This is probably a very stupid question, but how did the Ancient Greeks measure time (in terms of years and months) ? What was their calendar like? What year would Alexander have viewed himself to be living in?
I love these sorts of daily-life details, so I may have got a little carried away…. Before I get into the weeds, however, I want to make everyone aware of a reference resource:
E. J. Bickerman, Chronology of the Ancient World. Thames & Hudson, 1968.
Yeah, it’s old now, but Bickerman spent most of his career on dating puzzles, and I don’t think there’s anything recent to match it. When I first was told about it years ago in my historiography class, I practically bounced off the walls. (My fellow grad students thought I’d lost my mind.)
I’m not sure of the best way to address this query—topically or geographically—but I’ll go with topically. I’ll also say upfront that I’m unfamiliar with Egypt, so they’re not much mentioned. Also, if you want more details on any particular system (Roman, Athenian, Babylonian, Jewish), there are plenty of online resources.
Tumblr media
Long-count Calendar
How to number years across a span? Regnal years was most common in antiquity: year 1, year 2, year 3 of ___ king. Also, king lists detailed how long ___ ruled. The Ancient Near East (ANE) excelled at chronologies; we have some that go back to Sumer. That’s pre-Bronze Age. The span of some reigns can be deeply problematic (e.g., mythical), but we have the lists. Fun note, Neo-Assyrians named years by its major military campaign. Tells us a lot about them, no?
What about places without kings? Greece, Rome, Carthage?
The Greeks had several systems, internal and panhellenic. Internal systems often dated by the name of a prominent city magistrate. In Athens, that was the eponymous archon, in Sparta, the eponymous ephor, etc. The panhellenic system used Olympic years. In Dancing with the Lion, if you look at date plates before sections, that’s what I used. It’s a 4-year system, so, “In the year of the 97th Olympiad,” “In the first year of the 97th Olympiad,” “In the second year…,” and “In the third year…,” then we’re to “In the year of the 98th Olympiad…” In modern annotation it’s Ol. 97.1, Ol. 97.2, Ol. 97.3, Ol. 97.4. From (our year) 776 BCE down into the Roman Imperial era, the Olympics made useful anchor dating for the eastern Mediterranean (Magna Graecia).
Rome had its own system: two in fact. It counted years by both consuls, but also AUC = ab urba condita … “from the founding of the city.” Carthage used a similar system involving their two senior Judges for their senate.
When it came to “world histories,” authors such as Diodoros Siculus used several systems: Olympiad, Athenian archon, and Roman consuls. It gets a bit unwieldy, but is about as universal as we have for the Med until Christianity took over everything.
Yearly Calendars
Much of the ancient world used lunar (354 days), not solar (356 days) calendars. Yes, they knew a lunar year didn’t line up with the solar, and they used “intercalation” to fix it, avoiding summer festivals being celebrated in winter. Either a 13th month was needed every 3 years, or they added a few days to months here and there, making a “lunisolar” calendar. We have an intercalated day in our own calendar: Feb. 29th in Leap Year. To fix a calendar, however, an “anchor” is needed. This anchor is usually a solstice or equinox, which may (or may not) correspond to their New Year.
Our modern (Western) world places New Year’s in the dead of winter. But many pre-modern calendars put it in spring. Makes sense: life renews, it’s a new year. The Babylonian New Year was decided by the spring equinox—first new moon after—which pattern affected most of the ANE.
Tumblr media
The Hebrew New Year (Rosh Hashana) is in autumn, but their first month (Nisan) is in spring. (They also have a New Year for Trees! Tú bish'vat. How cool is that?) Wanna know when your Jewish friends are having a holiday? Use Hebcal, the gold standard.
Tumblr media
MANY ancient cultures have more than one calendar running at a time. So do we. Working in the uni, I have the “normal” year, but also the “academic” year to keep up with.
Despite the dominance of certain early systems like Babylon, counting the new year was specific to a region and people, and their religious traditions. No single Greek new year tradition existed. Both Delos and Athens used the first new moon after the summer equinox: early July. The Macedonian calendar seems to as well, so Alexander was born in the first month of the year. Other city states were different. I’ve forgotten most but do remember Sparta’s is in autumn because their new year almost falls on my birthday.
Remember, although we today talk about “ancient Greece” as if it were a country—it wasn’t. There was a landmass called Hellas, but each city-state was independent, and had its own laws, gov’t, coinage, and religious cult. Too often “Greek” winds up being conflated with “Athenian,” because we happen to have the most evidence from ancient Athens. But both Athens and Sparta were weirdos. Corinth, Thebes, Argos, Mytilene, Cos, Eretria, Miletus…all were a lot more typically Greek in their gov’t systems, etc. There were also 3 (or 4) different branches of Greek: Ionic-Attic, Doric, and Aeolic. When we talk about reading the “ancient Greek” language today, most people mean Attic Greek, or even Koine Greek (Hellenistic era common Greek).
That means every city-state had its own calendar, connected to its own festivals.
In fact, most city-states had several: sacred, civic, etc. Athens had a 12-month lunar calendar for festivals, but a 10-month civic calendar corresponding to the 10 tribes for Assembly business. Originally, they had only 4 tribes, not 10, so political changes meant calendar changes.
In each city-state, month names were derived from the major festival for that month. We have the complete month names for only a few: Athens is one and (fortunately for me) Macedon is another (specifically Ptolemaic, but it’s likely the same as the Argead). Below “Ancient Greek Month” REALLY means “Athenian month,” which annoys the hell out of those of us who don’t consider Athens the be-all and end-all of Greek history!
