Reasons to love Blake Belladonna as a character from RWBY

First, this woman not only left behind her abuser and an increasingly toxic environment, which is extremely difficult all on its own, but she did it with no support system! And she even managed to save innocent lives in the process by cutting the rest of the train off.

But I'm not here to focus on that, so let's move forward to after V3. Blake leaves the team to try and protect them, which is undeniably a very bad decision even if it's understandable in the circumstances. She's pretty much borderline suicidal at this point and hates herself.

Blake thinks she's to blame for everything bad that happens around her (thanks to Adam) and she's not just convinced that her family and friends will hate her and never forgive her for any of it, she actively WANTS them to despise her. She's at her absolute lowest point.

The easiest thing for her to do would have been to give up. To keep running away because surely everyone already hates her so why try to fix anything. But she doesn't! She comes back to face her mistake and deliberately chooses to stay!! And some people still say she isn't brave.

Blake verbally promises not to leave again multiple times, but her actions speak even louder than her words. When they find out that Salem can't be killed she doesn't once consider losing hope. Even when Adam tries one final time to ruin her life she refuses to run away again.

Blake took the infinitely more difficult path of standing her ground and making up for her missteps, and has stuck by the team through every struggle since they reunited. She said she wasn't leaving again and she's more than proven that she meant it. That takes immense courage.

The fact that parts of the fandom will seriously write her off as a bad person or claim she didn't deserve to be forgiven when she's a traumatised teenager doing the best she can with the shitty hand she was dealt just doesn't sit right with me. The lack of empathy is saddening.

Blake isn’t flawless by any means, and no one ever will be, but why can't she be allowed to grow? Why can't she make well-intentioned mistakes and learn from them?  If we were all defined only by the worst choice we made then almost all of us would be terrible people.

I'm not even gonna get into the barely-disguised misogyny, homophobia, and victim blaming that often comes from those people. I'm just gonna finish by saying that you don't have to like Blake, but at least treat her with compassion and respect and acknowledge her many strengths.

This woman blamed herself so much for her mistakes PLUS everything Adam and the White Fang did that she flat out basically wanted to die because she thought she was just poison to everyone around her and STILL chose to try and make things better.

She ran away because she wrongly believed it was the only way to keep the people she loved safe and went back to them not only expecting zero forgiveness, but outright wishing that they'd hold it against her forever, and it's still not enough? It is cool though. That while Anime is seen as this foreign thing, alien to us in the west, a lot of titles took inspiration from other countries and even shared in our music. Cross-cultural moments are nice to hear about.

Language Genre of Tumblr

Seeing as how I am posting this on Tumblr, I find it fitting to study the language genre of Tumblr. All the screenshots I have are from the #todayontumblr hashtag. The #todayontumblr acts similarly to the explore page and gives a nice variety of different types of posts on Tumblr. As Tumblr acts as a sort of microblog, the techspeak can vary from individual to individual.

After looking through many posts and collecting screenshots of them, the language genre of Tumblr can be categorised based on the length of the post.

The use of proper punctuations and capitalisation, along with long paragraphs of text

The lack of proper punctuations and capitalisation, along with relatively short paragraphs of text

Abbreviations and short texts

Tumblr is very versatile in the type of posts one can post, thus there are large differences depending on the type of posts. The main type of posts found on Tumblr are microblogs, fanart, and memes. There is also fanfiction found on Tumblr, however, those tend to follow Standard English language conventions of storytelling. Those that write a microblog, tend to fall under category 1, while those that post art tend to fall under category 2. Finally, those that post memes tend to fall under category 3.

The use of proper punctuation and capitalisation, along with long paragraphs of text

As you can see from the above screenshots, these follow more of a microblog style, where the users share their lives or their thoughts on certain topics. These tend to use proper sentences and punctuation, following the conventions and languages of a proper blog (such as Blogger or WordPress).

Another thing of note is the use of hashtags on Tumblr. Hashtags are how one finds various posts and thus for posts on Tumblr, the hashtags will usually follow what the post is about.

