Working Women Priorities: Is Mental Well Being a Chore or Self-Care?
Physical health threat and isolation with restrictions hampering mental health; COVID-19 is like a double-edged sword. Statistics from various sources have indicated that women are facing major burnouts and increased stress that negatively impact mental wellbeing. There is a juggle to balance household chores and professional life with the continuous blurring of balance. 
More than 41% of the working population cited issues with the delineation between personal and work life. Women are struggling furthermore as work from home is becoming the norm and there are no schedules or routines, leading to additional chores and responsibilities.
“I am meant to cater to everyone’s needs and also complete my work deadlines” – a traditional Indian woman.
This is the dialogue that plays in the head and defines the life of women in India. They are the prime carers and are mostly overloaded with work and societal pressure. They need to take care of the family’s physical needs, nutrition, and daily chores with the added need to now maintain a professional environment for everyone working at home. While other realities and needs become her schedule, her well-being is usually on the back burner or completely ignored. 
“If I take time out for myself, it's selfish. It will disrupt everything, and everyone will be unhappy” – a dutiful working mother.
This is what surrounds a working woman who is trying to not only balance work and chores but also support her child through their growth. Women believe that they need to be tending to the needs of their children always, and a little “me time” is a betrayal from her responsibilities of womanhood. 
“I am exhausted, I don’t know if I will make it. I should rather take a break or quit my job”- a burnt-out women employee.
This could become or has become the theme of working women’s life since the pandemic and its shifts. However, being aware, changing how we think, and working out our schedules can help us balance and prioritize our mental well-being.
 Knowing how to do and what to do for oneself can help cope better:
Firstly, believe and know that your mental wellbeing is a priority! It is essential and it will help prevent any unwarranted health issues, burnouts and aid in increasing or sustaining your productivity. 
It is vital to believe and let go of the need to be perfect and have everything be perfect. We as women can rethink, be flexible and let certain things pass when it comes to household chores. For example, it’s okay when others are helping and aren’t doing it the way you do it. Accept the help and learn to not overburden yourself with doing it all by yourself. These little steps add to your future well being. This will help you against avoidable exhaustion. 
Be assertive about segregation and delegation of certain duties among family members. This will help release the unwanted pressure of unsurmountable chores and disputes due to duties. For example, your kids or younger family members can set up the table or clear dishes, the older adults can contribute with cleaning the house or help with cooking.
Set time aside for yourself and make it a routine. Having a certain amount of time and break can help you recharge and refresh. Meditate, talk to your friends or scroll through your social media or watch your favourite show/movie. 
Do something you enjoy/relish and de-stress through dancing or taking a nap or any other activity. This will help regulate your mood and give you a break from the daily schedule. Meditation and yoga have proven to help with de-stressing and promote better mental health. Research indicates that Yoga provides an overall holistic health improvement. It suspends the fluctuations of the mind and by acting consciously, we live better and suffer less.
Build a schedule and routine so you are mentally prepared and can be reminded of your self-care time/activities. Schedules can help to keep the essentials of the day well-planned; everyone is aware of what is scheduled for the day and hence least confusion or last-minute issues. Fixed schedules and duties can help deal with the chores with ease. 
Try and set up a professional area and environment in a certain part of the house. Dress up as you would for work and try to create boundaries with others regarding the work hours and meeting schedules. All of these add to maintaining the work-life balance.
Finally, take time to meet your friends and socialize when you are allowed or try virtual parties. 
In the end, we are the creators of our fate and managers of our health. Hence, women should be encouraged not only by other women but also by their families to promote their mental health and indulge in self-care without guilt or shame. You can avail services like chat support where one can simply vent out or even offer a mental health assessment that helps understand one's needs which redirects to the correct steps towards one’s self-care and mental wellbeing. Finally, being aware that when things go out of control, professional help can always help bring you back on your feet is an important memo! It needs to be added to all women’s to-do lists!

Surprise Me, Surprise You (Happy Shinichi Day! 05.04.20) (ShinRan. Drabble. College. Roommates.)

He is out late again.
Going back to their apartment a little past midnight has slowly turned into a routine. School work, on top of detective work, is such a pain. The only thing he’s grateful for is the fact that he likes his major, Criminology, so damn much. Had it been otherwise, the reason for going home late for the past few days will be because of a real case of homicide, not because of a simulated midterm project geared to identify fingerprints, blood splatters, and wounds for his Forensics class.
Not that he wants more homicides to happen. Well. Real, unsolved cases make him feel alive. Not school requirements.
He shuffles for his keys and opens the front door quietly, careful not to make any unnecessary sound that might disrupt the sleep of his roommate.
Roommate slash childhood friend slash most favorite person in the world —
— Platonically. Or so he forces himself to believe.
The light in the living room is still open, much to his confusion. He walks to the light switch, only to stop short upon seeing a figure sleeping soundly by the dining table.
Ah. There she goes again.
He shrugs and approaches the woman. She looks so peaceful sleeping like a log that for a moment he debates on whether or not to wake her up or just drape her with a blanket. But whatever decision he thinks of becomes moot upon hearing a tired sigh, followed by a long, disconcerted yawn.
He almost snorts at how ridiculous she looks as she stretches her limbs while wearing that striped party hat on her head.
“Nn...Shinichi?”
“Mhm,” he pulls up a seat, eyes half lidded, his elbows on the table as one palm couches his cheek. “You fell asleep here. Again. How tired are you on a daily basis?”
She rubs her eyes, attempting to ride them off of sleepiness.
“What time is it?”
“12:25 AM.”
“Twel... EH?!”
Like a panic-stricken child, Ran stands upright, droopiness gone in an instant. She glances at her phone and her face whitens. After hurriedly sending a mail, she pulls out a match from her back pocket and lights a small candle sticking out from the center of a finely baked pie, which has surprisingly gone unnoticed in front of him.
Shinichi watches in quiet amazement as Ran lifts the pastry and brings it near his face.
“Ha-... Happy birthday, Shinichi!”
Shinichi blinks owlishly.
It’s my birthday?
“It’s your birthday, you moron!” Ran answers, like she has just read his mind.
“Oh.” He looks at the pie in front of him, then at her. “It is...Oh. Okay.”
She rolls her eyes and releases a groan. “Geez. I knew it, you forgot your birthday again!” She slides back to her chair in defeat. “You never really care for occasions like this, do you?”
He smiles apologetically.
“Well, worry not,” she places the pie on the table, “because that’s what I’m here for. To remind you!”
For a detective geek’s best friend, this girl’s pretty painstakingly persistent. He has known this since they were young, remembering the many times she’d coax him into eating, drinking, and sleeping, everytime his detective brain got the best of him. Some people would give up easily, but not her. Although her ramblings were never guaranteed to work on him all the time, she remained relentless in reminding him to do human things because he’s, you know, human, and if she won’t, no one else will.
Somehow, this trait of hers has grown on him and admittedly, he finds it kinda nice. She’s like his own personal alarm clock. When he finds himself too engrossed in unworldly interests, or lost in track for whatever reason, her smiling face will randomly pop up in his head to tell him to breathe. Rest. Take it easy. Then he’ll do it and be okay again.
That’s one of the many reasons why he considers her his most favorite person in the world.
In a platonic sense.

“Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break and celebrate moments like this, you know?” She remarks, bringing her face to her palm. “Especially with people you love.”
She smiles at him appreciatively, and his heart flutters at that.
With people you love. Yeah.
“Now, make a wish and blow the candle!” And so he does. Ran claps her hand once the fire is extinguished, and readies to slice the pie with a knife she prepared beforehand.
Ran gives him a hefty piece and awaits his reaction on the first bite.
“So? How is it?” Her eyes glimmer in anticipation for his answer, and she gets it when he widens his eyes and licks the crumbs around his lips in interest.
“Lemon pie...” He blushes at how delicious it tastes. “My favo-”
“Your favorite! Yay, I’m really glad the taste turned out well!” She cups her cheeks in glee, marveling at her achievement. “I’ve only tried baking it once, so I’m not really confident about it.”
He forks more crumbs and eats in silence.
You should be. It’s the most delicious lemon pie I’ve ever tasted!
“I learned from Asami-senpai that you like lemon pie. You know, our former student council president? The really pretty senpai who was liked by everybody from our high school?”
I know her. No one compares to you, though.
“You might’ve forgotten about that already, Shinichi, but she baked the whole soccer club a lemon pie and you-” she snorts, “-you said it was bad! Oh my god! How dare you?”
It really was! I couldn’t lie...
“Anyway, she also told me that she confessed her feelings to you but you rejected her. Said you’ve been in love with somebody else for years…” she drifts away, shoving another bite into her mouth, chuckling passively.
“I wonder who the lucky girl is?”
...Can’t lie.
“It’s you.”
Her giggle dies down, mouth stops munching, smile instantly disappearing from her lips. Eyes widen like saucers, her face contorting to an unfathomable expression he can best associate to pure bewilderment.
“Wh...what?”
“I said it’s you,” he looks away.
He doesn’t mean to say that out loud —
“...always been you.”
— and repeat it thrice.
But oh boy, there he goes.
How does she look right now? Surprised? Confused? Betrayed? He cannot confirm. He’s afraid to look again. He doesn’t think he can.
(I love you.)
But alas, his senses betray him as his eyes instinctively flit back up, locking with hers, searching in desperation for whatever answer her beautiful eyes store.
Though words fail him (and her) at the moment, he wants to know.
He hopes ‘I love you back’ is a set of crystal eyes edging with tears that if she blinks, they’ll fall. He hopes ‘I love you back’ is a sharp, quivering inhale, unable to release an exhale, because she needs to fill her lungs with air or else she’ll pass out. He hopes ‘I love you back’ is that nervous bite on her lower lip, stopping the waterfall of words about to gush out.
(Do you love me too?)
He moves his face closer, closer to her... maybe he’ll get a clearer answer if he sees her eye to eye, nose to nose, breath to breath—
Knock! Knock! Knock!
As quick as lightning, Ran stands up from her seat, face as red as her ridiculous striped party hat.
“G-gee, I wonder wh-who’s at the door?! Haha! C-Can you open it, Shinichi?”
She stutters and he cannot help but laugh at her awkwardness. He coughs and walks his way to the door. Weirdo as always.
...
You just confessed to her on your birthday. Now who’s the more awkward one?
“SURPRISE!!”
He jolts at the sudden outburst of energy radiating from the other side. Startled to the bones, his eyes jump from one person to the other.
Kazuha-san. Hattori. Tou-san. Kaa-san. Sonoko. Kyougoku-san.
A mix of voices all echoing the same birthday greeting fills his ears, as he stands there confused as to who he shall prioritize first -- Yukiko hugging him, Heiji patting his head like he’s some disciple, Sonoko taking a picture of the sweet parent-child moment, Makoto holding a Shinichi banner with Shinichi’s big sleeping face plastered on it, Kazuha laughing at the background, or Ran admiring everything from inside their apartment.
“We hope we didn’t disturb a sacred moment,” Yusaku butts in, eyes shifting between Ran and Shinichi.
“We mailed Ran-chan and told her we’ll drop by and surprise you, Shin-chaaan!” Yukiko hugs him more tightly, earning her a wince from the birthday boy.
Entering the apartment freely, the four younger adults hang the banner a little above the pie Ran baked. Heiji and Kazuha unbox a chocolate cake they probably bought on their way to them, while Sonoko assists Makoto uncork a bottle of champagne and prepare eight glasses of wine on the table.
“To Kudo!” Hattori exclaims, as he lights the other cake on the table.
“To Kudo!” everyone shouts in unison.
He looks at the people, admiring everyone who went out of their way to pull this stupid surprise.
“This is what I actually meant when I said celebrating your birthday with people you love,” she whispers beside him, shyly.
He grins stupidly at himself, then looks at her. “And I am now, right?”
In more ways than one.
Cheeks turning crimson, she averts his gaze and looks at the wave of people now crowding over her lemon pie.
“Yes, yes you are.”
The pair looks at Yusaku and Yukiko setting their presents beside the pie; Makoto taking Sonoko’s photos as she pauses in front of their birthday surprise set up. Heiji and Kazuha bicker as to who gets the bigger slice of the pastry.
Amidst the noise, Ran finds herself staring at a full body mirror across the unit, reflecting her and him, side by side, the others blurred in the background.
“And these people you love... they love you back,” she refocuses her gaze on him. “Surely.”
She smiles so wide that it hides her eyes.
“Happy birthday, Shinichi.”
(I love you.)
“Yeah,” he smiles back. “Happy birthday to me.”

(I love you, too.)

whaaat? ali again? yes... it’s me.. while byul was dying (rip), i’ve been working on reviving one of my old muses, jung jieun. she’s 22 years old and a sophomore in hwaseong! also on the quidditch team, captain of the archery team and in the art club. she might not seem like your most typical hwaseong on the surface? i guess? but deep down.. she is hwaseong
i have a profile set up for her here, and a bio. i... do not have a plots page yet. there will be some ideas under the cut though and brainstorming is always cool & sexy. anyhoo, if you’d like to plot something with miss jieun, don’t hesitate to smash that like button, and i’ll hit you up here or on discord! born and raised in busan. grew up with her muggle mother and no other family. doesn’t know who her father is, he might be a wizard and he might not be. who knows! 
her mother has... very little money. so jieun didn’t have a lot growing up. but she had her mom and that was enough <3
never felt like she fit in at school, she couldn’t explain why but she felt like she was different from the other kids. was very much a loner first half of her childhood
well surprise surprise she turned out to be a witch! fit much better in at unnamed korean wizarding school, made some very good friends n all that good stuff
kind of a troublemaker while growing up.. she doesn’t look like she’d be one but she has trouble trusting anyone that’s not her mother and has a particular distaste for authority sooooo she got in trouble a bunch for talking back to teachers and disrupting class 
wanted to go straight to mokseong after she finished school but couldn’t afford it :( her mom had put away some money for it but was not enough.. so she prepared to work for a year or two to save up even more money 
TW FOR MENTIONS OF DEATH/CAR ACCIDENT/DRUNK DRIVING. a few weeks after she graduated the worst thing happened... her mother was the victim of a huge car accident where a drunk driver had lost complete control over the car. she died on the way to the hospital :( jieun felt like her life ended bc her mom was the most important person to her, but she didn’t let her mother’s death keep her down for long bc he knew her mom would’ve wanted her to keep going and do whatever she can to achieve her dreams. and so she kept working!! and eventually!! she could start attending msu!! so now she’s here!! yay!!!!

ok i’m like extremely bad at coming up with general plot ideas but... here are a few things!! the ideas might not be very good but pls love her regardless <3 
someone she helps with clothes / hair! she’s not the most open person though so she’s not willing to help out just anyone but if they’re a friend she’ll help!!

