It's Valentine's Day and Giles has been bit by an unidentified demon. The venom's having unusual side effects.
“Valentine’s Day - oh lord, I’ve mucked everything up haven’t I? I had plans, exquisite, carefully detailed plans to spoil you. I was going to cook - not have you, ah, shag the sense back into me.” “Rupert, can I tell you a secret?” Jenny kisses the spot directly beside his ear, feels him melt to putty in her hands. In too weak a state to keep sparring with her, the strength of his self-flagellation no match for lust magic. He’s beyond adorable for thinking it would be. “I was planning to seduce you anyway.”
everyone come into this little corner with me - where calendiles had a silly demon issue on valentine's day, and nothing tragic happened at all (includes, scoobies being mortified, damsel in distress giles, and love/lust magic because that's my thing lately i guess). happy valentine's!

i do think it’s gonna murder me a tiny bit when i inevitably start posting the sequel to what you make and the response is minimal (on the grounds that it’s a sequel to a work three novels long and possibly much closer to original fiction than even what you make) but such is the life when u r writing calendiles fic. unfortunately

5 times Rupert Giles bumped into Ms. Calendar during the summer of ‘97
Written for @mouselafay for @calendiles-secret-santa 2021. Enjoy, my lovely!
Fluff, pining, and Giles being his usual stuttery self around Jenny.
The magic store
Buffy leaving town two days after averting the apocalypse wasn’t ideal, Rupert couldn’t help but think as he browsed the magic store for his necessary supplies.  While he understood her need to get away for a while, as well as her desire to spend some time with her father, they still had the Master’s bones to deal with, and he had quite hoped Buffy would want to help him deal with the vampire’s remains.
It wasn’t that he particularly needed her help- after all, Willow and Xander had both eagerly volunteered their time-, it was more a case of wanting somebody who truly understood the gravity of the situation to help him with the ritual. While the other two teenagers understood a certain amount, the Watcher couldn’t shake the idea that part of their interest in helping was that it was exciting to them. And while the ritual could be explained many ways, ‘exciting’ wasn’t high on the list.
Now, had Angel not vanished shortly after Buffy had departed town with her father, Rupert may have called on him to help. But he had no way of contacting the mysterious vampire, who seemed to come and go of his own volition with no real pattern to decipher. That left Rupert in the rather difficult situation of having only two sixteen year olds to help him with a very serious ritual. He was not a particularly religious man by any stretch of the imagination, but even he had sent up a prayer that he was not left to deal with the Master’s remains with only Willow and Xander for company.
And, perhaps, that was why he ended up bumping into Ms. Calendar, quite literally, at the magic store on Maple Court.
“Oh!”
Rupert had been halfway through gathering up his dropped incense sticks when his brain processed exactly who he had bumped into. Ms. Calendar, dressed in a rather lovely summer-y outfit, had knelt to help him gather the dropped merchandise, and shot him an amused look at the items she had picked up for him.
“Fun evening planned?” she asked, arching an eyebrow at him.
Rupert blinked for a moment at that. “Fun evening?” he echoed, brow furrowing. “Oh. Oh, no. No, not- not fun.” He cleared his throat awkwardly and straightened up. She did the same. “It’s, ah, for a ritual.” He glanced around, and then leaned a little closer so he wouldn’t be overheard. “For the Master’s remains.”
The faintly amused look on the technopagan’s face faded at that. “Oh. I- I hadn’t realised you- I mean, of course they need to be dealt with, but...” She squinted at him then, confused. “Didn’t Buffy leave for Los Angeles yesterday? I heard her and Willow talking at the school dance about it.”
“She did. I- I needed time to find the correct method of, ah, disposing of the remains, and it took longer than anticipated.”
“So Buffy won’t be helping you with this?”
“No.”
Ms. Calendar nodded slowly at that. “So who is?”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Who’s helping you? You’re not doing the whole thing by yourself, are you? Because if you are, I don’t think you need that much incense.”