Tumblr media
Because their months were lunar, they bisect our months, e.g., July/Aug = Athenian Hekatombian or Macedonian Loos [Alexander’s birthmonth], Jan/Feb = Athenian Gamelion or Macedonian Peritios [probably the month that gave Alexander’s favorite hound his name: Peritos]. Likewise, as the Athenian new year began in midsummer, dating ancient events also bisects. You’ll see 342/1 to designate the year from July of 342 BCE to June of 341.
As mentioned, most places used lunar months as the most basic time-keeping, but the moon isn’t the only way to make a “month.” Rome originally had 10 months of 30/31 days, adding 2 later, which is why our 12 months have Romanesque names.
Just remember: NO UNIVERSAL SYSTEM for months.
What About Weeks?
A seven-day week is borrowed from the Jews via Christianity. Both Jews and Egyptians had a dedicated day of rest. (For Egypt, the 10th day.) In most places, however, days off were festival related. Every month had festivals, which might last from half a day to several days in a row. You worked…took off for a festival…then you worked. No regular day of rest. (For the modern weekend? Thank unions and the Labor Movement!)
How did others subdivide a month? Athenian months were c. 30 days, divided into 10s: 1-10, 11-20, 10-1. Yup, the last is backwards. But dating also counted waxing and waning moons. So the new moon began a month, the 7th of the month would be the 7th waxing moon, the 24th the 6th waning moon. This is the Athenian system. Other city-states are less clear, but probably similar.
Romans had kalens (1st), nones (7th), and ides (15th). Nundinae (market days) means 9th, but were really the 8th day. The 7-day week is late Imperial and, again, owes to Christian take-over of Jewish weeks.
Most systems had “auspicious” and “inauspicious” days for religious activities, civic activities, and business activities. Don’t start anything on an inauspicious day! (These were manipulated, especially in Rome, but that’s a whole different discussion.) The closest modern equivalent I can think of is Mercury Retrograde. 😊 Although in modern Greece, signing a contract on a Tuesday morning is bad juju, or May 29th. Constantinople fell on a Tuesday morning May 29th, 1453. We might, in America, consider 9/11. Who wants to open a business on 9/11?
The Horai (The Hours)
When did the day begin? Again, the ANE and Med are different. In the ANE, day typically began at sunset. So yes, that’s why the Jewish shabbat starts at sunset on Friday and lasts till sunset on Saturday. (If you didn’t know, the Jewish “day of rest” isn’t Sunday, but Saturday.)
For Greece and Rome, et al., day began at dawn. Each day was then evenly divided between day and night, so there was no standard length of an hour. It depended on the time of year. Each half had twelve hours, subdivided into 4 groups of triads. Originally in Greece it seems there were only 9, not twelve, but they increased to match the lunar months. The division of 4 groups of triads also yielded the 4 seasons of 3 months each. Hora was initially a season, not an hour.
In any case, dawn was always the first hour, noon the 6th, sunset the 12th. Same deal for night (twilight, midnight, pre-dawn).
This is great for military and civic purposes, but most people tended to refer to daytime divisions more generally: dawn, midday, etc. And there was nothing like minutes or seconds. That’s totally modern. Closest, they might come would be to count “breaths.”
The gnomon (sundial) was the chief way to measure hours, as it matched longer or shorter days. But it’s kinda hard to use a sundial at night, or on a cloudy day, or inside. Night hours were approximate.
Tumblr media
The water clock (klepsudra) was first popularized in Greece in courts and the Assembly (to time speeches), but spread to other use, for inside or on shady days. Yet water clocks are unwieldy to carry around.
Tumblr media
The Romans did have portable sundials (below), but again…needs the SUN. Btw, I should add that sundials aren’t only a Greco-Roman thing. The Chinese had them too. By contrast, the sand-clock or hourglass is a medieval invention. Won’t find them in the ancient world.

Big Bang 2019 Honorable Mentions
So this is going to be the list for this year’s 2019 Big Bang entries that had no explicit sex or mostly bottom!Sam/Jared or equal switching and I’ll label them accordingly! I’ll be updating and reblogging this at the end of each day, give or take. No postings on weekends. Please consider leaving a comment if you read any of these stories, as it is the only payment the author ever receives. And, as always, head the warnings where the story is posted.
June 17th - Homecoming by runedgirl on LiveJournal. Sam/Dean. Wincest AU. Summary:   John Winchester likes to say that his son Sam is the epitome of an Alpha, a chip off the old block. Together they hunt the monsters that killed Sam’s mother and older brother, leaving Sam with only fragmented memories of his lost family. John has taught Sam to mistrust Omegas, who are relegated to the lowest rung of society, stigmatized and marginalized as lacking in both strength and intelligence. That doesn’t stop Sam from falling for a sex worker named Dean, a man as strong and smart as Sam who he’s surprised to find is an Omega – but that’s not the only thing Dean is hiding. There’s a much bigger surprise in store for Sam and the beautiful stranger. (this has switching, but it is more bottom!Dean)
June 18th - Nothing that fits the criteria.
June 19th - Nothing that fits the criteria.
June 20th - Beast Master by junkerin on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU. Jensen is a special agent working now for the EPA (Environment Protection Agency) after a dramatic event killed his partner. Now he is investigating a case of illegal toxic waste dumping.Jared is a ranger in Yellow Stone Park. He lives with his dog Sammy up alone in the park and his main social contacts are his friends and colleges Chad and Gen. He discovered that some one is dumping toxic waste in the park (he found several dead animals). Oh and there is the thing that he can talk to animals. The two are now working together to stop the pollution of an untouched nature. As the two walk through Yellow Stone they both discover there is more to each other than what is visible at the first sight. (equal switching)
Keep This Secret by ellerkay on Ao3. Sam/Dean. Wincest.  Sam and Dean travel to the fairy realm hoping to make a deal to get Adam released from the Cage. The price: their shared secret. (no penetrative sex, but Sam comes off as toppy)
June 21st - Like a wave crashing over me by @soy-em on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU.  Jensen’s happy with his life. He lives by the sea, spends his days taking photos of the landscape around him and doesn’t really talk to his neighbours. He’s content in the world he’s created for himself. Until Jared shows up on his beach, and for the first time in years, Jensen wants to find a way to overcome his shyness and let someone in. (no penetrative sex)
No posting on weekends. See you on Monday!