Working at the Elephant Cafe was more shitty than it can get.
You opened and closed the shop every single day, the customers were shitty especially the teenagers/ highschool students. You hated them with a passion, every time they walked in you wanted to bang your head on the wood counter so you wouldn’t have to deal with their antics.
Some of them would make a scene and destroy some of the tables and chairs forcing you to kick them out. Other items you would see these big groups of girls walk in, order something that sounded pretty off of the menu, take thousands of pictures of it and then walk out. And every time they did that you silently thought to yourself ‘What the fuck! Those pieces of shit waste so much food, and they come in EveRyDaY!’
You sigh in utter disappointment but you kept on working throughout the day.
The Elephant Cafe was in a very affluent district, fancy cars would silently roll down the street with designer stores covering each side. You realized that the people who came in had almost all the money in the world, and could give two shits about wasting the food or their money. You hated that, you despised how the kids that would walk in would have the rest of their lives planned while you worked all the hours of the day.
A day in your life went a little something like this: At 3am, you would wake up and do your morning routine and be out the door by 3:30am. At 4 o'clock in the morning you would do package deliveries until 8am where you would then change to go to the cafe and work there from 8:30 to 1 in the afternoon. By the graces of Satan you are blessed with a 30min lunch where for the majority of that time you are a part time hotline operator. Then at 5pm, you close the cafe and head to the local convenience store and work from 5:30 to 10pm and you’d still have to do your online college course.
Four jobs in total, not all of them paid well, and the only job that did pay well was working at Elephant cafe. Your home situation wasn’t the greatest, years before you had become a college student your father had died leaving you and your mother to fend for each other. Your mother was a sweet little old lady who took care of the neighborhood children and was a strong prominent woman. Knowing that your mother was growing older in age, you, in secret, gave up on going to college to make more money to take care of her and was going to stay with her mother to take care of her.
But mother knew best.
She told you “Don’t worry about me sweetheart. You need to live your life, I’m not that much an old hag. I can carry my own, be free, and live life. AND don’t forget to bring me back some grandchildren.” As much as you told her that you wanted to stay and take care of her, your bag was packed and you were shipped off to a new part of the country.
Dad didn’t leave a lot of money when he died. So when you were in the big city and on your own getting a job was your very first priority. As you job hunted, you found plenty of job openings and applied to them as soon as possible. Luckily you didn’t have to worry about housing because your friend Mirio had a spare room in his apartment and was allowed to stay as long as you cleaned up and kept yourself healthy. | this sounds a bit awkward and it would be best if you reworded it.
You felt bad for Mirio, but envied him at the same time He got a full ride to E Univeristy while you were working every hour of every day to amass enough money to survive and still try to graduate on time. Life sucked but there was no other way ( respectful way) at that to make more money than you were already making and saving.
Money had you in a mental bind, you felt bad that you were leeching off of Mirio who was working hard, but now even harder because he had an additional mouth to feed.
“Hey y/n? You seem out of it, what's wrong?’ Mirio’s cheerful voice rocked you out of your depressing thoughts and you turned your head towards him. You sigh, « I just… want to make more money y’know. I already work four jobs and I just wanna make money without having to work. » A laugh erupts from Mirio’s chest and he says « Well, the world doesn’t work that way. That’s why I’m letting you stay here for as long as you need. Don’t fret. »
You wanted to combat his words but his bright smile doesn’t allow you too. You close your computer and make way for your room, you throw yourself into your bed and look at the clock. 12:00’ the clock read « Fuck me. » You turn over and force yourself to get a wink of sleep and prepare for another slave away day.

Elephant Cafe was bustling as normal, preppy pieces of shit would walk in and cause a ruckus. The same group of girls would walk in order food, snap it, post it, then dip. You rest your head on your hand at the counter, and all of a sudden a man walked it. You lifted your head and saw a man who was wrapped in a dull scarf, with eye bags heavier than your under your eyes.
“I’d like a dark coffee with 4 shots of espresso please.” His voice was deep and velvety, it shook you to your core. “Yessir and may I get the name for your order?”
“Aizawa Shouta please.”
“Your total will be—“ A crash interrupted your sentence. Two high school kids were fighting in the dining area over who knows what. “G-give me a minute I’m sorry.” You reluctantly walk over to them and try to handle the situation.
“Who the FUCK do you think you are putting your hands on me!!”
“I barely touched you, I am just asking you to leave the premises. You are disrupting the others.”
“I DON'T CARE!!! My dad could buy you and all of those shitty workers back there!!”
‘I’m pretty sure he could.’ “Please ma’am, whatever you and your friend is arguing about could probably be solved by or infinite pockets and—“
“The fuck is that supposed to mean. Are you saying because I have money and privileges I can’t have any problem!?”
You didn’t answer. Then a splash of water is thrown on your face, and the laughter of the woman erupts in your ear. You wanted to keep your job, but something in you snapped.
“ Your right. I do think that you're privileged and rich and yes you might have problems but I bet you wouldn’t LAST a day in my life.” The girl was silent and shocked “I WORK FROM 4am to 5pm every single day. Four jobs from 4am to 5pm AND I go to college online. I don’t make enough to live on campus, or enough to live on my own. I’m sick and tired of rich pieces of shit not respecting those that work for and around you. You come in here everyday, and disrespect all of us and threaten to have us fired! YOU’RE DADDY’S GIRL AND I HOPE HE CUTS YOU OFF SO YOU'LL HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW THE WORLD REALLY WORKS. I GET SO TIRED OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE WORLD AT THEIR FEET AND NEVER WORKED A DAY IN THEIR GODDAMNED LIFE!”
The girl looked at you slack jawed. She didn’t know what to say, she looked at you in awe. “Go a head and call your daddy, cuz’ that’s all the fuck you know how to do.”
You walked back behind the counter and continued with the customer who didn’t look dazed at all. Drenched in water, out of breathe, adrenaline pumping “Your total is 5.95. Will that be cash or card?”
“Cash,” he said. He fumbled in his pocket and handed you an American Black Card. You swipe it and he tells you “Debit is fine.” You look at him with a warm smile and back down at the illuminating screen.
“I like what you did back there. She looked really surprised that there are people who actually work.” You scoff, “ Hell yeah, and I work too hard for her to always call on her dad when things don’t go her way. My dad died so does it look like I can call on him, hell no. I work four jobs and I’m still poor.” Realizing that you damn near poured your life to this man you didn’t know you look up and see a small smile.
His order is completed and you hand him his drink. “While you were working so hard her dad showed up.” You roll your eyes and groan, then an envelope and business card is handed your way. “ If you are fired just give me a call. I’ll help you, a hard worker nowadays is hard to come across. And daddy’s little girl is a prime example.” Once he walked up the girl's dad spoke with you, and you were happy that he sided with you in the matter. Which resulted in the girls father cutting her off to make her work to be just as wealthy as he was since he was self made. The look on her face was priceless and she tried to argue with him but the dad didn’t care at all. Daddy’s little girl would have to become a woman.
As Shouta walks out and you look at the envelope, it looked….pretty thick. A cold sweat ran down your face, what was he trying to do? Was it a sleep agent filled envelope! Was it DRUGS?! Not saying that you wouldn’t use them but….what kind of drugs. You take an envelope and place it in your locker in the back and for the rest of the evening, it sits on your brain.
When your shift was over you grabbed the envelope and rubbed it with your callused hands. ‘What the fuck is in here.’ And at the same time you fumbled his business card in your hands. The card read ‘ Kitty Kafe CEO. Owner Of Kitty Kafe Around the Globe. Mobile #: ***-***-***’ Your heart nearly dropped
Into your ass, ‘WTF!’ You’ve never run home so quickly.
“MIRIO!!!! I-I met thé CEO of Kitty Kafe and he gave me his business card and envelope.” He quirked an eyebrow “Wow! That’s a once in a lifetime chance how’d you look?”
“H-how’d I look? I was in my—“ It dawned on you, when you met him you were in your cafe uniform but later drenched in water. “ I was in uniform but later drenched wet.” Mirio shot you a concerned look “No like that you ass. A customer there threw water on me so… yeah.”
You and Mirio spoke about the events of the day and how you made a girl get financially cut off by her dad. That night you slept soundly but that envelope stayed in your mind.
The next day at the cafe you had the envelope at your side waiting for him to come back and to your luck he did. He had the same look on his face and he said “Well it’s nice to see that you aren’t drenched in water this time.” You chuckle, “Same thing as last time, CEO Shouta?”
“So you looked at the business card, it’s good to know that you're literate. But yes,” He hands you his card and rings up your order, “ I’d like for you to sit with me while I drink you coffee. I don’t want to force you.”
You look up at him and furrow your brows “W-why?”

