SAM AND MAX MERMAID AU1!!11!1!!!1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok this is an au ive been wokring on for a while now and im so so so excited to talk about it
SO obv this is like a mermaid au, i have more for it (like sybil granny ruth n papierwaite but this is the art i have 4 now) bc i love love LOVE mermaids!1!!!1 (i made sam and max mermaid pride art but i loved it so much i turned that /j into /srs) SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
So Sam and Max met at little guppies, like how they met in canon but in the sea, and after Max hospitalized Samʼs bullies with his natural toxins, he and Sam became best friends 4ever. Sam and Max lived in the outskirts of the biggest city in the merfolk kingdom, Samʼs parents left Sam when he was still an egg with Granny Ruth, who is one of the kingdomʼs fiercest n most respected warriors, to move to colder waters in Alaska, where Samʼs family partially originated from. So Sam was raised by Ruth, when Sam was just hatched, his grandfather Leo had died fighting against the humans to protect the kingdom. Max came from a family with loads and loads of kids, (some of which had been either kidnapped or eaten by predators :( ), and probably not a very good home life, so he hung out at Ruthʼs cave with Sam almost every night. As Sam and Max grew up, so did their love for one another. Once they were old enough they moved closer to the shore, where they take up cases for fun, and make sure humans dont get too close. They obviously got married as soon as they could, and spend their time adventuring and scavenging. Occasionaly they will go to human markets, selling fish theyve hunted for money to buy cool weapons and food, but otherwise they like to mess around with pirates and ships. They also like to hang out and have lunch with their friends who claim to be human, Papierwaite and his adopted child Sammun-Mak, who run a museum and live on the edge of the shore, easy access and all.
One day, while exploring a cool shipwreck, they found a little egg, Max, instantly infatuated by it, begged Sam to take it home, so they did. Eventually that egg hatched and they had a kid of their own :) (GEEK!!!) Max unfortunately wasnt allowed to touch her, as he might poison her. Though their baby was always ill and burned so easily, even though Max hadnt touched her! always squinting and shocking them. Confused, they went to Granny Ruth for help. under further investigation they deducted that their baby was an electric eel! Which usually live in freshwater, so she was extra fragile. Though as she got older, she grew stronger, and shockingly smarter, always researching and making devices.
Theyre a very silly family
I KNOW IM GONNA ADD MORE TO THE AU BUT THIS IS WHAT I GOT SO FAR

fic masterpost
yeah i do have other marvel fics on my ao3 but some of them i wrote in high school also some of them i don't vibe with anymore
note that some of these are from a while ago! my perceptions and takes on characters change and grow, so if i wrote something, sometimes i won't agree with the characterization later. keep that in mind.
on that note: many of the old fics name Xuân as Xuyen, bc that was the fanmade actually-Vietnamese alternative to Xi'an before her name was changed in canon.
Family Colors (2018): 1,679 words. Standalone (there used to be a second chapter but I didn't like it so I got rid of it). Gen, Kamala-centric, Civil War II era. To whom do the Captain Marvel colors belong?
cloudburst (2019): 423 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. ever wake up to a thunderstorm?
Retail Therapy (2020): 1,209 words. Standalone. James Proudstar/Terry Cassidy. Early-krakoa era -- I wrote this just a bit after krakoa became A Thing, when we didn't know what had recently happened with more minor characters like terry. also i think they're very cute.
Morning Song (2020): 955 words. Standalone. James Proudstar/Terry Cassidy. idk I think Jimmy would like cooking.
if you don't mind me saying so (i love you) (2020): 25,423 words. Part 1 of "love like fools." Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. my funny little fake dating indulgence. the epitome of "I wrote it for me but you can read it if you want" (as so many of my works are). i haven't actually reread this one i have no idea if it's good or not. but it sure exists.
Days Off (2020): 1,523 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Sam wakes up sick and Roberto tries to help.
sunlight (2020): 2,090 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Seasonal affective disorder strikes Roberto.
the whole 'not being dead' thing (2020): 1,094 words. Standalone. Gen. Early-krakoa era. Jay is resurrected and catches up with his new nephew.
Winner Takes All (2020): 2,006 words. Two chapters (so far. might fuck around and add another chapter idk). Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Utopia-era. sparring and unsaid feelings and also Doug's new ability to read body language.
i don't want to spend my life (without your kiss goodnight) (2020): 1,702 words. Rated M for non-explicit making out. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. the world has not ended so obviously let's party
my home in you (2020): 2,122 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. patching up the other's wounds.
The Meaning of Family (2021): 10,926 words. Standalone. Gen. Ruth-centric. Ruth bonds with her family -- because she does have family, and no x man is truly ever alone. Also, possibly, she might kill someone in the future.
live our life like we know we could (ONGOING/HIATUS): 22,300 words. Part 2 of "love like fools." Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Post mission, post reveal, navigating uncharted relationship waters.
in the name of the moon! (2022): 4,382 words. Standalone. Gen (though it's tagged as Sam/Roberto, and you can certainly read it like that if you want, but that's not the focus). Sam textile artist real To Me. also: halloween and sailor moon.
i mean every word i say (2023): 1,559 words. Rated T for mention of sex. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Sam's been keeping secrets, and that makes Roberto nervous.
we will never be forgotten (2023): 2,689 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Roberto gets mindwiped, knocked out, and a visitor in the infirmary (in that order).
you're never gonna get a second take (2023): 2,166 words. Standalone. Dani Moonstar/Xuân Cao Mạnh. don't you just love those undercover missions where they have to dress in fancy clothes? yeah so does xuân
nothing holds me back at all (2023): 1,461 words. Part 1 of "the memories that make us." Gen. Dani-centric. Dani rides a horse for the first time (with her father's help).
you can never take this part of me (2023): 1,691 words. Part 2 of "the memories that make us." Gen. Sam-centric. Sam goes fishing with his dad and his gaggle of younger siblings.
~~~
works in progress (that I'm posting to hold myself accountable so I actually finish them someday):
- the rest of "the memories that make us" (i.e. the other 13 parts, one for each of the original nine and the six academy x era students. all of it is me practicing writing kids)
- king/lionheart Sam/Roberto medieval au. even tho I hate royalty the aesthetics kind of slam
- megafic (62 chapters planned! six tie ins! almost fully canon compliant all the way up to war of realms!) the ties that bind & related works wrt the better endings au
- rewriting document of high school fics (mostly samberto. I'm more or less a one trick pony)
- several shorter smaller things that I just have to work up the courage to post (including practice with NSFW writing)
- not a fanfiction: but my long ass academic paper (fully cited) that talks about the mutant metaphor and the actual minorities within the x men and my huge large spreadsheet that goes with it.
been letting my thoughts percolate on the Barbie film since I saw it over the weekend and: for one, I want to clarify that I had a lot of fun watching it. and for another, I am critiquing it because this is how I engage with movies I’m trying to actually think about. Complaining is my love language. The Barbie movie is funny and it also takes itself seriously and tries to establish that it’s making a Point, so I am also taking it seriously and evaluating it as such. Also this post is gonna be a total mess bc it’s just me tangenting over and over. Uh. Okay now that I’ve written it out it’s long as all fuck lemme add a readmore.
the way they handled Sasha from a costuming perspective bothered me. She’s introed to us dressed in all black tee and jeans, and over the course of the movie she undergoes Barbiefication with her top becoming a deep maroon and eventually ending the movie in a bright pink dress, which I should add is if anything even *more* girly than the pink pantsuit her mother Gloria ends up with. In this way, the film conveys her rejection of Barbie as not just a lack of connection with her mother, but as a disconnect from *her own* femininity which it implies she’s distances herself from because she thinks it’s shameful to be what the world thinks a woman is. Did they have to do that? We see other Barbies who don’t wear pink but manage to convey a very slick, costumey version of their job and I would not have minded seeing a camp Goth Social Justice Barbie costume by the end of the film.
but I think the thing that sticks in my craw the most is how Sasha’s Barbie Takedown Speech (which is supposed to be a mirror to Gloria’s Contradictory Womanhood Speech*) is grounded in real criticisms people have of Barbie, which is blunted by the fact that Barbieland as shown in the movie is explicitly more diverse than Barbie is now. The comment Sasha makes about body image issues to Stereo Barbie is supposed to be seen as clearly ridiculous once she goes to Barbieland and meets Barbies of all body types including fat ones, when I know for a fact that at present the “curvy” Barbie body type on the market is like at BEST someone on the edge between midsize and plus. And that was introduced alongside the petite and tall makes like…I think less than a decade ago?
it’s also the fact that Stereo Barbie is metatextually both an individual doll and the representation of Barbie as a collective. She defends herself to Sasha by citing the other Barbie’s’ accomplishments because for her they are all inseparable and almost interchangeable. In theory this is how every Barbie works, but by having Margot Robbie (“Stereotypical Barbie”) be the one to go out into Los Angeles and get Velveteen Rabbitted into being real by the Ghost Mother-God of Ruth Handler** it also sets an interesting tone for Sasha’s critique because she’s not just yelling at some white woman, she’s yelling at a white woman who represents a collective of Barbies that are more diverse than she is and also critically less Real than she is.***
also I know the part where Sasha calls Barbie a fascist is supposed to be funny bc it’s a very Teen Angry thing to say to someone you disagree with but. I mean lol she goes back to Barbieland to find that the Kendom**** has taken over and then goes “we must return everything back to our Ideal Past where the Kens were merely decorative and to do this we must hatch a plot to prevent them from voting” lmao. Obviously after that she has the conversation with Ken and they have the briefest scene going “maybe we should all be equal and individual” but WILD thing to see after the fascist line. Also uh. Sentiment is cool and all but where actually do the Kens live. Are they back to being homeless.
