So I was watching the new La Pluie episode and seeing everyone’s reactions and it finally hit me as to why I love Tai and his narrative so much.
The narrative is allowing him to make the worst, the most ugly choice, but more than that. It is letting him be unlikeable. Especially in a non traditional way.
The most memorable non likeable protagonist to me is Emma Woodhouse from Emma (I think I also might have Austen on the brain from Step By Step don’t judge me). She is vain and arrogant and generally doesn’t listen to a lot of people until she has finally alienated so many people in her life that she is forced to stop and to ask herself, “am I the problem here?” When she realizes the answer is yes, she goes about at least attempting to improve. She apologizes to the people she’s hurt, trying to be more humble and learn more humility and to generally be a better person. She is not the most amazing person by the end, but she is better and she will continue to work on herself the further in life she gets.
I see a similar thing happening to Saengtai. While he is not rude or vain or arrogant (hence non traditional unlikability) but he is that guy who will just, not say anything. He is the person who will ghosts his kind of ex because he doesn’t know how to start the hard conversation. He can’t help but make a lot of things about himself and his struggles and his problems, even when they’re not. I mean, he holds a grudge against his mother for 2 years about the divorce and her getting remarried but never bothers to attempt to ask her about anything, about how she feels about the divorce or her remarriage. He is selfish and self cantered and conflict avoidant to fault. He feeds into Tien’s belief that his feelings don’t matter by never noticing when his brother is struggling, up to and including Tien’s feelings for Lomfon. Again this might be unintentional but it is no less selfish.
I really love that about his character. That he is allowed to act that way without being portrayed as the bad guy or the villain. He is now being afforded the opportunity to grow and reflect upon himself. He starts that this episode with apologizing to Tien and having that open discussion with his parents and brother. His parents had to start the conversation because of how much they left out of their initial explanation of their divorce to their children but it is still proves to be a learning opportunity for him and I believe Tien as well. I don’t mind this as I think it would be good (though a little cliche and trope-y) for Tai’s big attempt at communicating and communicating effectively be with Patts (I love cliches and tropes and I’m not sorry about it haha). His parents know and understand in the way that Tai thinks Patts should already and are thus able to better understand and predict what Tai is upset about and what he needs to talk about the most. Patts however, has no such ability.
I’m almost hoping that Tai’s first attempt kind of fails as no attempt at a conversation is perfect and miscommunication happens, so it’s important it make sure you try and again and again, especially when you know the other person is as important to you as Patts is to Tai. Plus Patts deserves to have Tai fight for him. He’s been through so much and I think it would go a long way for Patts to be able to see that Tai isn’t going to give up when his first try goes badly.
I also really liked his meeting with Lomfon. Perhaps not the ending, but I don’t blame him for Patts’s reaction either. Tai had no reason to believe that Patts would show up. He just wanted to clear the air with Lomfon and offer his support and friendship. Both Lomfon and Tai are in a very similar position to one another so it’s no surprise to me that Tai finds it the easiest to talk with him and forgive him.
I can’t wait to see Tai develop even more next episode. He is taking responsibility for his actions, for what he is has said and what he hasn’t. I also hope that he will continue to work on it through the episode. This show’s writing has been on point this entire time and so I’m really hoping for a good ending that ties everything together.

Top 5 hands moments!
Just hands involved in any way. Can be a second or the full focus of the scene
Alright last round of 5 favorite hands moments here we go!
La Pluie

I'll just drop Essay 1 and Essay 2 on this matter right here....
The Sign

Every. single. one. Every single hand moment has been good, even the ones that aren't focused on. But I think the real kicker for me was is when Tharn gently wipes the sweat from Phaya's upper lip after Tharn was stabbed. Phaya and Tharn are touching quite quite often, but I feel like Tharn is not usually the one that initiates the contact, usually he is reciprocating (even when he tugs Phaya's cap and his shirt, that's a response to Phaya having tugged Tharn's cap and shirt before). It's also just such a great characterization moment because as someone (edit: @timotey) said Tharn's base instinct is to protect with his body rather than to try to harm someone else's. Tharn does not shoot at the suspect once, and this little moment where Tharn is injured and Phaya is visibly upset, Tharn still takes a moment to take care of Phaya.

