What to Expect When You’re Designing ...with Valerie Wheeler Interiors

VALERIE WHEELER has successfully transferred her popular design and lifestyle blog into a thriving interior design business, attracting exactly the type of clients in person that she did for years on social media.

Her bright, airy rooms and soothing aesthetics are often exactly the look her clients are seeking to balance out the chaos in other parts of their busy lives, often with young families.

If someone has never worked with an interior designer before, they might not know what to expect from the relationship. Valerie walked us through her process with her clients.

First contact: most clients submit an inquiry via her website, describing the project she wants to tackle. Valerie follows up on this inquiry with a phone call to make sure both parties seem like a good fit and to discuss pricing and availability. Everything is out in the open from the beginning.

In-home consultation: this more formal visit to the client’s home helps Valerie get a good look at what they’re going for by observing what’s already there - the existing architecture and color schemes, rooms they have that they may already like.

Inspiration sharing: Valerie encourages her clients to send images they like from Pinterest or other sources to give her visual examples of what the client is expecting.

Design proposal: After reviewing the client’s home and inspirational images, Valerie puts together a proposal that projects how long it will take and how much it will cost for her to oversee the design work to achieve the client’s goals. Once clients agree to the proposal, the design process really begins.

In-person delivery of a color story: Color stories are Valerie’s launching pads, and they are reviewed in person with the client. They include certain images she and the client have identified. She also incorporates paint colors, wallpaper, different textiles, hard finishes, or countertops, if required for the project. This gives the client a real snapshot of what direction she’s headed.

Throughout the process, Valerie prefers to have lots of small presentation meetings with actual material samples to make it easier for the client to make decisions and envision the big picture. “It’s very collaborative between me and my client. We’re making decisions together the whole way.”

Construction selection: At this meeting, Valerie and the client select finishes, then furniture and larger pieces, floor coverings and drapes, then accessories and artwork.

“I think my clients like that I stagger these meetings and break up the process,” she says. “It helps them wrap their heads around the choice that’s in front of them right now.”

Construction drawings: Valerie and her clients reviews construction drawings and more of the actual pieces that are going into the house, such as light fixtures, furniture, etc.

While construction is underway, Valerie maintains regular checkpoints to oversee the project and make sure construction is going according to her plans. If it’s a full home project, she tries to tackle one room at a time to respect the family living in the house during construction.

Final touches: on smaller scale projects, she has days where she brings in all the finishing touches - throw pillows, flowers, everything for that design reveal moment.

Hola! Can you guess what I'm making? I've been a bit quiet lately, I've not been making much, instead been busy with my girls and got a chance to have lunch with my bestie yesterday ❤. She works for a funeral home and it's crazy busy (still covid deaths etc 😥), so I don't see her as often as I'd like. I persuaded my girls to get their hair cut yesterday too. Although neither are girly girls, they insist on having super long hair, so every so often they need a good chop! @tomglynnehairbeauty has been cutting their hair for a few years and handles their quirks. He's a good'un 🙂. I'm looking forward to some pamper time for myself next week. Tom's doing my hair and I've having my minging feet pampered by @totalfoothealth in #colwynbay. All my babies are back home! I’m sure they’ve brought everybody else’s washing back with them but they are happy so that’s all that matters. The middle child has decided she wants to be vegan which is always handy at 5pm on a Sunday when the shops are shut and we are having chicken curry for tea! The 17yo is insisting on showing us copious amounts of hilarious videos of her weekend which is a sure sign that she’s enjoyed herself. Little T seems different somehow and much more confident- cub camp was definitely a success and she wants to go back.