*hey how come hearing about how womanhood is multifaceted and contradictory deprograms the Barbies from patriarchal Ken conditioning…into agreeing with one another completely? None of the Barbies were like “hey I meant it I liked taking a Brain Vacation where I didn’t need to bear the load of decision making?” None of them were like “What the Ken’s did was wrong but maybe we can talk to them the same way you’ve talked to us to make them understand this hurts them?” None of them were like “love y’all but I am not sitting through 4 hours of guitar to turn my friends Ken against each other through making them jealous?” No??? Women are complex and contain multitudes but those multitudes all align? Or am I supposed to accept that they all agree because even after exposure to both patriarchy and the “antidote” of feminism they are still insufficiently Real to think complexly?
**also given the opening of Barbie mentioning that she was groundbreaking because she was a doll that represented an aspirational adult woman so girls were no longer consigned to motherhood it is VERY interesting that they had her introduce herself at the end of the film as Barbara Handler***** rather than her canonical name of Barbara Rogers, thereby cementing herself as Ruth’s daughter. Why frame Ruth as the mother to her creation just because she named the doll after her real-life child? Why not emphasize that she, too, broke the mold of motherhood by becoming a businesswomen and creative entrepreneur? Like cool cool get a pithy jab in about the double mastectomy and the tax fraud but why not engage more deeply with her as a businesswoman given that the film’s opening volley is that women are capable of being things other than mothers?
***and they’re less Real in more ways than one! If you look at posts showing which doll each Barbie represents, you will see that many of the women of color are either playing a racebent version of an existing doll, are an amalgam of other doll concepts, or are created from whole cloth. Again, Sasha’s speech is grounded in real-life critiques of Barbie, but the film’s more diverse casting undermines that speech because in *this* universe Barbie is less of a tool of white hegemony. Did you know that besides the red-sareed doll from the Dolls of the World collection, we didn’t see an Indian Barbie until *last year?* If you were going off the impressions of the movie you might not have known that!
****also I get that it’s supposed to be a twist that the enemies aren’t the Mattel executives; it’s Ken learning about patriarchy and bringing it back to Barbieland. And we’re supposed to be like “oh cool Will Farrell’s character genuinely cares about inspiring little kids with Barbie!” but it *does* leave the issue of the boardroom being maidenless still very much there which I guess is solved by…they have the ghost of Ruth Handler there? …I guess this is one of those lines you’re not allowed to fully cross if you’re making a movie approved by Mattel?
*****yep I get the joke to the ending line and it’s funny in the moment but now I’ve thought about it for more than two seconds and like. Okay so the setup for the punchline is that when she’s catcalled by guys IRL and then mentions she doesn’t have a vagina (and Ken doesn’t have a penis) so they’re all smooth down there. Given her total lack of knowledge of the world outside of Barbieland how do. Any of them know what a vagina is to deny having one. I assume Midge has a detachable belly bc that’s what her doll was too, so she doesn’t…have a vagina either. And because the gynecologist joke happens after she becomes Real what does that say? That your genitals are what make you Real (or worse, that a vagina is what makes you a real woman because you cannot call upon the lack of one to protect you from catcallers)? Is Hari Nef’s Dr. Barbie trans? What does that imply would’ve happened to her if she became Real?
Okay wait now I’m on *this* thread of thought. So Dr. Barbie is horrified when Stereo Barbie’s feet go flat to point of fake-ralphing alongside all the other Barbies, so that implies she…wasn’t assigned Ken at birth? Because otherwise why would a Barbie having flat feet be so shocking to her? Are there no possibilities for transition in Barbieland are you either a Barbie or a Ken (or Allan)? Actually yeah hey Barbie’s feet going flat is sort of an aspect of her body not conforming to her gender isn’t it??? They could’ve done something there maybe.
And look I know casting Hari Nef made a number of people very angry and that it’s a stone on the scale for letting trans people just play roles that have nothing to do with their transness which is cool but also why *didn’t* this movie have anything more than a passing nod to Earring Magic Ken and then call that a day for representing the franchise as it is? The racial casting attempts to make the franchise more diverse, so why not do the same for gender and sexual orientation? There are actually already two Barbies released for the BMR1959 60th anniversary collection who have “Ken” builds; why aren’t they in there; get them some rep!!
I guess this is maybe a lot to ask of a film with a runtime under two hours but given how it hyped itself up I didn’t see it address the whiteness baked into the Barbie franchise or how it reifies cishet ideals beyond the implication that everyone acts Like That because it’s how girls are expected to play with their Barbies. When they went to the Real World (cinemasins ding implying LA is the real world) I wish in all the facets of womanhood they showed us we got to see ANY queerness made explicit. I would’ve eaten my own fingers to see a butch on that screen.
…I guess at the end I feel about this the way I feel about Legally Blonde? It’s trying to have a dialogue with both itself and with the culture in which it’s made re: attitudes towards femininity and it’s a VERY fun watch but ultimately lies back on existing ideas about gender without bothering to interrogate it as much as those who love the film claims that it does.
would love to hear abt unholy gift
GOOD!!!! goodgoodgood uuhhhh hold on lemme get something from discord to feed the brain worms :)))) (everything i add here on tumblr will be in blue and bolded though bc i do need to put some clarifications)
you know the 4 basic defense mechanisms - fight, flight, freeze, fawn? well guess what each of them can be applied to 4/5 main charactrs for my au >:) (my main characters being sarah, thatcher, ruth, dave, and toonbriel who i have renamed as eden. i originally had jonah be a part of this cast but i decided to kill him off like in canon. he's a super cool ghost now though!) sarah is fight, dave is flight, thatcher is freeze, and ruth is fawn
sarah is fight because she is extremely stubborn and does not back down until she believes herself to be a "winner", whether she's fighting alternates or justifying why she's just so obsessed with her brother's death. she taught herself to fend for herself after mark died, even if it pushed away her loved ones. dave is flight because he tries to deny everything happening around him. he at first denied his nephew's death, then he denied sarah's growing anger issues as well has her cutting him off for a good few years. then he denied thatcher's alcohol problems, and the thing he couldn't take the most was ruth being held captive by puppet. how could someone who took so much initiative just give up and give in to something that has hurt her? he tries denying everything around him until it eventually gets to him. thatcher is freeze because he just can't think during stressful situations. during his job, he was taught to fight, but outside his job he can't think straight when faced with difficulties. he's tried fleeing with alcohol, but the urge to curl up and cry always took over him, leaving him helpless. he gives himself time to think but no way to get out of the hole he keeps digging himself into. ruth is fawn because of how she was raised. she was raised with the thinking that a woman like her shouldn't be taking as much initiative as she does. and again, her job has taught her to fight, but outside of that she simply gives in and tries pleasing others so she doesn't have to face the consequences of standing up for herself. it especially became prominent when she was held hostage by puppet. she learned to just do what he said and maybe, just maybe, he'd set her free. but the more she gives in, the more he tries to keep her in his grasp
and for context on ruth: at some point (dont know when yet bear with me) ruth gets a call from the vol 333 alternate (who i call puppet) who has now made it his entire personality to stalk, imitate, and eventually want to kill the real thatcher, and he asks if he could stay over for a few nights because he "hadn't been feeling too well." ruth gladly obliges and it turns sour real quick because overtime she realizes she's been taking care of an alternate who ends up devolving into an entity of pure rage and power-hungry tendencies that he's willing to literally overthrow gabriel. aaaaaaand it's just bad. i'm not gonna say too much on it though bc i still need to develop a few things :) just know that she does end up getting out of that situation but not without a few scars of her own to tell her story...
