my current skincare routine 🫧🧴
Tumblr media Tumblr media
concerns ♡ oily skin, hormonal acne, scars, pores, sensitive skin? idk
cleansing ♡
cleansing my skin is one of my favorite steps! i love removing all the impurities on skin and prepping my skin for the next steps. i always double cleanse {even though i don’t wear makeup} and massage the cleanser in for 60 secs and rinse with warm water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
exfoliation ♡
i have sensitive skin, so i’m careful not to over exfoliate or use harsh techniques/ingredients, but i still like having smooth skin :3 . i do this step 2-3 times a week using either the exfoliating cloth i got from fenty beauty or an exfoliating cleanser. with either a physical or chemical exfoliant, i’m really gentle and just lightly buff away the dead skin to reveal the beautiful soft supple skin underneath. <3
toner ♡
just recently i started exploring toners with active ingredients! i used to always use witch hazel and call it a day but i became curious abt korean or japanese beauty and what their skincare is like. i have a ‘special’ liquid toner {the strawberry milk pure cure from the creme shop} and toner pads {one step moisture from cosrx} both are super hydrating which i love and the strawberry milk one smells super good. <333
tmi but in high school i used to use straight alcohol as a toner 🫣 and i remembered i burned my skin from being to rough with it pFFT!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mask ♡
i’m absolutely obsessed with sheet masks. they’ve become quite the addictive purchase and frequently used in my routine and i’m not upset abt that. they’re also very relaxing and my skin feels so rejuvenated after. i always follow the directions on the pack for time limit and then pat the leftover essence into my skin. {bonus points bc i use the extra essence on my body :3} i a l s o have an overnight sleeping mask from laniege which applies like a moisturizer rather than a sheet mask.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
moisturizer ♡
my moisturizer really does depend on a few factors: my skin condition, time of day, and season/weather. i rotate between a gel cream, heavy cream, or light lotion/cream. gel creams are for my breakout/oiliest days; light creams are for normal skin condition, daytime and warmer days; and heavy creams are for drier skin, colder weather, and nights. {i hope that made sense}
Tumblr media Tumblr media
treatment ♡
treatments are the extra steps i take when my skin needs it. recently i just weathered a serious breakout and my skin is scarred to the high heavens </3 so when i get the chance i use a spot treatment to help fade scars and help my skin heal {what acne? spot treatment by the creme shop} i also have a few of their acne patches in cute heart, star, and cloud shapes which i use to speed healing and protect the area from further irritation.
tips ♡
always start with clean hands and tools
pat, don’t rub
let your products set for a minute or two in between steps for maximum absorption
after finishing your routine, allow your face to absorb everything for 5-10 mins before wearing a mask, applying makeup or going to bed etc
change pillow cases often
introduce a only few new products a months to avoid extreme irritation
most importantly: do what works for you 🫶🏽
as always,
thanks for reading 🛁

Tips for caring for blackberries in the fall
Tumblr media
Blackberry is similar to raspberry except that its fruit first turns red and then charcoal black. To me, they have a more interesting taste than raspberries, but the seeds are more visible on the teeth. Thanks to the work of plant breeders and the completely thornless varieties they have produced, and thanks to travelers and tourists who have brought new foreign varieties with high-quality fruit to our continent, blackberries are becoming more and more popular and can be seen more and more often on garden plots. However, blackberries tend to grow well only on a trellis, which must be erected in the second year of planting on the plot. The trellis can be placed in the most primitive place. If you have a dozen varieties of blackberries on the plot, plant them with a distance of 6.5 feet (2 meters) between rows so that they do not interfere with each other.
At the edge of the rows, hammer in ordinary metal tubes of 5-6inch (12-15 cm) diameter, make holes in them, and stretch strong wire through them. From the second year on, you can hang blackberry shoots from the wire or twine. Throughout the summer you will be harvesting blackberries and when autumn comes you will be wondering what to do next and how to caring for blackberries! Don't worry: before you remove the blackberry from its stand and place it on a bed of soft leaves or wrap it up with it, you need to prune it hygienically and fertilize it, combined with hydration and moisturizing.
PRUNING BLACKBERRIES There are many subtleties here. You must prune in such a way as to ensure the full growth and development of your blackberry plants later on. Of course, the first order of business is to remove all broken, dry, diseased shoots (no doubt about it), but what's next? Next, you need to relentlessly cut off all shoots that have already borne fruit this year. However, if you are a lucky resident of the southern United States, it is possible not to cut them off completely, but to shorten them to a height of 5 feet (1.5 meters).
All other blackberry shoots, in the current season, unfortunately, our harvest did not satisfy us and you need to prune, removing about 6-8inch (15-20 cm). Most likely, this immature part, even under mulch, will start to behave badly: it may freeze, start to rot, and decay. Naturally, after such an event, all the cut blackberry shoots must be taken out of the area and be sure to burn them, the ashes can be put in a bag: it will come in handy. Let her eat a little, but it (we do not tire of repeating) contains potassium and trace elements that can be fed to, for example, houseplants.
FERTILIZING AND WATERING BLACKBERRIES In what order to do these necessary procedures does not matter at all. Fertilize first and then water, or water first, and then spread the fertilizer on the moist soil - the way you think best.
WATERING BLACKBERRIES Watering well is really just hydrating and moisturizing. If someone tells you he doesn't water his blackberries at all and he has a luxurious yield every year, he is either lying or he has never seen a luxurious yield of blackberries at all. In the first year after planting, when there is no trellis yet, you can only pour 3-4 buckets per square meter of soil. This is best done at the beginning of October when the soil is definitely not frozen yet and it is best to loosen it slightly beforehand. But remember, it should only be loosened slightly. The roots of blackberries must not be touched, and if the roots are damaged then they will start to grow and regrow shoots from the ground (usually with thorns, even if the original shoots did not have any thorns at all). Plants that are still on the trellis, that is, the second and later years after planting, will of course need to be watered twice as much. This is fine. The water will soak deep into the soil and freeze slowly, without causing any damage to the roots. And, if there is a provocative winter thaw, the roots are unlikely to respond to it, and this thawing of blackberries will not cause any damage.
FERTILIZING BLACKBERRIES After watering (let's decide to do just that) fertilize. 50 grams per square meter of dry calcium superphosphate and 25 grams per square meter of potassium sulfate have proven to be the best for blackberries in the fall. You can also cover them with humus about 1 inch thick.
Important! Nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied in autumn, as this will stimulate the growth activity of the shoots and all of them will freeze, maybe even in the quilt.
The easiest thing is done, now it is necessary to carefully remove and cover the blackberry bushes from the trellis.
Important! Alas, but absolutely no damage to the blackberries can withstand frosts of a few tens of degrees Fahrenheit without exceeding a few tens of degrees Fahrenheit. Then already begin negative changes in the tissue, especially at the tips of the shoots. There have been cases where temperatures have dropped sharply from above 32°F (0°C) to slightly negative values, but within a very short period of time, e.g. within a few hours, resulting in death or severe frostbite of uncovered blackberry plants.
THE RIGHT TIME TO MULCH BLACKBERRIES The most appropriate time is often the end of October (in the middle of the US) when it has started to freeze and you can't wait for the warmth to arrive. The most dangerous thing is if the mulching will be followed by a week or even two weeks of really high temperatures or even rain, which can lead to blackberry rooting. For annuals, this is not fatal: from the root buds, the branches rejuvenate again like a bird's "phoenix". Of course, the gardener will lose the whole season, and if he makes repeated mistakes, he will lose the second season. Here we must be guided by the indications of the weather stations, which sometimes tell us exactly when a steady cold spell is coming. And while we wait for the cold, you can treat blackberries with a 3% Bordeaux solution to rid the plants of winter stage pests and diseases.
As long as the temperature goes down below 32°F (0°C) and doesn't even rise above 32°F (0°C) during the day, blackberry mulching is very possible. As we have already said, the period for mulching blackberries is usually in late October or early November in the central part of the U.S. However, this is in the middle of the country. If you live farther south, you may not need mulch at all, or even be prohibited (shoots will be prohibited because inside, under mulch, a lot of completely unnecessary moisture accumulates, and if there is too much moisture, you can even start rotting the roots, and then the blackberries will die completely). If you live in the north, then you can start mulching a whole month earlier. Therefore, before you mulch, you need to remember some important rules.
Rule #1: Blackberries can be ruined not only by a winter with no snow at all but also by a provocative thaw where frost suddenly turns to rain. In this case, the buds will freeze to death, so try to use extra, such as dried leaves, in addition to the main shelter, which can "take the hit". Rule #2: Do not rush to cover blackberries and wait for a light but steady frost, otherwise both roots and buds will simply uproot. As we have already mentioned, if you rush to cover, a lot of water will accumulate under it; in fact, a greenhouse effect will occur, which will damage the above-ground parts of the plant and the root system. In addition, due to the excess of water, various fungi and bacteria develop very actively. In this case, the shrub will regrow in spring, only if the above-ground part dies or if the top is a bit podgy, but if the roots are affected, the site will have to be laid again. Rule #3: If you live in a western area where the thermometer doesn't go below 14°F (-10°C) in the winter, forget about mulching or use a single layer of agricultural fabric, which "breathes".
Those who have mulched their grapes will find it easier, while those who have not will find it more difficult. Blackberry branches, very carefully so as not to break, should be removed from their supports, wire, and placed on the surface of the soil that has been taken by frost, and gently pinned to them. If the bush is large, tie them together with twine before laying. To exclude the blowing of blackberries, or at least minimize it, it is necessary to cover the shoots already laid on the surface of the soil with dry leaves (or lay branches on top of them, sprinkled with leaves in advance), and afterward with a soil mulch film, something that should be fixed and not tear the wind. This can be bricks on the edge, crates, plywood, etc.
Tumblr media
THE PERFECT MULCHING MATERIAL Gardeners have debated, are debating, and will continue to debate what is the best mulching material for blackberries. Some try to mulch with film, others use agricultural fabrics exclusively, but trust me, whichever way you choose, it still has pros and cons. Take film for example: if you live in the middle of the country, that's fine, but if you're near the south, obviously the temperature changes in the winter can create condensation under the film, leading to the consequences mentioned above. If you have decided to use film, or if you don't have anything else handy, you can use a layer between the plants and the film, for example, a mulch, as in a layer of moss - with double protection: against moisture and against frost. Then there are agro textiles, a relatively new non-woven material that has perfect permeability to water and air (they "breathe"). Even during the thawing period (which occurs in autumn and winter), agro textiles show their good side: they let water pass through and allow it to evaporate.
However, if there is too much water (i.e. active snowmelt in mid-winter), it cannot cope with the evaporation of excess water and it thaws. Therefore, in areas where thawing is active, you better warn yourself and use fir wood, corn, or at least dry leaves covered with twigs or branches. If you have to choose between light and black wool, it is better to choose light wool, because black wool gets very hot in spring (if you live in the city and your blackberries are in a country house, when you go to the country house it will be cooked under black wool). It is recommended for northerners to use sintepon synthetic mulch film, but it should not be placed on the plant, but on pre-layered leaves, dry and free from all kinds of diseases. However, in warm winters with low snow, plants in northern areas may suffer under this type of mulch.
MISTAKES WHEN MULCHING BLACKBERRIES The first mistake: is not appearing under the cover of the poison of mice (believe me, they eat all the buds). The second mistake: is using sawdust as insulation for blackberries. They absorb moisture very quickly, turn into just a block of ice, and then melt very slowly. I personally found a piece of ice as late as July in a pile of sawdust. What's wrong with that? Blackberries don't warm up in the spring, they slowly wilt under the ice and rocks instead. The third mistake: is using straw for mulch. Straw actively attracts rodents, who settle in it, build "apartment buildings" and live there, eating blackberry buds and nibbling on shoots, and in spring it is not easy to remove all the semi-digested winter straw from the site.
The fourth mistake: is delaying the removal of mulch material. Remember to run to the site as soon as the snow melts and the temperature rises to remove the mulching material: a strong frost will not, but a thaw may occur. Make sure you remove the mulching material before the buds on the blackberries swell. Basically, there is nothing particularly complicated: a dozen shrubs, primitive trellis, no less primitive shelter, and the main thing - all the time and at the same time, do not forget the rodents.