“W-Well, Willow and Xander will be helping, of course-”
Ms. Calendar nodded again. “Anybody else?”
He shook his head.
She squinted at him again. “When are you planning on doing it?”
“Tomorrow. It- It’s a full moon, and it should be a pretty clear night.”
Ms Calendar pursed her lips, thought for a moment. “Where should I meet you? Your place?”
Rupert blinked. “Meet me?”
“You can’t do this with just Willow and Xander to help. At the very least another adult and an even number of people would be a good thing.” She eyed him. “I can just meet you at the cemetery, if you want.”
“M-My place would be fine.”
Ms. Calendar smiled. “Great. Shall we say nine o’clock?”
The grocery store
Ms. Calendar’s presence at the ritual had been a pleasant and welcome one, and Rupert had found himself stealing glances at her whenever possible. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about how they had first met, how they had hated each other and had barely been able to be around one another for more than a few moments without descending into an argument. Then, several months down the line, she had been helping Rupert load robes and incense and a shovel into the trunk of his car to deal with a master vampire’s remains.
In the week since they had disposed of the Master’s bones, Rupert had found himself thinking frequently about that night. She had kept the children in check, allowing him to focus more wholly on the ritual, and afterwards she had returned with him to his apartment for a cup of tea. The night had been... Pleasant, he supposed, if that were the right word for disposing of vampire remains with two teenagers.
But then she had left for the night, with a warm smile but no indication of when they would see each other again, and it had left Rupert feeling surprisingly bereft. He’d spent much of the following days lost in his thoughts, trying to process the feelings swirling around inside of him.
He hadn’t felt those feelings in quite a while, at least not as strongly as he did now. It made him feel like a hapless teenager again, all foolish longing and endless possibilities. The glimmer of youthful romance, where everything felt new and exciting.
But it was also daunting, as the realisation had settled over him slowly. Yes, Rupert hadn’t felt this feeling in quite a while, but it was certainly familiar to him. He knew, without a doubt, that he was falling for the insufferable computer science teacher who occupied his dreams. In fact, he knew that he had already fallen for her.
So when he bumped into her at the grocery store, he could only stare at her.
“Rupert,” she greeted with a smile, that faded a little as he gawped. “Uh, everything alright?”
He blinked owlishly, before he realised she’d asked him a question. “Y-Yes! Yes, everything is... Is quite fine. And you?”
Ms. Calendar studied him for a moment, before a small smile spread across her lips. “I’m good.”
A smile blossomed across his face. “That’s, that’s wonderful. That you’re, you’re good, of course.”
He could have kicked himself. Wasn’t this sort of thing supposed to get easier with age? Instead, he was stood in the middle of the grocery store making a fool of himself. He hadn’t been a teenager for a long time, and the less said about that portion of his life the better, and yet he was handling the situation no better than Buffy, Willow, or Xander would.
Ms. Calendar seemed to take pity on him then, and he didn’t know whether to feel relieved of affronted by that. As she talked about what she had been up to and led him around the store, he simply followed and listened, occasionally remembering to grab items off the shelf and drop them into his basket.
“- I could print you out a copy, if you’d like. I know how you feel about computers,” she rolled her eyes, “but a paper copy should be alright.”
He stared at her. She stared back, before arching an eyebrow as she fixed him with a look somewhere between amusement and annoyance.
“Were you listening to a word I said?”
“Ah, well...” Rupert’s face flushed in embarrassment.
Thankfully, that seemed to amuse her. “I was talking about some texts I found online. Nothing huge, just snippets here and there about other Hellmouths and what happened to them. Did you want me to get you some copies?”
“Oh.” He blinked. “Yes. That, that would be quite helpful. Of course, I have access to the diaries of former Watchers, but it is always helpful to have as many accounts as possible. The diaries can sometimes be a bit... Vague.”
“Really?” she asked, a little surprised. “You’re telling me all those stuffy Watchers didn’t love to wax lyrical about the achievements of their Slayers?”