June 24th - Nothing that fits the criteria.
June 25th - Nothing that fits the criteria.
June 26th - The Sceptre and the Stone by zubeneschamali on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU. Jared has been making a living as a smuggler while his city and country have been under occupation by the Iron Lord. It's dangerous work, but it keeps his mind off the way things used to be, and how unlikely it is that they can ever go back. Unlikely, that is, until he gets a package to the one man who could change the world—if they don't both get caught first.Prince Jensen has been in hiding for five years, the last of the rightful rulers of his kingdom. The plans he's been painstakingly making for recovering the throne and restoring magic to his people are brought to a head when an uncommonly skilled smuggler delivers him what he most needs. As he puts his plan into motion, though, he's going to have to figure out how to deal with said smuggler—including the way he makes Jensen want things that have nothing to do with regaining his kingdom. (no penetrative sex, dominant!Jensen).
June 27th - First We’ll Take Manhattan by candygramme and spoonlessone on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU. Jensen is a fashion designer looking for a model to be the ‘face’ of his line. Enter Jared, an aspiring Broadway actor who hasn't ever modeled, but Jensen believes he's perfect for the part. Jared has no idea what he's getting into. There's glitz and drama. There's the excitement he craves, but there's also heartbreak and misery lurking just under the surface. In the rush to get everything ready for fashion week, things get complicated. Jared joins Adrianne Palicki and Aisha Taylor, his other models, and Jensen, along with his staff, get busy putting outfits together for him. (no penetrative sex)
You’ve Got to be Kitten Me by dugindeep on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU. Jensen lives a routine, solitary life with little to no interaction and he likes it just fine. He’d rather not deal with the fuss and rejection of making and keeping connections, so when a stray cat shows up at his apartment building and begs for attention every time they cross paths, Jensen does what he can to ignore it. Of course, that doesn’t last long and he finds himself carving out a space in his world to make it feel at home. Along the road of pet ownership, Jensen meets the very nice and very handsome Dr. Jared Padalecki. The veterinarian's open, warm personality gets to Jensen the same way his new cat has, and Jensen fights against his own hang-ups to get to know him. (warning: no penetrative sex but Jensen wants to bottom)
June 28th - The Road To Come What May by roxymissrose on Ao3. Sam/Dean. Wincest.  A few years back, Dean grabbed his brother and declared to the world, enough! They’d needed to take a breath, and thanks to an unexpected gift from their father, they were able to settle down, act like civilians, at least for a bit. Now, it was time to go back to their only real home, maybe this time for good. What the hell—let some younger, fresher guys handle the world and its problems. Sure, he’d screwed up a lot in the intervening years, but Dean hoped settling down in a new home, and with the promise of normal, he could make it up to Sam. (no penetrative sex)
No posting on weekends. See you on Monday!
July 1st - Nothing that fits the criteria.
July 2nd - Nothing that fits the criteria.
Also, as this Thursday is a national holiday in the U.S., Wendy only has stories scheduled for today and tomorrow  for this week.
Happy 4th of July to those in the U.S. that celebrate it!
July 8th - Nothing that fits the criteria.
July 9th - Island in the Sun by Mangacat on Ao3. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU.  It’s not your typical meet-cute: Jensen, a nano-cybernetics specialist, saved Jared - mortally injured Afghan war veteran - by replacing and rebuilding several of his limbs and organs with cybernetic nano-technology. After struggling with trauma, the otherness of his body, his new extra-human abilities and a very ambiguous relationship with his saviour, Jared has to go on the run from the US government to keep his life and sanity with only Jensen at his side. Now, still fugitives, they’re trying to carve out a life for themselves without tripping any nets of the military and intelligence, when the greatest threat they’ll be facing actually comes from a wholly unexpected direction… (no penetrative sex - I was very tired reading this, so I do not think there was anything mentioned at all, but be aware this is a sequel to a top!Jared story and I might have missed a reference to past events)
July 10th - The Nobleman and the Sword by winterwolke on LiveJournal. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU.  Every noble gets to choose their Sword. They use them ti fight, empowered by their very own magic. Jared lost his Sword. He couldn't control his magic and accidentally killed his trusted one. He live a reclusive life in a secluded keep, far away form the arduous intrigues the other nobles play to gain power and wealth. He has sworn to never pick a Sword again, no matter how direly his kingdom might need him. But there is a prophey, and Jared doesn't know yet that prophecies somtimes come true. (no sex of any kind)
July 11th - It's Just a Dimension Jump (to the Left) by Disneymagics on Livejournal. Jared/Jensen. J2 AU.  Jensen has had a rough life with all the scars, physical, mental, and emotional, to prove it.  He keeps them all hidden because he learned from an early age what telling the truth will get him, a room in a home for troubled teens and antipsychotic meds.  But no matter what anyone else says, he knows monsters do exisit.  From the time he was fifteen years old, he's been on a quest that has consumed his whole life.  Maybe, when he reaches the end of his quest, he can lead a normal life again.  Maybe, he can even reconnect with his high school sweetheart, Jared.  Nah, that's just a fairy tale and fairy tales don't come true.  Not for Jensen. (no penetrative sex; Jensen-centric)