preemptively sending my july book wrap up ask now so i don't forget to. also mid year book wrap up? what's been your top of the year, what's disappointed you? hand over mouth blushing emoji love heart with hands emoji
omg imo i was just thinking abt u + ur check-ins + trying to figure out how many more books i could fit in before the next message LOL 🪗💥 i've only finished the 2 i had mentioned reading since our last exchange - beautiful world, where are you by sally rooney and one-dimensional queer by roderick ferguson & tbh. the former was definitely the biggest disappointment thus far 🫥 i was psyched about the email exchange aspect but i think rooney was too self-indulgent with it (though i suppose one could argue she's indulgent with all her writing) & the ending/entire last half was so annoying/unearned to me. my friend had even warned me it was awful but he's So hypercritical/unforgiving (sag..) so i chalked it up to that LOL but no .... this was a flop 🚮
my favs so far have been gay bar by jeremy atherton lin (which i think i've already gushed about enough) and tender at the bone by ruth reichl - i simply love a good food book and was really charmed by ruth's personality & perspective, so i'm excited to add more of her works to my reading list 🍽
at the moment i'm reading either/or by elif batuman (another email correspondence moment, but done Right 😤) and 100 boyfriends by brontez purnell - thoroughly enjoying my time with both! i checked out an elena ferrante novel at the library but my friend & i just made plans to read in the miso soup by ryū murakami together next month so i may return it so as not to burn myself out on fiction 🤕 (& bc i can feel myself yearning to retreat to some theory or a juicy food/cooking essay collection OR perhaps even a dramatic play after.. we'll see how i'm feeling 🧘‍♀️)
i think for the rest of the year i want to abide by my actual goodreads 'want to read' list (& ofc go thru my owned & unread collection 📚) rather than choosing books at the library guided by impulsive whims 🤦‍♀️ god that was long SORRY but ok ur time to shine let's hear what imo's been reading + loving + hating👂💜
🪲 Life was going great. Max was gone, everyone was nice. Things were better now. Steph thought it was almost perfect. Seeing everyone apologize for the way things used to be sent an idea to her head. She wanted to make things right with Ruth and Richie. She'd do it right after the big game, she decided. She'd give them their space for a little bit, let Richie do his thing as Zeke. Plus, she had invited Pete to the game. She'd be busy with that anyway. She'd find them after the game and apologize. Steph was feeling pretty optimistic that morning. Her mood seemed to reflected by every person she passed in the hallway. It was the day of the big game, and they were gonna destroy the fucking Chemists!
🌵 this is the playlist of MY songs, it might not be fully updated but yeah!!!!
my npmd childhood friends au!!!!!! the above paragraph is from a future chapter of it and also you don't really need to have seen npmd to get it bc i basically write through the show anyway.
Reasons Why the Master Should've Been the Timeless Child
Okay, so I was re-watching some Doctor Who the other day, and I got to thinking about all of the problems I had with Chibnall's writing with the Master (rip Missy's excellent character development) and the whole 'Timeless Child' thing in general. And then it occurred to me that it would make way more sense (and, in my opinion, far more compelling) if the Master had been the Timeless Child instead of the Doctor.
and then I talked to @rhea-imagined about it and decided that I would make my first attempt and a semi-coherent meta post:
It would make the Master going absolutely apeshit and destroying all of Gallifrey even after all of the progress Missy had made make, just, so much more sense
Ruth and the whole 'past regenerations that the Doctor doesn't remember' thing can totally stay. Maybe the Doctor was one of the original Timelords to receive regenerations but didn't know where they'd come from. They find out and, being themself, rescue the Master, steal a Tardis and run away.
That could go a long way to explaining why the timelords hate them so much, plus the whole "wanted for a bunch of crimes thing" bc god knows the Time Lords wouldn't let them go easily and wouldn't put setting the Judoon on the Doctor beyond them at all. Plus, it's the Doctor, so they're running into all sorts of trouble along the way anyhow
(just now realizing that, technically, this would make the Master the Doctor's first companion, which is extremely funny)
And the Doctor and the Master spend who knows how long running from Gallifrey, planet to planet, world to world, causing and solving problems in equal measure, and they're the best (and most chaotic of course) of friends
and the Master still chooses the name Master, but it's really short for (or else it just doesn't quite come across in translation) 'Master-of-One's-Own-Fate'
But then the timelords catch up, and it's over. But the Master is so important, and the Doctor so brilliant (and therefore useful, and also as leverage), that they can't just kill them and so they erase both of their memories entirely.
And all of this would go a long way to explaining the Doctor and the Master's relationship, as well as why the Master is Like That because
everything that happened would result in, just, an enormous amount of trauma: rage, hurt, fear, emotional pain, the whole kit and caboodle, which wouldn't necessarily go away with a memory wipe
what the memory wipe would do is take away any means that the Master would have had to deal with it: speaking from personal experience, it's almost impossible to deal with that kind of emotion in any kind of constructive way if you have no idea why you're feeling it
So what you end up with is a genius (who, to be honest, might not have been the most stable of beings before the memory wipe) with a near-bottomless well of all of that mess of emotion and trauma with no direction for it whatsoever. Add to that the High Council electing to send back the signal to save Gallifrey and driving the Master mad at age eight...yeah, they pretty much screwed the Master (and themselves, and the Doctor) over with that one, on top of all the other ways they'd already been screwed over
So: insane, incredibly traumatized genius who's filled to the brim with rage with no direction. Why does he fixate on the Doctor? because of their interactions in the past:
He loves the doctor because they were friends, and the doctor tried SO HARD to save him, and he HATES the Doctor because the doctor should be able to save him, should KNOW and UNDERSTAND him better than anyone and it's like they don't REMEMBER HOW
(Which, of course, isn't rational, because them getting caught wasn't the doctor's fault, and it's not the doctor's fault that they don't remember anything, but, again, if you don't know why you feel something you can't cope with it, suss it out and deal with it)
and then meanwhile, you've got the Doctor, who's also got an unhealthy dose of trauma from everything just, perhaps, somewhat less severe, and they haven't been driven insane by the drums.
What the Doctor's got is this perpetual feeling of guilt for failing the Master, even when stuff happens that isn't in any way shape or from their fault, or even having anything to do with them, because they tried SO HARD in that past life to save them, and it didn't work. Helloooo, guilt complex (that they probably already had, this just makes it worse)
(Also goes a long way to explain the whole insane amount of mercy and forgiveness and love the doctor had for the master)And so, even when the Master becomes Missy and the madness is gone, there's still that rage, and still with no direction, because she CANT REMEMBER so she takes it out on what she always does: that which is important to the doctor
Which, incidentally, is WHY the whole basement imprisonment stuff was beginning to work, because Missy was finally starting to figure out that she isn't actually angry with the doctor at all, doesn't hate them
also, I'd like to think, that after the Master finds out the truth, the whole O thing, would have gone VERY differently
Like, still would've been a total shitshow, but maybe not so much with the world domination and they trying to kill the doctor and her friends because he's finally found where his anger actually goes (and had already begun to figure out where it DOESN'T while he was Missy)
(He still doesn't explain anything useful, bc he still (rather pettily) hates that the doctor forgot and wants her to figure it out herself, rip)
And maybe, when the Master is the timeless child, he doesn't burn all of Galiffrey. Maybe he leaves the civilians, the ones who aren't time lords, who didn't know, didn't benefit the way the Time Lords did. Maybe he leaves the children, who didn't know better, because he's seen what these people DO to children, and its not their fault. Maybe he leaves the Doctor's adopted family and any of their kids/grandkids who are still alive, bc they always cared for them, both of them, and they never knew either
Maybe he only burns the old, callous, cowardly and cruel timelords who got them into this damn mess in the first place and did nothing to fix it, those high handed bastards who would have seen him and the doctor utterly destroyed and gladly profited from their pain
(maybe he waits for the Doctor to figure stuff out, and they make a bonding experience out of blowing up the Citadel or something and then leave again. If Romana's still around, she can be in charge lol.)