Through The Snowfall
Or Read It On AO3
Pairing: Betty Cooper x Jughead Jones
Summary: The Coopers and Andrews have rented the same cabin in the woods every holiday season since their kids were two years old.
And with Archie and Betty leaving for college in just a few months, Betty is determined to make this Christmas a memorable one…by telling Archie how she really feels.
What she doesn’t plan for is Archie bringing his best friend.
Or the way her gaze is suddenly lingering on the wild dark curls peeking out from beneath a crown beanie rather than the ginger spikes she’d set her sights on so long ago.
Chapter One: Moonlight
She wrings her hands together in front of her body as she takes a shallow breath and straightens her shoulders.
“Archie,” she begins softly, tugging her bottom lip between her teeth nervously before releasing it to continue. “I like you. Like really like you. I have for a long time now.”
Her reflection stares back at her blankly and if that’s any indication as to how this confession is going to go she’d rather shove her hand in a garbage disposal.
Shaking her head, Betty turns on the faucet and splashes the cool water on her heated cheeks in an effort to relax. When that’s not enough, she turns to the clawfoot bathtub behind her and begins running the water, tossing in a lavender rose bath bomb. There are dried petals laced throughout and watching them rise to the top of the now swirling purple water begins to calm her nerves.
She can do this.
She’s spent two weeks of every winter holiday break with Archie Andrews for the past fifteen years, since they were both running about this very same cabin in their diapers and ugly toddler-sized Christmas sweaters.
Though they had never been able to spend more time together than that, they’d grown closer every winter and a few years ago they’d declared themselves the best of friends. This had lead to the occasional impromptu FaceTime conversation, encouraging texts before her school paper article releases and his important football games, and even a phone call before bed if either of them were feeling especially anxious.
Her family had moved to Connecticut, away from their hometown of Riverdale, when she was two years old due to her father’s new job. Archie and his family had remained in Riverdale, which had only broken her mother, Alice, and Archie’s mother, Mary’s, hearts. They’d quickly decided they couldn’t bear not to come up with an annual reason for the families to spend an extended amount of time together and after several glasses of wine and much research, the ladies had decided on a yearly holiday trip to a little upscale town outside of Whistler, Canada.
She peels off her pajamas and undergarments as soon as the water fills the tub and the hot water is exactly what she needs to quiet her overactive mind. She tilts her head back against the tub rim and runs her fingers absentmindedly through the colorful bubbles atop the water.
The chime of her cell phone interrupts her efforts and she glances at the device resting on the small side table near the tub.
Reaching out to see who the message is from, a small smile forms on her lips when she recognizes the name.
V: Is three full suitcases too many for this winter wonderland vacation? Be honest.
Betty rolls her eyes and chuckles to herself as she imagines her - and she means this in the kindest of ways - high maintenance best friend dragging all of these suitcases up their snowed in cabin driveway.
B: I’d strongly advise cutting back to two.
V: Please tell me you’re joking.
B: Are you packing with Cher? Only she could convince you to pack that much for a two week trip
V: Fine. Cutting back to two and a carry on!
Betty smiles and closes her eyes once more, about to set her phone back on the nightstand when the sound of her phone pings once more.
Cher: @ me next time, Betty Dearest.
B: 😘
Betty grins at the fact that her best friends are currently together and turns the sound off of her phone in an effort to focus on the relaxation she’d drawn this bath for in the first place.
The steam from the tub has been rising against her face and she welcomes the warmth and the invigorated way it makes her skin feel. She’s wondering whether she should apply a deep clean clay face mask - one can never look too refreshed and moisturized when professing their longtime feelings for their even longertime friend - when she spots her phone lighting up out of the corner of her eye.
Groaning, she’s about to flip it over until her heart begins to thump erratically.
Archie: packing to see u tomorrow
B: Shouldn’t you already be packed? I thought your plane was leaving around noon!
Archie: it is! considered packing in the morn but gotta get in that last work out u know
Betty smiles to herself, knowing she hasn’t seen him in an entire year and she’s sure football has been working wonders on his already impressive body. Although, she’s never been that interested in overly muscular guys…but this is Archie. It’s different. Right? She brushes the thought away as she runs her tongue along her bottom lip and decides whether she should take a little risk with this next text.
B: I’m excited to see you tomorrow :)
Archie: same. see u then ;)
She tries not to overanalyze the winky face emoji as she sinks further into her now lukewarm bath.

Veronica arrives promptly at 3:00PM and Betty rushes out the front door the moment she sees Veronica’s private driver pull into the driveway. She looks like a picturesque beauty snow queen as she steps from the car in a lovely periwinkle snow jacket and matching beret, but the second she sees Betty, she squeals excitedly.
They throw their arms around each other in a tight hug as though they hadn’t just seen each other at school a few days ago. Veronica had agreed to come with Betty on vacation this year as soon as Betty had asked and she knows it’s because Veronica’s home life is currently a parental war zone.
She also knows she’ll have to ask more about that later.
“Oh, Betty! This cabin is absolutely gorgeous! I can already feel how cozy it is from here,” she says approvingly as she waves for her driver to follow behind her with her bags.
Betty wonders if she should help him, but he seems to have an understanding with Veronica and follows suit.
“It’s so wonderful! Mom has the fire going and wait until you see our bathroom,” Betty gushes as Veronica loops her arm through hers. “We even have a clawfoot bathtub!”
They make their way inside and Veronica tips her driver an amount of money in cash that Betty’s only seen a couple of times in her entire life. Alice rushes over to squeeze Veronica tightly while berating her for not wearing a heavier jacket with these freezing temperatures.
Hal brings her into a quick hug and lets her know that he’s got a pot roast cooking in the crockpot for dinner, if she’s interested.
Betty’s laying on her stomach across Veronica’s bed in their large shared room on the second floor of the cabin, her ankles crossed as she swings her feet gently back and forth. Veronica is unpacking and chattering on about the latest drama with her parents before she shakes her head.
“Okay, enough of that! When is the infamous Archie Andrews coming?”
Betty’s cheeks warm as she rests her head against a pillow and looks up at her best friend. “Around 8:00PM, I think? That’s when we’re expecting them anyways.”
“I’m so excited to meet the boy you haven’t stopped gushing about since you fell for him three years ago,” Veronica says, giving her a teasing smile. “He better be everything you’ve amped him up to be.”
“No pressure,” Betty groans, tugging the pillow from beneath her and smacking her friend with it. Veronica laughs and tosses a pair of rolled up pantyhose at Betty’s head.
“Do you think you’ll tell him tonight?”
“Of course. The earlier I tell him the more time we get to spend together,” Betty replies happily before grimacing. “Or the longer amount of time I have to face rejection.”
“He won’t reject you.” Veronica arches an eyebrow dramatically and purses her lips as she says, “unless he’s a complete idiot.”
Betty laughs just as Alice waltzes into their bedroom and she fights the urge to ask her mother if she has any idea knocking exists.
“Elizabeth, darling, have you told Veronica about the Snowflake Soirée?”
“Not yet, Mother.”
“Oh, do tell, Mrs. Cooper!” Veronica sits down next to Betty, crosses her legs, and smiles up at Alice, clearly excited about the prospect of an event.
“Every Christmas Eve, everyone in this little town dresses to the nines and heads down the road for an upscale evening party. There’s dinner, decorations, dancing, champagne!” Alice is currently opening her drawers and refolding the sweaters Betty already folded yesterday and she curls her fingers into fists to keep from snapping.
“That sounds absolutely wonderful! B, you could go with Archie!” Veronica claps her hands excitedly as Betty’s eyes widen in her direction, attempting to send an ohmygod, not in front of my mom, V! message.
Alice finishes with the last of Betty’s sweaters before flashing Veronica a bright smile of approval. “That is a great idea, Veronica. Elizabeth, be sure to straighten your shoulders when the Andrews arrive, slouching makes you look lazy and indifferent.”
She plants a kiss atop Betty’s head before waltzing out of their bedroom door and Betty’s nails are now threatening to pierce the skin of her palms.
“She makes my mother look like a nominee for Mommy of the Year,” Veronica scoffs, making Betty chuckle as Veronica reaches over to clasp her hands in hers, somewhat effectively releasing the tension in her fingers.
“Do you want to FaceTime Cher?” she asks in an attempt to distract Betty from her mother’s whirlwind appearance. “She and Toni are dying to see the cabin and you know they’ve been snowed in at Thistle House for the past two days.”
FaceTiming Cheryl and her girlfriend, Toni, lightens Betty’s mood until she forgets about her mother’s controlling ways and can only think about the impending arrival of the Andrews.
__________________
Betty and Veronica are sitting on the loveseat admiring the cabin’s over-the-top holiday decorations and sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows from festive mugs when the Andrews pull into the driveway in their rental Jeep.
Betty pulls at her black tights anxiously as her father swings open the front door.
“Fred! It’s been far too long, my friend!” The men embrace as Betty and Veronica stand and Betty finds herself smiling. Fred Andrews has always been nothing but kind to her and today is no different. He greets her with a bear hug before turning to hug Veronica, a girl he’s never even met.
“How are you, Betty?” he asks and she knows the question is genuine.
“Im good, Mr. Andrews! Excited for these next couple of weeks off.”
“I already told Mary I’ll be sleeping until 11:00AM everyday,” he says with a look of defiance and the girls can’t help but giggle as Mary comes bustling into the house with a few containers of home baked Christmas cookies.
“And I’ve already told him he will absolutely not be doing that,” Mary says loudly, making Fred huff teasingly before heading back out to bring in their bags. Mary hugs Betty and introduces herself to Veronica before adding, “honestly, he couldn’t sleep that late if he tried.”
Betty’s trying to focus on what Archie’s parents are saying, but her eyes dart to the front door at any sign of movement and she tucks a few loose strands of hair behind her ear nervously.
“I see him!” Veronica whispers excitedly, standing on her tiptoes to see through the branches of the elaborate and large Christmas tree Alice and Hal had been working on all morning.
Archie barrels through the door, not a moment later, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder and a wide smile on his face. Betty’s heartbeat quickens and her face breaks into a wide grin at the sight of him.
But he looks...different.
His muscles are large and defined now from his football training and instead of the cropped haircut she’s used to, his hair is coiffed to perfection. He spots her out of the corner of his eye and his entire face lights up.
“Betty!” He makes his way over and quickly wraps her in a huge hug, his arms and body enveloping her petite frame. She giggles into his chest, happy that, at the very least, he smells familiar. Like a dash of men’s cologne and spearmint. “Still rockin that ponytail?”
He releases her and she rolls her eyes, shoving him playfully. “Archie, this is my best friend, Veronica Lodge.”
She’s now hyper-aware of her ponytail swinging gently behind her, brushing her shoulders. Does he not like the ponytail? Should she wear her hair down more often? But the ponytail is her signature look…
Her thoughts are interrupted as an unfamiliar feeling of dread settles in the pit of her stomach. Veronica has stepped forward, slipping her hand in his in a formal greeting that Archie seems all too eager to take part in.
“Veronica? Betty’s told me a lot about you.”
“Oh, I’m sure she has,” Veronica answers easily, tilting her head and smiling that 100 watt Lodge smile. He smiles back, but there’s a curiosity behind his eyes that makes Betty’s fingers close into fists once again.
It’s not that she hadn’t thought about this predicament occurring when she’d invited Veronica, but she had convinced herself that Archie’s wandering eye only applied when she wasn’t in the room. Standing right next to him.
“Shit.”
There’s a commotion near the front door and Betty immediately turns around to find another guy their age attempting to pull what looks to be the Andrews’ small wagon overfilled with gifts through the front door.
“Oh, son, I should’ve helped you with that!” Fred and Hal immediately move to where the guy has managed to get it halfway through the front door.
Archie is laughing as he watches the scene unfold, his eyes glittering in amusement. “Oh, Betty, you remember me telling you I was bringing Jughead, right?”
Betty’s eyebrows furrow because she absolutely does not remember this. She does remember that Jughead is Archie’s best friend from home, but she’s never actually met or seen the guy.
“Jughead, come meet the girls!”
Jughead drops his own duffel bag near the front door, shaking hands with Hal and Fred before he turns around and shakes his head in fake irritation at his best friend’s lack of assistance with the wagon.
Betty’s mouth parts.
She’d always assumed that a boy named “Jughead” could only be some weird Jeffrey Dahmer-esque kid covered in dirt who curses loudly and demands extra meat with every meal.
But Jughead is nothing like what she had spent the last few years imagining whenever Archie spoke of him.
He’s handsome.
Tall and lean with a smile that tugs on the corners of his mouth as though his happiness is a secret only a few are privileged to know. A worn gray beanie in what looks like a misshapen crown rests atop his head in an attempt to tame the wild dark waves peeking from beneath it and falling just above his eyes.
“Hey, you must be Betty Cooper,” he says as he closes the space between them, tugging his snow-dusted gloves off and shoving them into the pockets of his flannel jacket before offering his hand to shake. “My sole competition for Archie’s friendship.”
Veronica nudges her and she finally blinks, registering the introduction. She slides her hand into his and, despite the fact that he’d just had gloves on, is surprised to find that his hand is warm and soft. She smiles at him and shakes her head causing her ponytail to swing gently once again.
“That’s sweet that you think you’re any competition at all.”
He chuckles good-naturedly, his free hand moving to tug at one of the points on his crown beanie and her heart suddenly feels warm. She’d made him laugh.
“I guess we’ll have to let Archie decide.”
“Then I guess we’ll never know.”
“Touché.” His playful smile widens at their shared knowledge of Archie’s indecisiveness being an obvious character trait.
After another few seconds her gaze follows his to where their hands are still currently interlocked in what could now be debatably referred to as the longest first meeting handshake of all time.
His grip is warm but lax, as though he’s waiting for her to make the move to break the contact and she feels her cheeks burn.
She immediately drops his hand and turns to Archie and Veronica, who are now both watching them with curious expressions.
“This is my best friend, Veronica Lodge.” Betty introduces them and quickly moves next to Archie in order to put some space between herself and his best friend.
“Is that Alice’s famous hot chocolate?” Archie asks suddenly and Alice confirms from across the room that it is and that both of the boys should come grab a mug.
They make their way over to the kitchen and Betty swallows audibly, touching the ends of her ponytail that fall against her shoulder. She’s watching Archie talk animatedly as he adds marshmallows to his mug, his arms flexing in his long-sleeved Under Armour shirt even from the small movement.
But then her gaze shifts to where Jughead has shrugged out of his large flannel jacket, nodding along with whatever Archie’s saying as he grabs one of the cookies from Mary’s tupperware.
“He is good looking,” Veronica observes next to her and it takes a moment for Betty to realize who she’s talking about.
Archie.
“Yeah, he is,” she confirms, turning back to the small table where they’d left their own mugs of hot chocolate resting.
“So...are you still planning to profess your love for him tonight?”
Laughter from the kitchen fills the air and Betty immediately looks in the direction of the sound, the tips of her ears burning. Jughead.
“Um...no,” she decides suddenly, ignoring the look of confusion crossing Veronica’s face. “Maybe not tonight.”

