smollet is definitely protective in the literal physical sense, but when it comes to the actual romantic relationship theres very little jealousy. a military captain simply has bigger things to worry about. and as weve discussed before, i/kristopher would never get jealous either cause i haaaaate the concept of romantic jealousy. rip to monogamous people but im built different

so! as you've not specified anyone specific to discuss, time for the idea I've been rotating in my mind a lot lately. (well, actually I've been rotating it in my mind since november of 2020, but it's resurfaced recently for unknown reasons.)

it's always been one of my design points that Smollett has a partially hidden element of a Mysterious Backstory™, somewhat because I find it interesting to speculate about, and somewhat because RLS gave us nothing at all. and my favorite way of drawing that into him is that he at one point had pierced ears, but at some point the piercings have closed over.

I've always thought of his stiffness as a bit of a concealment of some kind, since a captain genuinely that good and that virtuous, in my opinion, would probably not have ended up doing what he has to do to make the story function. so those scars would play into it a little - from a distance, he looks like what he maintains that he is, but up close, something's a little bit out of the ordinary.