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
time travel arccccccccccccc yessssssssss
I have been waiting SO LONG to reread this arc hhhhh yessss
starting off strong with the sexy roller cover. nice
I love the disconnect of ‘orion pax: outlaw’ compared to the last time we saw him in shadowplay where he was orion pax: supercop
he’s still punching people for JUSTICE or whatever so I guess not much has changed
oh my god this is the issue with the many many two-page spreads...the first time I read this issue I didn't realize that was a thing and GOD I was SO fucking confused. there's already a lot going on in this issue/arc but this made things so much worse hvbhjkdfbsk. I powered thru and still managed to understand most of the arc despite reading half this issue out of order (essentially) bc the website I read it on split the pages up and I couldn't tell they were supposed to be doubled (and also I'm dumb so I didn't figure it out)
anyways, the actual issue...windcharger is out here using his powers to rip a dudes arms clean off. wow!
and there's skids getting punched in the face. Ls
and glitch! a totally minor character of course...
MANNNNN I SO adore the panel of all the lost lighters appearing in a cloud of purple smoke, all posing epically....SO fucking good, peak sci-fi coolness vibes, A++
as usual jro killing it w/the titles, ‘elegant chaos’ is such a great name for a time travel arc
also reading the tfwiki has shown me that many of jros titles are song or album titles, to which I say - that's epic and I love it. with jro doing it, I feel like it straddles the line between referencing music and the very fanfic-esque ‘title things after music’ vibe. I love it
oh god I forgot they use bs cybertronian time units in this sometimes lmao...I mean of course they do but still like, what the fuck is a cycle. is that a day. I feel like these words all have no meaning/the meanings change drastically depending on continuity. I cant keep up and also I'm lazy and don't care enough to try
I love rodimus did u know
poor riptide looks so confused lmao
IS....IS REWIND PIGGYBACKING TAILGATE...THATS SO FUCKING CUTE....I cant fully tell bc of the page layout but ooomg so precious. minibot buddies
whirl saying ‘chuff’ just reminded me how british jro is hvbhakjhdsfbs sometimes it just Jumps Out in mtmte and I'm like Oh God Britain Is Real
I really like the mtmte approach to time travel and paradoxes and whatnot. its just complex enough to be interesting but not too convoluted that it bogs down the story. perfect sci-fi fun!
mannnn chromedome talking abt brainstorm :( I'm sad abt those two hhhhh
and I love how at this point, nobody in the cast ACTUALLY knows brainstorm well enough to know what he’s really doing - including chromedome, who’s ostensibly his closest friend, somebody he’s known for a while - and even the readers don't really know what he’s up to...I like the mystery tbh
cant believe rewind wrote orion pax’s biography, omg. completely forgot abt that detail
cd saying ‘I love it when he talks history’ about rewind....hhhh I love cdrw so muuuuch
godddd the line rodimus says abt whirl - how they need people like whirl around who are ‘happy to get in the way’ of danger and death - that shit haunts me man like...rodimus is basically saying that he’s bringing whirl along to potentially die in place of someone like orion pax (nevermind the fact that whirl dying would ALSO fuck up the timeline)...like, how deep does it go?? is he saying that bc he knows whirl has been trying to get himself killed for a while now, or just bc whirl likes violence? mannn I cant...the character intricacies...man
anyways...I love rodimus he’s such an interesting character. you have that fucked up moment and then in the next panel he’s saying ‘if you want to call it a time phone, I wont stop you’ about the quantum walkie-talkie. he has the RANGE
oh and then rodimus casually volunteering chromedome to do mnemosurgery on anyone who might accidentally find out about them time traveling, which is again fucked up on multiple levels. the raaaaange
vjaksbhdhfusajbfdjk that panel of the lost light squad just standing there like idiots reminds me of that post where someone said abt that panel ‘these characters have a collective 3 brain cells’ or something hvbjadkfnksfdl
rodimus IMMEDIATELY breaking his own rules by trying to reassure pax that they're good guys by pointing at his autobot badge, even tho the autobots DONT EVEN EXIST YET at this point...my boy PLEASE go purchase some brain cells from the store
and the fact that rodimus introduced himself to pax w/his real name...shouldn't he go by an alias or st??? that seems like a good time travel rule since optimus and rodimus definitely know each other later
and like, did they not anticipate that some of the people in the past would recognize some of the lost lighters hgbajkhdjfnjksf like cd and whirl get Instantly recognized...great job guys
they are all SO bad at this hvbahskjdhfbasjkf I cantttt luckily for them the orion crew is handing them easy alibis
‘the dugout’ is that a baseball reference????
also I love the scenery here, the bg looks like rock but there's metal piping and stuff running thru it, its so cool...really adds to the whole ‘cybertron biomes are made of metal’ thing
‘ancient history’ rodimus are you KIDDING ME-
cyclonus time travels to the past and IMMEDIATELY finds a window to stare broodingly out of. icon
tailgate thinking orion pax is SUPER COOL continues here from shadowplay and I love it...tailgate is so cute
and the tg saying ‘don't you think that's awesome, cyclonus?’ hhhhh so cute
one reason I love this arc so much is that this is the arc where the gay Really amps up
TRAILBREAKER.... oh man ;_;
are you telling me that this outlaw base they're in has ONE bed for all of these people. what the hell vhbaksjhfnsal
cant believe rung sampled roller’s steroid juice box
also cant believe robot steroids exist. except yes I can and I love it
oooh roller’s a 0/1%er? I forgot abt that
cant believe orion pax just grabs some random phone that belongs to these weird new people and answers it. WHO does that
goddddd megatron and orion’s conversation....destroy me
HHHHHH like...the HISTORY....the regret...the missed opportunities...its all so palpable....goddddddd
and of COURSE, the whole thing is steeped in tragedy...the ideological differences that will become the foundation for a 4 million year long war...megatron, who believes that you need to burn things down and start again to really make change stick, and then orion, who says ‘reform is the answer, not revolution’....AUGHHH the intricacies. mannnn
‘you sound lost’ 😭😭😭
‘its tragic.’ yeah, that about sums up their relationship, especially at this stage and in this continuity
anyways. [cries about old man megatron talking to young naïve orion pax] goodbye
AUGHHH and then we jump to rodimus ONCE AGAIN breaking his own rules and trying to save trailbreaker...IT HURTS MAN...god I love rodimus, I feel like him being broken up about crewmembers like trailbreaker dying is one part regular sadness over people he knows dying for tragic reasons, and one part personal guilt at someone under his command dying, even if he’s not involved/at fault. I love the dichotomy of this emotional reaction that comes only partially from empathy/emotion, but also comes from a kinda self-centered need for success as measured by people under your command staying alive. and taking into account rodimus’s life it totally makes sense that he’d act like that...GAH I love it. the complexity of it all!
orion pax saying ‘you should read [megatron]. it’s powerful stuff’ I'm screaming, so many LAYERSSSSS
I fucking love time travel AHHHHHHHHH like the opportunity for interactions like these....chefs kiss
‘hey, best friend! miss you!’ rodimus is such a shit hvbdajkfksjhfd
‘very sus’ rodimus ahead of his time w/the among us lingo
oooh and then they realize that the senate is trying to kill the sparks...gotta save the babies!
tailgate scolding cyclonus for bluntly stating that you'd wanna be subtle when killing newborns...hhhvbhsdfhhhhhh I love them sm
ooooh and rewind has an interesting suggestion - that the senate is actually trying to irradiate the sparks into being outliers...rewind is so smart I love him
and the fact that he’s using history from his database...love it
rodimus sending cyclonus and whirl out like pokemon
ROLLER NOOOO DONT GO OUT THERE
also wow this is literally the 5th (I think) double page spread in this issue...the confusion I felt the first time I read this...lmao
and now this is literally one of my favorite issues so I'm glad I know what's going on lmao
oh man rodimus telling cd not to erase trailbreakers memory even tho that could jeopardize the entire timeline... :(
oh man I didn't even notice but roller getting debris blasted into his face like that makes the whole ‘roller is tarn’ theory even more legit considering tarn’s face scars....
