You know what I love about the Doctor Who fandom, it's how much the show changed its fan's lives. On every video I see on YouTube and Tiktok, and on every story and post I see on Tumblr, Pintrest, Ao3, etc. There are fan's talking about how the Doctor and their companions and their adventures changed their life. I'll see those talk about how the Doctor taught them to live. There may be discourse as to whose the best Doctor, whether it's Tom Baker's Fourth, John Hurt's War, Patrick Troughton's Second, David Tennant's Tenth, or Christopher Eccleston's Ninth. If there's one thing that each and every Doctor and their companions have done is change the lives of the fans.

i think so much about amy in the beast below learning the truth of the situation and immediately trying to spare the doctor that knowledge. making herself forget it and telling herself to get him away from there. trying to take away that choice, but also the inevitable pain that will come with it. that even this early, she knows the doctor well enough that if he knew what was happening here, he wouldn’t be able to keep himself from interfering, from doing something terrible trying to preserve as much as he could.

and then i also think about how the episode starts with eleven catching onto something being wrong because he notices a child crying, but amy only prevents him from killing a beautiful, irreplaceable creature by noticing that there are children laughing, too, being loved and being helped.

the doctor tells her she had no right to choose for him, but if he shut her out entirely, he would have missed how he could save everyone… They could only get this far together…

got really into painting fungus textures this week so I figured I'd do my wizard's (incomplete) family tree and uh, went a little overboard. it's fine it's what they deserve!

Eleventh Doctor Chronicles: Sins of the Flesh is really good. Really really good. Experience with certain attitudes can be so isolating, surrounded by people who won’t bother to understand the impact of growing up in that environment (because the world's so progressive now, right), and so — I'm so glad it exists. I also liked the discussion in the interview commentary about how being a monster and doing monstrous things are not mutually exclusive. Like most things, homophobia is pervasive because it is structural. Religious fervor is not inherently bad — “your god is love,” Valarie says to Lily — but as soon as hellfire is brandished around, it's used routinely to empower monstrous things, in a way that becomes unsafe to debate. Especially for young & dependent people who can't escape it.

Conditional love. Moral panics. Purity culture. Self-hate. Mob mentality. This audio. It's timely.

I appreciated what they said in the interviews about not only about the research, but the four rounds of sensitivity readings. I wish the TV show had that level of care sometimes…

the 10th doctor kissed a male zygon on the mouth in the 50th anniversary. the 14th doctor called isaac newton hot in the 60th anniversary. you think david tennant will do something gay as the Doctor for the show's 70th anniversary

ok not to be like no fun allowed but 10 does NOT count for this at ALL bc 1) the zygon in question was disguised as a woman at the time and i cant even find evidence for that particular zygon being male (NOT saying you're lying, i'd just like to see what your evidence is). and 2) he is by appearances easily the straightest doctor in that he kissed 8 different women onscreen (BY FAR the most of any modern who / torchwood / sja / class character!!! and in fact he is the ONE single character who kisses 5+ different people who does not kiss people of both binary genders) and ZERO men and never said or did anything truly explicit unlike every other modern who doctor. and like when i say that please keep in mind that i am talking about a FICTIONAL CHARACTER which is different from a real person. if a character only does lowkey things that can be waved away by the audience yes they might be queer from a queer fan's perspective but how a queerphobic cishet person is going to receive them is very different.

that said i do think david tennant would do that yes

Okay, I saw someone say that Nimona, while being good representation, “didn’t take the big step forward in queer rep that everyone says it did”.

That is wrong. So wrong, my dude.

Yes, an explicit and open queer relationship in children’s cartoons is not new, per ce. Hell, just this year, two popular kids’ cartoons had the main character in an open, adorable, plot-based queer romance. But this is different for a few reasons.

Reason number one, it isn’t left in suspense. Yes, they had that split for three odd weeks, but they started the film as a couple. One of the very first scenes is them together as a couple, Ambrosius saying he loves Ballister, them holding hands, Ballister leaning on Ambrosius’ shoulder. Ambrosius says he loves Ballister three times during the film, and none of them are any more than halfway in. It’s very clear, from their very first interaction, that they are an established relationship, which isn’t something I’ve seen...at all in other animation.

Secondly, they are the plot. Ambrosius not believing Ballister, Ambrosius cutting off Ballister’s arm, Ballister trying to get the video to Ambrosius - this is what drives the plot. In any other children’s animation with queer relationships, the relationship is not the main focus. Even The Owl House, which is so amazing with its constant representation, would still make sense if Luz and Amity never happened. But Nimona’s plot wouldn’t make sense without Ballister and Ambrosius’ relationship. It, quite simply, can’t be erased. It could work as a friendship, yes, but that’s the point. They could have just been two close friends that fell on opposite sides of a fight, but they weren’t. They were two lovers that fell on opposite sides of a fight.

Thirdly, they aren’t sanitized for “family viewing”. An emerging trend in children’s animation is to only have mlm relationships as fathers to make them seem more “family friendly”. With the exception of Kipo, there really isn’t many tv shows or films that places light upon an mlm relationship. And if it does, it'll be a teen relationship because teenagers being queer tends to come across as less “dirty” and more “innocent”. But Goldenheart is none of these things. They are adults without the mollifying aspect of having a family. And on top of that, they fight. They wield swords and they get bloody and they shoot at things and get angry and yell. They aren’t “clean” and “innocent”.

As well as this, they are in a film. Films are far more accessible than tv shows. You have to watch twenty seven episodes before Lumity in toh is canon. Troy kisses Benson on the eleventh episode of Kipo. And there are two hundred and eighty three episodes of Adventure Time before Marceline and Bonnie kiss. But with a film, the queerness is much more forward - especially in Nimona, where it’s literally the second scene. Animated films hardly ever display queer relationships, but Nimona did.

Finally - they aren’t perfect. I don’t know about you, but three weeks of thinking your boyfriend/maybe ex is a murderer? Doesn’t sound like a healthy few weeks to me. I have only seen big relationship arguments portrayed in straight relationships in cartoons - think Star Vs The Forces Of Evil - whereas queer relationships either have the massive fight prior to being canonically gay - She Ra - or have conflict, not arguments, that are dealt with quickly - Dead End/The Owl House. But Goldenheart? Goldenheart suffers. Their relationship is pushed to such extreme boundaries as for them to be pretty much exes throughout most of the movie. And yet, they are clearly healthy, happy and very much in love at the end.

TL;DR - Nimona is amazing with the queer representation, and it is a milestone for LGBTQ+ cartoons. Not only is the relationship romantic for the entire movie, the plot is driven by Ambrosius and Ballister’s sort-of-break-up. In short, they are treated the same way straight people are. They have flaws, they have massive arguments, they have plot importance, they have backstory. They are in love. And that’s what matters more than anything else.

He is directly looking at the fan from before, his head on top of them. The fan still has the microphone poiting in David's direction. A new spotlight is shining in on both of them. David says, "SWEET"

Eleventh panel: A close up shot of the crowd. The camera lies a little ways below David's head, only the bottom of it is visible. We see that the fan with the microphone is crouched and almost completely tilted back. The fan is looking directly at Jenkins. The crowd continues squished together, watching intently with shocked faces. David continues, saying "YOU"

Thirteenth panel: The shot is arranged in the same way as in the previous panel. David continues, saying "SLUTS". The letters are written in an emboldened font. The crowd is completely shocked, but also weirdly flattered, all of them are blushing.