PHOBIAS AND FEARS: extremely deep waters and though it’s not a phobia, she gets really nervous when she’s driving over bridges. MENTAL ILLNESSES: none so far. PHYSICAL ILLNESSES: none so far. Magickal Month- May 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Magickal Month- May 2019 May was named after the Roman goddess Maia, a goddess of fertility and abundance. Several cultures marked May with fertility festivals of some sort or another, and our modern Pagan festival of Beltane is no exception. It’s a celebration of fertility, sexuality, flowers, and love. Spring has sprung, and it’s time to celebrate all the good things in life! All I want to listen to in May is dub music. This warming weather needs chill music, and there’s nothing more relaxing and happy to me. Here’s the Pandora playlist I can’t seem to turn off lately. There have been so many critters around lately. We’ve seen lots of birds, known and unknown, and the squirrels are in full frolic mode. We even have a new cat in the neighborhood and I’m partially annoyed that people don’t keep their cats in and partially thrilled to try and make friends. Also, tons of frogs have been appearing for us. I’ve even been doing a little light gardening as my body allows. Lunations: May 4- New Moon in Taurus, 6:45pm EDT May 18- Full Moon in Scorpio, 5:11pm EDT Astronomy: May 6- Eta Aquariids meteor shower begins May 10- Eta Lyrids meteor shower begins Celtic Tree Month: Willow (April 15th- May 12th): Resonance and harmony, creativity, fertility, feminine rights of passage, inspiration, love, love divination, sleep with a willow wand for vivid dreams, protection for underworld journeying, found near water, spring cleaning physically/mentally/emotionally/spiritually, letting go of the past. Hawthorn (May 13th- June 9th); Matters of the heart, love, empowering relationships, fertility, union of male and female (Beltane), intimacy, passion, triple goddess, purification, cleanses the heart of negativity, under protection of faerie realm, guards wells and springs, happiness. Holidays (non-Pagan): May 1: Yom HaShoah (Jewish) May 2: National Day of Prayer May 4: Star Wars Day May 5: Cinco de Mayo May 6: Ramadan starts (Muslim) May 9: Yom Ha’atzmaut (Jewish) May 12: Mother’s Day May 18: Armed Forces Day May 23: Lag BaOmer (Jewish) May 27: Memorial Day May 30: Ascension Day (Christian) May 31: Lailat al-Qadr (Muslim) Holidays (Pagan): May 1: Beltane/May Day- a fire festival dedicated to fertility May 5: Thargelion Noumenia- Greek festival dedicated to all the deities. May 8: Greek feast of Aphrodite and Eros, honoring love and passion May 10: Thargelia- Greek festival honoring Artemis and Apollo and purification of the community. May 18: Feast of the Greek god Pan May 19: Celtic festival of wells and springs honoring Brigid Themes for the month: Celebration, flowers, joy, sexuality, growth, expansion, warmth and fun. General activities for the month: Cooking out, swimming, spending time outside, gathering flowers, love magick, beauty magick, sex magick. Herbs I’m using: Fresh dill, symbolic of Spring and love and sexuality. Parsley, it tastes so green and herbal and delicious, so I’m adding it to everything I cook. Sage and cedar, to bless and cleanse the new place so the energy is fresh and clear! Stones I’m using: Selenite, also to clear, cleanse, and refresh the energy of the new place. Chrysoprase, iridescent green that has such a natural/plant energy, it reminds me of Spring and the forest. Rutilated smoky quartz, the enormous, 10 lb chunk I have that’s being transferred from its place of honor in this house to a place of honor in the new house. Goddess of the Month: Persephone as Kore, Goddess of flowers and Spring. As a Goddess who has returned from The Underworld, her joy and innocence show us that we can come back from the darkness ourselves. Her joy has been earned, and I feel like it’s all the sweeter as a result. 3 card reading:
Tumblr media
May 2019 3 Card Reading This month, we start with the Knight of Swords. So we’re communicating clearly and possibly even aggressively. But we aren’t accepting any bullshit, and we’re cutting through to the truth of things. We’re finding a sense of clarity and focus this month, and this may even mean cutting away things that are holding us back. Next, we see the Page of Cups. So we’re also feeling idealistic about a new start this month. This could be a new love, a new spiritual endeavor, or a new creative project. We’re feeling the beginnings of something that we really care about. Whether or not it lasts is another question alltogether. The excitement is in the beginning. And finally, we have 8 of Cups. So in order to enjoy our new beginning above, we may have to leave behind something else that we’ve built. It may be that the thing that the Knight of Swords is cutting away is what’s allowing us to have the new start of the Page of Cups. This is fine, and it’s a natural progression in life. When you see the 8 of Cups, you know that it’s time to turn from what you once thought was important and move toward a new future. Our special guidance card is Know Your Fears. So this is a call to examine what it is that you’re afraid of, especially in letting go of the old. Are you afraid that the new thing won’t measure up? Or that you’ll miss what you’re leaving behind? Spend some time really thinking about what it is that you’re afraid of, and whether your fears are justified, or whether they’re just holding you back. The Garden by Moonlight By Amy Lowell A black cat among roses, Phlox, lilac-misted under a first-quarter moon, The sweet smells of heliotrope and night-scented stock. The garden is very still, It is dazed with moonlight, Contented with perfume, Dreaming the opium dreams of its folded poppies. Firefly lights open and vanish High as the tip buds of the golden glow Low as the sweet alyssum flowers at my feet. Moon-shimmer on leaves and trellises, Moon-spikes shafting through the snow ball bush. Only the little faces of the ladies’ delight are alert and staring, Only the cat, padding between the roses, Shakes a branch and breaks the chequered pattern As water is broken by the falling of a leaf. Then you come, And you are quiet like the garden, And white like the alyssum flowers, And beautiful as the silent sparks of the fireflies. Ah, Beloved, do you see those orange lilies? They knew my mother, But who belonging to me will they know When I am gone. My personal tides: We’re finally moving to our new sacred home! There were several false starts, but it looks like we just needed the oomph of Beltane to jolt the energy into motion. When I wrote April’s post, we were supposed to have closed by the time it posted, but it didn’t happen. May is our month! So we’ve started moving and doing some renovation work, doing our final rounds of decluttering and minimizing, and getting that full-life transformation that we’ve really been needing for a long, long time. My personal goals: Husbear’s foot is still gummy, so a lot of the move is on me. Fortunately, we’re moving about 20 minutes away, so if I can take 3 car-sized loads/week, we’ll get there in time. Then one or two big loads of furniture, and BOOM! Moved. Then comes the yard sale… :0) Pretty much everything is revolving around my vision of what I want this new life to be and creating SACRED HOME for Husbear, the cats, and myself. :-) Blessed be! :-) Read the full article