So I’m fine giving you money because you earn it based off of your hard work and determination.
You were happy. You were given the golden ticket and you can finally start being more productive and given a man that doted on you for how hard you work and appreciated it. Aizawa was different, and that’s what made meeting him all the better.

Coronavirus anxieties currently go like this:
1) according to my brain, I am definitely carrying coronavirus with no symptoms and going to make everyone around me sick. This is a general anxiety I have a lot, as a fairly healthy person who has a hard time taking breaks, but also doesn't want to make people sick, and the panic and individualism and judgement around me is just making it worse.
2) change in routine causes anxiety, uncertainty causes anxiety, unclear information causes anxiety, literally everything about this causes anxiety. Work created an action plan that says we don't have to use PTO to stay home if we have symptoms, but it doesn't say if we get paid. And it says we have to work from home if we are able, and it has no information about what that looks like when my job is answering the office phone and organizing things physically in the office. Things are getting constantly cancelled and rescheduled or just...everything is wreaking havoc with my schedule. And, like, it feels whiny to be like "woe is me, my schedule is disrupted while people are sick", but this is something that affects my day to day functioning. My routine and patterns and plans are already fucked and it's only going to get worse and that means I'm not going to manage well.
3) hyperempathy sucks. It requires major major boundaries. It's impossible to have that boundary when the thing causing anxiety is the only topic of conversation these days. Half of my time at work is hunting the internet for purell. Then everyone panics at me because we don't have enough purell. Then someone gifts me face masks. Then someone tells me about the lack of wipes in the Uber they just took. Then I leave work and go to lunch and the servers are scared and people are wearing face masks and I overhear someone talking about coronavirus preparations in their workplace. The only way to avoid absorbing anxiety would be to lock myself in the room and never look at social media and talk to anyone.
4) individualism is terrifying. The fact that our world has gotten this focused on the self is terrifying. My coworker was proud of himself for not holding an elevator for someone today because "social distancing" and I am horrified. When our response to disaster is to look out for only ourselves, when we can't even extend small kindnesses to each other, how the fuck are we going to actually get through the disaster? And, again, this isn't a new thing. People have been dying because of this for a while. It just makes me so angry that it took this to get people to care about the spread of disease...and then only about the spread of disease to themselves. It's sickening and gross and I just...can't think about it. If I think too much about how scary and awful our world is under capitalism, I lose the ability to function...and, uh, yeah...it's currently difficult to avoid.
And I mostly just had to write that out somewhere so it would hopefully stop being panicky inside me. And now I am going to go home and go back to getting shit done and working things out and I'm going to be fine, and if I'm lucky, I might even lose my grumpy mood now I've grumbled. Who knows.

SIGNIFICANCE OF MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH AND IT’S INDICATION FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN OUR COMMUNITIES
Maternal and child health is one of the socio-economic predicaments in South Africa. The way to tackle this predicament was the implementation of the Millennium Developmental goals. This resulted in a 50% decrease in child mortality for children younger than 5 years old. New-borns account for 45% of child mortality below 5 years (Sonn & Roman 2019). I am going to unpack maternal and child health and how it then implicates the Profession of Occupational Therapy in our communities.
Maternal and health care is crucial for a child's lifelong health. One of the measures to promote maternal and child health in our communities was the implementation of the primary health care approach. This promoted maternal and child health by having antenatal health care easily accessible to service users. Protection and promotion of maternal and child health start at prenatal care as this is a pivotal period for primary health and nutrition in the mother and the child to improve the pregnancy outcomes.
“ A good mental and physical health is the start of women being prepared for the unborn child and the disruptions during pregnancy such as undue stress, depression, and anxiety can have negative effects on the women and the fetus” ( Britto, 2017) as cited in (Sonn & Roman 2019 ). Postnatal depression contributes to consequential effects on the infant's cognitive-emotional development, psychopathology, and atypical development. This affects mostly cognitive development which includes language development and intelligence.
Due to the economic health being in shambles, they often decrease the length of stay in the hospitals thus resulting in the child being discharged while still needing medical intervention and the mother is most of the time not able to look after the child. Parent education programs work best in such cases to improve the competency of the mothers on how to better care for their children. Many factors impact maternal and child health in our South African communities namely, nutrition, access to health care, mother and child transmission of HIV, socioeconomic status and education. However most maternal and neonatal deaths can be prevented.
The biggest question now is, how does Occupational Therapy fit in promoting maternal and child health in our communities? As mentioned, that maternal and child ill-health affects early development thus resulting in delayed milestones and this informs the need for Occupational Therapy intervention. However, I feel that there is more than can be done to prevent major complications after birth. This means that Occupational therapist should be involved in the early stages of pregnancy for every mother that is not copping and struggling to bond with their unborn child. This informs the need for an occupational therapist working with the mothers through doing support groups. There is a need for this as if the mother is not in their right state of mind, she will not be able to care for herself and the unborn child and this may affect the normal development of the child. Also, do health promotion talks with the mothers at the clinics.
After birth and the child has been identified to have complications, most mothers do not know how to cake for their children, and some may be in denial this resulting in the child developing secondary problems. The Occupational therapist then must educate the mother on what the child has problems with and then empower the mother on how to better care for their children. Doing home programs and consistently reviewing the programs to see for the child is progressing. It is important to be realistic as possible to the mothers as most of them expect their children to recover quickly and if it is not happening as they expected they will lose interest in coming for therapeutic interventions.
According to all that I have mentioned above, my opinion is that for the Occupational therapist to promote maternal and child health in our communities they should be involved in early stages and not only come to provide intervention after the baby has been born with the complications that could have been prevented in the very first beginning. Not only in Occupational therapists but our health system should focus more on preventative measures than the curative measures.

