what are your thoughts on the castle Wels is building this season? I don't know if anyone has already asked but it has Helsknight vibes to me :)

"It's very..." Helsknight looked around and searched for something nice to say.

[He'd been encouraged to do that lately: say nice things about Wels. It was supposed to "help things". He didn't particularly want to "help things", but he couldn't very well tell people it didn't work if he didn't try it first. It deserved at least a token effort.]

"... Red."

"You're too kind," Welsknight deadpanned, clearly unimpressed.

"I like red."

"Red is a very you color."

They stood in bristly silence for a few moments, Helsknight looking up at the castle, and Welsknight looking at him. There was a lot of pointed staring going on. Welsknight pointedly watching Helsknight for any signs of unpleasantness. Helsknight pointedly watching the castle so he couldn't take offense and punch Wels in his stupid face. If their stares got any pointier, they might manage to stab each other just by proximity.

"Did you make it red because it was a me color, or because you like the color red?"

"I made it red because I like mangrove."

"That's the hardest tree to harvest in the game."

"So?"

"So you're not making life easy for yourself."

More silence. Helsknight could feel Wels picking his comments apart for a hidden insult. There wasn't one. He was sticking to strict observations. It was safer that way.

[Think of something nice.]

"The dungeon is cool."

"You would like the dungeon."

Helsknight felt his ears start to heat up, and he wasn't sure if it was anger or embarrassment or exasperation. "And just what is that supposed to mean?"

"It just matches your aesthetic is all," Welsknight said innocently, too innocently. It was a very 'Look! See! You're the unreasonable one not me!' sort of statement. Helsknight sucked on his teeth, and slowly counted to ten.

"Dungeons don't have an aesthetic, besides unpleasant." Helsknight said with what he thought was an admirable amount of patience.

"It matches your aesthetic," Welsknight reasserted, his voice all sugary sweet innocence.

They glanced at each other out of the corners of their eyes. The clenched identical fists. They both looked up at the castle.

"That's fine," Helsknight said, baring his teeth in a smile that definitely wasn't also a snarl. "The rest of the castle matches you."

"Oh?" Welsknight said jovially. "You think so?"

"Mm-hm. Grand. Showy." He flicked Welsknight a slow, sidelong glance. "Pointless."

The two knights glared at each other. They moved nearly identical hands down to rest on nearly identical sword hilts.

"Showy?" Welsknight asked, smiling in a way that showed all of his perfect white teeth, and just a little too much of the white of his eyes. "Pointless?"

Unconcerned, his face and the back of his neck burning with barely contained anger, Helsknight smiled back. "Unpleasant."

The two knights, in near perfect unison, glared at each other. The two knights, in near perfect unison, clenched white-knuckled fists around their sword hilts. The two knights, in near perfect unison, lunged at each other. The two knights, all unison abandoned, wrestled each other to the ground.

Across the river, on Hypno's roof, xB clicked a button on the side of his watch.

"Time!" xB he chuckled. "Six minutes and thirty-four seconds. Pay up."

"No!!" Hypno wailed, burying his face in his hands, "I thought for sure they would last eight minutes!"

"I told you man, they're like cats and dogs," xB patted Hypno on the back consolingly. "I'll take my winnings in diamond blocks please."

Oh yeah the only reason I liked rats smp was again from martyns pov and seeing him make cute little outfits with chisel and bits. And also making himself a maid dress. Obviously :/

But compared to pirates, rats smp is very lackluster

in a rare defense of rats i think theyre a little difficult to compare- you can compare them both as smps by pow creations but the story and genre is totally different. but i would agree that from a story standpoint rats didnt really have anything and the setting/mods that would have made it unique actually ended up limiting a lot of it. imo having a setting that is pregenerated and doesn't encourage building in minecraft is extremely difficult to work with and that's one of the main places rats failed

Even if I may not agree with the way you went about it, I think it's super shitty people are sending you hate. They can't go and say "BAM IS A PERSON FUCK YOU" and then not treat you as a person as well. You've stated you didn't mean any harm and you apologized for the ways you went about things (the negative ones at least, even if I don't have DID I think it's great that you brought stuff like this to light)

I'm really sorry you're getting so much hate though, some people don't understand that hey, you probably shouldn't Do That. And hey, maybe Bam doesn't want you harassing that person.