Reconnection is soul-affirming, as well as you’ll be feeling the love and also re-energized throughout the brand-new moon on August 18th, when a carolers of familiar wails and yips welcome you when you get in the dog run to play.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Jealousies in partnerships will certainly be really felt on August 15th, mostly since your good friends envy of the gifts your moms and dads showered you with to celebrate your special holiday this month. Don’t take their bitterness to heart; your close friends simply wish they were being showered with attention, love, and also provides the method you are. If you can, share your good fortune with others, and at the minimum, aim to be charitable in your spirit around others that are much less fortunate.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
You’re getting a little tired with human beings presuming that you desire them to pet dog you all the time. Hi, it’s called borders! Before you communicate your nuisance with a bark or hiss, your mom or papa needs to know you’re greater than simply a toy. A look can speak a million words on August 7th. If that does not work instantly, offer it a couple of days, concentrate on your demands and your own self-care, and see if they occur.
Capricorn(December 22-January 19 )You’ve been making strides learning to love on your own, to not be afraid of your own darkness, as well as to bring even more pep right into your step these days. You’ll begin to see the fruits of all this effort during the new moon in Leo on August 18th. Later on, the last week of August is shaping up to be a favorable and extremely effective time for you; you may even start to see on your own in a different way, when all that effort becomes working it. Maintain it up, you’re obtaining efficient it.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Lazy mid-days spent in the house are never a waste of time, particularly when you have a whole lot on your analytical mind, ruminating Aquarius. You are now in the mood to advance on a much deeper degree. The road in the direction of individual development is hard, yet you’re ready to lean right into makeover– particularly throughout the full moon on August 3rd and also on August 26th when the sunlight shifts right into Virgo. Bear in mind to go with the circulation, it’s all part of the holy strategy.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
As a result of the full moon on August 3rd, you will certainly be searching for the right way to reveal your views throughout the remainder of the month. If you’re lucky, a fellow fuzzy good friend or pet expert will come along to help you launch your inner voice and also reach its potential on the 8th or 26th. Bear in mind: Your voice issues, your voice counts, and a great deal of cats and pets can determine and also associate with you.

The Tradition of Father's Day
The Tradition of Father’s Day is the topic for today. It’s two weeks away for those of us here in the US.
But first, let me take a minute to say welcome to every new listener and welcome back to the veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by to listen to the FarmCast every week. I appreciate you all so much. I’m so excited to share with you what’s going on at the farm this week. And a fantastic recipe for grilling on Father’s Day.

Homestead Life Updates
Our homestead life is humming along. Yes, I’m still way behind on taming the weeds in the garden, the beans still need to be planted. And to top it off, harvesting is beginning. I’ve already picked green peas for shelling and snow peas. I froze four packages and had plenty left over for several meals. Now the shelling peas need to be picked again. This time there will be lots and lots and lots of them. I may freeze some and can some. We’ll see. Freezer space is at a premium right now. The potatoes are ready to be dug up and dried and I have plenty of spring onions available to add fresh to any dish.
Happy and good lamb news. We had a late arrival a few days ago. That brings our total to 10 lambs this year and zero loses. We’ve never had that kind of success rate. Mother nature usually has her way with at least one or two. We have been truly blessed this year.
The herd shares are going gangbusters. Only a couple of slots left there. And so many are interested in the cheese. During the summer we offer milk, yogurt, butter and cream, while winter will provide lots of cheese and butter. My schedule may change in that area due to the requests of the herd share owners. Many want the cheese now in lieu of the milk. Next month their wishes will become reality.
The quail are growing like crazy. Scott devised a way to alter their feeding trays so they don’t waste so much. That’s working out fine. The roosters are beginning to crow. It’s not a like a chicken at all. When I go and visit them and care for them, they are all standing in a row in front of the door looking out. They are so cute and funny.
Scott is moving along with the creamery walls. And that’s about it for the homestead updates. Let’s get to the topic of the day.
The Tradition of Father’s Day
Last month we looked at the tradition of Mother’s Day. Today we look at the tradition of Father’s Day. And more importantly, why children need fathers (or at the very least father-figures) in their lives. Today retailers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have completely changed the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was created to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities is now used as a marketing tool. Such is the way of life in our very affluent country.
Let’s take a look at the roots and history of Father’s Day.