The year 2018 is behind us and I must admit I am gad it is over.  This past year ahs been one of the hardest and most challenging and difficult years I ever have known.  It started off with my wife’s major stroke almost a year ago in mid January.  I basically lived in the hospital with her for almost 3 weeks as my oldest daughter kept the house running and took care of her brothers and sister.  I am proud of how well she did.  We get home and I start trying to balance working from home AND juggling my new responsibilities of doing all the housework and maintaining frequent Dr. appointments and therapy and caring for someone who cannot (at least not yet) do anything for herself. In April, my wife’s mother passes away and she is unable to go to the Funeral.  
Following up with that In August the van blows out its engine and we have to replace that to the tune of 4500 dollars.  My daughter started College and moved out.  A proud moment, but also some sadness as she is going away. (plus almost 4000 we had to pay for school).  By this point, funds are starting to get low and I am eating away at my reserves of savings.   But wife’s recovery is going Very well and we are settling into a routine of life that works for the most part.  October comes n and my wife has an unexpected seizure that sets things back a bit and disrupts us as we try to find the cause and get her on new medication to control that and make sure she is stable.  Christmas comes with its own stress as suddenly I am doing All the gift buying, decorating and preparing.  Then in Mid December I get hit in a car wreck and our van is Totaled.  Now the new year is starting..  It is a new start that will have its own challenges and difficulties but also blessings.  
What do I take from this year?  With all that has happened what are the blessings?  What are the ways God has worked?
First and Foremost I still have my wife.  She survived and she is for the most prt the same woman she was.  She is still a wonderful loving wife and mother and despite lingering aphasia which is still improving she is mostly the same woman I married 20 years ago. 
Our oldest daughter Graduated High School and has started College and is becoming an adult.  I am proud of her and how she has become an independent young woman.  She was forced to really grow up and take on a lot this year and I think it has been good for her.  
I think though what has come from this year.  I have learned again how much I love my wife.  We have been in a pretty poor place in our marriage for the past several years and it wasn’t getting any better.  I loved her but things in our relationship were strained at best.  I have learned more how to communicate, though I still struggle.  I have been reminded of how precious she is to me and what she means and our marriage is stronger now than it has been in quite a long time.  I have learned that i have to rely on God and that i have to hold onto my faith because there is nothing else.

I decided to play it cool, kissed my baby Terry good morning, picked her out of bed and snatched Tammy off his `dada`s` chest.
“Good morning Baby T, aaaaw Mama is here its okay…” and passed Tim like he wasn’t there.
“oooh hii ndio christmas sasa? Ni nini Beb” by the time he was finished talking I was gone.
I rushed to the kitchen to prepare my angels something to snack on as I made breakfast, that’s when I realized it was 7 O`clock, I was late for their daily routine, I was still feeling down and since Tim was in, I was at ease but just wanted him to go away.
Breakfast was different, I served my babies and concentrated as if we were the only ones at the dining table, Tim tried keeping busy with Terry and his `dada` but I kept filling their mouths to disrupt their conversation.
How dare he spoil one of my special days, how dare he see no worth of spending time and creating a culture of family Christmas together, oooh hell, it will take another year if he would say he will make up for it, this were the thoughts fighting for space in my head.
We had a major brawl, Yes, in front of the kids, big mistake I know, but I had no time of minding my mannerism, I had to deal with him, I wanted to piss him off so he could leave the house.
I had to remind him of how important Christmas was to me and how it is important it be important to our kids too, how I missed the opportunity to laugh and have fun with my family knowing he would be around, how I missed having him around, how I got pissed of how he played with my food last night, how I….i was fire, but he wouldn’t bulge.

I felt defeated and just stared at him with so much rage, I hated him so much but the love was deeper, I felt like I should let him be accountable for what he did yesterday, because if I did not he would do it next and next time again.
I thought about how I hated fighting in my marriage, how I imagined my marriage to be, peaceful, ever loving, trusting, a space for each of us to thrive better, a space to give meaning to our existence and hard work.
I looked at him and remembered how he struggled to have me, I was not about to change our vision over this. He was mine.
“get yourself together, and prepare my bag, I will be headed to Voi, there is a new deal and we need to set up office in Voi before new year, bear with me for now,” Tim took `dada` and Terry outside. Left me still staring at him.
Well three days to new year and Tim was back with goodies and all kind of kindness, he looked a bit skinny and sweaty and rough, I could tell his beard was grown and he had sunburns.
I was glad to have my husband back, who knows what hell he has been through. Though he kept in touch during the trip, he never sounded how he now looks like apart from being fatigue, in our conversations we talked about our little brawl and promised each other not to do that again.
We had promised each other a heart to heart conversation when he came back. I waited for him to freshen up, we had our dinner, did the dishes as he mingle with the girls till he put them to bed.
I am a hopless romantic, had made something special for us at our balcony overlooking the beautiful garden next to the pool, our room was on the first floor and I loved unwinding there.
I had set his favorite red wine, some chocolates, berries, crisps and nuts. Music was playing on the background, my oldies and this time it was the song `Total eclipse of the Heart` I have never had enough of itand Tim got to love it because I did.
This time I did something out of the norm, I laid my favorite soft pillows on my beautiful carpet, had some warm blankets and had the Christmas twinkling lights on, I thought here is my Christmas and Tim was here, what else could I ask for?
Wait for it, I also unpacked his bag and had put his documents aside so that he would take me through them and the partnering deal and what it meant for him, for us.
Well, we had a beautiful night, one thing led to another, from catching up on our favourite balcony seats, one thing led to another, we had our beautiful moments, at some point we promised to be more prayerful and supportive and be the best partners and parents to our babies, we even went to check on them and prayed with them. It was midnight but it seemed so early.
We settled down on the pillows I had set for the night, I saw him pull the work file next to him and asked me why it was there. He looked at me and I politely asked him to update me.
He was hesitant and started giving me excuses like; can`t it wait till morning, and since when have I been interested in what he does…blab la bla.
I was still in the happy mood, I pulled it off his hands in a playfull manner, he struggled to pull it back and after a minute or so, I realized this was serious, I did let him have his file, but he accidentally let it out of his hands and vwalaaaa!

Suddenly, Tim was holding me tightly in his arms, remember we were still on the floor so I was near the documents and could also read part of the shit of paper, how possible? How come? Why?

