So Hybe won't put out physical albums, but of course their focus is on merchandise. I'm not surprised at all, given the company's direction, but is it that hard to focus on music and everything else in direct connection to that? Like an actual album? For music fans, that is much more valuable and would make more sense for the artist to have. Merchandise should be secondary, not the main focus of an album release. Given that even before Hobi's album release, the merchandise they created and released a few months prior proved to be a success, of course Hybe is doing this. The company knows that fans will buy everything, as long as it has the BTS name on it, or the name of the individual members. From a business point, it's smart. That is, if they only care about making money. But physical albums still sell. Is merchandise bringing that much more so it makes a significant differerence? The music should always be the number one priority.

David Jacobs, the suave and arrogant showbiz lawyer whose clients included The Beatles, Marlene Dietrich, Liberace and Judy Garland and who introduced Epstein to the gay scene in the capital was also a key player. Bullock calls it a “support network for the entertainment industry”. They needed it. While success brought money, attention and a certain freedom from the mores of contemporary society, it also caused problems.
Until the Sexual Offences Act of 1967 legalised homosexual acts between consenting adults over the age of 21, gay men had been confined to a crepuscular demi-monde and were confronted with a rise in prosecutions and several ‘sensational’ court cases well into the 1960s that had served to keep them in the closet rather than face misguided public opprobrium, the attention of the police and, frequently, blackmail.
The business uniform of single-breasted sharp suit and thin tie might have still ruled the roost but as the 1960s started to get underway, the author points out, “We really see people starting to come out of their shells and being a bit more flamboyant and less guarded in what they’re doing. People are kind of realising that within entertainment, and particularly rock and pop, you can probably get away with a little bit more”.
In other words, there was lots of sex and drugs to go with the rock n roll for successful gay men in the business and that necessarily meant existing within a network of people you could trust. “Certainly, there were parties at Brian Epstein’s house where he would just invite anyone around who he thought would be interesting and fun and just let them carry on while he would pick out who he fancied and take them off to another room,” says Bullock. “There was a certain amount of you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours in business terms but there was also a feeling that it was also much easier to play in that way, to host parties for this kind of network and for the people this network knew in a place where you were not likely to be arrested, not going to get busted or have the press hammering at your door.
“David Jacobs was always being asked to come and get people out of sticky situations,” explains Bullock. “Brian was blackmailed several times, often by the same ex-boyfriend… including on one occasion when this guy made off with some of the takings from the Beatles’ Candlestick Park gig in San Francisco and some pills, private papers and photographs before demanding $10,000 for their safe return. Blackmail was going on so often, they got used to having to pay-off people to shut them up but when you have so much money lying around I guess it’s not that much of an issue and certainly paying off the occasional blackmailer has got to be better than going to a club and being caught out and having your name splashed all over the newspapers.”

hi. genuinely how do you deal with this fandom? i am reaching burnt out levels of exhaustion dealing with its whining, witch hunting underdog complex. i get things have been rough but some of them really act out like children. worse, like headless chicken who can't be trusted in society. the level of pettiness infantilization and almost cult like behavior that some parts of it are exhibiting is honestly worrying. and that's without mentioning the feeling of entitlement to the members private moments. i just. so goddamn tired of it all. i have tired but i dont think i can keep interact with it as closely as I've been doing
and i cant speak for them, but I fear the members are also getting sick of it
I simply curate my fandom experience that benefits my level of well-being.
In the beginning, I will admit that I engaged in ridiculous fandom arguments over the idea that Jungkook was essentially carrying BTS on his back. This was back when people loved to make comments about wanting to see Jin enlisting and not being a part of the band because he was a "terrible singer and dancer". Or, that Joon was ugly. After a few months, I decided to step back and realize that these fandom wars were doing nothing but ruining my enjoyment of being an Army.
I decided to limit my time on Twitter because that was a continuous cesspool of nasty armchairs that had no problem putting a lil 7 in their display names while bashing any member that wasn't their bias. Twitter was also being overrun by the deluded shippers who thought that taekook or jikook were in this ill-fated secret relationship. I had to step back and stop before I ended up leaving the fandom altogether
(I will admit that when taemins album was dropping, I went and argued with people who were losing their shit over a song name and album cover💀😅. )
I decided that Tumblr was going to be the only platform where I interacted with the fandom, and while I have been out of the loop, I've still maintained the same love and enjoyment I had when I first joined the fandom.
I don't know what it's been like on other platforms in terms of the things you listed, but I can only imagine it's escalated in the 7 years I've been in this fandom. So many new and ignorant people enter the fandom to incite problems, so it's better to block and move on.
Frankly, it wouldn't be that much of an assumption to assume that they are annoyed with. I mean, it's been 10 years of nonsense. How many times has Jungkook had to change his phone number? How many times has Taehyung straight up said that he doesn't like the "fans" screaming in their faces at the airport? How many lives have we seen people asking Jungkook invasive questions? This man avoided the internet for a long time, and when he decides to give us multiple lives, some people act like self entitled brats and think they deserve an all-access pass into his life. The infantilization of jungkook alone probably upset him more than we know. I mean, one of their last fan signs had JK receiving baby-related things. He was in his early 20s for crying out loud. Talk about insulting.
Sorry for my novel, but I simply recommend cutting out the stressful things and focusing on maintaining your love for BTS and the fandom in a capacity that is healthy for you even if that means removing certain aspects.

Unpopular opinion: I actually don't think it's bad that shipping reflects how much it actually costs to send something to the other side of the country/world?
Granted, I'm lucky enough to live where shipping is $15, but I grew up in Japan (in the 90's/early 2000's looool) and I could never get anything shipped from the States for less than an exorbitant fee.
And Hybe absolutely sells a lot of overpriced junk, but I thought the photobook's price was reasonable given the eco-friendly materials. I was actually surprised when I saw the price.
But I could just be old lol
Well, for example, shipping fees have increased significantly since Covid and other current socio-political factors that have led to inflation as well. So everything is affected.
As to Jungkook's photobook, it was more expensive than BE. I remember paying less for that album. It's interesting that the shipping fees for Europe are really high with Weverse, but I ordered the photobook from the main local seller website and the shipping fees are insignificant. Like, a pack of cigs would cost me more, lol. And the product is still available on the site, while it easily gets sold out on weverse shop.
I think it boils down on what and how much is a person willing to spend money on merch. I'm only going to purchase JK and JM's photobook and I'm done. But I do find it unfortunate that so many fans feel a sort of "obligation" in buying a lot of stuff because that's how they should show appreciation and support. Sure, it's how artists make money, but it shouldn't become an extreme practice. And we know how many of the fans are still kids and teenagers who don't have their own job and their own money, but then they make demands from their parents. A bit of balance would be nice and Weverse not selling so much junk would be one step. These are my naive thoughts because I'm fully aware of commercialization and the commodification of music and how a business works 😄