The Religious Roots and Tradition
A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it is observed on March 19, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini ("Nourisher of the Lord") in Catholicism and "the putative father of Jesus" in southern European traditions. This celebration was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in many countries Father's Day is still celebrated on March 19. The Catholic Church actively supported the custom of a celebration of fatherhood on St. Joseph's day from either the last years of the 14th century or from the early 15th century.
The History of Father’s Day in the United States
Father's Day was not celebrated in the US, outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the US, it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting.
There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (Likely she would be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention).
Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June.
The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.
While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken.
In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.
It took a while, but we got there. Fathers are celebrated in our country every year on the 3rd Sunday in June.
Father’s Day Around the World
Other countries also picked up on the idea of Father’s Day. It is, after all, quite profitable. While many followed suit by celebrating it on the third Sunday in June, some decided to honor dad on different dates. So, to make sure you know when to pay your respects to dear old dad wherever you may be, here’s a list of the two most prominent dates and associated countries where Father’s Day is celebrated around the world.
March 19– The religious celebration, is observed in Angola, Belgium, Bolivia, Croatia, Honduras, Italy, Lichtenstein, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland.
Third Sunday in June– The US version, is also observed in Antigua, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Trinidad, Turkey, United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
A few made the list twice. Once for the religious celebration and the second for the secular celebration.
Why Fathers are Important in a Child’s Life
This is a topic I’m very interested in these days. In a time where men are often demonized at every turn for the smallest infraction, I feel the need to reiterate the facts and truth of the importance of men and father’s in the family. It is my opinion that way too many children are born today without a father’s loving presence. It has become common place for modern feminists to think they can “do it all” and they don’t need a man. It may be the biggest lie being perpetrated out there. I’ve spoken of this before and likely will again. It is detrimental to the health of women, their children and their relationships with the loving fathers of their children.
It’s simply ridiculous to think that the full-time job of parenting and a full-time job providing financial income can be done at the same time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do both simultaneously and do them well. The reason there was a separation of a wife and husband’s duties was not to somehow suppress the intelligence and creativity of women. Nope. It was simply the best arrangement for the best outcome of family cohesion and stability. There was never anything stopping women from having careers. In fact, many did have careers. It was a choice then and is still a choice now to be a wife and mother. And in today’s environment, having a career is still quite feasible after the little ones reach their teens and begin experimenting with adulthood. Moms will sometimes have lots more time to pursue whatever they desire.
The children are raised by someone else and jobs often become drudgery for working mothers today. According to an article a few years ago in the Huffington Post, woman are unhappier today than ever before. It’s no wonder. We have to make choices. No one can “do it all”. We all make choices. And sometimes the choice is simply a matter of timing. Kids now, career later. Do it all in a linear fashion as opposed to lumping it all into a limited 24-hour day.
The traditional family evolved over time and has sustained itself over time because it works. It works to ensure that society moves forward in an orderly fashion. Sure, there are all kinds of fancy family configurations in our world today and all have value. All families have value. Having said that, it does not change the scientifically proven fact that children do best in a stable household with both a father and a mother. The special family configurations seem to be getting all the attention these days, which is great. I’m just bringing a bit of attention back to our traditional family structure. It’s what this podcast is all about.
It is my opinion that the traditional family structure is being neglected and pushed aside. There are many reasons, but my current pet peeve is for the welfare state that encourages single motherhood and discourages fathers from being part of their children’s lives. Money and other resources are severely cut back if a man is present in the household. As I said, it encourages single motherhood. This makes the life of mother and children much more difficult than it would be with a man in the picture. But for many growing up in the second and third generation of welfare, they know no other life. They know no other way to survive. My heart goes out to them.
Anyone can father a child, but being a dad takes a lifetime. Fathers play a role in every child’s life that cannot be filled by others or state provided financial benefits. The role of the father can have a large impact on a child and help shape him or her into the person they become.
Fathers and Emotional Development
Fathers, just like mothers, are integral in the development of a child’s emotional well-being. Traditionally, children look to their fathers to lay down the rules and enforce them. They also look to their fathers to provide a feeling of physical and emotional security. Children naturally want to make their fathers proud. An involved father can promote inner strength and personal growth. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self-confidence. Fathers are important to your children’s emotional development.
Fathers Set the Bar for Relationships with Others
Fathers not only influence who we are inside, but how we have relationships with people as we grow. The way a father treats his child will influence what that child looks for in other people. Friends, lovers, and spouses will all be chosen based on how he or she perceived the meaning of the relationship with his or her father. The patterns a father sets in the relationships with his children will dictate how they relate to and interact with other people.
Fathers and Their Daughters
Young girls depend on their fathers for security and emotional support. A father shows his daughter what a good relationship with a man is like. If a father is loving and gentle, his daughter will look for those qualities in men when she’s old enough to begin dating. If a father is strong and valiant, she will relate closely to men of the same character.
Fathers and Their Sons
Unlike girls, who model their relationships with others based on their father’s character, boys will model themselves after their father’s character. Boys will seek approval from their fathers from a very young age. As human beings, we grow up and mature by imitating the behavior of those around us; that’s how we learn to function in the world. If a father is caring and treats people with respect, the young boy will grow up much the same. When a father is absent, young boys look to other male figures to set the “rules” for how to behave and survive in the world.
Enter social media and online father-figure personalities. Enter the gangs. Enter the unsavory characters that can lead naïve youngsters astray. Again, mothers need to be at home with their children and they need to have stable relationships with the father of their children. A two-parent household consisting of a man and a woman is the ideal situation. Fathers are just as important as mothers. The online community is filled with great people that can be role models. But why have a substitute? Why not continue the tradition that has worked for as long as there have been humans? Have we thought deeply about what we are leaving behind?