He goes on to speak about the ethical vision in Beethoven’s music, a sense of “reaching out for something that was almost attainable,” the possibility for a more fair and just society that, in Beethoven’s day, still glittered beckoningly on the horizon. Two world wars, he continues, shattered that vision and showed us “that the veneer of civilization was really just a veneer.” These days, he says, the ethical striving and idealism still present in Beethoven’s music all too rarely find an echo in our contemporary world.
“But,” ever the optimist, Ma continues, “with the new tools and understanding we have, could there be a more hopeful humanistic philosophy, or a way of thinking that can unite us and propel us forward, maybe not to the same utopian ideal but at least toward being in balance between ourselves and our planet?”
This is not how most musicians typically begin an interview. Ma’s mind is a vast storehouse of ideas, associations, curiosities, streams of thought. “When you ask Yo-Yo a question, his brain comes up simultaneously with 100 different ways of answering,” says Sara Wolfensohn, an old friend.
“I need to be fed ideas,” Ma tells me, though he’s also got a lot of his own. He thinks knowledge is overly siloed in today’s world. He wants to put science back in conversation with the arts. He loves the concept in ecology of the “edge effect,” the notion that biodiversity is richest at the borderline between two ecosystems, and he frequently employs it as a metaphor. He also wants culture to play a more central role in society as a gateway to things our country appears to be decidedly lacking at the moment: trust, empathy, and humility. He views all three as critical to the world’s thriving into the future. And these days, he explains, he is often thinking generationally, both about the limits of his own and the birth of the next.
“I’m about to become a grandfather for the third time,” Ma says, his face widening into that smile that routinely warms the chilliest of concert halls. “And I know that while I’m not going to see the year 2100,” he continues, “someone very close to me probably will. But what is that world going to be like? What is my part in handing them whatever I’ve been responsible for, and what are they going to think about it? These are not abstract questions to me anymore. They’re real questions. Pre-pandemic, the big frustration was that we were spending the great majority of our time producing things,” he adds. “Now I think so much more about meaning and purpose.”
It’s also safe to say that Ma — before the pandemic, too — had thought about these topics once or twice. At-home viewers of the videos he has been creating from his living room can sometimes spot, behind Ma’s right shoulder, a picture of his hero, the legendary Catalan cellist Pablo Casals. The image is framed next to a quote from Casals that Ma has always prized: “I am a man first, an artist second. As a man, my first obligation is to the welfare of my fellow men. I will endeavor to meet this obligation through music — the means which God has given me — since it transcends language, politics and national boundaries. My contribution to world peace may be small, but at least I will have given all I can to an ideal I hold sacred.”
From the perspective of the classical music world today, Casals’s sentiment may sound decidedly old-fashioned. In their own era, men like Casals and Leonard Bernstein had political and social visions, and they spoke beyond classical audiences to address a wider public (John F. Kennedy once said that Bernstein was the only man he “would never run against for political office”). But as the field’s share of prestige in the culture at large has shrunk, so too has the ethical purview of its leading voices. These days, the field’s stars tend to traffic within a more circumscribed cultural sphere, even as they try, when possible, to expand the music’s reach.
Artistic paths rarely follow a straight line. In Ma’s case, one can’t say exactly what led to what, nor is he in a rush to tell you. But in the years following his trip to the Kalahari Desert, Ma began authoring new scripts for building a life of meaning in music. Genre demarcations, which had long been the guardrails of his path through music, suddenly seemed less relevant. While he continued his concerto appearances and solo work, Ma was also suddenly playing the tangos of Astor Piazzolla, and then recording a bluegrass-inflected album, Appalachia Waltz, with the fiddle player Mark O’Connor and bassist Edgar Meyer. Music-making was, in short, becoming less of “a formal thing.” And perhaps the San notion of an instrument being little more than a means to an end had also seeped in somewhere. Around this time, Ma absentmindedly left his $2.5 million Montagnana cello in the trunk of a New York City taxi. (It was recovered.)
Even as he ventured musically further afield, the Bach suites remained Ma’s magnetic north. But he no longer felt compelled to plumb their mystery as part of a solitary quest, choosing instead, in the late 1990s, to work with six directors to create a series of six films, each inspired by one of the suites. Then in 2000, Ma founded Silkroad, a global collective of musicians inspired by the cross-cultural connections that flourished in the lands along the ancient Silk Road trading route. The attacks of September 11, 2001, and the waves of xenophobia that followed, seemed only to reinforce the need for listening across cultures. Headquartered in Boston, Silkroad is still thriving some two decades later.
Three decades later, Ma is now well practiced at seeking out what’s needed. Over the course of the last year, in addition to the recorded videos, the live-streamed performances, and the tour on the flatbed truck, he has released a new album, Songs of Comfort and Hope, with pianist Kathryn Stott, and he has brought his ideas on music and healing directly to the source by performing over Zoom in hospitals. Among the communities Ma has played for privately several times are front-line health care workers at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“It was a time of tremendous anxiety and unbelievable stress,” says Dr. Kathy May Tran, a hospitalist at Mass. General who coordinated his first performance in May for roughly 200 health care workers. “But the chance to connect over music, together with Yo-Yo’s words of care and support, and just the priority of gratitude that he embodies, were restorative to our entire community and gave us the strength to continue. That sounds corny, but it’s completely true.”
Since the pandemic began, Ma has also become involved with a national nonprofit called Project: Music Heals Us, which arranges virtual private concerts for hospital patients. The group to date has connected 161 musicians from across the country with over 3,100 patients in 23 hospitals, many of whom are severely isolated from family and even from most hospital staff due to COVID protocols. The contributing musicians come from all corners of the profession, though it’s fair to say not many are internationally renowned soloists. At one point, project organizers say, a patient at Houston Methodist hospital told his physical therapist that later in the day he would be receiving a private performance from Yo-Yo Ma. The clinician responded by noting that the patient was apparently suffering from delusions, only to later enter the ICU and find that Yo-Yo Ma was indeed there on an iPad, giving a private performance of the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts.”
“Musicians like Yo-Yo and many others could have taken the path of least resistance and easily avoided the pandemic altogether,” Dr. Tran says. “Instead, they chose to walk into it head on. In medicine and science, there is the concept of a catalyst, an entity or substance that creates a chemical reaction that can be lasting, permanent, transformative. During this pandemic, Yo-Yo has been a catalyst.”
Back in our Zoom interview, the hour has grown late and Ma has grown introspective. “We’re a country that was invented by a group of very smart people,” he says. “We’re living the American experiment, and we want the experiment to succeed and thrive. We want homo sapiens to thrive and survive. I ask myself, What does a 65-year-old do next? I want to be useful, I want to respond to need. I want to try, in whatever years I have, to do things with as much meaning and impact as possible.”
The questioning might imply that an answer would involve a departure from his recent roles, and it’s true that Ma has rarely stayed in one place, artistic or geographic, for long. But it also depends on one’s vantage point. Pull back the camera on his journey and one begins to see not wanderings but through-lines, as even Ma seems to concede. “My interests have always started with people,” he says. “Who they are, why they think and do what they do.”
That observation surely applies to Ma’s music as well. The most powerful performers have an almost mystical way of blurring the lines between interpreting and creating. They attempt to inhabit the composer’s way of seeing. To do so, Ma once said, “One must go out of oneself, finding empathy for another’s experience, forming another world.”
The key word here is empathy. It is what bridges Ma’s work as a musician and his social consciousness. Returning to the composer Leon Kirchner’s challenge, one might say empathy is the true center of Ma’s tone. And yes, he’s found it. And built on it his life.