jokes aside -- thank you, too! you're right, and i'm grateful to you for saying it. i think it's easy for people to not only forget that other users are, well, people too, but that it isn't always necessary to take up arms (wonder why war metaphors are on my mind?) against said users. like, not everything is a fight (or trying to be) -- sometimes there isn't anything to defend against, and automatically responding to even the gentlest of provocations as such will just leave you with a lot of unstable relationships and existential despair. (and some people don't even need their battles fought for them!) social media is designed to be outrage-driven and everyone's addicted to it, but it's good to maybe stop and think about whether you should engage sometimes. there you go! w's life advice of the week! man am i getting so much use out of this soapbox lately or what

that being said, it's mostly died down now that i've disabled anon and restricted replies (which i'm sad i had to do, but my mental health -- and phone battery -- is more important than Freedom Of Speech or whatever), which is good! and i think i'm doing pretty good for someone in my position; i am, luckily, someone who's been in therapy for a very long time, with some decent coping mechanisms and a support network to fall back on. there isn't any need to really worry about me so, uh, don't do that, but i'm not gonna deny that it stung a fair bit. i'll be okay, though. thank you for reaching out! i know i've said it in every reply, but it does mean a lot, whether it's coming from someone who agrees with my perspective or not! so, yeah, thanks. take care, mate.

Lore:

HC! Snail is a family of gastropods from the planet Exraterra. Snails are born in terrarium nests surrounded by their parents and their escargotiore (clan);

When Snails are old enough some choose to leave in little meteorite space ships to find humanoids to become their adopters, these escargotiores are called walks (Grian lore and my interpretation); They grow strong mutual bonds by imprinting (like Pokémon & Trainer "friendship");

Snails love annoying their adopter's friends, I believe this is because they can get attached to people really easily, but they use it as a form of reconn for the safety of their siblings (Grian's lore and also who wouldn't get attached to the hermits);

It has been documented that little G likes to eat buildings, materials include: rock types. They eat their meteorites (Gem's lighthouse);

Snails have the power to make duplicate illusions. But evidence is insufficient, documented once (little G seen at Gem's lighthouse and Doc's swamp at the same time);

Snail can teleport instantly if broken (When Grian broke them free from Gem's raft);

Little G is sometimes referred to as a fish, but we don't know if this is due to an unreliable narrator, or some hidden meaning (Grian called little G a fish when he noticed them on Gem's raft);

Snails can build very rudimentary things (Grian, Gem and Scar's stories)

Larry Jr is a Mega Giant snail, built by Ladypink and little G to prank scar.

Snails can be moved, we haven't been able to determine if this can be done by luring as well from picking them up, we believe it's mostly by picking them up due to the lack of a trail (Gem moving little G from her lighthouse to her raft and when gem rescued Ladypink Grian has also picked up little G multiple times);

how did you get the confidence to write fanfiction? i always worry that i won't portray the characters properly so any ideas or wants to write fanfics that i have go away or i talk myself out of it :(

Well! First and foremost: Most people don't start writing,,,, anything with confidence. Let alone fanfic, where you know other people are going to be looking at it, with their own ideas of how the characters are supposed to act and feel influencing what they're coming to the story with. My first fanfic I was very insecure, which I feel like was evident, reading through the author's notes now. Apologies whenever something that required a lot of suspension of disbelief happened, a poll so readers could decide the ending so I wouldn't disappoint anybody, only to end in me writing and posting three different endings. Long justifications for why I chose certain things in the author's notes. The fic nowadays reads to me like a very rough apology.

"Hi I'm sorry I tried. Be kind I'm very scared."

But the thing about writing that fic was, it was the writerly equivalent of jumping into the deep end of the pool for the first time. After I bobbed back to the surface and realized a shark hadn't like, taken my legs off while I was down there, jumping in again got easier. And kept getting easier. And now I just write and post things.

There's kind of two schools of thought that I've seen people subscribe to, when it comes to taking the first leap. The one that's really popular around here on Tumblr is: Do it scared. It is simple and straightforward. You are scared. You will be scared. You probably never won't be scared. So do it scared. Write your thing, close your eyes and hit send [either to post it or to share it with one or two friends, or even just hitting the "save" button and not deleting it]. Get scared, do it, close your eyes, finish. When you open your eyes again and nothing terrible has happened, you can breathe a sigh of relief and do it scared again. It's a little nerve-wracking at first, but the idea is giving your mind the association of jumping and not falling. I did it and I didn't fail, therefore it is safe to do it again.

The other school of thought [the one I specifically subscribe to] is: Do it once. What you think or feel about it doesn't matter. What matters is you did it once. Maybe it will be hell, or it'll suck terribly. Maybe you're really excited! And it turns out great! Maybe its a wild ride of ups and downs, and by the end you need a few months to catch your breath and decide if it was worth it. Regardless: you did it once. Now you know, if you want to, you can do it again. Now you can decide if its worth doing again. For me, the euphoria of finishing a project always far outweighs the trouble getting there, so the step forward of "Do it once" is powerful for me. And that can be broken down too. "Write one chapter." "Draw one drawing." "Clean one room in the house." There is no pressure to continue if its really that terrible, but you at least get to decide if one was worth it [and a solid 9 times out of 10, one was worth it enough to do it more.]