Creepy Window
Tumblr media
You know how when you live with someone you develop these sort of household jokes? The kind of stuff that wouldn’t really be funny to anyone else because they simply weren’t there and the premise doesn’t really hold up when you try to explain it? Growing up “creepy window” was the inside joke that my father and I shared.
My childhood home was a bit odd in design. It wasn’t very big but there were two stories and a basement – plenty enough room for just my father and I. The top story was fairly normal, two bedrooms a couple linen closets and a bathroom. The floor plan downstairs however was incredibly open. This meant that unless you were in the little half-bath or we had the library closed off (something we only ever did in the winter) you could essentially see into any room from any other room. More importantly to the story, you could see the dining room windows on the north-facing wall from virtually anywhere on the first floor.
There were three windows on that wall. They were large but also high up which let a lot of natural light into the home without sacrificing privacy in that area, something that I’m sure was intentional with the design. The windows were all identical, which I guess is what made the situation so funny. We were sitting on the couch in the living room getting a movie set up when my dad said “hey, look out creepy window.” We had never discussed the window before, but when he said that I knew right where to look; the dining room window on the far left.
It wasn’t that the window itself was creepy; it looked exactly like the other two after all. I had never really associated that word with it until Dad said something, but I had on a subconscious level realized that something about the window was off. It caught the light in such a way that was different than any of the other windows. This was especially noticeable at sunrise and sunset; the sky would appear to be two radically different colors from that window than from the two beside it.
That day when we first talked about it, for example, the sky was a shade of deep blue when viewed from all of the windows except that one, from which it appeared to be almost lilac. We had been staying in the house for about a year at this point and this wasn’t the first instance of something like that happening. I was only twelve and I guess I just hadn’t thought about why that window always seemed so strange until someone else pointed it out.
What my dad found amusing more than the pink tint out of that one spot, was the fact that both of us had apparently at separate times noticed the bizarre, almost unnatural quality that the coloring had right there. He used the phrase “creepy window” expecting to puzzle me but instead, I had immediately been drawn to the place he’d been referring to. Thus the joke of creepy window was born.
When we were done laughing about it he did the parent thing and took the teaching opportunity to explain to me about how the angle of light can affect our perception of color. I eagerly accepted the explanation for something that had been lightly nagging at the back of my mind for awhile by then. My curiosity was, for the time being, satiated and life went about as normal.
From that point we would often crack jokes about the window, pointing it out when we noticed a substantial difference in the light and making up crazy alternative explanations. These theories ranged from alien technology to radiation effects, to the supernatural and covered just about everything between. When we had guests sometimes one of us would casually bring up creepy window, leaving the other to explain the situation as best we could. One thing that other people seemed to have in common was that they found creepy window to be more “creepy” than “funny” or amusing like my father and I did. I guess in the time we had spent living there we had just gotten used to it, to the point where it no longer seemed so abnormal.
Gradually, over the years, I began to suspect that there might actually be something wrong, or dare I say, creepy, about creepy window. I started noticing things aside from the lighting that just didn’t quite line up with reality as I knew it.
The first thing was that I never saw animals outside of creepy window. I first noticed this one day while looking for my cat. He had snuck out through the fence to sunbathe on my neighbors back porch, something he did often. That was one of the first things that I checked, only I couldn’t see him through the window. I went outside and sure enough, there he was right in the middle of the porch. I figured he had just gotten there which is why I hadn’t seen him, but after I wrangled him back inside I started to think about it. As far as I could remember I had never seen him or any other pets through that window. No birds or squirrels or anything either. Since cats, birds and squirrels aren’t creatures that are well-known for posing, I had no real way to validate this, but as time wore on I continued to not see animals through the window.
With my interest in the situation renewed, I began to actively check the view from out of creepy window on a regular basis. It wasn’t exactly an obsession, but it did become part of my daily routine. A few months passed without me witnessing anything exceptional, and I had begun to relax some. Then it rained.
It was late fall in Ohio, so it’s not like it was a rainy season or anything, but neither was it unheard of. I was in the dining room doing my homework when I glanced up. There was no sign of rainfall outside creepy window. I stood up and walked around some, trying to get a better view or find an angle to look at that gave me better visibility, but no matter where I stood I couldn’t see the rain. It was falling fast in big drops and that was a fact that I could easily confirm by looking out any other window in the house. I spent the better part of an hour that night fixated on the situation, but I could find no explanation.
Of course, that was the same night where Dad had to work late, and by the time I saw him the next morning at breakfast the rain had stopped and I had nothing to show him. I held my tongue, but waited for another storm. A few weeks later the skies were cloudy and overcast and sure enough, when it began sprinkling, there was still no sign of water outside creepy window. I pointed it out, trying to sound casual.
Dad laughed it off. “That’s creepy window for you,” was all he said. The situation had already become too much of a joke to concern him, I realized. I did my best to let it go. I thought that if my father wasn’t worried about the totally random views from that window that I didn’t need to be worried about them either. If I had learned anything from my years living in that house and looking out that window, it was that it doesn’t take a lot for our perception of something to become wildly skewed.
I actually ended up doing a science project on the whole thing for school one year. I obviously omitted the term “creepy window” to get it approved by my teacher and keep my classmates from mocking me. I can vaguely recall titling the paper something obnoxiously long in the hopes that my teacher would find it more sophisticated. I thought that was exceedingly clever, but my peers found it pretentious and in retrospect, I don’t blame them.
I don’t remember the paper very well but I do remember the rest of the project. I kept a “Light Refraction Log” to document the way that light can affect color. I got a few disposable cameras and every day for two weeks I would wait until sunset and take three pictures of my dining room windows. One would should the world from outside the middle window, one would should the light from creepy window, and one would show all three windows together to prove that the first two were taken at the same time. I didn’t want to risk failing the project because my teacher thought I playing an elaborate prank.
I didn’t include it in my paper, but I began to notice a pattern in the photos that made me believe the view might not be as random as I had thought. The sky color from the pictures taken through creepy window one day would almost perfectly match the sky color from the pictures taken from the normal windows the day after. It was almost like there was a 24 hour preview into the next day. If my teacher noticed it she didn’t say anything and I felt no need to point it out.
The idea that the window was somehow showing me the future seemed absolutely ridiculous to me, even with as young as I was and the amount of evidence I had leading me to that conclusion. I went back and forth about what to do with the information. Part of me desperately wanted to tell my dad in the hopes that he would have a more rational explanation for me – like he had the night when we had first discussed creepy window.  I was afraid though, in case he didn’t take my concerns – or me – seriously. What scared me even more than that was the idea that he would take it seriously and I’d find out that something really was wrong.
I started keeping a closer eye on the window. There were days when I’d see moisture on the glass and I’d feel my entire body go cold. The next day it would never fail to rain, which would always leave me with a sense of dread. It was days like that, when I had been able to accurately predict the weather, that I almost broke my silence on the subject, but I never did. Creepy window was just some dumb, inside joke.  I felt like it would be safer if it just stayed that way.
You’d never believe just how easy it is for adults to forget things that seemed important to them as children. Creepy window was something that alternated between the coolest thing ever and utterly terrifying, but it was something that was always relevant to me growing up. It seemed life changing, like the kind of thing I’d never be free from. Then I grew up. I moved out, went to college, got a job and an apartment and just like that, creepy window ceased to matter. On the rare occasions I thought about it, it was just a fading memory of an inside joke that I had let myself get spooked by in my earlier teenage years. My dad and I had other things to talk about when he’d call and eventually I didn’t think about it at all.
Yesterday I came back to town to visit him, however. I dragged my bags up to my old room and got settled in. I spent some time reminiscing before I came down to let him know I was ready to head out for dinner. Near the bottom of the stairs I glanced up and saw out creepy window for the first time in years. Memories of the thing and my ongoing suspicions about it hit me hard and it was all I could do not to scream as I looked out into the red, fiery oblivion that was waiting for me just beyond the glass.

