I was thinking I'd probably see one of you! You're wrong :) Let's review the history a bit, shall we?

In this case, what we're talking about is the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, or in English, The Institute of Sexology. This Institute was founded and headed by a gay Jewish sexologist named Magnus Hirschfeld. It was founded in July of 1919 as the first sexology research clinic in the world, and was run as a private, non-profit clinic. Hirschfeld and the researchers who worked there would give out consultations, medical advice, and even treatments for free to their poorer clientele, as well as give thousands of lectures and build a unique library full of books on gender, sexuality, and eroticism. Of course, being a gay man, Hirschfeld focused a lot on the gay community and proving that homosexuality was natural and could not be "cured".

Hirschfeld was unique in his time because he believed that nobody's gender was either one or the other. Rather, he contended that everyone is a mixture of both male and female, with every individual having their own unique mix of traits.

This leads into the Institute's work with transgender patients. Hirschfeld was actually the one to coin the term "transsexual" in 1923, though this word didn't become popular phrasing until 30 years later when Harry Benjamin began expanding his research (I'll just be shortening it to trans for this brief overview.) For the Institute, their revolutionary work with gay men eventually began to attract other members of the LGBTA+, including of course trans people.

Contrary to what Anon says, sex reassignment surgery was first tested in 1912. It'd already being used on humans throughout Europe during the 1920's by the time a doctor at the Institute named Ludwig Levy-Lenz began performing it on patients in 1931. Hirschfeld was at first opposed, but he came around quickly because it lowered the rate of suicide among their trans patients. Not only was reassignment performed at the Institute, but both facial feminization and facial masculization surgery were also done.

The Institute employed some of these patients, gave them therapy to help with other issues, even gave some of the mentioned surgeries for free to this who could not afford it! They spoke out on their behalf to the public, even getting Berlin police to help them create "transvestite passes" to allow people to dress however they wanted without the threat of being arrested. They worked together to fight the law, including trying to strike down Paragraph 175, which made it illegal to be homosexual. The picture below is from their holiday party, Magnus Hirschfeld being the gentleman on the right with the fabulous mustache. Many of the other people in this photo are transgender.

There was always push back against the Institute, especially from conservatives who saw all of this as a bad thing. But conservatism can't stop progress without destroying it. They weren't willing to go that far for a good while. It all ended in March of 1933, when a new Chancellor was elected. The Nazis did not like homosexuals for several reasons. Chief among them, we break the boundaries of "normal" society. Shortly after the election, on May 6th, the book burnings began. The Jewish, gay, and obviously liberal Magnus Hirschfeld and his library of boundary-breaking literature was one of the very first targets. Thankfully, Hirschfeld was spared by virtue of being in Paris at the time (he would die in 1935, before the Nazis were able to invade France). His library wasn't so lucky.

This famous picture of the book burnings was taken after the Institute of Sexology had been raided. That's their books. Literature on so much about sexuality, eroticism, and gender, yes including their new work on trans people. This is the trans community's Alexandria. We're incredibly lucky that enough of it survived for Harry Benjamin and everyone who came after him was able to build on the Institute's work.

As the Holocaust went on, the homosexuals of Germany became a targeted group. This did include transgender people, no matter what you say. To deny this reality is Holocaust denial. JK Rowling and everyone else who tries to pretend like this isn't reality is participating in that evil. You're agreeing with the Nazis.

i get why people would opt to say walter was a terrible person since the beginning, but i think that's like, the most boring takeaway you can get about his character. he was already insecure and prideful from the start, and it's what would hurt him and keep hurting him. but like, being insecure and prideful are regular traits any regular person can have. the actions that he makes because of these traits, which in turn keep fueling his ego more and more, are what makes him an interesting character. and he was already pretty capable of hurting other people, but he wasn't doing it out of malice, but more because of careless selfishness at first. what makes walter terrifying is that the more he does it, the more he becomes aware of what he's doing, and the more he keeps going and keeps being more and more meticulous and deliberate about what he does that hurts people and even to the point when it was specifically to hurt people.

i think the traits were there in walter from the beginning—the pilot did a pretty good job of establishing how powerless he's felt all his life and just how susceptible he is to letting this newfound perceived power get to his head so easily. he even says this explicitly in 5x06 "Buyout" when he tells jesse "i'm not in the money business, i'm in the empire business". but saying he was this monster from the start kind of implies he didn't undergo through a character arc throughout the show when it's quite literally what he did. he got worse. so much worse. through mostly the fault of his own fragility.