Challenge Roth - 2019
I signed up for this (my second full distance triathlon) before having ever completed my first. I randomly saw a tweet from the race organizer that several registrants had not completed the sign up process and they were re-releasing the entries. I wrote a hasty email not thinking I’d be one of the first to respond and was amazed that I was able to nab a spot. Knowing that I could try to sign up for the race lottery for the next years and never get an entry I took advantage and decided to go for it. I though it would be a nice ‘A race’ for the summer not knowing how Barcelona would go or what else Carly and I would be getting into for travel.  Fast forward a bit and I qualified for Kona at Barcelona so Roth became much more of a ‘fun’ race, but still an important tune up and experience before going to the big island. I was excited to race the distance again and experience the fabled Challenge Roth atmosphere.
Though the body seemingly had other plans, in late January/February I thought what was a strained groin turned out to be a mild hernia. Carly and I joke that I literally ‘busted a gut’ at Barcelona. The other line was that the my body was rejecting me and this was a not so sublt hint to cut this shit out. Regardless, I took quick action and scheduled the surgery ASAP knowing that I’d have a bit of downtime and then slow build back to form. I was able to maintain general fitness right up till the scheduled surgery date.
Thanks to private insurance the surgery itself was an amazing easy process and my doctor was amazing. We schedule the surgery they day I got back from a trip to the USA for work. Literally….. off a red-eye at Heathrow and into the Hospital. I was a sight. That was Tuesday, February 19th. Not knowing most people take two weeks off of work for this thing I went to work the next day. I was slow moving to say the least but it i’d go nuts sitting around the house. I took a walk a few days later and Carly forbade me to get on my bike…. for a week. On the 28th I started doing some easy rides and slowly worked into some easy runs. I got in the pool for the first time on March 17th, nearly a month later. The week of March 18th was my first week ‘back’ in building fitness. I had a mountain to climb in the ten weeks to prepare for Roth.
During the down time it was tough to see instagram filled with everyone out on the spring training camps and gearing up for earlier season racing as my fitness plummeted. But I filled the time trying to ‘think’ about some of the aspects of racing I don’t usually get to ponder and to consider a few of my gear choices.
I knew I was in capable hands and that my fitness would return and it was better to take the time now and make a proper recover and gains than risk greater damage. I slowly got back into my standard routine of cycling to work, running and eventually swimming. I had the odd sting or stretch but overall the recovery went very well. The rest was also good mentally, I knew that the summer was going to be long and that I had two very big races on my calendar that I needed to stay ‘checked into’ I was able to spend some time thinking about my racing, things that were important to me and places I wanted to develop. I didn’t pull everything I thought about into my training or racing but it was good to think about some of these things, research, listen to what others had to say and spend my time preparing and know why I was (or wasnt).

This doesn’t take account an average of 39 miles (3 hours) a week of commuting. A complete week of commuting would be 75 (5 hours) but that sometimes doesn’t happen with other work or professional commitments. I don’t count the cycling as part of ‘training’ but it doest factor into general recovery or how I’m feeling in terms of energy level. The commute is also good for bike handling skills and distressing at the end of the day.
Trips taken… work and pleasure
I fly back to the USA about every eight to ten weeks so I was able to put my next trip off till mid-april which allowed me to get into a good rythm with training before the next disruption. I made a bit of a weekend out of it and and saw some family on the weekend after which was a nice way to end the (short) trip. My parents live in rural NH so there was ample time (and space) to get a few runs under my belt.

Live Free or Die.
May was quite but June saw us traveling to the states for two full weeks for two weddings and my sisters graduation. I took the bike over and used the time to get in some long rides up into the white mountains and around Maine as well as open water swims in Sebago. We planned to take a week of ‘work’ and then a week of holiday so it was the first week that I was most concerned with continuing the gains where once I was on ‘holiday’ it would be slightly easier to find the time.

Carly’s mom organized this mural in Maine and the ‘sister’ mural in Iraq. Both painted with the assistance of young kids to show there is more that unites than divides us.
However, it was not an easy ask as we had a full slate of friends and family to see during the week. There was a fair bit of running around the eastern seaboard seeing friends and family but all totally worth it.
At the end of the weeks I had been able to put in a couple of quality longer bike and run efforts and got to race week at very nearly the same ‘fitness’ that I had with Barcelona. That summer played out much differently with more racing including London Marathon and 70.3 WC’s so the fitness was much deeper then but I was happy with how fast I was able to get my body ready.

Roth itself….
As soon as I entered I held a spot at a hotel in Nuremberg and began looking for an Airbnb closer to the race start. I knew that many stayed in Nuremberg so it wasn’t ‘bad’ but staying in Roth or Hipolstien was far better. Luckily enough, after much checking I snagged a great place in Hipolstien next to the train station and was able to cancel the hotel. As a whole house it had more than enough space for Carly and I to enjoy the weekend and the race atmosphere and made it very easy to get to/from Roth on the train for briefings and to/from the race finish.
Carly and I flew into Munich Thursday evening and after a quick car rental pickup were shooting north very, very, quickly on the Autobahn to Roth. We stopped for a quick bite to eat that evening on our way up and crashed once we got in. Friday morning I woke and walked down to the swim start for a short swim in the canal during the allocated trial time. Afterwards, Carly and I met up for a food shop and I assembled my bike. Once assembled I was out for a ride to test everything out and short run to get the legs moving. During the ride I went to check-in and crossed that off the list. The check-in process on Friday mid day was very easy and I was in/out in ten minutes. Very well managed.
I spent the remainder of the day Friday and Saturday preparing my gear and setting up the my prototype hydration bladder for the bike (more on this later). Once prepped it was a decent amount of relaxing and just enjoying ourselves around the house and small town.

Saturday I had a quick ride and run followed by dropping my bike off at T1. The race also requires you drop off the run bag so that it can be transported to T2. I had scored an amazing rack spot right at the end of a row and next to the pro’s so my run out of T1 was very easy and no searching for my bike!

Saturday was very hot so we spent the rest of the day relaxing around the house trying to avoid getting dehydrated. I spent a bit of time prepping my bottles for the next day and double checking everything I could.

Race day….
Up at 4:30, had a Honey stinger wafer and banana and some PH. Out the door by just before 5 am to walk to T1. Got to T1 as a rain started but before the majority of crowds so was able to get easy access to bathrooms and sort the bike quickly and drop off the bike bag. I spent a few minutes chilling under a tree with Carly trying to avoid the rain but soon enough it was time to dawn the wetsuit and get this party started. I felt fueled, hydrated and ready.
I made my way back into T1 and over to the starting pen. As I had indicated a Sub 9:00 hour goal I was placed into a distinct starting group just after the pro men and women start. I was a bit psyched (nervous) about this as it would leave the roads a bit more clear for the first loop of the bike and make it a bit easier to pace and see where I was for the race in terms of place.

I started at about the middle of the starting line 2-3 people back from the front. I was terrified that I’d get kicked in/around my incision during the swim so my primary goal was to make it through the swim unharmed. Once the cannon fired it was an instant washing machine. Definitely the most hectic swim start I’ve ever participated in and given that all the people there were quick it continued on for a while. I have no illusions of fast swimming to tried to just stick to my race and my pace and get into a good rhythm. Being in a canal the swim is calm and course simple. Down with the current and then back against with a quick out and back the other way just before the finish. I was consciously ‘pushing’ but not killing myself. I know that sometimes i allow my mind to wander when swimming so I kept checking in to keep focus and maintain pace. I wanted to get a sub 60 swim and thought that with the ‘easier’ course versus the rough seas on Barcelona it would be doable.