CSA WEEK 14
P I C K L I S T
RASPBERRIES!!! - WATERMELON - GREEN KALE - LEMONGRASS - ASIAN EGGPLANT - THAI BASIL - SWEET CARMEN PEPPERS - SHISHITO PEPPERS - DANGJO CHEONG YANG HOT PEP - CARROTS - ONION - GARLIC
Pooh Sprague (original farmer at Edgewater with wife and fastest bean picker Anne) infrequently updates a blog on our website -Pooh’s Corner- that offers his seasonal farming perspective etc… he posted this on Tuesday (September 14th), just in time for the CSA newsletter, thought yall might like checking in on Pooh’s thoughts…
 PRO-TIPS:
Shishitooooosssss!!  You know what to do, but if you have forgotten: bring these peps right to your pan or grill, shmear in olive oil and fry or grill until popped and blistered.  Salt and Devour immediately
FOR NOTES ON LEMONGRASS AND HOW TO USE:
Scroll back to week 10 and read up on all things lemongrass.
BUT FOR MY FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH LEMONGRASS, SEE:
TOM KHA SOUP (Thai coconut chicken soup with chicken, mushroom and coconut milk)
8 oz. (226 g) boneless and skinless chicken, breast or thighs, cut into strips or thin pieces
20 canned straw mushrooms
1 1/2 cups coconut milk
1 cup water
1 stalk lemongrass, cut into 3-inch lengths and pounded
6 kaffir lime leaves , lightly bruised to release the flavor
6 slices galangal
8 bird's eye chilies, lightly pounded
3 tablespoons fish sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons lime juice or to taste
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
Add water, lemongrass, galangal, chilies, kaffir lime leaves into a pot and bring it to boil. Add straw mushrooms and chicken and boil it on medium heat for a few minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Add coconut milk and boil for a couple more minutes. Turn off the heat and add lime juice and fish sauce to taste. Add chopped cilantro before serving.
If you can't find galangal, do not use ginger. Ginger is not the substitute for galangal. "Tom Kha" means galangal in Thai. However, if you absolutely can't find galangal and still wish to make this because you love this soup so much, just make it without galangal.

Spicy eggplant from the burma superstar cook book
Curry style eggplant awesome over rice.
3 Japanese Eggplants, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 6 cups)
1 teaspoon salt
2 ½ tablespoons canola oil
2 cups finely diced yellow onion
3 tablespoons minced garlic
1 tablespoon minced ginger
1-2 Thai chiles, thinly sliced or 2 tablespoons minced jalapeno
1 small dried chile, broken in half, seeds retained
2 teaspoons shrimp paste
½ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon fish sauce
Handful of fried garlic chips (for how to on garlic chips: again head to our CSA BLOG and scroll back to CSA week 6)
Cilantro or thai basil sprigs for garnish
1 lime or lemon cut into wedges for garnish
Season the eggplant with salt and scatter onto a clean dish towel.  Let it sit while you prepare the remaining ingredients, at least 10 minutes.  Once the eggplant begins to bead with water, wrap the towel lightly and squeeze to remove excess liquid from the eggplant.
In a wok or pot, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium-high heat.  Add the eggplant, lower the heat to medium, and cook, stirring often, until the eggplant begins to soften, about 4 minutes.  Using a slotted spoon, scoop out the eggplant and transfer to a plate.
Heat the remaining 1 ½ tablespoons of oil in the wok.  Add the onions and cook over medium-low heat, stirring often to prevent scorching, until softened, about 4 minutes.  Stir in the garlic, ginger, fresh and fried chiles, and shrimp paste and cook until the onions are completely soft and starting to turn golden, 3 more minutes.
Add the turmeric and paprika and then stir in the eggplant and about ½ cup of water.  Lower to a gentle simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggplant is very soft and most of the water has evaporated, about 5 minutes.  Season with fish sauce, adding more for a saltier flavor, and squeeze a wedge or two of lime over the top.  Serve in a bowl and top with cilantro (and or thai basil!).  Offer extra lime wedges along side.
The 7th Inning Stretch September 14, 2021:   We are approaching mid September here. School is back in session and as if that weren’t a wake-up call, we are staring down the ultimate harbinger of fall with the arrival of the World’s Fair in Tunbridge, VT. Surely the days will start getting much shorter now, and we often remark about it. We will see the breaking out of sweatshirts, neoprene picking gloves, rain gear and wool toques. In their orange rain pants the crew looks like they just came off the boat from the TV series “Deadliest Catch.” As the season winds down, many farmers are licking their seasonal wounds. We are -in farmer terms- “just past the 7th inning stretch” in our seasons, and there is still much to accomplish. This includes a lot of planting and seeding within the greenhouses to serve the late fall CSA. Our onions are gathered up, the first of three plantings of carrots up and in the cooler, and if Mike can find enough parts between our two old potato harvesters to make one functional harvester, we will soon be digging our 6 acres of potatoes. Once that crop is all graded, sized and stored in our barn, we can start washing and shipping them. We can then turn our attention to: cleaning up the place; planting next year’s garlic; readying the strawberries with sprays and mulching for next spring; fixing broken doors and sills in our funky collection of old greenhouses. Then the contracts will expire on the Jamaican crew, and they will head home to tend their own farms by early November. Plenty to do, and seemingly insufficient time and bodies to make it through the list. I have heard the muttering of “I wouldn’t mind a good frost now….” and this time it didn’t come from my lips first. On many farms, the wet July here in the Twin States brought forth an epic surge of weed germination and growth…and Edgewater was no exception. We daily watched the galinsoga engulf the strawberries, with no spare hours available to get in there and clean it out. We are looking for a good frost to freeze it down, leaving the strawberries to bask in the filtering fall sunlight without competition. Fortunately, the strawberry plants are in very good shape, and we are (perhaps foolishly) getting optimistic about our spring prospects. But everyone is busy harvesting and packing out 10 hours a day, and soon the light levels will dictate just how long we will be able to work in the fields. Despite a crop failure with pumpkins and winter squash, we have an almost epic fall raspberries crop. Trying to harvest and move that crop is mopping up a lot of extra hours. In the farmstand we have had to close down on Mondays for the rest of the season, because of a labor shortage, and we have had to reschedule the help we have. Labor shortage or not, our melons, tomatoes, pepper, cut flowers, leeks will be out there for another 4 weeks unless a frost stops them in their steps. Weather continues to be the biggest challenge and unknown for farmers, along with a dearth of local labor. Our season started hot and droughty from the end of March until the end of June. It was abnormally hot for so early in the growing season, and that created some minor problems in the greenhouses, but there was a non-stop 10-15 mph breeze or wind that just never abated. I felt like we were trying to farm in Pueblo, Colorado. The lack of rain was tough enough, but the constant wind withered and devastated transplanted crops. Then, the weather changed, and in 20 minutes we got an inch of rain, and it then continued to rain off and on for a month. A lot of disease showed up, so we were confronted with trading one extreme problem for another. However, August turned up benignly normal, and with adequate moisture the potatoes sized up and the field tomatoes and melons kicked into gear. We have been challenged, but thus far undamaged, by hurricanes. Many of my seacoast friends prepared for the worst wind event they hoped never to see. Weather models were in constant flux for us here in the Upper Valley. On the Saturday that Hurricane Ida was making landfall on Long Island, the forecast for us from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was calling for a range of 2-12” of rain. I understand that weather forecasting is not an exact science, but for me there is a big difference in the amount that 2” dumps and what 12 “ would look like. At two inches I would get the tractor bucket out after the storm passes, and do a little touch-up work on our gravel roads and driveways. After twelve inches in so few hours I would be knee-deep in insurance claims, as well as sleeping and cooking meals in our farmstand….for a long time, too. What did we really get in the end? In what was forecast to be the middle of the storm, I went out and mowed my lawn. And I could not have been happier to be doing so. Fall will always be a great season to me. There is plenty of natural color in the pumpkins, ornamental corn, and chrysanthemums as well as on the trees in the woods. The warmth in this season is welcome, as opposed to the intense sun and heat of summer. Fall crops roll into the pack house: beets, potatoes, turnip, carrots. Onions, garlic, leeks and cabbage. When it's cold, we can add a couple of thin layers of clothes to keep warm until the sun burns through the fall fogs and warms us. Migratory birds come and go, and soon we will start to lure the songbirds to the birdfeeders. In deep fall, the woodstove starts to operate with greater frequency. Then one day in November, it (the woodstove) will start its full time nonstop operation until late April, when the sun once more strengthens its grip on us all.