Uhhhh there are so many? But olive oil scene was the Scene of All Time for me so the hands in that were of particular note and notice.
Sing My Crush

Another show with a lot of good hand moments. The way Im Han Te brushes his fingers over Han Baram's knee here is incredible,
My Personal Weatherman

Another phenomenal hands piece. Honestly, shout out to all these shows about people getting in to relationships for granting me an abundance of hand imagery. I love this little playful touch on Yoh's cheek. These boys are great together BUT I NEED THEM TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO FUCKING COMMUNICATE. I would, however, like to thank My Personal Weatherman for dressing Segasaki like a dyke, truly you understand my needs.
BONUS: 5 Favorite Hand Moments That Aren't the Focus of the Scene
Since you said they could be short moment's I'll give you a couple I don't think people always focus on but that I loved watching:
Tharn resting his hand on Phaya's leg at the festival in The Sign, Ep 3
Tumblr media
2. King running his hand up and down Uea's shoulder in Bed Friend, ep 4
Tumblr media
gif by @gunsatthaphan
3. Han Baram hooking his arm around Im Han Tae's foot in Sing My Crush
Tumblr media
gif by @wanderlust-in-my-soul
4. Kenji leaning over Shiro to grab a 1 yen coin off the floor in What Did You Eat Yesterday? Episode 9
Tumblr media
These two barely ever touch so when they do I get so fucking excited and happy, right before this Kenji is fully leaning across Shiro's entire lap to pick something up off the floor. It is glorious!
5. Tin's loser little fist pump when Charn agrees to marry him in Laws of Attraction, Ep 8

ASK ME MY TOP 5 OF ANYTHING BL 2023
121 notes · View notes
This post (link) by @respectthepetty (hope you don't mind the tagging) made me think back at all the missed poly oppurtunities BL has given us and I decided to make a list.
First Shout Out to the Only Confirmed Poly So Far (Both F/M/M): 3 Will Be Free and Me, My Husband and My Husband's Boyfriend (the last one I have not watch so be cautious I do not know the ending)
There is two BLs that hint at a poly solution (M/M/M): My Mate Match & Tinted With You.
It's only a hint but if you are starving for it it will do.
NOW ONTO THE MISSED OPPURTUNITIES:
CHOCO MILK SHAKE: The title is in all caps because I am still so bitter about it, the second couple came out of nowhere for me and I am bitter as hell!!!!
Light On Me: The only good love triangle I ever saw and one of the only ones that actually made me believe that a poly ending could work in canon.
Happy Ending Romance: I am not as emotional about this one, but I do remember watching and thinking why can't he just date both?
Oh My Assistent: Same as above
Gen Y: Mark-Kit-Wayo: LAST BUT NOT LEAST! I am so mad about this, it was right there. All the peaces laid out, Wayo deserved it. And so did I Damn It!! I have been wanting to see the actors that play Wayo and Mark play a ship together since I watched the first 2 Moons and thought that they had super great chemistry.
Regarding the La Pluie one, the one in the linked post, I did thought about it, but I think it's not the right drama for it.
Not just because I want Tien to be happy. Even though I really do!! But also because I feel like this would go against what the show is trying to say with the soulmate plot.
If there was another character that had scene with Tien and that could filled the role of a secondary love interest then maybe it could work but as it, I don't really want it, even though I do see it, don't get me wrong.
Anyway suggestiongs of more dramas are welcomed. I for one have a few that are less missed oppurtunities and more like "There's An Idea" poly ships. If you guys want to read that list is:
Not Me: Gram-Black-Todd (I love this one - but Black is also really shippable, I am following a Black-Yok fic with great pleasure)
Until We Meet Again: Read two fics about the two couples dating each other or having a "one night stand" of sorts and thought the idea was neat.
Bad Buddy: I never went there but I know there are fics with a poly relationship between Pat/Pran and either Wai or Korn (or both). Not too mention the fics the Our Skyy 2 crossover most certantly brought about.
History 4 Clost To You: When I first watched it I had a moment during the first scene where I imagined the plot of the drama to be Ten and Li Cheng competing for Xing Si affection with a poly ending and I fell in love with the idea.