On exit I glanced at my watch 60:41… fuck.. pretty much the exact same time as Barcelona. Not a bad time by any measure but I had been hoping (expecting) a slightly quicker swim. Oh well, no time to dwell on it and right into T1. The volunteers are amazing and had my gear dumped and sorted quickly. Socks and number on and out to the bike. I momentarily grabbed my bike and started running before I realized I didn’t have my helmet on which was on the bars. Big no no…. stopped and helmet on before any harm done (officials saw).

Swim – 60:41 – 251st OA
Out to the start line and on the bike…

I wanted to give a solid effort on the bike here and shave time off the 4:49 from Barcelona. The course is rolling but giving the amazing road surfaces you always have the ability to move fast.
The bike course is stunning and it passes through some lovely german countryside and towns. There are people lining the entire course cheering which makes the atmosphere even better. Every hill you’re treated with cheering fans on both sides.

With the prototype bladder my goal was to take in the just under 2 liters in the bike as well as two (and a half) bottles on the bike for a mix of fluids and fuel. I’d supplement this with half a honey stinger wafer every 30 minutes or so for some ‘real’ calories.
The bladder worked amazing well and it was great to be able to take small swigs while in aero position or whenever desired. I supplemented that with bottles when it started to run dry or I wanted to larger draw of fluid. Overall it worked really well and I was able to move over and ignore all the aid stations. I don’t think this really saved me any time but it certainly goes to a level of confidence that I can have everything I need for a full distance race right on my bike and not be beholden to the aid stations and be carrying it in a very aero manner (inside the bike). Certainly if it had been hotter (or I had lost a bottle) I would have taken water or other from the stations.  I’ll continue to refine my fueling mix and the bladder itself to maximize the volume and make sure I’m getting the type of energy I need during the bike.

The highlight of the bike was easily Solar Hill. Rolling through Hipolstien you round a small corner and there is just a mass of people in front of you. They’re screaming and making noise and right in your face. Its hard not to push up the hill and takes a fair amount to ride the hill ‘like a triathlete’.  I clocked through the second loop at around 2:20ish and felt happy with the pace though wanted to be a bit quicker.

The second loop I kept on the gas and took a bit of solice in that I saw two Freespeed athletes come up to me about halfway through the second lap. I rode with them for a good portion of the remainder of the race and felt it was a good indicator that I was moving along well and where I sat in the overall leaderboard.
I did over cook one decent through a small town and had to bunny hop the bike up on the curb at about 30 mph and then back off to keep from hitting the shoulder. I scared a good portion of the crowd who must have thought I was a gonner… also got my heart going…. really didn’t want to be ‘that American’ who couldn’t keep it right side up.

Bike 4:46 – 82nd OA
Marathon…
Rolling into T2 I saw a lot of bags still on the ground around my number so knew I was in ‘decent’ position but had some work ahead of me. A very quick transition saw my shoes and PH hat on and I was out the door. I think I had the 9th fastest T2 of the day…
I had a goal of wanting to run sub 3 for the marathon and knew the splits I needed to run to achieve that. I started out feeling strong and set off a bit under that pace hoping to build a buffer. The course brings you first through a bit of town before putting you on two out-n-backs along the canal.
Starting the first I saw Carly which put a bit of pep in my step and I was feeling good. I knew my swim was solid and I had bike taken some time off my bike so I was in good position. Running a sub 3 marathon would really put me across the line with a decent finishing time. I saw the pro women coming back towards me on the first out and back and started to see a number of the fast AG’s as well so knew I wasn’t too far off the lead guys.
I was quickly running with another racer and after a chat realized he to was looking to run about that time so we linked up for the next few miles. After a few aid stations though he dropped back and I continued on at pace. As I passed Carly the second time to start the (longer) out and back to the north of the canal the wind picked up and the sun came out. It started to heat up a bit and my body started to feel tired. Over the next few miles my mind went from ‘sub 3’ to I need to make sub 9 overall. My legs really started to weight and at each aid station I started to go for the coke and fruit. Going for that stuff before mile ten was much earlier in the race than I usually begin going for that sort of thing.

By the time I turned back around and was heading off the canal for Roth I was feeling wrecked. I saw Carly and indicated no joy and tried to get my head into the game. ‘Common man, you’re more than halfway done… suck it up’. The nice bit was that running through town there was way more fans and support which kept the spirits up. It was a bit easier to push and find that energy reserve to keep moving. That said, this was, personally, a very, very rough run. I really felt like throwing in the towel and calling it a day. I felt slow, my legs were like limp sausages. After a couple hours of pushing my body to keep going my mind was also starting to throw in the towel. Failure creeped in and took hold.
But I kept on pushing forward. ‘Just keep moving’ I told myself. If I kept going I would finish, and finishing at the time I would, even if outside my goal is an accomplishment many spend an entire career trying to achieve. Don’t to that dishonor by throwing in the towel now. Keep going.

By the time I made it to the turn around pond with three miles left I knew I’d finish the race and gave it one last go for the downhill miles back to Roth. Back into the crowds I found the last bit of reserve and pushed through the town and into the finish stadium. It was a pretty epic finish scenario with the announcers and crowd in the stands and an experience I’ll not forget.

Run – 3:07 – 57th OA
I crossed the line exhausted but finished. I knew I hadn’t made my place or time goal I had wanted but it was a quality race effort in an amazing venue. I can’t be mad with the performance. Into the recovery tent I went over to the timing services to see how I placed. 8:57… I was amazed, I had (somehow) bested my Barcelona time by a minute and slid in under the 9 hour mark. Given my training leading up to the race this was a great time and an affirmation of my underlying fitness.
The only hit on this race was the post race food. For the last few miles all I could think about was getting some good german sausages once finishing. The smell of fans cooking (and eating) them was thick the last miles. Certainly, I thought, this to would await for me at the finish. However I was disappointed on finish and the food options were rather lack luster. They were well stocked with the offerings they did have and there were some nice options but just not what I (or my body) had in mind at that moment. So after downing a few chocolate milks and pastries I left the tent to find Carly. On finding me she promptly fixed the problem and supplied currywurst and beer which instantly made me feel better. We chilled for a little while and then, with not much more reason to hang around left to find the bus replacement back to Hipolstein. After a short wait and bus ride I was home and showered. We went into the little town and had a quality dinner (avoiding the chaos of Roth) and relaxed with some beers.

At around 8pm we jumped in the car and went back to T2 to pick up my bike and gear. After which we found a place to ditch the car and went to the finishing stadium to cheer on the late finishers and watch the fireworks. It was really something to watch the racers who had been out there for 13/14/15 hours come across the line and receive their medal. I cant imagine being out there and racing for that long… The mental toll (outside of the obvious physical effort) is mind blowing. The fireworks at the end of the evening were the perfect ending to the day and it was nice to get some fireworks in over the 4th of July weekend!

The race provided a number of valuable experiences and I was able to take away some great lessons from both the prep and overall experience.
Good:
2nd Full distance race, 2nd sub 9 hour finish (and on 11.5 hours a week of training)
500 euro back for finishing sub 9 hours
fitness coming back after the surgery with no post race issues
hydration bladder prototype worked well
overall weekend was much more ‘low stress’ than my first full race and gave me a good level of confidence for the distance in Kona
Bad
swim not as expected, if only by a minute or two
biked uneven (in retrospect) and paid the price on the run
run sucked, but with mid 20 mile weeks averaging leading up it is not surprising that a sub 3 marathon didn’t happen
