heyyy, guess who’s back with more thoughts about itoshi rin????

so, we’ve already established that rin is a very extrinsically motivated person, at least when it comes to football. he doesn’t play football for himself, and he never has. and in a setting like blue lock i just don’t think that’s a sustainably way to play football. blue lock is a place that wants people have a real love for the sport, and would play it every single day of their lives if they could. ego wants people who want to win and want to be the best striker in the world.

rin,, doesn’t really want that. sure, he wants to beat isagi and prove his brother wrong, but that’s not really a longterm, sustainable goal. what happens when he succeeds? does he just stop and say, “okay, that’s good enough”? what happens if he never succeeds? if isagi just continually gets better and better and rin never beats him in a way that makes sae acknowledge him?

having extrinsic motivations is good and normal, but you also eventually have to do things that you want to do for you or you’re going to get burnt out. and i feel like that’s the path that rin’s headed towards if we’re being realistic about this. he just goes and goes and goes in a really unsustainable way, and eventually it’s going to catch up to him.

he’s a really interesting foil to isagi, who’s motivations are almost entirely intrinsic. part of why isagi’s mindset feels more sustainable to me is because he really only plays football for himself. he plays because he really loves the sport. and we don’t ever really see that in rin, so i feel like it’s eventually going to kind of blow up in his face as we’ve seen in previous rounds of blue lock.

or i’m entirely wrong about this. idk, i’m not kaneshiro. i’m just saying that i don’t think that rin’s got anything sustainable going on in how he plays football ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

thank you so much!!! i actually really enjoyed writing picket fence and also writing sae. he has a very particular way about love to me that makes him really fascinating because a lot of his emotions to me are founded on deep respect

but he is very dishonest with a flat affect so despite himself he is unable to be sincere unless provoked slightly. it's not that reader isn't beautiful to him!! or extremely attractive. but also he doesn't need the seduction because reader just Being is enough.

the itoshi brothers are incredibly possessive that is just biblical canon to me but rin is one billion times worse. sae is also bad because he does genuinely think rin could take you if he wanted

Part two of me being pedantic about nuance because I can

While the official translation isn't wrong at all, I feel like the phrasing chosen here makes Nagi appear more distant than he actually is. In japanese, his inner monologue is more akin to "I'm sorry, Reo. Please, let me say something a bit selfish"

He's using causative. He's asking Reo's permission. And sure, we could make a case for how he doesn't say that aloud, so it's a moot point... But the implication is that he knows Reo won't like this but he wants Reo to be okay with it. For his sake. Just this once.

And "I'm gonna say something selfish" doesn't convey that at all. If anything, it makes it sound like he knows Reo won't like it and he doesn't care

this is some scenes that happened between you bllk characters then they remember that you broke up (the brainrot is real):

isagi: was making dinner for two since it was his day, served two plates, removed the unwanted extras from your plate that you didn't like, called you out to eat for a minute, then the realization of you two were broken up hits him like a brick. actually keeps staring at your filled plate and empty place then ruffle his head in frustration.

sae: when he would move too much in his sleep, uncomfortable. so his hand unintentionally keeps searching to embrace you, it was oddly empty, cold. he figured maybe you were in the bathroom? so his teal eyes kept staring patiently at the door, waiting for you to come back so he can cuddle you to sleep already. when you take too long he just realized that you weren't even here to began with. 一ends up hugging a billow to sleep, definitely not a makeshift of you一

reo: accidentally ordered for two, he doesn't even grasp what he had said, it was like a muscle memory he can't erase. only realized when the food came, and it was your favorite alongside. cried himself to sleep while hugging a picture of you that night.

rin: had a bone-chilling nightmare, the second he wakes up sweaty and cold he keeps mumbling your name and heedlessly reaching for you to clasp. soon realized he was actually alone, you weren't there to clutch him out of the cold, harsh world, to bring his heart back to it natural beating. so he sleeps alone that night, he wakes up with a wet billow the next morning for some reason.

nagi: holds the door, realizes you're not even there. kept his eyes clung at what was supposed to be your spot for a while, as if you'll magically appear again and give him a thankful peck for being a gentleman like you always used to. that never happened. stays quiet the rest of the night, probably thinking about something. he never got to tell you that he actually does those 'gentlemanly' stuff just because he'd rather feel your lips against his frigid skin where his heart would bloom ever so lovingly.

chigiri: accidentally bought a shampoo you used to love, since the stores keeps running out of it and that'll ruin your whole week and most importantly: you'd be sad with a sulk glued to your face, he never found a joy in seeing you upset, so he thought he'd surprise you by it. it was a sucker punch when he realized that you two no longer lived together. maybe he used your shampoo once, maybe twice. it was just because he ran out of his, not because he'd be reminded by scent of your hair, where he uses to kiss the most..

Bachira: saw a black cat and a golden retriever cuddling down the street, the first thing that popped up his mind was sending it to you and saying 'us!', keeps searching for your content for half an hour until he remembered you two weren't in contact anymore. in an instant, his eyes were watering and now he was sobbing in the middle of the street. maybe he misses you a little, just a little.

isagi reaches out to place a hand on yours, mumbling, “baby, are you mad at me?” as he gently rubs his thumb back and forth across your knuckles with a concerned furrow to his eyebrows. when you don't reply, he unconsciously juts out his bottom lip just a little bit in a worried pout, “c'mon honey, don't ignore me.”

nagi doesn't care, he just clings onto you tightly, pulling you to lie on top of him on the couch as he sleepily nuzzles against the crook of your neck before deciding to settle with his forehead against your shoulder. “lemme sleep, pretty,” he murmurs tiredly, placing lazy kisses on your skin. “don't ignore me when i wake up.”

michael lays down with his head in your lap, looking up at you with puppy-dog eyes. “mein liebchen,” he all but whines, “pay attention to me.” when you don't reply he maintains eye contact with you as he takes one of your hands in his and brings it up to his mouth, peppering teasing kisses from your finger tips all the way to your wrists, doing anything he could to get a reaction out of you.

bachira sits on your lap with a contagious grin and presses kisses all over your face, trying to get you to cave. “this is fun,” he giggles as he places his hands on either of your cheeks and squishes your face— not enough to make you annoyed, but enough to make your lips pucker slightly. he giggles even more at the sight and brushes his nose against yours, “babe… you're so pretty”

rin glares at you, frowning. “you really want to do this?” he asks, tilting his head to the side. when you don't reply, he places a hand on your shoulder, rolling his eyes, “come on, we both know you can only do this for so long.” he sighs, almost dramatically, before using the hand on your shoulder to gently pull you back towards him, wrapping an arm around your waist as he huffs, “fine. be like that then.”

reo is dramatic for no reason whatsoever. he grabs your hands and holds them tenderly, looking heart broken and overcome with sadness as he asks, “do you not love me anymore, baby?” his eyes look as if they're almost tearing up, but all he wants to do is press your buttons up to the point where you have to acknowledge him, even if it's just so you can tell him to shut up.

sae stares at you from across the room with narrowed eyes, unimpressed. “so, how long are you planning on doing this?” he asks in a deadpan voice, folding his arms across his chest as he stares you down. when you don't reply he rolls his eyes but his demeanor only lasts for maximum twenty minutes because the next thing you know, he's wrapping his arms around you from the back and placing his chin on your shoulder.

oliver grins at you, shaking his head with a chuckle, “you're really gonna try to ignore me, baby?” he laughs at your silence, almost teasingly continuing to trace a finger in circles on your hip, grin still on his face as he leans in tantalizingly close. “you can do this all day baby, but i'm not going to give up just yet either.”