currents.23/2023
selections from my week in media [4-10 june 2023]
Tumblr media
[anticipating]
Still excited for the SHINee comeback, even though it won’t be the same without Onew.
[listening]
The Feeling / SHINee
[reading]
Cafe AU Lait comics anthology - Coffee shop AU comics collection. I especially liked Inbetween by Tim Delaney, See You by @hawberries, On the House by Pi and Teloka, and RX Coffee by Michel Gerencir.
Idol!Rain-verse series by YourFavoriteNeedsAHug - One of my favorite Love in the Air fic series.
[watching]
Bokura no Shokutaku - I’m sad the main story is over (a special episode will be airing this coming week). What a quiet comfort of a show it is.
Kingdom: Legendary War - Finished up the last two episodes this week. I was side-eyeing the voting process quite a bit throughout. Way too much weight was given to the fan voting, making it a pure popularity contest in the end. I get that fan engagement is important, but the way it was organized, the winner was a given from episode one. That said, the performances were all amazing. I got fully into ATEEZ because of the show, and got to know some older groups I’d heard of but hadn’t had the time to dive into.
La Pluie - I love it. The soulmate trope is one of my favorites and so far I like this particular version of it.
Our Skyy 2 - The BB/1000 Stars crossover was so so good. Revisiting Tian and Phupha, seeing their characters grow even more, with that amazing ending to cap it all off was the highlight of the week.
Step By Step - It’s an up and down kind of show LOL. I am currently rooting for Put/Pat even though I know they aren’t endgame. Best I can hope for is they part as friends, without any character assassination of Put. My episode 7 notes are here.

Many of the calamities in Africa were caused by white people.

White people came and took many animals for ivory or fur, so the ecosystem got wrong.