‘tighter the better’ hhh don't say that orion. but also, that’s the companion phrase to megatron saying ‘the deeper the better’ hvbhasjkhdfbaksjlf
I do love the semi-campy action hero antics that orion pax gets up to. its just so fun, even when the stakes are high and things are serious
‘this is the greatest thing I have ever seen’ tg ily
THE REVEAL THAT THE SPARKS WENT TO NYON...so rodimus just saved himself, basically...time travel is so trippy
GODDDD ND THEN TRAILBREAKER...HVHHHHHh 😭😭😭 THATS SO CRUEL MAN
oh man that last panel of trailbreaker holding up roller’s juice box...iirc the first time I read this I thought that was roller (cause of the juice box I guess? idk I'm an idiot) so I was like oh ok he must've come back or something. very much related but I didn't really think about tarn being a particular pre-established character and totally didn't read the whole ‘roller is tarn’ thing that was going on
which in my defense ruth also didn't pick up on any of that while reading this and eventually like 2 issues before the reveal I had to prompt her like ‘you should maybe be wondering WHO tarn is’ vhbahjksdfbaksjdf
so! issue 37! this issue is a solid favorite of mine, id say definitely top 5 or even 3. I'm super biased bc I fucking LOVE time travel, it’s seriously one of my favorite tropes ever, and this issue hits all the time travel beats I love. characters traveling to the past and interacting with people they know! conversations that have multiple meanings bc of TIME TRAVEL! trying to save someone who meets a terrible fate in your future! fun time travel action! the time traveling characters being generally terrible at hiding the fact that they're time travelers! ITS SO GOOD.
and I love the clever way everything is tied together here - where we get a nice continuation of shadowplay, with this taking place shortly after that with a lot of the same cast, and time travel classics like the good ole ‘if we hadn't travelled back in time and done what we did, the future we came from wouldn't have existed at all,’ in the flavor of ‘rodimus saving his baby self’ and ‘rodimus NOT saving trailbreaker’ and ‘everyone forgot about roller :(’
ok but like, did the lost lighters just go ‘oh well, guess rollers gone now.’ like they DID realize that the outlaw crew would have no idea what happened to him if they got their memories erased, right?? did the lost lighters figure that since roller never reappeared after this time period, that was how history was ‘supposed’ to go and they shouldn't mess with it? am I overthinking it? as usual: yes, probably. I love overthinking about comics, in case that wasn't obvious
basically...I love this issue soooo much. so so good and a bunch of fun tropes that I love. I mean the whole arc is like that for me since I love time travel so much. so I cant wait to (re)read more!!
april reading
oh yeah this is a thing. anyway in april i read about uhhh.... first contact (twice), murderers on skis & victorian church politics
the yield, tara june winch a novel about indigenous australian identity and history (now and throughout the 20th century) in three narrative strands. imo the narrative strand that consists of a grandfather writing a dictionary of his language (wiradjuri) in order to prove a claim to some land is by far the strongest, but overall i liked this quite a lot. 3/5
land of big numbers, te-ping chen a solid short story collection focused on modern china and young(ish) chinese people, both in china and the diaspora. i particularly liked the stories that had some slighty surreal or speculative elements, such as one about fruit that strongly evoke emotions when eaten and a group of people stuck in a train station for months as the train is delayed, which imo use their speculative aspects in effective (if not super subtle) ways to talk about society. 3/5
the pear field, nana ekvtimishvili (tr. from georgian by elizabeth heighway) international booker prize longlist! a short, fairly depressing read about a 18-year-old girl at a post-soviet school for developmentally disabled childred (but also orphans, abandoned children & other random kids) who is trying to get a younger boy adopted by an american couple. there seem to be a lot of novels set at post-soviet orphanages etc & imo this is a well-executed example of the microgenre, with the pear field full of pears that are never picked bc they don’t taste right as a strong central image. 3/5
the warden, anthony trollope (chronicles of barsetshire #1) ah yes, a 6-part victorian series about church politics in an english town, exactly the kind of thing i’m interested in. not sure why i committed to at least the first two entries of the series but here we are. despite this lack of interest (and disagreement with most of the politics on display here) i found this quite charming; trollope has a gift for an amusing turn of phrase & making fun of his characters in benevolent ways. 3/5
the lesson, cadwell turnbull first contact scifi novel set on the virgin islands, where an alien ship arrives one day. the aliens seem benevolent & share helpful technology, but also react with extreme violence to any aggression. they claim to be on earth to study.... something, but it’s never entirely clear what. the book makes some interesting choices (like immediately skipping over the actual first contact to a few years in the future, when the aliens are already established on the islands) but i thought much of it was kinda disjointed and confusing. 2/5
the heart is a lonely hunter, carson mccullers look, i get it, it’s all about the isolation & alienation (& dare i say loneliness) of 4 miserable characters projecting their issues on the central character singer, who is kind and patient and also deaf and mute, thus making him the perfect receptacle for their issues without really having to connect with him as a person and how that isolation hinders them socially, artistically, emotionally, politically, but like... i didn’t really like it. i didn’t hate it but i just felt very meh about it all. 2.5/5
acht tage im mai: die letzte woche des dritten reiches, volker ulrich fascinating history book about the last week(ish) of the third reich, starting with the day of hitler’s suicide and ending with the total surrender (but with plenty of flashbacks and forwards), and looking at military&political leadership (german and allied) as well as prisoners of war, forced laborers, concentration camp prisoners, and everyone else. very interesting look at what kästner described as the “gap between the not-anymore and the not-yet.” 3.5/5
firekeeper’s daughter, angeline boulley) i’ve been mostly off the YA train for the last few years, but this was a really good example of contemporary YA with a focus on ~social issues. ANYWAY. this is YA crime novel about daunis, a mixed-race unenrolled ojibwe girl close to finishing high school who is struggling with family problems, university plans, and feeling caught between her white and her native familiy when her best friend is shot in front of her and she decides to become a CI for an fbi investigation into meth production in the community. i really appreciated how hard this went both with the broader social issues (racism, addiction) and daunis’ personal struggles. there are a few bits that felt a bit didactic & on the nose (and the romance... oh well), but overall the themes of community, family, and the value of living indigenous culture are really well done & i teared up several times. 4/5
the magic toyshop, angela carter i love carter’s short stories but struggle with (while still liking) her novels so far. this one, a tale of melanie, suddenly orphaned after trying on her mother’s wedding dress in the garden, coming of age and awakening to womanhood or whatever. carter’s really into that. it’s well-written, sensual as carter always is, and the family melanie and her siblings are sent to, her tyrannical puppet-maker uncle, his mute wife and the wife’s two brothers, both fascinating and offputting (& dirty) make for an interesting cast of characters, but overall i just wish i was reading the bloody chamber again. 3/5
barchester towers, anthony trollope (chronicles of barsetshire #2) (audio) lol tbh i still don’t know why i am committing to this series about, again, church politics in 19th century rural england, but it’s just so chill & warm & funny (we love gently or not so gently - but always politely - mocking our characters) that i’m enjoying it as a nice little trip where people do some #crazyschemes to gain church positions or fight over whether there should be songs in church or whatever it is people in the 19th century fought about. it’s very relaxing. there also is a lot of love quadrangleyness going on and that’s also fun. trollope has weird ideas about women but like whatever, i for one wish mrs proudie much joy of her position as defacto bishop of barchester, she really girlbossed her way to the top. 3.5/5
semiosis, sue burke (semiosis #1) i love spinning the wheel on the “first contact with X weird alien species” & i guess this time we landed on plants! plant intelligence is interesting and the idea of plant warfare is really cool. i do like the structure, with different generations of human settlers on the planet pax providing a long-term view but this allows the author to skip over a lot of the development of the relationship between the settlers and the plant and locating the plot elsewhere, which i think is ultimately a mistake. i might continue w/ the series tho, depending on library availability. 2.5/5
one by one, ruth ware a bunch of start-up people go on a corporate retreat to a ski chalet in the alps, avalanche warning goes up, one of them disappears, presumably on a black piste, the rest get snowed in & completely cut off when the avalanche hits and then they get picked off *title drop* (altho really not that many of them). nice fluff when i had a miserable cold (not covid) but fails when it tries to go for deeper themes... like an attempt to address classism and entitlement sure... was made. also like what kind of luxury skiing chalet does not have emergency communication devices in case internet/phone lines are down...  i’d have sued just for that. 2/5
fake accounts, lauren oyler the microgenre of ‘alienated intellectual(ish) probably anglophone person has some sort of crisis, goes to berlin about it’ is my ultimate literary weakness - i almost never really like them, they mostly irritate me & yet i can never resist their siren call. this one is p strong on the irritation, altho at least the narrator does not ascribe much meaning to her decision to go to berlin after she a) discovers her boyf is an online conspiracy theorist (probably not sincerely) and b) gets a call that said boyf has died, it’s really just something to do to avoid doing anything else. but other than that it’s so BerlinExpat by the numbers, like she lives in kreuzkölln! put her somewhere else at least! there is one scene that elevates the BerlinExpat-ness of it all (narrator asks expatfriend for advice on visa applications, expatfriend assures her that it’s really easy for americans to get visa, adds “especially now” while literally, as the narrator remarks, gesturing at the falafel she’s eating) other than that, the novel is.... fine. it’s smart, but not really as smart as it thinks it is, which is a problem bc it thinks it’s just sooo incisive. whatever. 2/5
the tenant of wildfell hall, anne bronte this is reductive but: jane eyre: i could fix him // wuthering heights: i could make him worse // wildfell hall: lmao i’m gonna leave his ass anyway i enjoyed the part that is actually narrated by the titular tenant of wildfell hall, helen (which thankfully, i think, is most of it) because the perspective of a woman who runs away from her abusive alcoholic of a husband is genuinely interesting and engaging, while gilbert, the frame story narrator who falls in love with helen, is.... the worst. i mean he’s not the worst bc the abusive husband arthur is there and hard to beat in terms of worseness, but he’s pretty fucking bad. imagine if helen had found out that gilbert attacked her secret brother over a misunderstanding, severely injured him & LEFT HIM TO DIE & then (when dude survived & the misunderstanding got cleared up) apologised like well i guess i didn’t treat you quite right! she’d have to run away from her second husband as well! poor girl. 3/5
SPNLV - Mark Pellegrino
Q: As a so cal gal, you say “on the outside looking in”, so i gotta ask, oingo boingo?