That online community is also filled with evil people who wish to do harm to others – often targeting children and young adults. The primary job of a parent, I would argue, is to protect our children – to keep them safe from harm. We need to be there for them. Fathers need to be there for them.
As you celebrate your father on the third Sunday of June, ask him to show you how to grill a delicious, grass-fed burger. Tell him you love him and how much you appreciate him.
Gourmet Grilled Chevon Burgers
This recipe calls for ground goat. It's a great alternative to the same old hamburger. Goat, or chevon as it is widely known, is a staple red meat for much of the world outside the US. However, you can use whatever ground meat you prefer. The instructions call for using a cast iron skillet with lots of butter or oil. However, the grill works just as well.
What you Need
1-pound goat burger, grass-fed is preferable
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
1 teaspoon rosemary leaves, dried
1 teaspoon thyme leaves, dried
1 teaspoon cilantro, dried
1 teaspoon cumin, ground
1 medium onion, chopped
6 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter, divided
Instructions
Place the goat-burger in a mixing bowl, add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, and cumin. Mix well.
In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over medium to high heat. Add the onion, lower the heat, and sauté for about 2 minutes until nicely browned and caramelized.
Add onions to burger mixture. Mix well. Shape into 4 patties.  In a cast iron skillet heat the remaining olive oil or butter over medium-to-high heat.
Cook the patties in oil or butter until medium to medium-well, about 8 - 10 minutes on each side.
Notes
NOTE 1: Don't skimp on the oil when using goat. Grass-fed chevon burger is very lean and needs the fat to help retain moisture and to prevent sticking.
NOTE 2: As an alternative, you can use your gas grill.
Final Thoughts
That’s it for today’s Peaceful Heart FarmCast. If you are keeping up with the activities on the homestead, let me know what questions you have about what we do and why.
As you move closer to the celebration of Father’s Day in a couple of weeks, why not contemplate why this structural tradition has been in place for as long as it has? And there is nothing better than smiling across the table at your dad while chomping on a delicious gourmet, grilled, grass-fed burger with all the trimmings.

Father’s Day this year turned into Father’s Weekend as we pre-functioned the holiday on Saturday and spent the middle of Sunday with my parents brunching at the Palisade Restaurant in Magnolia.
Now, traveling down to Magnolia is always a trip down memory lane... with present-day overlays: a condominium where Denny’s used to be; another condominium where Sunset Bowl used to be; a Safeway that taking up the entire block that used to be shared by Pay ‘n Save and Tradewell.
That’s Ballard, of course, right there at the intersection of 15th Avenue Northwest and Market Street. Once upon a time, it was to be a terminus of the Seattle Monorail Project traveling from West Seattle through its current run up Fifth Avenue and on to Ballard.
The project didn’t pan out... but, after all these years, Ballard is so, so, so, so... different. You start noticing it once you exit I-5 onto city streets.
My favorite approach to the city is over Holman Road. Right at the top of the hill, there, you notice the greening of arterials. I noticed this the first time traveling Holman to 15th all the way to the Magnolia Bridge. I really noticed it in Magnolia along Government Way and 34th Avenue West from Emerson to the tennis courts.
Tumblr media
Brunch at the Palisade was, of course, super fabulous, ever the classic experience.
Linzy and I completely indulged in the dessert area. She grabbed a burnt creme brullet whilst I grabbed one, too, and a cream puff I promptly dipped into the milk chocolate fountain and a ginormous strawberry that I doused in the white chocolate fountain.
Back at the table, dad realized he’d missed the entire dessert spread. So he headed down there post haste.
Kimmer wanted a burnt creme brulee of her own and, whilst the server went off to check the cook’s recipe for nuts or nut exposure, quickly forgot she wanted a burnt creme brulee of her own.
Only after we’d all gotten up from the table did she remember the creme brulee and ran off ahead of us to grab one and, you know, eat it... right there.
After we all wished each other our fare-thee-wells, Kimmer ‘n I walked Linzy to her car that was quite a way’s away.
We’d never been down this way before. It’s basically where West Marina Place dead ends. There’s a sign, then some trees that block the view. Clearly, though, you can see a path.
Out of curiosity, we stepped out onto the path, quickly revealing the view below of low tide.
Now the trail on the right, the one on which we’re actually standing, doesn’t go much farther than you see in the photograph. I’m pretty sure it ends with either steps or a rocky slope down to the beach. Beyond that, after more trees and beach, is the row of houses that line Galer Street... itself the tail end of 32nd Avenue West that cuts through most of Magnolia from north to south.
Standing here, though, I’m thinking I’m maybe looking at Perkins Lane. And that thought immediately triggers a useless piece of knowledge: there are maps that actually show streets where there is now water. In June, 2018, there are two streets lining Elliot Bay on the south shores of Magnolia. They are West Galer Street... and Perkins Lane.
South of those two streets?
Nothing but water.
Tumblr media
Okay so just scroll down below the maps if a little Magnolia history falls outside your interests.
As for the rest of you, yes, there are maps from the 1920s and 1950s showing at least two streets basically in Elliott Bay. The 1920s map even shows five or six streets off the beach to the south of Discovery Park.
On the 1920s map, the two streets to which I refer are identified as Puget Avenue and Logan Avenue. In the 1950s, they’re identified as Beach Lane and Lee Street. Not sure if we’re talking about the save pavement between those decades, but it’s hard to imagine we’re not.
Of course, speaking of hard to imagine, why would Rand McNally and Company (1924) or the Shell Oil Company (1956) record roads that never existed?
Seriously. They were never built.
Yeah.
No idea.
But to me, it’s always been a lovely mystery. Something to indulge whenever the thought arises. In this case, all these thoughts and subsequent research were triggered by the one view above.