Rupert shrugged. “Not always. Sometimes details are missing, particularly when... When they deal with difficult topics. I know my own account of the fight against the Master isn’t as... Thorough as it could be.”
She shot him a confused look at that. “Why? What did you omit?”
“Nothing important.” He shifted uncomfortably. He wasn’t entirely sure why he was admitting this to Ms. Calendar, particularly given that they were in the middle of the grocery store. “Though Buffy knocking us out is hardly the sort of thing the Council need to know. Nor do they need to know that she found out about the prophecy the evening before.”
Perhaps it was the tone of his voice, perhaps it was the tightness in his jaw, but she dropped the subject then, and Rupert was relieved.
“Well,” she said, clearing her throat uncomfortably, “I’ll get those texts printed out for you.”
“Thank you.”
The Espresso Pump
By the time Rupert was bumping into Ms. Calendar at the Espresso Pump in July, he was starting to question if there was something supernatural going on. Granted, Sunnydale wasn’t the largest of places to live, and there were very few places to go, meaning that running into people you knew was inevitable. But still, he certainly hadn’t run into any other faculty members as many times as he had run into the computer science teacher.
Despite his protests, she paid for his drink, and then steered him towards a table in the corner of the shop. The sunlight filtered through the window, catching her hair in just the right way to make Rupert want to lean across the table and brush his fingers through it. But that, of course, would be wholly inappropriate.
“Have you seen Willow and Xander much?” she asked as she sipped at her coffee.
“Only in passing,” he said with a shrug. “It’s summer vacation. They have much more exciting things to do than check in with me.”
Ms. Calendar studied him for a long moment. “You know, Buffy’s in Los Angeles. Willow and Xander are off having fun. School’s out, and you haven’t mentioned any vampire or demon activity. Why don’t you have a break?”
He had been taking a sip of tea when she said that, and he nearly choked on it as he started to laugh. “This isn’t exactly a job that comes with vacation time.”
She eyed him. “Nobody told Buffy that.”
“That’s different. She’s, she’s been through a lot. She deserves some time off, and to see her father.”
“What, and you don’t deserve time off?”
Rupert had no answer to that. It hadn’t even crossed his mind to leave town for the summer. He certainly had no plans to return to England any time soon, and he wasn’t exactly desperate to explore America. He had simply assumed that his summer would be spent researching and reading and taking time to himself before things became busy again come Fall.
“And what, pray tell, do you suggest I do?” he asked eventually.
Ms. Calendar shrugged, wholly unhelpful. “Get out of town for a bit. Even just for a weekend. Go for a drive, see the sights.”
He fixed her with a sceptical look. “I’m not sure there’s anything I particularly want to see, truth be told. And, and I have a lot of reading to catch up on-”
“Rupert, your books aren’t going anywhere.”
“Neither are the sights.”
That earned him a small smile from the woman, before she let out a sigh. “I just... Buffy isn’t the only one who’s been through a lot. Don’t forget that.” She finished her coffee and stood. “I’ll see you later.”
The Bronze (yes, really)
‘Later’ turned out to be the end of July. Rupert hadn’t planned on spending his nights circling the Bronze on the lookout for opportunistic vampires, but when Willow and Xander told him there had been one or two scuffles, he’d inwardly sighed and snatched up a stake. He supposed he should be grateful the summer had been as quiet as it had, what with Buffy being out of town, but still he couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed that he had to spend his night preventing teenagers from being snacked on.
What he hadn’t factored in was that he hadn’t been the only one to occasionally bump into Ms. Calendar around town, and that he hadn’t been the only one Willow and Xander had shared their concerns with.
“What are you doing here?”
It certainly hadn’t been the smoothest of greetings, and Ms. Calendar had every right to look annoyed with him.
“Willow and Xander told me there’d been a couple of attacks,” she said, before eyeing the stake in his hand. “I see they told you the same.”
He looked around then, scanning the area before returning his attention to her. “Y-Yes. They did. I didn’t realise they’d spoken to you too.”