How to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading: remove these pesky plants from your garden borders
Flowerbeds full of dandelions? Paths covered in chickweed? Our tips on how to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading will come in handy if these pesky intruders are driving you round the bend.
There are all manner of weeds lurking in our gardens and sowing seed wherever they get the chance. The general consensus is that they’re a pain – especially when they’re encroaching on our prized flowers or vegetables and sapping the nutrients from the soil. In the case of some (Japanese knotweed, poison ivy, stinging nettles – we’re looking at you) they can also do more harm than simply spoiling the look of a border. Everyone knows about the nasty allergic reactions that occur from a run-in with nettles or poison ivy, whilst knotweed can tear through structural foundations at breakneck speed. Naturally, none are ideal.
You're reading: How to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading: remove these pesky plants from your garden borders
Luckily, there are a good few methods to zap these plants from our plots and restore order. And, most approaches don’t require reaching for the bottle of chemicals, either. We’ve rounded up lots of tips on how to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading below. Your plot will be free of them before you know it.
How to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading: 12 easy tips
1. Dig them up by the roots
Want to know how to get rid of weeds the traditional way? A weed puller, like this one from Fiskars, will make the job easier
True, it’s a little old fashioned, but it’s certainly stood the test of time. Digging up weeds is one of those trusty, all-natural methods that, when done properly, works wonders. Use a garden fork or a hand trowel, and gently lever them out of the soil, aiming to remove all of the root system to prevent rapid regrowth.
This is ideal if you only have one or two weeds in your garden, but if you have a lawn full of them, you might want to invest in a weed pulling tool. These enable you to insert the claw around the weed, then step on it, before effortlessly pulling the intruder out of the ground. Look for ergonomically designed styles that let you work from an upright position.
Some weeds require extra care with this method, as new plants can grow even from the tiniest fragments of their roots or rhizomes (couch grass, for example). Japanese knotweed is another one to watch out for – but removing it by hand generally isn’t an aggressive enough measure anyway. If you’re dealing with this difficult plant, our Japanese knotweed guide has more advice.
2. Keep on top of mulching
Mulching is a simple way to battle the weeds, and will add nutrients to your garden soil, too
Mulching is one of the easiest ways to suppress weeds as it is simply added on top of the soil.
Biodegradable mulches, such as garden compost, wood chippings, processed bark, leafmould, straw, seaweed and rotted manure all suppress weeds while also releasing essential nutrients back into the soil, helping your plants to flourish – a win-win. However, since it breaks down over time it will need to be replaced every few years.
Our ultimate guide to mulching has more tips.
3. Mow them down
Frequent mowing will weaken lawn weeds
(Image credit: Cheryl Fleishman/Alamy Stock Photo)
Battling with a weedy lawn? Frequent mowing is a good way to deter them. It weakens the plants and stops them from setting seed, which can eventually get rid of them altogether.
Just make sure you attach a basket to your mower, rather than leaving the clippings on the grass. The latter can spread the seeds around, escalating the problem. Once your lawn is weed-free, you can remove the basket and leave the clippings on the ground, which will act as a natural fertilizer.
If you need an update this season, take a look at our best lawn mower buying guide. And, for more advice, our tips on how to get rid of lawn weeds will come in handy.
4. Cover in boiling water
Boiling water is a useful (and cheap) trick for removing weeds from paving
Looking for a simple solution on how to get rid of weeds? Pouring boiling water on the base of the plants causes instant shock and will not only kill the weed but also any seeds that may be dormant in the soil.
It’s a brilliant solution for walkways, garden path ideas, and driveways, as the weeds will die within a couple of days. However, it is not recommended for use on lawns or in borders with other plants as it can cause fatal damage to these too.
5. Make a homemade weed killer with baking soda
Looking for more budget-friendly ways to eradicate weeds? Try this trick, with something that you probably already have in your cupboards.
Since baking soda is a powder, you’ll need to wet the plant in order to make the powder stick. Then, sprinkle one teaspoon of baking soda over the weed’s leaves and let it work its magic. This is a great method if you want to target specific weeds that have popped up amongst flowers or plants that you don’t want to harm. Reapply in four to six weeks if the weeds have not disappeared.
If you’re looking for ways to prevent weeds from cropping up in your paving ideas, then sprinkling baking soda in the cracks can stop the weeds from appearing in the first place. Repeat every couple of weeks.
If you like this tip, you might like our cheap garden ideas, too.
6. Line your flowerbeds to stop weeds appearing
Try weed-suppressing liners for your raised beds
The easiest way to deal with weeds is to prevent them from cropping up in the first place. Lining your patio ideas, driveways or paths with a weedproof membrane before adding gravel, slate, bark chippings, or similar will help to keep them at bay.
For your raised garden bed ideas, garden centers and DIY stores often sell specific lining sheets (it is sometimes called landscape fabric), which will also retain moisture and reduce the need for watering. Alternatively, if you have old carpet tiles or a shower curtain these are a great DIY solution and are a good way to recycle unwanted household items.
7. Use vinegar to kill weeds
The active ingredient in vinegar, acetic acid, is also very effective at destroying weeds. Your standard brown fish-and-chips vinegar will go a decent way to helping with your problem. Simply pour into a spray bottle and spritz onto the desired plants.
If you want something that packs a bit more punch, there are also horticultural vinegars, which usually have a higher concentration of acetic acid and as a result are more effective. However, they also require handling with greater care as they are corrosive and can burn the skin, damage eyes and erode the surface of your tools.
Read more: How Oscillating Sprinklers Work
With either types, it’s important to be careful not to spray the plants that are meant to be there. Vinegar is non-selective and will destroy any vegetation in its path, including your prized blooms.
8. Try an eco-friendly heat gun
Environmentally friendly, very precise, and a lot more exciting than pulling weeds by hand – a weed burner works by surrounding the weed with an extremely high temperature (between 80°C and 600°C) which destroys its leaves.
This prevents it from photosynthesizing and subsequently kills the weed. However, the roots remain intact, so multiple treatments may be required.
9. Dispose of them properly
Once you’ve learnt how to get rid of weeds, don’t be tempted to throw them on the compost
Whichever method you use to get rid of weeds, it’s crucial that you dispose of them properly. Collect them all in a work cart, small wheelbarrow or strong garden tub to make it easier to transport them for disposal, suggests the team at B&Q. Don’t add them to your compost, they add. Instead, throw them out with your other green or general waste.
If you love a bonfire, you’ll be pleased to know that most weeds can be added to the heap. However, some weeds are dangerous to burn, such as poison ivy. When set alight, it releases its toxic oil into the air. If breathed in, it can cause significant harm (which will require immediate medical attention). Find out more advice in our guide on how to get rid of poison ivy.
It’s also worth knowing that Japanese knotweed is classed as ‘controlled waste’ in many regions. This means it can’t simply go out with the usual trash, or be dumped in the local tip (unless yours has the right environmental permit). In the UK, it’s also illegal to dispose of it in the wild. Professionals can be hired to take it away.
10. As a last resort, use a herbicide
Need to know how to get rid of weeds, fast? Herbicides are effective, however they’re not suitable for organic gardens
Chemical herbicides are no good for wildlife garden ideas, and are certainly out if you’re following an organic gardening approach. But, if you’ve tried absolutely everything else and are on the verge of giving up, then they can be an effective last resort.
You have two options. One is a targeted formula, usually a gel, that you apply to the leaves to destroy the weed from the top down. This is ideal if you only have a few weeds, or if you don’t want to put any of your other plants at risk. Alternatively, if your problem is more widespread, then opt for a solution that is sprayed or watered onto the plant.
Read the packet very carefully, and follow the application instructions whilst using all safety precautions necessary, such as wearing protective clothing. Also, be careful when selecting your herbicide of choice. Some are selective (so will only affect certain types of weed), whilst others will destroy anything which crosses their path – so are no good for spraying over your flowerbeds. It’s also a good idea to dedicate one specific watering can or sprayer for weed killer – and use it for nothing else.
Take a look at our best weed killer buying guide for our favorite picks.
11. Tackle weeds fast
Once you know how to get rid of weeds, tackling them as soon as they appear will make things much easier in the long run
Whenever you see a small weed popping up be sure to get rid of it quickly. What’s small this week will soon be elbowing your other plants out of the way.
Be vigilant and do a regular ‘sweep’ of the garden, looking out in particular for invasive weeds such as nettles and dandelions. Once this type of weed takes hold they’re tenacious and don’t give up easily, so try to prevent them from getting established in the first place.
12. Weed little and often
Set aside a dedicated time every week to tackle weeds in the garden to make it easy to keep on top of things.
It’s a known fact that weeding can be therapeutic, so take it as an opportunity to step back from your busy schedule and unwind. Not only will you be doing the garden a favor, but also yourself.
How do you get rid of nettles?
Nettles are good for butterflies, but not so good for neighboring plants
If you’ve been thinking about how to grow a butterfly garden, you might be interested to know that nettles are a valuable food source for these pretty creatures. However, they can swamp corners of your garden quickly, and cause a nasty sting when touched.
The RHS advises to prevent the seeds from setting by cutting down plants in mid-summer, or earlier. You can also dig out isolated clumps, or those that have grown in light soils. This can be done anytime of year, they add. Nettles also cannot withstand repeated mowing.
If you want to use weed killer to tackle a neglected area that’s been overtaken by nettles, opt for a glyphosate-based variety, continues the RHS. Spray over the plants in June, before they flower.
How do you get rid of chickweed?
Learn how to get rid of weeds and stop them from spreading to eradicate the likes of chickweed from your garden
Hand-weeding or carefully hoeing beds and borders can be an effective way to control chickweed, as suggests the RHS. However, aim to do this before the plants flower and their seed sets. Choose a dry day so disturbed weeds shrivel and die rather than re-rooting, they add.
The team also suggest to apply weed suppressing sheets, or bulky mulch to a depth of at least three inches, to smother new seedlings and prevent germination.
If you want to use weed killer, opt for contact herbicides containing acetic acid, fatty acids, or pelargonic acid, the RHS continues. However, be careful not to get these herbicides on your other plants as they are non-selective.
How do you get rid of bindweed?
Don’t be deceived by bindweed’s pretty blooms, its vines will quickly take over your hedges and flowerbeds
Bindweed produces thread-like vines that wrap tightly around other plants, and eventually strangles them. It’s easy to spot with its trumpet-shaped flowers, but don’t be tempted to leave it. Soon after the first flush of blooms are over, it will take over and ruin your flowerbed ideas.
‘Bindweed is an especially clear example of the need to get in quick,’ says Graham Rice for Amateur Gardening. He reckons that for every foot of twining bindweed stem above ground there’s the same amount of invasive root underground. ‘Keep pulling away the top growth,’ Graham says, ‘excavating as much root as you can.’ Eventually, the roots will exhaust themselves trying to make more shoots. If you’re digging downwards to try and remove the roots, go deeper than you might expect.
Getting rid of bindweed takes patience, willpower, and several attempts to pull it up, as any root left behind will sprout again. ‘You have to keep at it, and that’s where most of us fail,’ Graham adds. Allow the shoots and leaves to develop and they’ll fuel underground spread day by day.

