Also @katajainen 's post about the nazgûl being persistence hunters adds a fun (painful) layer to the fact that once Frodo is stabbed at Weathertop, he is marked.

Everything else that happens on the quest together combines to cement his fate of course, but (to my mind) it's this wound that summarizes them all, and sends him over the Sea.

He was spared being a thrall to Sauron, but in a way the nazgûl still got him in the end.

“One of the scenes that left a great impression on me was SMZ’s fight against BCF. Because actually my eye had been punctured. I just want to say first- it wasn’t Yuning’s fault; actually it was a product of my own request. I wanted there to be even closer contact- so the fight looked more real. But during one of the takes my eye was hit- I was hurt, but I’m used to finishing off the scene first. I’ll have to treat this eye better in the future. I was filming a different drama before and was too serious about it- it was a modern drama. I took the fire extinguisher and it hit (something) with it, but it rebound and I hit myself- the whole eye was swollen. But this time it was actually punctured. It might look fine, maybe just a little red?

But I’m used to finishing off the take first, so we did that before I went to the hospital, in full wardrobe. I went and they propped the eye open to take a look at it, and the doctor said, “The eye is punctured. You’ll need a few stitches.” I wasn’t afraid of the stitches, because if it needed to be done, it needed to be done. But I was more worried about getting the drama finished. I was sitting there, not saying a thing. But the doctor- she was a woman- said, “Alright, let’s take another look.” So they propped my eye open again. She said, “It’s alright. It’s not quite 2cm (long? deep?); you don’t need the stitches.” /sigh of relief/ “But you should have a shot of antibiotics.” I said, “Ok, ok! Where will it be administered?” “In the butt. Take your pants off.”

I was thinking “in the butt”?? I was still in wardrobe, and I asked her if I could have it in the arm. She said, “Nope.” In that case, I chose not to get the shot. Just a disclaimer! That’s was the incorrect thing to do. The doctor said, “You don’t want it? Ok, fine. If it gets infected later there’ll be no saving it. Here are your discharge papers, sign them.” I signed, and I didn’t get the shot. But after a few days I regretted it and went back to get the shot.”