La Pluie and The Kind One
So I finally caught up on the show after missing last weeks episode and I have to say I really enjoyed both episodes. I love that Patts and Tai have decided to be together, not because they’re soulmates but because they love each other and genuinely want to be together. This weeks episodes starts those tentative steps, allowing them and Nara to make peace with each other and allow Patts and Nara to grieve their relationship so they can truly move on. The ending of relationships are sad and no matter how it ends, it is okay to be sad about it ending and I thought that was really nice of the show to include.
The thing that really struck me with this weeks episode, is the introduction of the fact that Tai and Patt’s grandmother (and by extension, Patts himself) used to be neighbours. That during the time when Tai’s parents were getting divorced, that Tai had someone anonymously on his side, and that that someone was Patts. It might strike as a little odd to include, given that the show has spent so much time deconstructing the idea of the soulmate. To suddenly introduce the idea that, apparently, destiny has been trying to bring them together for years, though it didn’t work out when Patts was just “the Kind One”.
These small interactions give Patts and Tai insight on each other that they might not have ever been able to know about each other otherwise. That ultimately, Patts understands Tai’s feelings better than Tai thinks he does. Patts has watched it unfold. Even though he didn’t know it was Tai or his family, he has been the persona attempting to help someone through the separation of their parents and so he is able to try and help Tai in some small way. Knowing who the other party in these interactions, does recontextulize a lot for them, but in the end, for the better, not for the worse. Just one more thing for the two to love about each other. That they would each in term attempt to help a perfect stranger through a difficult time in their lives in any way that they can.
I get where the show is coming from though and I think narratively speaking, it actually makes a lot of sense and ultimately feeds back to what I think is one of the shows central themes: soulmates are not born, they are made. The idea that it takes work and honesty and communication, the same way any relationship does. That a relationship needs a solid foundation in order to thrive, and so does a soulmate relationship.
To introduce now that destiny has been at work the whole time might seem like a cop out or render the work the show has done to deconstruction the soulmate trope useless, but I don’t think that it does. For one very important reason. The timing at which it was introduced. If the show was really trying to say that Patts and Tai are really destined for one another, this would have come up much earlier in the narrative. Perhaps not for Patts and Tai, but for the audience certainly. We would have been told, like very near the beginning, that these two were at one point, each others secret pen pals and were helping each other go through these events. But we weren’t. Instead it was introduced in episode 9 of a 12 episode drama. Perhaps if it was going to be the sole focus from here on one, it would that worse thing, that cop out and regression in the show’s message, but we as the audience already now that the end game conflict is going to revolve more around Lomfon (and likely Tein, as opposed to Tai and Patts, but I am even less articulate about those thoughts than I am about these so you know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
Instead I posit that it is trying to build on the established narrative. These events happened and yes it could be destiny trying to pull them together. I (surprisingly) don’t disagree with that idea. It’s established that Patts and Tai already have their rain connection when this happens, so perhaps it is destiny trying to put them in each other’s paths, however, like with the rain connection, it is only trying to do that. It is not saying that they have to be together, like the common belief that the soulmate connection has. It is only placing Patts and Tai in front of each other and what they chose to do after that is up to them. See again about soulmates being made. Destiny can do all it likes, but that still doesn’t mean Patts and Tai would end up together. They still need to put in the work that helps their relationship to be successfully.
This is in contrast with the destiny keychain. The apparent deus ex machina of Lomfon’s story. Unlike the Kind One, it was introduced much earlier in the story and whether the narrative choose to focus on it in that moment or not, has much more significance to the story than Patts and Tai being pen pals. Why? Because while this show wants to break down certain tropes and story beats, it does play in other ones. While we might not know who Lomfon’s saviour was, we know that it’s likely to be one of the three candidates (Tai, Tein or Patts. For my money, I think it’s either Tein or both Tai and Tein, but that’s another post for another time). And because we know Lomfon is about to become the central figure of the story, it’s about to become a LOT more important to the narrative. The pen pal subplot, not so much. It’s going to end here, maybe become a funny story that the two tell at family get togethers but nothing more.
It’s narrative importance lies with what it tells us about Patts and Tai and not about what the show has to say about the soulmate trope and it’s subversion of it. I think it’s ultimately meant to functions as an understanding moment, for the audience, for the characters, about why their relationship works when they put in the effort to maintain it. Each was willing to put in the work for a perfect stranger and expect nothing in return and their relationship can be even better when they know and understand each other.