Horsetail, sometimes called mare’s tail, is given its name due to the appearance of its fine foliage. If you want to know how to get of weeds, you should know that this one is particularly tricky to eradicate, but it can be done.
The reason why it’s so difficult to remove is the depth of the roots, which can be up to a whopping 6ft long. Your best bet is a commercial weed killer – try bruising the leaves immediately before the treatment.
How do you get rid of ground elder?
Ground elder grows fast, but isn’t too tricky to tackle once you know how to get rid of weeds like these
(Image credit: Erik Agar/Alamy Stock Photo)
Ground elder is another vigorous-grower and will spread across your plot quickly when given the chance. However, its roots are only shallow, so it can be easily removed by hand. Watch out for leftover fragments though – shoots can grow even from the smallest pieces of root. You can also cover the weeds with black polythene to starve them from light, as suggests the RHS.
Don’t be tempted to plant the variegated version, adds the Amateur Gardening experts – its seedlings will be plain green.
How do you get rid of Japanese knotweed?
Japanese knotweed is one of the worst weeds out there – it’s best to seek help from the professionals if you spot this in your plot
It’s no secret that Japanese knotweed is one of the most trickiest weeds out there. It grows incredibly fast – up to 10cm a day in summer. And, it takes little mercy on its surroundings, hurtling through pipes and structural foundations wherever it gets the chance. It’s no surprise that for many regions around the world, you legally have to declare its presence if selling your property.
Trying to remove it yourself is no easy task – it can take many years to combat it with commercial weed killer. And even then, you can only take the waste to specifically licensed tips, and dumping it in the wild is a big no-no. The best way to know how to get rid of weeds of this nature, therefore, is to call in a professional.
How do you get rid of annual meadow grass?
Annual meadow grass is often a result of a slightly-neglected lawn maintenance routine, but can be easily eradicated

Annual meadow grass, otherwise known as Poa annua, is a course type of grass that grows around the world – from all across the Northern Hemisphere to the most southern tip of South America.
It can spread into borders from poorly-maintained lawns and mulches of grass clippings. As the RHS explains, you can identify it in your lawn by the flowering, which can occur below the height of cut. The small, pale seed heads will give your lawn a peppered look.
To prevent it, the best thing to do is to take on a good lawn maintenance routine – our guides on how to mow a lawn, how to scarify a lawn, and spring lawn care tips are all full of useful advice. You can try to remove larger clumps by hand. Lay fresh soil where needed and scatter in new grass seed, to fill in any gaps.
How do you get rid of docks?
Broad-leaved docks are easy to spot with their large leaves
(Image credit: Emanuel Tanjala/Alamy Stock Photo)
Docks have large, easily-recognizable leaves and can appear in borders and lawns in spring. There are two kinds – broad-leaved and curled (the latter have wavy-edged leaves and slightly shorter stems).
They commonly grow across the UK, and have long taproots. They produce lots of seeds, which can survive for up to 50 years in the soil. So, if you spot them, it’s worth learning how to get rid of weeds like these quickly.
The best thing to do is dig them up by hand. Only the top few inches of rootstock can regenerate, so if the top 12–15cm is removed, the risk of regrowth is kept to a minimum. The best time to do this is in spring, as docks are most vulnerable at this time.
How do you get rid of herb robert?
Even though herb robert is quite an attractive plant, you’ll still want to know how to get of weeds like these if you’re after a clean and contemporary garden
Herb robert, also known as red robin and officially named Geranium robertianum has small, pink flowers and fragrant foliage. It’s one of the prettier weeds. But, its vigorous growing habit can make it a nuisance, especially if you’re after orderly and modern garden ideas.
To tackle it, dig it or pull it up before it flowers or seeds – its roots are only shallow so this is typically easy to do. You can also cover it in a layer of mulch – the RHS suggests using coarse bark.
How do you get rid of couch grass?
Couch grass is one of the tricksiest weeds out there, with an ability to grow from the tiniest fragments of rhizome
Couch grass is renowned for being a nightmare weed as it produces a vast network of underground stems and roots that travel through the soil. These then push up new shoots every 5–10cm along their length. Watch out for newly emerging tufts of grass because instead of dying at the end of each season, they keep on going through winter and beyond.
To get rid of it, be extra vigilant with pulling up shoots, because any pieces remaining will resprout if given the chance. To clear your plot, dig up what you can then cover the soil with thick black polythene to exclude light for a couple of seasons.
How do you get rid of dandelions?
Dandelion seedheads may look pretty, but they’re a pain for gardeners
The thick taproots of the dandelion delve deep into the soil and cracks between paving slabs, making them tricky to remove. If tiny pieces of root remain after digging the soil, they’ll resprout and take over.
To get rid of dandelions, it’s best to dig them out with a garden fork, especially before the bright yellow daisy-like flowers turn into fluffy ‘clocks’ and release their airborne seeds. For larger areas, a plastic sheet with mulch on top will prevent dandelions from getting a foothold.
How do you get rid of cleavers?
Cleavers germinate and grow quickly from seed, so if you spot these in your plot, act fast
The stems and seeds of cleavers are sticky, which allows it to scramble around the garden and spread further afield by hitching on to your clothes and animal fur.
Seeds take just two months to become established plants. So, aim to lift them out as soon as the seedlings emerge in flowerbeds and before they flower in mid-spring. Mulching weed-free soil with a good layer of bark chippings will help to suppress the seedlings. Both tasks make good additions to your list of spring garden jobs.
How do you get rid of hairy bittercress?
Hairy bittercress is a fast-spreader, so learn how to get rid of weeds before it takes over your garden
This weed is super-efficient. It’s able to complete its lifecycle in less than a month and disperse thousands of seeds from its seedpods. It grows anywhere and everywhere, from bare soil to garden wall ideas. It’s often imported in potted plants bought from garden centers, which can go on to take root in the garden.
To control its spread, it’s essential to pull up the young plants before they get a chance to flower and set seed. This occurs from March to August. Cultivating the soil will bring up new seeds, although mulching will help to prevent them from germinating.
How do you get rid of shepherd’s purse?
Shepherd’s purse will grow in all kinds of environment
This has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient times. It’s a prolific weed that’s not fussy, growing in sun or in shade garden ideas, and on most soils. From a rosette of hairy leaves, it sends up flowers on tall stems, followed by pods that hold up to a dozen seeds.
Buried in the soil, seeds can remain viable for years, so aim to pull up weeds before they flower. Or, regularly hoe seedlings soon after they appear to sever rosettes from their taproots.
How do you get rid of groundsel?
Try to eradicate groundsel from your plot before it flowers
A native annual, groundsel gets busy flowering and setting seed throughout the year. Even seeds that have been buried in soil for up to six months will germinate when exposed to light.
When looking to remove this weed, it’s important to tease out the plants before the small yellow flowers and fluffy seed heads appear. Left to get a foothold, the leaves become host to rust fungus, which can spread to your plants.
Will saltwater kill weeds?
When wondering how to get rid of weeds, you may have come across saltwater as a natural approach. General table salt is the way to go (plus, is inexpensive) and works by dehydrating the plant.
To apply, mix it with water and then spray directly onto the weed’s foliage. It’s a good solution for gravel or patios, but be careful in terms of flowerbeds as too much salt can affect the pH balance of the soil, as well as damage other nearby plants. For these reasons, it’s not recommended to use this approach on your lawn ideas.
Some people say that mixing the saltwater solution with vinegar increases the effectiveness. But again, watch out for neighboring plants as vinegar will affect whatever it comes into contact with.