A: I love oingo boingo, yeah I was a punk rock fan back in the 80s
Q: What’s your fove and most challenging part about playing luci
A; fave is also most challenging, is that cheating? I like being an unhinged 6 yo. There’s no consequences for a 6 yo, and I think luci sees things the same way, esp this season. That’s what happens to you after a trauma, you become frozen emotionally at that event. so when you see luci, think of a 6 yo and it’ll all come together
Q: what would you have been if not an actor
A: marine biologist, I was really into science. I saw Jaws when I was v young, and looking back now that shark looks really fake, but it terrified me and I became obsessed with sharks, and it drove my love of marine biology but also kept me from getting my scuba cert. I was terrified and respectful of the ocean, but more terrified
Q: Since you’re trained in boxing, how many of your own stunts do you do?
A: I do most of my own stunts, can’t you tell? Yeah, I do most of my own unless it’s sophisticated fight stuff. We pretty much do all our own fights.
Stunt fighting... nothing like real fighting guys. Real fighting you can’t telegraph, stunt fighting you have to show it all.
Q: If all the quips and bon mots are scripted or improv
A: most everything is scripted, but occasionally a few moments slip through. So there’s this little adorable angel called cupid, he was adorable, and luci needed grace so he does bad things to cupid, so tapping his head and saying “oh cupid don’t cry” that was all playing off the character
It’s Lucifer trying to buy time so he can figure out what to do.
Ep 18 has anael, just filmed an ep with her
Q: What has it been like working with Danneel, is jensen there
A: awkward. So the ep where I stole jo’s grace, the director originally had an idea, he’s like “yeah we want to see you guys in different positions,” and I’m like No! Not just that that would be silly, but I’m not getting in positions with Jensen’s wife! And my wife was right there watching! I’m not afraid of you (director), but I am afraid of her.
The moment wasn’t about that, it was about jo touching chords and being intimate and lucifer being intimate and being uncomfortable about the feelings. That said, Danneel is v professional, jensen was only there the one day when we were all filming together. Other than that he was home.
Q: Fave show was lost, how did you think a fight between Jacob and Luci
A: Lucifer would win
Person: You said lucifer was impulsive, soo
A: but jacob was impulsive too
person: but then jacob waited millennia
A: The director gave me one direction, jesus the carpenter, and I can’t see jesus the carpenter in a fight with lucifer
Q: If you could possess anyone, who
A: *laugh* what’s the endgame
P: just cause you wanted to
Audience: vince vincente?
A: what’s wrong with vince. I’m not sure this person isn’t already possessed, and i’m not sure i could do any more to add to the universal humor, but my first instinct is to say Trump.
Aud: impeach!
A: there’s enough people working on that, so... what’s the goal, the goal is everything
Q: if lucifer were to be killed, do you have a pref for who kills you?
A: there’s so much wrong with that question on so many different levels. I;m going to ask you since you’ve thought about it, who do you want cause clearly you want
P: I think bc the 180 years of torture, sam
A: first of all if 180 years of torture results in Sam, it’s doing pretty good, it’s called working out, facials, hair conditioner. Come up with someone else
P: Ruth
A: I’m very afraid of Ruth, she is a loose canon and she’s mad at me for some reason. Vince Vincente was a dick to her, Casifer was a dick, i wasn’t
Audience: 12x21
A: oops, right that was me. and that’s why I’m afraid of her, she’s strong and crafty. I do think that would be a more just comeuppance than sam. I wasn’t thinking about my imminent death until now.
I wonder if Rowena is in Wayward...
Q: How jared’s and misha’s interpretations of lucifer influenced you, and who played luci better
A: I think jared did his interpretation first, he was the first, he had a very regal hamlet contained vibe, and that was the s5 vibe, and misha was respectful of my characterization and lent his own voice, i like that cause it’s fun. If you’re going to try to destroy the whole human race, it has to be fun. There has to be charm to a bad guy otherwise they’re not palatable. If they’re not interesting in some way, there’s no conflict for the viewer.
But the thing with the small stature luci, 6 yo luci, is interesting, we have this narrative, this way of looking at good at evil, that their equal powers. And in the middle there’s chaos. I don’t think evil in reality is powerful, it’s scary because it’s irrational, but it’s weak. The good is the powerful. If you think about it, the people who steal are weak and dependent on the people who make things. It’s parasitic. I think in art, making fun of the evil is far more productive than acting as if it’s equally powerful. Make fun of evil, laugh at it, and then decisively crunch it.
Q: (kid) why did you give asmodeus his scars, you made him
A: look at him, look at the suit he wears. I’m joking. I think he tried to take over my job, like a duke who tries to take over a kingdom. He tried to make a move and he lost, i ended up putting him back in his place. You like asmodeus?
Kid: yes
Q: If Lucifer could be any disney princess
A: i don’t know my disney princesses
Audience: elsa!
A: who’s elsa? There’s so many opinions, how can there be so many opinions. Maleficent. If lucifer were a princess he would be malafafafafa
Person: that’s not a princess!
A: malafafafa
Audience: cinderella
A: noo
Person: aurora, bc pink dress and pink wings
A: sleeping beauty? What about the one with the arrows? Merida. My kids are grown I don’t know disney anymore
Q: past season, we’ve been focusing on aus, if you were put into an au what would you want it to be?
A: I’m going to start shit i feel like if i say what i’m going to say...
aud: french mistake!
A; that’s a good episode... this is going to sound boring and semi controversial, i would have a world where we all understood, like in the enlightenment where Reason was god, and all the attendant values that came with it. So reason was how you dealt with people. So, a universe respect for reason above all. That we were all individuals and worthy of respect.
Q: date of release for last train
A: Tony wrote a movie about an episode in his own life, it’s been filmed but it’s still being shopped around, so i’m not sure when you’ll be able to see it
Q: Heavens no, hell yeah, why is there no purgatory maybe
A: I like that, good idea
Person: also the playground
A: that’s creepy
person: if the demons had one, where would they go
A: that’s creepy, angels coming out of the sand pit. Is it multiple pits? Just one? I think the demons would use vegas, particularly the link hotel.
Q: Which was your fave, bishop or lucifer
A: Lucifer, that was easy. Bishop i liked in s4, it was an alternate universe it wasn’t a stodgy uptight bishop with bad hair, he was more of an assertive mob boss
Q: How much of your acting is you being in the moment and how much is you thinking about the moves
A: first way is the best way all the time, do your homework first and then see what happens. The bad news about working like that is you never know what take they’re going to use. Always be in the moment, unless you’re a calculating character
Q: pitchfork on window scene was defining for me, what moment for you defined lucifer
A: i think it was lucifer said “snapping necks and cashing checks, it’s what i do”
Eta: i put 19 originally, mel has corrected me to ep 18 for danneel
chuck bartowski - otp: SARAH notp: JILL >:(
denny duquette - otp: life notp: death :/
why were you drawn to each one of your characters?
ruth balakov  - i’ve had her character in my head for such a long time, and i was finally just like “fuck it! i’m gonna write her!” bc i love parks and rec, but i just can’t play leslie bc there’s too much history and stuff and i really wanted to play a quirky nina fc bc i used to have one that i loved, and it just seemed like a perfect fit
samir chaudhry - i felt a desperate need to reply as an astronaut to @cverture‘s beth, and so samir was born
tutankhamun “tut” mcmullen  - tut’s origin story is one of the best!!! so, @idyllicism and i decided to use this randomizing character generator to do a fun random thread, and it gave me tut (which is why his name is so out there) who has grown so close to my heart, and i am thankful
jughead jones - tbh i added jughead bc i wanted to write him properly aKA ASEXUAL! I’M LOOKIN AT U RIVERDALE
melody valentine - tbh… i added her bc i wanted to write her with jenna :) and also i loved archie comics as a kid and always thought melody was so beautiful and her voice came easily to me so !