Ms. Calendar shrugged. “I saw them this afternoon, outside the video store,” she explained. Then, she eyed him. “Did you get away at all?”
There was a tinge to her tone of voice, something that made Rupert feel a little guilty, and he avoided her eyes.
“No,” he admitted. “I- I’ve been busy.”
“Rupert.” Her tone was disapproving then, and he couldn’t help but feel a little touched that she was that concerned about how he spent his leisure time. While he’d rather not have to justify his choice of hobbies, he had to admit it was nice that somebody cared enough to disapprove of them.
“Do you have any stakes on you?” he asked instead, already fishing in his pocket for one of his spares. “I, I’d rather hate for you to get hurt.”
At that, Ms. Calendar looked marginally surprised, before a soft, almost embarrassed smile tugged at her lips. “I came prepared,” she said, and pulled a stake and a bottle of holy water from her purse. “Thanks, though.”
He nodded, and the pair of them set off on a walk, skirting around the nightclub and keeping their eyes and ears peeled for sounds of teenagers in distress.
“What, exactly, have you been up to, then?” Rupert asked after a silence of several long seconds. “You, you keep telling me that I should do something with my summer, but it occurs to me that you haven’t once shared your own plans.”
She shrugged. “I’ve been away for a few nights here and there. Went to Los Angeles, went to Oakland. You know, they have a really great bookstore in Oakland. Lots of old books. You’d love it.”
Rupert paused for a moment at that, looking to her. “You, you’ll have to give me the address.”
“Sure. Although, it’s not the easiest place to find. It would probably be easier to show you where it is.”
“On a map?”
Ms. Calendar shrugged again, nonchalant. “Sure. Or we could drive up there.”
He could only surmise that she had no idea what she did to him. Because her tone of voice and her demeanour was far too casual to point to anything else. Yet Rupert felt his heart stop in his chest. A trip, with her, to Oakland to visit a bookstore. It took him a few moments to get a response out.
“T-That would be lovely.” A stupid grin had spread across his face, one he couldn’t tame no matter how hard he tried.
But if she thought the grin looked stupid, she said nothing and only responded with her own smile that made Rupert’s heart constrict with longing. Even in the harsh glow of the streetlights she looked gorgeous. All he had to do was reach out, run his fingers through her hair-
A scream tore through the air, and all thoughts of romance with Ms. Calendar fled from Rupert’s head. With a sigh, he set off towards the sound.
 The Cemetery
“Of all the cemeteries in all of Sunnydale, you walk into this one?”
Rupert smiled at Ms. Calendar’s words, but merely shrugged at her. “I think you’ll find I was the one who was here first,” he pointed out. “What are you doing here?”
Ms. Calendar shrugged. “Shortcut,” she said, causing him to frown. “Oh, don’t give me that look. I came prepared.” She held up a bottle of holy water as evidence of her preparation.
But Rupert couldn’t help the feelings of worry and fear that lingered around him at her words. “Be that as it may, I hardly think a shortcut through a cemetery is a good idea.” Then, realising that she might construe his words as him scolding her, he hurriedly backtracked. “Not, not that I don’t think you’re capable of taking care of yourself, but I’d- I’d hate for anything to happen to you.”
Ms. Calendar had been looking mildly annoyed at him, but her expression softened with his clarification. “Well,” she said then, a little awkwardly, “I could say the same about you.”
His eyes went wide. “Y-You could?”
She nodded. “What happens if you get ambushed? You’re out here alone.” She looked around pointedly, before folding her arms across her chest. “Maybe I should stay and help you.”
Rupert laughed a little uneasily then. Ms. Calendar, offering to help him with patrol? It wasn’t that she wasn’t capable- he was sure she was-, but he couldn’t help but feel anxious. What if he made a fool of himself in front of her? He had been trained to fight vampires for years; he knew really that it shouldn’t be a problem. But he was also someone who could barely string a sentence together when he was around her, someone who was reduced to embarrassing, almost teenage qualities just because she’d happened to smile at him a certain way. It was one thing for that to happen in the grocery store, or the Espresso Pump, it was wholly different for it to happen on patrol.