So I want to talk about Tai for a second.
Specifically I want to talk about this moment right here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tai says point blank that he’s wanted to get rid of his hearing loss but he doesn’t feel any better now that it’s gone.
Of course I think he hates the way it happened, no one wants to go through anything even remotely similar to what he is going through right now. The emotional pain of having argued with someone important to you, the mental pain of knowing you fucked up in so many situations that you can’t figure your way out of. But this is something he’s wanted for at least the last 2 years. But by his own admission, he doesn’t feel better and I don’t think that’s going to chance any time soon.
It’s been talked about by everyone that Tai’s conflict resolution style is to clam up, to go silence and refuse to communicate. This is why this moment and the ensuing arguement with Patts is so painful. I agree with @bengiyo when he said that Tai is someone who reads too much romance. He has a skewed view of the way relationships are supposed to work. I also think though, that as time as gone on Tai has become more aware of that. He is still naive and fucks up so badly it’s completely understand why Patts reacts the way he does, but I don’t think he’s unaware of his fault. However he lacks the ability to convey the way he feels ( @lurkingshan and @ginnymoonbeam both have great posts here and here in which they discuss his conflict style and lack of ability to communicate) and now he has lost the best tool he had for making Patts believe that Tai finally knows that he will always choose Patts.
For all of Tai’s hang ups about the soulmate bond, I think he also recognizes that Patts doesn’t have those hang ups and that he does hold the believe that it means that they were meant to chose each other. It’s why Patts gets anxious, angry and upset when Lomfon acts the way he does. Why he is so frantic when he tries to confront Tai about it. Sure Tai might not have talked to him for 2 years, but he was still there and they still found their way to each other and that had to meant something, right?
But now it’s gone and Tai doesn’t know how to tell Patts that he does choose Patts because not only should Patts have already known that but the connection was also always there to prove it. Tai shouldn’t have to say it out loud because he shouldn’t have too. Again he thinks Patts should already know that. It’s horribly naive and shows Tai’s lack of dating experience but it’s what he believes in that moment.
The show is of course trying to point out that they don’t need it to have a successful relationship. They need hard work and good communication, but within the internal logic of the universe, I get why Tai would think this. Why should Patts doubt that Tai would choose him. They’ve already said they choose each other and they have (had) that connection.
But now that connection is gone. It’s gone because of Tai and he already regrets that it’s gone and that he took it away. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out later that he wants it back. A classic case of don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.
Hopefully before that happens (if it does), Patts and Tai will finally communicate with each other and get on the same page and learn how to work around their conflicts in way that both are able to do. Tai needs to grow up a bit more and learn that life’s not a romance novel (even though we might want it to be sometimes) and that it’s hard but worth it to try and make the best of it.

This is something that I (and the rest of the audience at large) have been wondering for a while. Exactly what is La Pluie trying to say about soul mates. My take away from the show so far is that, soul mates, at least romantically, are not born, they’re made. The soul mate connect experienced in the show is often believed by society to mean an instant and everlasting romantic relationship, but isn’t always necessarily the case. Tai and Tein’s parents are a really good example of this. They tried a romantic relationship, for a really long time, had beautiful sons together but in the end, their marriage and romantic relationship did not work and they split up. In contrast to them, Patts and Tai’s relationship IS romantic and has the potential to be something that lasts for the rest of their lives, if they can work through their issues together, if they communicate and remain open and honest with each other.
I can’t remember exactly who said it, but I do recall someone mentioning in a post that Tai and Patts’s relationship does not work because of their soul mate connect, but in spite of it. They each have their own issues (one of the biggest ones being Tai’s hangs ups about the connection because of his parent’s split).
Each side is presented. Tein and Bow seemingly both in the camp of believing soul mates are meant to be romantic, with Patts also falling somewhere into this category (although where exactly is a little more murky) and Lomfon being the opposite. He doesn’t believe in the soul mate connection is romantic. Lastly, Tai being somewhere in the middle of the two beliefs.
The latest episode had me wondering though, if the rest of the world falling more or less in the middle. That thought came with the idea that “soul mates as meant to be romances” could very well be a largely recent ideal. Likely something that came up in the second half of the 20th century (mostly likely along side and perhaps influencing the idea that engagement rings need to be a thing™️ a man gave a woman when they got engaged and that it had to be a diamond. Or when weddings became to grow into the large commercial industry it is today).
Building on that, there has to be people for whom the hearing loss connection is inherently platonic with no way of it becoming anything else. Other than the fact that many people believe the soul mates are meant to be a romantic connection, very little else has been explained about how and why people are connected. What happens if the two people who are connect have no way of being in a romantic relationship with each other. A good example is what happens if the two connected are opposite genders, but are only attracted to those of the same gender as they are, ie a lesbian and a gay man are connected. Or when both parties are attracted to the same gender, ie a lesbian and a straight man, or a gay man and a straight women. And even this is a very simplified version of the ways in which a soul mate connection would have to be platonic.
I’ve seen some people say that they think Tai’s father is gay and if so, it does help to explain why his parents connection could not work as a romantic relationship. They got married years ago, in a social conservative country. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that Tai’s father repressed that side of himself or didn’t realize it until later in life. But what happens to those in todays world, for whom it’s entirely possible that they have figured out their sexuality or gender prior to hearing their soul mate for the first time, or them meeting in person.
I have so many questions and no way of answering any of them. Half of them don’t even make sense or have probably been answered by piece of the show I’m forgotten but god damn do I have questions that I’m probably never going to get answers too.