2. The lack of capitalisation and proper punctuations, usually in relatively shorter paragraphs

The captions found on the above screenshots are from fanart posts. As the main content is the fanart itself, the captions are simply there to complement the art. These can include using captions to explain the art process, or to update about their life briefly. These captions tend to not have proper capitalisation and punctuation and tend to follow conventions on a photo-sharing platform such as Instagram. Certain features such as the capitalisation of words to express positive heightened emotions and abbreviations are seen as well.

An exception is a final screenshot above from user bloodraven55. They chose to present the caption in a short microblog format, using proper capitalisation and punctuation. However, the use of bullet points is a unique feature of Tumblr compared to other social media websites. Tumblr is a microblogging website first and foremost, that gives users the freedom to structure their captions however they wish to.

3. Abbreviations and short texts in memes

Tumblr is also filled with memes. As seen in the first photo, the meme language is short and does not follow standard sentence structures of English, instead opting for short phrases such as "___ be like". The rest of the captions, they are short as the main focus is on the meme, which is usually presented in a photo or a GIF. These captions, they do not follow proper punctuation and capitalisation, and use abbreviations, such as "btw".

It can be noted that punctuation structures such as "!?" and "..." which are not seen commonly on other social media websites are quite prevalent here on Tumblr. Perhaps due to the microblogging nature of Tumblr, these captions are influenced by that aspect as well.

With the rise of so many social media websites and platforms, CMC is not just one simple channel of communication like in the past with IRC or BBSes. In the past, the only way to communicate with others over the Internet is through forums and texts in MUDs. However, with the rise of so many different types of platforms, CMC has become a group of channels. Different social media platforms has a difference audience and the type of messages portrayed can be received differently depending on the type of platform used.

For a platform like Tumblr, there is a lot of freedom in the type of posts. Unlike photo-sharing platforms like Instagram or Snapchat, short simple text-based platforms like Twitter, or messaging apps like Telegram and Whatsapp, Tumblr as a platform is more versatile in the type of posts one can post.

Favorite Color: I... can't say?

Currently Reading: IDW's Sonic The Hedgehog run. Picked up the "Tangle & Whisper" trade and fell in love with those funky little lesbians (whether SEGA allows it to be said or not). Whisper speaks to the introvert in me and Tangle speaks to the part of me who can be a lot for others.

Last Song: Look Up! The Sky Is Falling by Michael Bradley as Yellow Dancer

Last Series: Naruto Part 1 and movies (Three is the best in terms of plot structure and character writing). And yeah, I saw the Filler Hell. Guess what? I. Liked. It. A lot.

Last Movie: Terra Willy. It's actually a animated movie from France that's all about a kid surviving for ten months on an alien planet. Starts off slow but grows. There's no obligatory villain, twist or otherwise, but nature to contend with.

I get that YouTubers need clout and profit so they focus on Disney/Pixar/Sony/etc. but the movies distributed by Kids Viva are honestly some of the best I've seen. Some are clearly "inspired" by Disney but even they blaze their own trail. Check out their catalogue if you hope to broaden your animation horizons if only a bit.

Working on: I'm planning a crossover between Miraculous Ladybug and The Jungle Book (specifically the 1989 Anime adaptation) and a crossover between Digimon Fusion & Fairy Tail with Lisanna Strauss as the lead.

The only "non-canon" F/F pairing in TV that never needed to be manipulated by the shipper fans to be a romance. Especially because some episodes were entirely maintext. For Xena and Gabrielle, love truly does exist.

Yeah not all of the allusions are confirmed but the main ones are, like Ruby being Red Riding Hood, Weiss being Snow White, Blake being Beauty and the Beast, and Yang being Goldilocks (but also linked to BatB through the Red Trailer lyrics). Adam being Gaston and the Cursed Rose is also confirmed in the companion book which I'd recommend reading when you catch up with the show!

There’s a book?? I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised, if the show is as big as I’ve heard. But I am surprised anyways.
