbs more of the ink, so the yellows and oranges are far more muted, and the blacks are darker:

Below is the magazine version of a well-known later scene, again showing how the whiter paper makes the color look oversaturated.

As you can see below, the newsprint version once again avoids that saturation problem. Note in particular how the yellow light on Roy and Sebastian's faces in the bottom right panel appears more off-white than lemon chiffon.

The dilemma is that regular comic book edition's reproduction simply isn't crisp enough. (These scans are not ideal, but the physical comic books aren't any better.) The color values are much better, but the color registration is sometimes hit and miss, and the line work takes a beating in places. Williamson and Garzón can be fussy with detail, which becomes muddy if the edges aren't crisp.

It's a real shame because Severin did outstanding work on this adaptation. This is not color-by-numbers by any means — she obviously put a lot of thought into how to capture the visual flavor of the film while also serving the storytelling needs of the comic book medium. The physical production just let her down.