Crazy how that works.
Tumblr media
Just as frame of reference, the Google Map above shows Perkins Lane as the southernmost street facing the beach. Magnolia Boulevard actually sits atop the bluff.
Anyway.
If you’d like a clean, high resolution look at my temporary obsession, click here. The link takes you to Old Maps Online. Click on the red “Browse The Old Maps” button and a column of map thumbnails will appear along the right side of the screen.
So Kimmer ‘n I backtrack along the path and I see a cow.
No kidding.
A cow.
Immediately I whip out my 35mm and take some photos. Because yes. I saw a cow... floating out there on Elliott Bay under a hot, hot sun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted proof, see.
‘Cause a giant cow floating on Elliott Bay does not, in fact happen every day.
The story of The Cow... is something you’ll find here.
Otherwise, take a peek at this timelapse showing part of its journey...
youtube
After the cow, we jumped back into our car and up I-5 to Lynnwood.
Deciding to kill a little shopping at our local Value Village, we parked... then decided to take advantage of the car’s sunroof as we turned Kimmer’s bug into an impromptu photo booth. You can see the sunroof in my lens at the upper right corner of each picture...
Tumblr media
The rest of the day was pretty chill. Hanging out. Desserts. Binge-watching more Last Man Standing.
It was a lovely end to a lovely Father’s Day weekend that was itself a lovely end to a pretty packed week.
Earlier in the day, back when we were at Value Village, I snapped a couple photos that captured an entire week focused on celebration and great eats.
It’s amazing how all of that worked out without, you know, planning it.
Marriage Pro Tip: You get a ton of bang for your buck when you know just how to improvise on your feet.

Falta Ocho Semanas...
Hey everyone. We’re now in the last days of May and I am sitting anticipating my final weeks of teaching and of living in La Union. When people told me this year would fly by, I definitely didn’t realise that it actually *would* fly by so I probably should’ve listened to them... I realise it’s been quite a while since I wrote one of these, so I’ll pick up from where I left off. March was a typical month here in La Union - teaching in the daytime, and praying for there to be water in my house in the nighttime. Although La Union usually has a temperate climate because we’re at such altitude, we’re currently in the hottest months here, with it having reached 36-37 degrees some afternoons. A ‘difficult afternoon’ is given a new meaning after having tried to motivate both myself and 24 seven-year-olds to work all afternoon when really we all just want to be outside laying in the shade of a palm tree. April was a highly anticipated month in La Union (for all volunteers, actually) with it containing Semana Santa (Easter Holidays). From April 8th-16th, I took a trip down to Nicaragua with my boyfriend, Tom, who came from the UK to visit me. Props to him for flying halfway across the world to see me, I must be pretty special, eh? Anyway, all immodesty aside, Semana Santa was wonderful - after a brief 15 hour bus journey, we first arrived in Managua, Nicaragua’s capital, then took a short taxi ride to arrive in our first destination, the beautiful colonial city of Granada. With immaculate streets and some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever seen, it was the perfect place to spend a couple of days wandering the streets and learning to take into account that Tom hadn’t had 8 previous months of acclimatising to the Central American heat like I’d had so he was struggling a little in that respect. We then went to a volcano crater lagoon, called Laguna de Apoyo. It was idyllic and the nicest place to relax after such a long term at school. Before heading back to Honduras and to our respective destinations of La Union and Bristol, we went to Treehouse, a hostel built into the side of Volcano Mombacho, in the middle of the jungle. It was easily one of the best weeks of my life, Nicaragua is an incredible country and I cannot wait to be going back very soon! After Semana Santa, every teacher told me to really appreciate my time here in La Union because the time seems to just disintegrate into thin air in a whirl of teaching and grading. I can confirm this is absolutely true. The 3rd partial (term) has already been and gone, along with the 3rd and final set of parent-teacher conferences. Since coming back from Semana Santa, every teacher has been trying to ensure they’re going to get through all the material they need to in their classes and the 12th graders are preparing for their graduation ceremony on June 15th. Slightly disappointed that we didn’t get such a grand ceremony in the UK when we left sixth form but I guess I’ll just have to struggle on without. For those of you who aren’t Spanish speakers and thus didn’t grasp it in the slightly pretentious title of this blog, I’ve only got 8 weeks to the day until I arrive back in the UK. This week and the next are my final two weeks of teaching (I’m unsure as to how much ‘teaching’ will actually take place, I feel it’ll instead involve me desperately hugging my students to numb the pain of knowing I have to leave them). Afterwards, I will stay in La Union for another week organising grades and my house, as well as packing everything for travelling. After graduation, I will be leaving on June 16th to embark upon a 7 week journey around Central America with some other volunteers before we all fly back to the homeland on July 29th. I am unbelievably excited to start travelling, although it’s a undoubtedly a bittersweet form of excitement as the thought of leaving my kids and my friends here in La Union, a place I’ve grown to call ‘home’, sends me into a bit of a frenzy. Having said that, I know that I am extremely grateful to have made the friendships I have here in La Union, and in reality it’s a good thing that I am so torn about leaving as it proves I’ve really found a place for myself here. Tomorrow is El Dia Del Arbol (The Day of the Tree / Arbor Day) so we’re having a parade in town to celebrate it, and this Friday we’re taking the kids on a ‘field day’ to a nearby aldea (village) which will literally involve them spending the day in a field… so I guess that’s where a field day got its name from? I will update with pictures etc soon as I have a MONTON (as they would say in La Union) and the kids are so cute that it’s only fair that you guys see them too. Ps. Don’t forget to vote on June 8th. Pps. Vote Labour. Siob xox