Now, all that said, if what you're worried about is writing the characters right and nothing else -- don't worry too much. Most people care less about how true to life the characters are, and care a lot more about consistency in the story. An example from RnS: In canon, Helsknight is a cartoonish villain with one motivation, and that motivation is taking over hermitcraft Doofenschmirtz style. To date, no one has come into my inbox demanding I change him, because he's so OOC he's basically an OC at this point. What people have come into my inbox about though, is "Hey, you established X in this chapter, but he said Y in this chapter. Was there a reason for that?" which is them saying, "Why didn't you keep your character consistent?" If you tell your audience what the expectations are for the story and you stick with them, they will stop caring about OOC moments and characterizations, and will trust you're going somewhere with your writing. Suspension of disbelief, your powerful friend! They put the world on their shoulders and carry and everybody watches and claps.

If you're also worried about consistency, then start out with one shots! There's a lot less room for error, no large, sweeping character arcs to keep track of. And stringing a bunch of one-shots together can give you practice with character consistency and progression without committing to something massive and overarching. If you're truly worried about making the characters exactly like Canon [or the Canon in your head], I recommend making little lists of character traits, or important things you want to keep in mind. At that point you're scared of your own consistency, and you just need a framework to keep yourself consistent enough for yourself, if that makes sense?

Had the thought of Joel smallishbeans hels being almost like a version of narcissus or some other Greek hero. He's tall, almost too tall, he's handsome, almost too handsome. He's often spoken about like he's a gift from the gods, but it's a death sentence. Respect turns to jealously quickly in hels after all

No but I do really like this Narcissus/Adonis style paragon of beauty and perfection, and he is doomed to walk a fine line between needing attention to thrive, and too much attention inevitably leading to downfall. It's like when Hamlet recognizes he's in a tragedy, but he has the will to break the fourth wall and fight it. He can't fully predict how everyone else will act though, and will always have mixed success. Doomed By The Narrative vibes in a self aware character who's trying to beat the allegations.

patron saint of grief. this isn't meant to be an insult it's a pos thing! your writing leads people through all the stages in a way, but helps people cope with them as well. the chapter that stands out in my mind was 27 of rns i believe that really shows this.

Oh! Saint of Grief is really interesting, especially given the extra context. I think I'd be less a Saint of grieving (as in the idea of comforting already earned grief) and maybe instead it's for grief you're preparing yourself for, living vicariously so your heart can prepare for it in a controlled way, and like you said, watch other people cope in their various ways to teach yourself how to cope.

That's such a very kind saint to be.

Omg silver you can't just hide this in the tags. This is so fire. Do you think ppl would have a nickname for him if this was the case? So he has the new name he gets every time but for ease ppl refer to him as some kinda nickname?

I think if we're really going to lean into this, it should work the same way as the epithets given to Greek gods, that would prioritize different aspects of that god [like Aphrodite Gamelii -- presiding over and protecting marriage vs Aphrodite Urania -- the heavenly and spiritual representative of love]. So he would be Joel Narcissus, Joel Adonis, and would probably style large aspects of his aesthetic and personality off of the new epithet he took.

What's nailmasters folly out of curiosity? Hope I spelled that right

You did spell it right!

Nailmaster's Folly is a Hollow Knight fanfic that I dropped for over 4 years, and then inexplicably picked back up again this year. I have,,,, another few chapters ready on it to post I just haven't posted them yet because, as is my want, I keep forgetting the fic exists.

The fic centers on Nailmasters Oro and Mato, estranged brothers who, after a chance encounter in the Colosseum of Fools, are forced to deal with the reason for their estrangement. In the process, Oro must face down the anger and resentment issues that caused everything in the first place, and Mato must learn a thing or two about the ingloriousness of (almost) dying in battle.

It's the only Hollow Knight fic I've ever put even a remote amount of effort into, and whenever I think I've gotten it beaten, much like Oro's anger issues, it likes to stand back up and kick me in the face.

Is dnd fun? :o I wanna play so bad but every session or group I join falls apart fast

DnD is very fun! As long as you have a decent table and a decent DM. I've only had good experiences with it, barring once or twice. It's collaborative storytelling at its finest.

Tbh I really like DMing. Sometimes I think really hard about posting 2-shot campaigns on here to just invite random people to. But I think setting schedules for something like that would be murder, so I've yet to try it.

I do hope you find a group to stick with! There's a lot of Discord servers dedicated to exactly that: gathering random people together to play. I recommend checking into those!