With all due respect Lomfon, you fucking know already. You already know you like Tien way more than you like Tai. You already know you feel more at ease with Tien than you do with Tai. You already know all of this.
I get his motives though. All this shit it happening to him so quickly he doesn’t know which way is up any more and his denial in soulmates is so strongly rooted that he freaked out when he suddenly could hear Tai and Patts through the rain connection. I get where he could go wrong and convince himself that he actually still likes Tai and not Tien because of the sudden connection. Having denied it for so long and suddenly it happens to you. Added to that that the destiny keychain is actually Tai and maybe it was suppposed to be Tai the whole time.
His denial got him into this mess, but it’s not going to get him out of it.
I do find it very interesting though. How he lies by omission by never mentioning that he can hear Patts too, even though we know he can. It’s likely down to the fact that he doesn’t see Patts as a romantic interest at all, but I do find interesting. And while Tien was likely too harsh and worded it wrong, I think he was right. Lomfon did do this at least partially because he knew it would cause problems with Patts and Tai. He knew it could cause them to break up. I’m not saying he’s being malicious about it. Clearly he isn’t trying to be and didn’t want that happened to happen, but Lomfon is too intelligent and too rational to not have considered the consequences of doing this the way he did. If all he wanted was to understand, then he could have just told both Patts and Tai and the three of them could have work together to figure it out, but he didn’t. Instead he did this. He knew what could happen and he didn’t care.
He didn’t take Tien’s feelings into account because he’s so deep into his denial and fear that he knew he was going to hurt the boy he liked, but he did it anyway.
I don’t think Lomfon is a bad character. In fact the opposite is true. His motive is fear and this causes him to act this way. What exactly he’s afraid of I couldn’t tell you. Being alone? The idea that if he gives up on Tai then it’s all over. That Tien would reject him if he knew that Lomfon used to like his brother?
It’s what makes Patts and Lomfon very similar. Both are motivated by fear. Patts still believes that Tai won’t choose him if it came to that and in a way he was proven right. Did he exacerbate the matter by acting the way he did? Absolutely. Lomfon is motived by a fear of the unknown I think. He says he has something to prove and it all still comes back to the soulmate connection.
It’s fun to see the very rational character snap and start doing irrational things because they simply can’t deal with it anymore.
Add in the destiny keychain and everything explodes.
I can’t think rationally…or really at all after this episode. It was so good! And so sad and I already can’t wait for next Saturday.

So I really adorabled this last episode. Patts and Tai finally cleared the air, Lomfon and Tien finally confessed to each other. That last moment with Tien was hilarious in an odd way. I love the idea of a second season focusing on Tien and Lomfon and Tien’s potentional soul mate. Either give me a TienxLomfonxNewsoulmate throuple and give me platonic soulmate besties I’m begging you.
The fact that Tien has never experienced the hearing loss before makes me wonder if Tai rejecting his soulmate connection has anything to do with this. Especially since Tien was there and at the moment, the only one not effected by the hearing loss but that’s just a wild theory of mine that it more than likely, wildly wrong haha.
I’m really happy that Tai was finally able to say what he needed to say and truly let Patts know how he felt and how much he loved him. He laid out the message of the show really well. Love is a choice and it’s hard work. It’s won’t just work because of destiny or soulmates, it will work because they put in the effort to make it work.
Pee proves once again just how amazing of an actor he is, despite being in about 5 minutes of the episode total. His scenes are definitely my favourite and I definitely want to see him and Title work together again (either on the second season or another show, I’m not picky haha).
Overall, 9/10. I had a few issues with it, but I really liked it. I also really liked the experience with the fandom every week. You guys made an already brilliant show, even more enjoyable to watch.

It’s probably nothing but I gotta say, that’s an interesting song choice for the first time a couple has sex