How do i take care od my shoes so they last?
CARING FOR YOUR SHOES 101
source: me. i'm a reparative cobbler. i literally do this for a living.ok so you have a pair of shoes of decent quality that fits (or crappy quality shoes that you wanna eek out every last bit of mileage out of in pure spite) and now you have to care for them like a doting parent, but how the fuck are you supposed to do that?? it's not as much of a production as most online how-to's makes it seem:
regular leather: if you're a dirty bitch or one of them people who likes running around in mud for no real reason, remove the excess dirt with a cloth or a soft brush. only use a little water as a last resort. if there's only regular dust and wear, just give them a quick wipe down with a cloth or something idk.apply a thin layer of cream shoe polish (Saphir creme surfine/deluxe is an excellent shoe polish and i highly recommend it. use incolore which has no colour pigments if you can't find the right shade, the shoes have multiple colours or a patina that you wanna keep or if they're brand spanking new and haven't lost any colour). allow it to dry in for like ten minutes before you polish with a cotton cloth (or an old t-shirt or a sock. it's not that important really).
suede/nubuck: remove dust and dirt gently with a suede brush (or one of them nail brushes), spray with waterproofing spray. done. use spray with colour pigments if they look sad and faded.
do these simple steps as often as you can stand, but try to do it at the very least once a month, preferably every other week. you can never do it too often tbh.
more shoe care tips, materials and products underneath the cut!
other materials:
spray textile with waterproofing spray. won't actually proof anything but will makes them easier to keep clean.
syntethic materials won’t accept any help from no shoe care products and will crack or break whenever it damn well feel like it. you can put shoe polish on the fake leather tho, just to make them look nice.
patent leather and such won't absorb any products cause the leather is covered with a thin layer of plastic, but there's special products for keeping them clean and shiny. a moist cloth tends to leave spots bc mineral residues and stuff in the water. do NOT use sour milk or other dairy products on your patent leather
white rubber soles can be maintained by simply wiping them off with a moist cloth when you get home. if really dirty, wash or take to a cobbler to wash.
rubber boots can do with some grease or oil tbh. will help prevent them from drying out.
oiled leather/nubuck tho. there's special products for these. check the labels but grease or oil spray usually does the trick.
but what about all the other stuff? like, the grease/fat/oil, the waterproofing, the washing and The Removal of The Laces™ that all the how-to's talk about?honestly, those things are often excessive and here's why:
washing: unless your shoes are actually dirty (partied too hard and spilled a drink or olive oil on them, large amounts of mud that can't be wiped off, water or salt stains etc), you don't have to wash them. water isn't good for the leather, dries it out so... only do it if you absolutely have to? preferably, take them to a professional and have them do it.
leather grease/fat/oil: honestly, this stuff IS good for the leather and you should use it. but there is such a thing as too much and y'all have no idea how many times i've had to wash a pair of shoes because the owner used too much too often and now there's clogging and fat and dust piled up at the seams like an abandoned butter factory and the shoes just look miserable. apply a thin layer and allow to dry before you apply shoe polish a few times a year. before and after putting your shoes into storage for the season, if they look and feel dry or if you wear them year round, put some on every other or third month. always BEFORE the polish.
waterproofing aka the thing every single shoe store employee tells you to do and it makes me wanna scream every time i hear it: only necessary for suede and nubuck shoes (and usable on textile, as mentioned above). seriously.
a)waterproofing your shoes won't actually make them waterproof, will only help suede to repel the stray water droplet so that it doesn't soak in. won’t help when it’s pouring down.b) proper shoe polish contains wax (is what makes shine when polished) that will protect the leather from water in the same way. adding the spray on top of that is pointless.c) can actually ruin your polish work, make it all matte and occasionally even leave stains, discolour or trap dust.d) is sold as a “fix all” for lazy people to use on all of their shoes regardless of material. fixes nothing. don’t bother unless suede.
removing the laces before polishing: ??? you don't have to? you can work around them. i mean, if you're doing a full care with grease and stuff, it might be easier to remove them but that's up to you. you might get some polish on them but unless you have light or brightly coloured laces it doesn’t hurt them. do exchange them if they break tho. (if they break easily, there might be a sharp edge that rubs at them or, and this is the most likely, you don't unlace properly before forcing your feet into your shoes. the laces take a lot of stress, be nice to them!)
other shoe care products:
wax: such as Kiwi Parade Gloss, Saphir Mirror Gloss etc. a hard-ish bit of wax product that comes in a flat tin. is used to acquire high shine on leather shoes (think spit shine). doesn't actually do that much for the shoe except shine and repel some water. a must for dress shoes but should preferably only be used on the toe cap since it can build up in seams and, if applied the bits that moves a lot, can "crack". it's not damaging to the leather but looks scruffy af. apply with one of them tiny brushes you see in shoe care stores or with a sponge/cloth. polish with a cloth, lamb wool polish glove or a horse hair brush.
fisherman grease: are you a fisherman? no? then don't use it.
quick shine or self shine: do not. contains silicone and shit that won't be absorbed by the leather and won't dry. looks amazing when fresh but will attract dust and turn matte within minutes. shit product designed to appeal to your laziness and take your money while giving you a false sense of accomplishment. seriously, if you're good with the shoe polish, all you need is a a quick rub with a cloth (or the sleeve of your shirt, back of your pant leg) to revive the shine. yes i am a little bitter about the existence of quick shine products,
mink oil: mostly used by old people and hipsters who buy into the whole "the old way is the best way". i highly advice you not to. mink oil is too good at keeping the leather soft. can easily make your shoe leather yucky soft and floppy, the shoe loses shape and turn into a sad, sagging lump. can also discolour the leather (usually into an unsightly green). only use a little if the shoe is drier than the sahara desert.
leather balm/renovateur: technically not the same but has the same usage area. generally too light for shoes but is excellent for other leather goods like jackets, bags and gloves. used the same as shoe polish: apply thin layer, let dry, polish with cloth. redo as often as you can be arsed but at least once or twice a year i mean come on, give your favourite leather bag or jacket some love!
shoe trees: please? do use. preferably made out of cedar. can be expensive but will last you a life time. they will absorb the moisture from your shoes after wear and help them retain their shape (see those creases right at the bend behind your toes? yeah, those will always show up but shoe trees will help minimize them). you can get buy with just one pair, just stick them into which ever pair you wore last. it's highly recommended that you let your shoes dry completely and rest between each use. having two pairs of shoes that you alternate between is good enough.
if you're gonna store your shoes and can't afford buying shoe trees to all your pairs, you can just stuff them with paper or bits of a foam mattress or something, just to help them keep their shape. the ones that has a metal spring in the middle and a ball at the end should be used with caution and only for a day or so at the time, since the spring loaded ball (heh) puts constant pressure on the back piece of the shoe and can actually push it out which is bad and also ugly.oh! and if your knee high boots have zippers, do make sure that zipper is straight when not worn. use a boot tree, a rolled up news paper or a stick a plastic bottle in them. just so that they don’t fold over and put stress on the zipper.
shoe deodorizer: if your shoes are leather with a leather lining and leather inner sole (AND YOU WEAR SOCKS! seriously, please always wear socks or hose or something inside your shoes at all times. or your foot sweat, dead skin and dirt will build up inside your shoes and it is Gross™), they honestly won't smell much at all. deo is unnecessary (unless you have some kind of affliction which makes your foot sweat super powered, which some people actually have and i feel for them). synthetic and fabric shoes are satan when it comes to foot odour and all you can do really is make sure to wear clean socks and change the inner sole as often as possible.
the washing machine: PLEASE. DO NOT PUT YOUR SHOES IN THE WASHING MACHINE! no, not even your converse hi-tops. seriously. all shoes are glued more or less excessively, and the heat and water will make the glue unstick and your shoes will fall apart quicker. take them to a cobbler for a wash if they're really dirty.
and finally: inspect your shoes. if you spot a seam coming out, or the sole unsticking on the inner left or the heel piece is worn down: take them to a reparative cobbler asap. do NOT try to fix it yourself (you can actually make them ten times harder or even impossible to fix). most things that breaks on leather products can actually be fixed, but the longer you let it go without addressing the damage, the worse it will get and the more expensive it will be to fix. expect to spend about half the purchase price on maintaining your shoes at a cobbler. more if they're your favourites and fit like a dream.
do try to find a good cobbler, some are absolute hacks that can ruin your shoes. if you live in a big city, go to the finer parts of town and accost a rich person and ask what cobbler shop they go to. they usually have a favourite cobbler that they remain loyal to/cling to desperately. instagram and/or facebook can also be a good place to check.
craftsmen in europe has journeyman or master "letters" (basically diplomas) that they can only acquire after they've worked in the profession for a certain amount of time and can prove that they're skilled in various parts of the job. you can ask if they have one and if they do, they're probably not completely unskilled.
rule of thumb is if the cobbler also does dry cleaning, seamstress work, plumbing and a hundred other vaguely connected things, chance is high that they aren't as good. this is largely dependent on country tho so... use your common sense.
also, don't bother with chains (such as mr minit) and those that offer quick jobs. doing a job properly takes time and care. rushing generally leads to lower quality work, as with everything. it’s up to you tho.
aaand i think that's about it!
i'll post a guide on how to buy good quality shoes that fit later, but until then, if you have any further questions, or want specific shoe or leather care advice my ask is always open and i'm happy to help :D

“There’s absolutely no one out here.”
I was just a few hours into a solo backpacking trip around Mount Rainier National Park’s 32.8-mile Northern Loop when that realization hit me. It was a cool, clear day in October 2003. None of my usual hiking partners had been available to join me. So I decided to do the trip alone, something I’ve done more times than I could count and felt comfortable with. I had no idea that this time I’d face the kind of situation that solo hikers think about but can never anticipate: a threat that shrinks the margin of safety in the wilderness down to nothing.
When I picked up my backcountry permit that morning, a ranger told me a snowstorm had hit the park just two days earlier. “You’ll probably run into at least a foot of snow on the ground at higher elevations,” he said. That didn’t dissuade me; I was prepared for snow. Neither of us, however, knew about the much bigger storm brewing out over the Pacific Ocean as we spoke, collecting moisture as it barreled toward the Cascade Range.
Mountain goats on Yellowstone Cliffs, along the Northern Loop in Mount Rainier National Park.
That conversation came back to me as I walked past the rippling water of a tiny tarn in a meadow on my way to Windy Gap. Just a few tiny patches of white remained on the ground at 5,600 feet. Sun and mild temperatures had evaporated the recent snow. But apparently no one had been out there since the storm, because even the rangers had no idea what trail conditions were like.
That’s when it hit me: With backcountry rangers warning anyone considering a trip that they would encounter deep snow, I would probably not see another person out there.
Autumn can be the finest time to head into the backcountry. The foliage changes color, brightening the landscape. There are no bugs. The weather often achieves something close to meteorological perfection: skies clear and dry, affording hundred-mile views, and temperatures not too hot during the day, not too cold at night. I’ve enjoyed some of my best days in the mountains in the fall.
But autumn exhibits a bipolar personality. And in October, you are as close to the mountain winter as you are to its summer. In some respects, it is more dangerous than winter because in fall it’s easy to get lulled into trusting the weather. But really good can turn really bad, really fast.
Looking back, I think that most if not all of my hardest, most wretched experiences in the backcountry have occurred between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. On Mt. Rainier National Park’s Northern Loop, I was about to add another to my list.

Approaching Windy Gap on the Northern Loop in Mount Rainier National Park.
That first afternoon, I watched two mountain goats step nimbly across the crumbling face of Yellowstone Cliffs. Then, perhaps inspired by them, I scrambled off-trail from the little, unnamed tarn just before Windy Gap up a talus slope to the saddle between Crescent Mountain and Sluiskin Mountain. There, under a mostly clear sky, forested hills sculpted by ancient volcanic activity undulated away from me to the always improbably enormous, white mass of Mount Rainier (see lead photo at top of story).
Three of the biggest glaciers on “The Mountain,” as western Washingtonians affectionately call Rainier, pour off the northerly aspects I saw from that overlook: the Emmons, Winthrop, and Carbon. On my third day out there, I would walk past the toe of the Carbon, the lowest river of ice in the contiguous United States.
That night, I found myself cocooned in extremes of quiet and darkness, camped below giant firs, pines, and cedars. I could hear only the wind’s occasional perambulations through the treetops, and sank into a sleep as deep as the surrounding silence and blackness.

Lake James along the Northern Loop.
My second morning brought partly cloudy skies—nothing to suggest what was headed my way. I packed up early and headed downhill through cool forest, crossed the silt-gray West Fork of the White River on a log footbridge, then made a 2,500-foot climb up onto a plateau. The meadows of Grand Park sprawled out more than a mile across. A little while later, I reached the cirque of Berkeley Park, where dense copses of conifers mingle with fields of grasses and wildflowers. Though it was long past wildflower season, Berkeley’s rich hues of green give the impression of a meticulously landscaped park.
By afternoon, I was following the Wonderland Trail west across more high meadows. Rainier migrated in and out of clouds, but patches of blue sky let the sun through periodically. The scale of everything felt magnified by a powerful sense of solitude: On one of the country’s most famous backpacking trails, I saw not another human.
But more than that, by that point I had no expectation of seeing anyone else; and once you’ve crossed that mental threshold, you see your world differently. Instead of chatting with a hiking partner or wondering how many backpackers will be sharing the next camp, you are keenly tuned in to every nearby movement or noise, every change in the play of light or shift in the air temperature and wind. It’s not fear so much as a hyper-awareness that we rarely find in everyday life, as if a third eye suddenly sprouted on the back of your head.
Even in the wilderness of many national parks, seeing absolutely no one for days—conjuring a sense of this country’s wild edge before Western settlement—is a rare experience. Most parks, Rainier included, are popular enough that backcountry permit numbers are restricted, both to prevent resource overuse and to preserve some sense of solitude. But that only regulates the numbers of backpackers, of course, not dayhikers. While the number of people you encounter generally corresponds to factors like proximity to major population centers (Rainier’s Nisqually entrance is 85 miles from Seattle) and a trail’s difficulty and distance from the nearest road, during the peak hiking season, you usually cannot walk very far without running into other people.
The Northern Loop of Mount Rainier National Park is a sort of miniature version of the Wonderland Trail, the 93-mile-long footpath encircling Rainier that draws backpackers from all over the planet. The Northern Loop delivers the same Wonderland-esque experience of hiking from temperature rainforest to sub-alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers—in fact, the loop overlaps with a stretch of the WT. But because it’s not nearly as well known, getting a permit for it does not involve the level of competition that you’ll face trying to plan a summer trip on the Wonderland.
By the time I pitched my tent at the Mystic backcountry camp on my second evening, I felt like I’d hit the trifecta. For two clear, crisp autumn days I had basked in complete solitude with jaw-unhinging views of The Mountain and its meadows.
Then the rain came.
Plan your next great backpacking trip in Yosemite, Grand Teton, or other parks using my expert e-guides.
Above the West Fork White River along the Northern Loop in Mount Rainier National Park.
Throughout that second night, wind and water lashed at my shivering tent. In the morning, I ate breakfast inside my cool, damp little nylon shelter, packed up as quickly as I could as rain drummed onto me, and set out in conditions approximating a category one hurricane.
I’ve plodded down trails through biblical-scale rains from New Zealand to Vermont’s Long Trail. On the latter, I was attempting a thru-hike—also in an October several years before this Rainier trip, also solo (yes, I’m a patient learner)—but aborted it after two weeks and 10 inches of rain, heading home with waterlogged boots and spirits.
But I’m not sure I’ve ever seen rain like I saw that day on the north side of Rainier. The unrelenting downpour was punctuated by wind-borne sheets of water that hit me as if hurled from a barrel. Miserable as it was, though, it was hard to not feel awed. Following the Wonderland Trail around the shore of Mystic Lake, I watched the bizarre phenomenon of atmosphere impersonating ocean as visible waves of water rolled one after another through the air above the choppy lake surface. The rain fell torrentially and without pause; I could often see no more than one or two hundred feet before everything bled into a blank wall of battleship gray. Midday was as dim as dusk.
It became clear that I needed to get back to my car as quickly as possible that day—not just because the trip had ceased being fun, but for my own safety. I crossed a rain-slicked log bridge over a creek so bloated that its white teeth gnashed at the 10-inch-wide platform beneath my boots. Had I arrived there an hour later, the bridge might have been gone.
I hurried the miles to my car, anxious to be dry—but not fully aware of the urgency of escaping quickly.