“Alright.”
The word escaped unbidden from his mouth. He hadn’t intended to ask her to stay, yet it seemed as though he just had. He swallowed thickly, glancing at her before focusing his attention on the grave he’d been surveying. Ms. Calendar hopped up to sit on top of a tombstone, and watched him for a long few moments.
“When is Buffy back from L.A?”
“Just before the start of term,” Rupert said then, grateful that she was sticking with seemingly safe conversation topics. “I, I haven’t had much contact with her of course, but Willow and Xander have.”
Ms. Calendar eyed him then, apparently trying to decide how best to respond to that. “So how are you spending the rest of the summer? If Buffy’s not back until just before the start of term, you’ve still got a few weeks to yourself.”
“I think I’ve rather had enough of time to myself,” he said then, without thinking. Then, he cleared his throat. “I mean to say, I, I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve had, but... Well, even I’m finding all this peace and quiet a little much now.” He gave a slightly nervous chuckle. “Is it strange to say that I miss Buffy and the others coming to me with inane questions?”
That made Ms. Calendar smile. “Missing them, are you?”
“Perhaps. A little.” He looked to the undisturbed grave, and then sighed and checked his watch. “I don’t think anything’s going to be rising tonight. Shall I walk you home?”
She eyed him for a moment, before nodding and hopping off the tombstone. “Aren’t you the gentleman, England?”
Rupert flushed a little at that, a proud little smile tugging at his lips. “W-Well, with a lady as lovely as yourself...”
They made their way out of the cemetery and down the street towards Ms. Calendar’s apartment, Rupert’s eyes never leaving the woman beside him. However long the walk took, he knew, it would feel too short. He should ask her out, perhaps, for coffee, or a meal. But was that too presumptuous? Did they even have enough in common, beside the supernatural? In many ways, this whole thing felt so much easier when he was younger, when he hadn’t worried quite so much about asking a woman out. He didn’t know when it had become so awkward for him, but part of him was quite frustrated with himself.
“I- I don’t suppose you have anything going on, do you?”
Ms. Calendar blinked at him. “When?”
He swallowed, and shrugged. “Any time. Before school starts back up.”
“Well, unlike you, I’m getting away from Sunnydale for a bit, and I won’t be back until the end of the month.” She frowned at him then, and he could only presume his disappointment showed on his face. “Why?”
“No, no reason.” He forced a smile. “I simply thought, with the children occupied, and summer nearly over, perhaps we should do something.”
She gave him an apologetic smile at that. “Sorry. If you’d mentioned something earlier-”
“Don’t apologise. It’s, it’s my fault. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll find something to occupy my time.”
They came to a stop outside an apartment building then, and Ms. Calendar looked up at it. “This is me,” she said, before fishing for her house keys in her pocket. She eyed him then, giving him a small smile.  “I’ll see you when term starts again, yeah?”
Rupert smiled softly. “I look forward to it.”

very much incredibly tempted to write calendiles where everything is exactly the same but jenny is from the north of england. not sure why, projection, perhaps, but yes. a need i think.
i dont even think it would be funny, i think it'd just be way way way too stupid and i love the concept too much.

He’s never built a bed before. The loft apartment had come furnished with necessities, fridge, sofa, oven, bed, desk. Everything a newly relocated Watcher should require. (Post Passion, Giles puts together a bed, it's ostensibly difficult)
I've been stuck on the idea of Giles apartment as a center of trauma but also love and that's how this happened. The idea of the space absorbing energies was a fun gothic concept I needed to play with.

Hi hello here's that shitty fic I mentioned like 20 minutes ago. My brain really said ✨bestie no✨ and left, so it's incredibly short. Anyways it's our favourite technopagan and her librarian. Enjoy and goodnight. (Or good morning)