mark darcy - buckle in, this is gonna be a long ride. bridget jones’s diary is one of those movies that i love to death. it’s one of my sick movies, it’s one of my sad movies, my homesick movies, it helps me feel better. so, watching bridget jones i’ve always identified with both of the lead characters, but there’s something about mark that was especially easy for me to access. i’m still trying to figure out exactly what it is, but there’s something to him that i just…understand, if that makes sense. when i decided to make a multi-muse, he was one of the very first characters i had as a muse bc i knew i had to add him. he’s in my heart and soul.
choi han-kyul - so han-kyul is another one of those characters who i just really strongly identify with. in coffee prince, he’s someone who undergoes some huge development in who he is, and when i saw the drama for the first time, it aligned with some things i was dealing with in my own life. his relationship with his father, his coming to terms with his sexuality, his maturation, his longing to live up to his own potential, it all just hit me. another heart and soul character.
dr. noelle akopian - i added her for the funsies
greg serrano - i think i added him because he helps me come to terms with some real life stuff i have going on and also because i loved his development and wanted to explore that past what the show was able to give us
maya - honestly she’s the most pure being, and i just had to add her
valencia perez - valencia is a goddess who deserves better and i’m looking forward to exploring why she is the way she is
johnny castle - when i saw dirty dancing, i fell in love with johnny, and that’s pretty much it. god bless.
blair warner - i cANNOT fuck this is taking so much longer than i thought it would, but i have so many muses, and want to give them all their proper due, and fuclasfhdads. so from the beginning, i walked into a gas station this summer, and one of the employees was like “oh my god, you look exactly like blair from the facts of life!” and i was like “haha thanks!” bc i didn’t know who she was, but my dad who was with me was like “oh my god she does!” and then he was like “she’s like her more than just in looks too” meaning our personalities were similar. so OFC i had to watch this show to see my doppelganger. and WOW i was amazed bc she’s the closest i’ve ever seen to myself in physical aspects but also we’re very similar personality-wise too, and after my first episode, i fell in love, and i just had to add her as a muse
jo polniaczek - i didn’t expect jo, but after i watched that first episode, i fell in love just as i did with blair. honestly, the writers and cast can say she’s straight all they want, but jo is a gay icon, and it’s just so cool to see a character like that who’s so layered. jo is sensitive but also tough. she’s gone through a lot, but still holds such compassion and i love her to death and fuckfdsakfasf she’s honestly ruined all human beings for me now bc she’s the ultimate.
emily gilmore - so, emily is another one of those relating characters. what can i, a 22 year old baby bi, have in common with an old middle aged straight? well, let me tell you: a LOT. i identify so much with the way that emily has tried all her life to succeed in the society she was brought up in and having set ways of doing things and then just…letting go and trying to make herself happy. it’s inspiring and i love her.
meredith quill - listen, i’m not a fan of superhero movies, but i like the guardians of the galaxy series, and when i saw the second movie, i fell instantly in love with meredith and her light, and i had to add her
alice longbottom - i have never read the books, but i’ve read a lot of fandom stuff, and i just love the longbottoms, and i like that there’s a certain amount of freedom there to explore who she is and her story
arthur weasley - arthur reminds me of my dad, and his voice comes super easily to me which is why i added him
victoire weasley - again, i like the amount of freedom i’m afforded in figuring out who she is and all that
helga g. pataki - this is another heart and soul character. as a kid, i was also mean and dramatic and precocious. i was a LOT like helga. even today, i struggle with trying to soften myself for the benefit of others because i can come across as intimidating (idk why??). but i just…it’s just like damn. i get you, helga. we both have an alcoholic parent, tense relationships with our older sisters, and we both don’t have a TON of friends and just feel kind of…out of place, i guess, in the world we live in. we’re a little out of place and i just get her. i understand her, and i’m glad that she exists.
effie trinket - she’s just such a fascinating character, and i want to explore her more
katniss everdeen - i get her
jane villanueva - see, jane is someone who i think i look up to. she’s someone i wish i could be more like. i chose to add her as a muse because i love her and just want to give her a nice life bc lord knows she deserves it
michael cordero i added him bc he loves jane and is a huge dork and so caring and i lvoe him
rogelio de la vega - in a weird way, this is another character i relate a lot to. we’re both dramatic and a little vain, but we also care a lot about our family and most of the time, our intentions are good. he’s honestly such a fun character, and i’m glad i added him.
elle woods - i added her bc she’s amazing??? one of the best people of all time??? and her voice came easily to me so i was like “all right!!!!”
ryan atwood - he’s my fave character from the oc. i love his development, and i love how he’s not exactly who you expect him to be. you think he’s gonna be this big troublemaker, but actually, he just wants a stable life, and he wants the people he loves to be happy. he just wants peace
pam beesly - she’s another heart character. i think a lot of people find it easy to relate to pam bc she goes through so many relatable things, and her story is overcoming insecurities and becoming more confident, and i think that’s something a lot of people can see themselves in.
fitzwilliam darcy - i mean, i’ve always loved pride & prejudice, and i’ll be damned if darcy isn’t the easiest character for me to understand (a lot like mark)
jane bennet - she holds a special place in my heart bc people have said i’m like jane, and i’m always like “i wish” bc she’s the softest, most pure, most kind person, and i just needed that positivity in my life
queen clarisse renaldi - mY LOVE i love how they made her so layered in the movies, giving you hints of her background. i’ve always been interested in exploring her past, so i added her as a muse (another character whose voice came easily to me)
sabrina fairchild - sabrina is one of those movies i would watch after school was i was younger. i loved the romanticism of it and the costumes and music, and as i grew older, i started to think that it would have made for a more interesting movie if sabrina dumped linus at the end rather than ending up with him. what’s so interesting about that movie is her growth. she goes from a very dark place and undergoes some major development while still holding underpinnings of her past despite desperately trying to leave them behind.
capheus onyango - i love sense8, so i knew i wanted to add muses or a muse from there, and going through all the characters, capheus’s voice was the one that came most easily to me. he’s more than just his optimism, and i love having him in my roster bc he has such warmth and compassion for those around him. he worries about how his actions will affect others, and i just have such immense love for him.
princess fiona - me??? i grew up on shrek, and i love it in the most unironic way possible. i sincerely adore the movie and the musical, and fiona is a character i’ve always loved and related to a little bit.
shrek - but more than relating to fiona, i probably relate to shrek more. my family has always joked that i’m like an onion too and that i have layers just like shrek. he grosses me out a lil with all the farting and earwax, but otherwise, i love shrek and think that for living alone for years after being abandoned by his parents, he was able to grow rather quickly once meeting other people, and shrek is good in my book
charles brooks - he’s another darcy like character, although i don’t love him as much. i added him bc lbr the younger fandom needs him
josh - mY SON i love josh and i think that he has so much growing to do, and i love how the show has left some of his background open so that i can take a lil bit more liberty in figuring him out. i also love his adventurous spirit and his ease while also being so loyal and loving. he’s someone i really love.
chuck bartowski - chuck is one of those types that’s easier for me to write, and i think it’s just cause one of our core values is the same: family. family is one of the most important things to him, and it’s one of the most important things to me, and i think we just get each other in that aspect and more.
denny duquette - “i’m a man! i’m a strong virile horse of a man stuck in the body some weak sick bastard that I don’t know, like or recognize. now if you knew what that feels like, you would have never convinced me to let a battery run my heart. if you knew what that feels like izzie, you would have let me go.” this is why.
which muse is the most fun to write for?
again, i have fun with all of them, but probably rogelio. he’s just so much fun to write. helga is a lot of fun too! and ruth!
is there another muse you’ve been thinking of adding or writing for? who?
i mean, there are always more muses i’m thinking of adding. i’ve thought about adding na ae-ra from cunning single lady, but i’m pretty sure no one would write with her, so i haven’t added her yet.
i’m planning on watching the good place, and i just know i’ll probably wanna add someone from there
adding someone from frasier would be cool, but like…i highly doubt there would be an audience for them. like i’d love to write niles or smth, but idk if anyone’s even watched it. i mean, that hasn’t stopped me before, but i’m not pressed about it rn
i’ve always been wanting to add elizabeth from the crown because she’s another one of those characters i just super strongly relate to, but seeing as how she’s actually a real person, i haven’t. this is where i get a little confused because i know she’s a real person, but also, the show takes liberties, and she’s not actually queen elizabeth. like if i could take her character and make her not the real queen of england i would? but i just don’t know about what other people think of that? i dont knowslfjhads it’s a weird situation.
also someone from the west wing
what is something everyone should know about your muses before interacting?
sometimes, the muse for a certain character isn’t always there, so i can be really slow in replying.