#idk if i put it into words right but i'm just musing #was walter a good person when brba started? up in the air. but his family genuinely adored him. despite feeling like a loser teacher #some of his coworkers actually really liked and respected him. he was just as much of a regular person as anyone else was tbh #you know it's interesting that he and gale basically have the same motivations. why jump to meth of all things. why go from 0 to 100 when #it sounds COMPLETELY ridiculous. but they were both very passionate about chemistry who felt like their potentials were wasted and felt #like they were finally putting their skills to good use again. getting to flex their muscles and shit. whenever they cook better purer meth #than most other people. i think it's a really genius idea to have this premise for the show lol #cz as much as walter is motivated by him feeling like he desperately has to take control of his own life he also is a scientist at heart #who desperately needs to apply his knowledge and skills somewhere where it would feel gratifying #seriously dude you could've tried to get a paper published or two or something. djhdidhd #but the academe has its own Politics and whatnot. so one could only speculate why walt didn't get to pursue that any more #(aside from the whole grey matter industries thing) #anyway uhhh i hope i get the post across lol not to sound cheesy cliche but brba is a corruption slash character deterioration arc #quite literally the whole point is that he Didn't Start Off Like This And He Gets Worse #again. he already had some of his bad tendencies and traits but it's like. we all do that's not necessarily inherently make or break #it's what he DOES and KEEPS DOING. i started all of these games at wildly different times, took varying levels of breaks partway through each of them, and then finished all of their achievements in the same two days

#buenos dias short people #tunic was like. i played to maybe halfway. took a months long break #when i picked it back up i didnt remember what i was doing so i started a new file and played like a third #months long break. but this time i resumed the second file and played through to the end #the game is very cryptic but starting over gave me a handle on the mechanics and what was important #outer wilds took like four tries even though i knew it would be good i just wasnt hooked #the game is about knowledge even more than tunic like knowledge is the whole deal and it comes slowly at first #but when it hit it really hit. god damn #please play outer wilds #spyro? um. it was good #i don't know that i took any big breaks from it? there were some but a couple weeks at most #spyro levels are not particularly complex. or content rich. and i really felt that 60 hours #playing the whole trilogy all back to back can really burn you out #its a collectathon you're bound to spend a good while just wandering around to find that one last thing you missed #and i didn't know i could left stick for sparx to point out the nearest gems until like halfway through 2 so that was a time waster #im not saying it wasn't a good game but spyros moveset is like. glide fire charge and you do this for three games #until they throw in random nonspyro playable characters in 3 and they all control really bad and weird. but its still mostly spyro #i could have taken big breaks between each game and it would've been better probably but its a collection im gonna roll to the next one

im not excited for pokemon z because i have zero faith in gamefreak, as we all should at this point, but i do hope it is good. i do hope it’s another chance for kalos to really wow people. i remember getting Y back when it came out, and it was. Fine. the most Fine pokemon game i’ve ever played, then and now. it had the unfortunate fate of being a follow up to black/white 2 (some of the best pokemon games ever made) and being the mainline transition to 3D (something they’re still struggling with tbh.) they suffer a lot from those growing pains, a lot of x/y feels underdeveloped or bland. but i really hope this game gives the region new life because all the pieces were there.

I have no idea about inches and all that #The individuals in this image are (as seen in the file name) male which can be seen in their blue color; in general they are silvery white #(with in general I mean outside the mating season; the female fish are silver all the time iirc) #They are endangered and only live in one place which is also where they were discovered around 1830? or 1890...or 1930? I hate numbers :( #it's one of those I'm sure #That place would be a limestone basin above a warm water source called the Devils hole (hence the name of the fish) #That water source is located 15m underneath the ground and the basin above it is about as big as a small room I'd say #People have tried to grow the population artifically but it failed which is tragic since the population in that basin is still declining #as far as I know at least; it's possible I missed something and it went back up again but last I knew there were like only... 110 of them? #This is because of a pump station located very closely to this Devil's hole (can you see I find that name is amusing?) #is stopping the water in that basin from rising; and therefore endangering the habitat of these fish #The close by Hover Damn is also responsible for this and researching this I did not expect this name to pop up #Fallout New Vegas follows me everywhere it would seem #And also!