Berkeley Park along the Northern Loop.
That October 2003 tempest would become the second of four storms within just 12 years to cause 100-year or bigger floods in the Pacific Northwest, from Mount Rainier to the North Cascades and the Olympic Peninsula. Scientists now know that the warming climate is incubating larger, more destructive storms—in part simply because air can hold more moisture as it warms.
The third storm in that series, in November 2006, dropped nearly 18 inches of rain in 36 hours—the equivalent of getting 15 feet of snow. It triggered record floods in Mount Rainier National Park—destroying roads and trails, burying one backcountry campground beneath a massive lahar, or debris flow (no one was there at the time), washing away at least two dozen log bridges over creeks along the Wonderland Trail, and closing the park to motor vehicles for an unprecedented six months.
That 2006 storm would also swell the Carbon River sufficiently to erase a huge swath of the trail I was hiking on my last day on the Northern Loop, and the road I would drive out to civilization. (The trail was repaired; the road no longer exists.) It’s not hyperbolic to say that, had the 2003 storm begun a little earlier or stalled a little longer over the region, I might have ended up as the subject of the kind of brief accident report that parks issue now and then, which dryly explain that no trace of the missing person was ever found.

None of that transpired, of course. I made it safely to my car and drove out of the park, happy to be dry, warm, and safe. I told my wife what happened, but otherwise, almost no one knew how close I came to being a grim statistic.
Absolute solitude in the wilderness is a precious stone that should always be handled with care. It sometimes arrives gift-wrapped in circumstances magical and enlightening, or challenging far beyond what you expected—or both in the same trip.
And sometimes what transpires is mostly just a matter of timing and luck.

Easy Health And Fitness - Swimming - An Entire Body Exercise | Connor Myerson
Let's deal with the weight-loss problem straight off, because if we do not, you could bypass one of the best exercises around.
Connor Myerson
Swimming, custom has it, is not a great way to lose weight - an enduring item of misinformation that admittedly isn't eliminated by paper pictures of Hindenburg-size marathon swimmers stumbling from some freezing sea.
Real, when you swim, your body is sustained by water, and also because you aren't compelled to fight gravity, there can be much less calorie shed. It is additionally real that some marathon swimmers won't be modeling underwear anytime quickly (actually, it behooves marathon swimmers to bring some fat as valuable insulation against icy water). As well as it holds true that a 150-pound man swimming at a leisurely rate burns roughly 6 calories a minute. He can shed nearly twice the calories going for a pedestrian 12-minute-mile pace.
Yet before you turn your back on the swimming pool, consider this. That same 150-pounder can increase his calorie burn by swimming quicker. Swimming butterfly (the most challenging of swimming's 4 strokes) burns roughly 14 calories a minute - a better caloric melt than tennis, squash, or football (football). What we're discussing below is intensity, which discusses why Olympic swimmers (unlike marathon swimmers) have the sort of body that obtains the duty of Tarzan.
Swimming supplies others other benefits that can't be overlooked. Because you are supported by water, it's a low-impact sport and therefore basically injury-free. For the exact same factor it's also a great workout if you're obese, since it spares your joints the pounding experienced in gravity-bound sporting activities like running.
The diverse strokes utilized in swimming take your joints via a complete series of motion that can boost adaptability. Most important, few workouts provide you the head-to-toe muscle mass exercise that swimming does.
You are utilizing nearly all the significant muscle mass teams of the body. the legs, hips, abdominals, breast, shoulders, and also upper back - all of these muscular tissues are functioning. You can also get tremendous excitement to the heart and respiratory system. Regarding general health and wellness goes, swimming is an excellent conditioner.
 Beginning
Here's a likely circumstance: Excited by the prospect of all these benefits, man goes to the swimming pool. Man wears fit as well as goggles. Guy presses off the wall surface and also produces the various other end. Man provides self and also lifeguard a significant scare.
Swimming, it needs to be claimed, is not a sport that comes easily. Observe entertainment swimming pools, which are usually full of folks that look like they're much more thinking about self-preservation than workout. We're mosting likely to reveal you how to make that shift from surging wheezer to stylish swimmer and also exactly how to enhance also if you're currently in your home in the water.
Obtain Certified Instruction - Learning to swim may feel like something for preschoolers in water wings. But also if you can successfully browse from one end of the pool to the other, correct technique is not something that you can learn by yourself.
Be Patient - We anticipate to select things up rapidly. Swimming will not be among them. Learning proper stroke techniques requires time, which takes persistence. Individuals desire outcomes immediately, but swimming is extremely technological, which is truly frustrating for a great deal of people. Knowing swimming's 4 strokes - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and also butterfly is not difficult, but it is crucial that you find out just how to do them correctly if you wish to obtain one of the most out of swimming.
Relax In The Water - When you're learning to swim, kicking back is one of the most important thing that you can do - as well as the most difficult. When individuals are learning to swim, they obtain anxious and they tense up. And when they do that, they find themselves sinking, as well as it's simply that much more challenging. You require to kick back and also remain loose. If you take place to be one of those people whose muscular tissues lock right into a state resembling rigor mortis whenever you go near the swimming pool, you may wish to get a set of swim fins. They make your kick extra powerful, which implies that they will certainly keep you up and planing throughout the surface, even when you're stressful and also tight.
Obtain The Right Equipment - There's not a lot that you need to purchase, just a suit as well as swimming goggles. The option of match is yours. Competing matches are light and also comfy. More vital, they use virtually no drag in the water. Swimming goggles are a must. Keeping the pool from becoming an infection get-together calls for liberal use chemicals and also a lot of these chemicals are tough on the eyes. Sometimes, you'll see swimmers wearing nose plugs or earplugs. Save your money. Unless you're specifically prone to swommer's ear, the body is created to endure moisture in these certain orifices. Nevertheless, earplugs have a tendency to befall while you're swimming, and also nose plugs make it difficult to take a breath - and also when you're swimming hard, you wish to be trapping all the oxygen you can.
Swimming For Physical fitness
Swimming looks easy, particularly when you see seasoned swimmers glide with the water. But swimming is an exceptionally requiring sport; for novices it can be a fight simply to get to the various other end of the swimming pool.
To achieve strong fundamental fitness, try swimming 3 to 4 times a week, logging in between 2,000 and also 3,000 backyards (about 1.5 to 2 miles) each workout. Most swimmers can get that kind of distance in regarding a hr.
If you're fairly in shape but new to swimming, specialists recommend swimming in between 500 and 1,000 yards each workout. Then build slowly from there. Swimming is an energetic task. You'll be utilizing brand-new muscle mass, as well as it's easy to emphasize them. Shoulder injuries are specifically usual amongst overzealous newbies.
Start With A Warm Up - Swimming may be a forgiving sport, but you still wish to loosen up prior to diving right into a high-bore exercise. Experts advise swimmers to heat up with a 400 lawn swim - 200 yards freestyle, 100 backyards of backstroke, and also 100 yards of breaststroke - mixing up the strokes to bring all the muscles right into play.
Work Up To Periods - Although you can obtain an outstanding exercise by swimming straight time, doing the same stroke at the same pace for half a hr or two, you'll melt significantly a lot more calories by doing an interval workout. This is nothing greater than a collection of swims separated by a particular quantity of remainder (the interval). For instance, you might do 10 50-yard freestyle swims, leaving the wall surface every minute. Or you may do 5 100-yard freestyle swims leaving the wall every 2 minutes. A common swimming workout contains several sets, with about 10 to 30 2nd intervals in between each swim of the set, after that a number of mins rest between each collection. The crucial point is not to allow too much rest during the collection, you do not wish to fully recoup in between swims.
Mix Your Rates - A lot of people just problem themselves to swim at one rate because they do the very same type of exercise constantly. If you intend to enhance, you need to learn to swim quickly. It's not that every swim requirements to be a sprint. The concept is to blend points up. As opposed to swimming the very same half-mile pedestrian plod each day, for instance, do intervals instead. And also make at the very least among those interval sets entail fast swimming. Swimming fast brings even more muscle mass fibers into play, tax obligations the heart and also lungs more, as well as burns as much as two times the calories. Naturally, when you're swimming fast, you'll need to relax longer between each swim to make sure that you can actually make a high quality effort. As an example, when doing 10 50-yard swims, you may intend to leave the wall every 2 mins rather than the 1 minute suggested for a slower pace. You're relaxing extra, however I guarantee you will be beat. An added point: It's constantly a good idea to do your sprints established early in the exercise while you're still fresh.
Mix Your Strokes - Numerous swimmers swim nothing but freestyle. If you are among them, you're losing out. Tossing swimming's other strokes into your workout will certainly assist you strike much more muscles and also enhance your flexibility by bringing different activities right into play.
Put Your Arms And Legs to Function - Pulling (swimming making use of just your arms) and also kicking (using just your legs) are great enhancements to any kind of swimming workout. Pulling is an excellent upper-body conditioner. Kicking hits your legs; add a set of fins, as well as you'll raise ankle adaptability, making your legs function also harder. And since they involve huge muscles, kicking and drawing raise your heart price virtually as high as swimming the complete stroke. When kicking, do not utilize a kick-board. Holding on to the plastic foam board raises your upper body and also drops your hips as well as legs down. Excellent swimming indicates balancing the hips and also head near the surface of the water; having your legs angling down like supports doesn't complete that.
Obtain A Fast Burn - If you're looking for a challenging workout that you can do in marginal time, here's a challenging alternative. The trick to this workoutisn't speed, however minimizing your rest periods to the absolute minimum. Utilizing the stroke of your choice, keep the effort rather very easy, claim 60 percent of your optimum heart rate. But keep the rest period in between swims really brief, no more than 7 to 15 secs, depending upon the distance you're swimming. For example, if you're doing a series of short swims (state, 50 backyards), you may want to relax regarding 7 seconds between each one. For longer swims of 200 lawns, as an example, take 15 seconds in between every one. Keeping the pause brief allows practically no time at all for healing. This maintains your heart rate up as well as knocking, giving you a fantastic workout in a relatively brief time. You're training your heart to be a whole lot extra effective. As well as it doesn't suggest even more time in the swimming pool. It indicates swimming extra laps in the provided time. You can get in a terrific workout in an hour lunch break.