Mother’s Day, 14 May 2017, has come and gone. It is beautiful how mothers give unconditional love to their children and most children return that love unconditionally. Mother is the doctor, teacher, nurse, cook, referee, heroine, provider, housekeeper, defender, disciplinarian - the real Superwoman. Wear your cape proudly, dear mother. A lot has been written about mothers dating back to the Greeks and Romans. Julia Ward Howe brought attention to mothers’ contribution to society in 1870 but she did not have the vision of a day like today’s Mother’s Day. The woman who had the vision, the strength, the energy, the determination and the tenaciousness was Anna Jarvis. On 8 May 1914 Congress passed a law declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. On the next day President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the first Mother’s Day. The proclamation is copied at the end of this blog. Jarvis’ relentless effort had reached a successful conclusion. But that is not the end of the story. To get to the end, we should start at the beginning. Anna Jarvis’ mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, was a tireless advocate for women’s rights. She was a peace advocate and cared for solders on both sides of the civil war. She created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. When she died in 1905, her daughter, Anna, wanted to continue her work and establish a day to honor all mothers because she believed that there was no greater service to humanity than that of mothers. She chose the second Sunday in May because it was near the day her mother died. She became relentless in writing letters to governors to persuade them to declare that day as Mother’s Day. She wrote to President Theodore Roosevelt, prominent people, congressmen, anyone she thought could help with the cause. So, finally, on 8 May 1914 her dream came true. But she quickly became disillusioned by the crass commercialism that soon overwhelmed the Day. She spent decades attacking this commercialism any way that she could. She even went so far as to trademark Mother’s Day phrases. So, Anna’s life’s passion had two phases. The successful phase, creating Mother’s Day, taking aboubt nine years. The second and unsuccessful phase, taking over thirty years, was a war against the commercialism of Mother’s Day. In the 1940s with her resources dwindling, her eyesight fading, her general health ebbing, friends and associates put her in a sanitarium in West Chester PA where she died on 24 November 1948. She was no match for MassMarketAmerica. However, I think most of us overlook the crass commercialism of Mother’s Day and celebrate it just the way Anna Jarvis envisioned it.
I have always been curious as to the status mother had in our ancient, prehistoric society - when we were in the hunter - gatherer period. In the period before man knew that he had something to do with the creation of a new member of the clan. Even though she doesn’t get equal pay for equal work these days, we do hold mom in great esteem and her view of us is very important. When Warren Buffet was asked what advice he gave the presidents of the many companies he owns regarding ethics and morality in business decisions, he replied “I tell them to imagine that their mother would see their decision in the newspaper the next day.”
Every year at this time our local newspaper, Reno Gazette - Journal, gives participants the opportunity to post in the newspaper a “haiku” to their mother. Those who wish to participate in the event are encouraged to submit their haikus to the RGJ and many of them are printed in the Mother’s Day edition. A haiku is a form of poetry developed by the Japanese. The poems are three lines with a 5 - 7 - 5 syllable structure. In Japan they are usually inspired by nature. The form has been adopted and adapted by virtually every modern language. They are often inspired by nature, a moment of beauty, a poignant experience, etc. Japanese poets traditionally used haiku to capture a fleeting natural image or experience. Many Japanese people go for nature walks to find new poetry inspiration, and these walks are called ginko walks. Ginko is the Japanese word for bank. Get it? No? Well they are going to the bank seeking treasure. In this case the treasure is the new haiku. The Japanese language is very colorful in this regard, as well as very imprecise.   Perhaps the most famous Japanese haiku is by Matsuo Basho. Furuike ya                        Translation:  The old pond Kawazu tobikomu                                 a frog jumps in Mizu no oto                                           sound of water
Of course the translation does not follow the traditional structure. An example of the structure in English: very deep pow-der snow            5      a sum-mer eve-ning its deep blue sky all a-round       7      a mos-qui-to comes my way my skis make no sound              5      wham, I’m at peace again
Here are some examples from our Mother’s Day RGJ edition: Mom you are the best You shine like a diamond you are my flower                        Jeriah, 5th grader
You are the best mom you mean the world to me, mom Happy Mother’s Day                    Faithlynn, 5th grader
In good times and bad my mother’s love was constant she is my hero                              Julie Gourley
My mom, my soulmate I treasure the memories Always in my heart                      Julie Gourley
Always there for me she loved me like no other showed me how to love              Karen Rosselli
Doctor, cook, teacher hug to give, ear to listen there’s no one like mom              James Umbach
Through joy and laughter heartache, tears - a mother’s love unconditional                               Ruth VanDyke
Cancer took my mom missing you on Mother’s Day love you forever                           Franke Weintz
Somebody’s mother all alone and sad today a phone call away                        Ruth VanDyke
I will pen one myself: Her name was Mary yes, she was quite contrary we loved her anyhow
Here are a few for fun: Adopt a highway It seemed simple enough Then the tourists came                 by Vince Nobrega
Sausage, bacon, eggs mushrooms, tomatoes, green tea Atkins breakfast joy                      by Paul Trafferd
Football is my game don’t call me on Sat or Sun TV addiction
This year down the drain where did the one before go next year I’ll do it
It’s John three sixteen that’s the plan for all of us better get on board
To eat, not to eat it is a nice red apple just one little worm
To make a great stew take a limerick or two mix well with haiku
Rain, rain, go away boots leak, umbrella kaput can’t stand here all day
Bikini summer my glasses and walker, please I’ll take a good look Apple of my eye Joanne had the sweetest smile for another guy
A very loud noise started ringing from my clock who will fix breakfast
They said golden years can’t dance, can’t hear, cannot see did they pass me by
Pepperoni is ready add that to lots of cheese bits pizza is my dish
Electricity can make your hair stand on end warden told me so
You ask for my plan well, think I will save the world when I finish my beer
Basketball is fine college game has the spirit pros have the money
What do we know now baby steps forward we go where does this take us
A gentle snowfall covering everything no sound can be heard
Here’s my adaptation of Basho’s haiku to English while retaining the 5-7-5 structure:
The pond, still water A frog leaps into the air The sound of water
This precise and simple method of expression reminds me of another example of the beauty and art of brevity in expression. And that is the writer’s task of telling a story in six words. The origin or the time of origin of this art is not clear. One of the most famous is often attributed to Ernest Hemingway, however it cannot be authenticated: “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.” Perhaps the oldest is attributed to Julius Caesar when he was a Roman general. He sent a letter to the Roman Senate in 47 BC reporting a quick victory against Pharnaces II of Pontus at the Battle of Zela: “I came. I saw. I conquered.” Of course in the original Latin it is: Veni. Vidi. Vici. I can sadly pen one regarding contemporary life where millions of people die needlessly every year. I suppose you could say by a horrible suicide: I smoked, I suffered, I died. And a horrible suffering it can be.
Here are a few others: Wrong number says a familiar voice. You’re not a good artist, Adolph Torched the haystack, found the needle. Strangers. Friends. Best friends. Lovers. Strangers. Painfully he changes is to was. Born a twin, graduated only child. We’re lying in bed. She’s lying. Sorry soldier, shoes sold in pairs. I’m beside myself. Cloning machine works. Reading for Dummies. Somehow never sold. Home early? Whose car is that? We were. And then we weren’t. You win some. You lose some. Nothing to declare. Much to remember. Three blind mice. Cat had lunch. An only son. A folded flag. Alzheimer’s advantage: new friends every day. Logged out. Pulled plug. Found life. Passengers, this isn’t your captain speaking. Being offended doesn't make you right. Left handed woman seeks Mr. Right. What’s your return policy on rings? Goodby mission control. Thanks for trying. Eventually we all face the storm. He loved, she didn’t. How typical. She loved, he didn’t. Still typical. Used vice grip. Now in hot water. THC, LSD, DUI, CPR, DOA, RIP. Wind blows. Sails fill. Journey begins.
I’ll close by returning to the haiku, 5-7-5. Remember? I salute two family members who are going to Europe for the month of June, 2017. Mikonos, Skyros Going to the Greek islands London and Paris, too
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Try writing both a ‘haiku’ and a ‘six word story.’ Put your imagination and your creativity to work. You’ll enjoy it. It’ll be fun. I guarantee it.
