[Present Day] Birnin Zana, The Royal City, Wakanda
Zari blinked as the sun burned her eyes through her eyelids. She stretched tiredly, now remembering why Queen mother always told her to sleep on the west side of the palace. The large window views are breathtaking, but the sunrise blinded you in the morning if facing East. But east and west rooms were the last thing on her mind after last night. Zari sighed and snuggled into T’Challa’s embrace. Wait. “Get off of me,” Zari shouldered the king off of her before standing and turning to face him. “What happened to the bed you made on the floor?”
“It was uncomfortable,” the king groaned and sat up. “Sounds like a personal problem,” Zari raised an eyebrow, “I told you to go back to your own bed. When you decided to stay I expected you to respect my wishes and not touch me your majesty.”
“Zar, you cannot seriously still be upset,” the king sighed. Zari’s eyes hardened. “I’m going to wake Aiden, when we come back I want you out of my room.” She stormed out of the door and the young king sighed. “For Bast’s sake!”
The silence was tangible as Zari angrily cut into her breakfast. Aiden’s rambling was the only noise as his grandmother nodded along sneaking glances between the boy's parents. Shuri was silent as well, pushing her food around the plate. “Oops,” Aiden’s outburst pulled everyone’s attention.”I didn’t mean to,” he pouted, his lower lip trembling. A big sauce stain graced the front of his shirt and shorts. Zari sighed, “I know baby, lets go change your outfit.”
“Okay mommy,”Aiden allowed his grandmother to help him down out of his seat before Ramonda stopped the mother son duo. “Actually Shuri,” the teen looked up, “please take Aiden to change his clothes and wash up.”
“I do not think-“
“I’ve got it.”
The princess and Zari spoke at the same time. Ramonda raised an eyebrow, “I was not asking. Shuri, please take your nephew and help him change, I would like to talk to his parents alone. Is that alright my dear,” the Queen turned to Zari who nodded and settled back into her seat. Shuri glanced at her brother and Zari once more before taking Aiden’s hand and leading him out of the room.
“So who wants to speak first,” Ramonda sat back in her chair after dismissing the staff behind Aiden and Shuri. Zari glanced at the king with her arms folded. “Last night Zari and I had an altercation. A small disagreement really.”
“I disagree,” Zari glared. “It is just a simple test,” the king sighed, “You are reading more into this than you need to Zar.”
“Do not try to gaslight me T’Challa. If you don’t want Aiden to be yours just say that. Admit you made a mistake in coming to look for us and that you want your old life back!”
“Is that really what you think this is about?” The king shook his head.
“Wait,” Queen mother turned to her son, “You have doubts that Aiden is your son?”
The king sighed, “No I have no reason to doubt that Aiden is mine.”
“Then what are you all talking about?”
“He asked me for a paternity test,” Zari hissed. “If you know Aiden is yours, then why on earth do you need a test T’Challa?” Ramonda raised up in her seat, “I assumed that I would not need to tell my son, who has four degrees, what a paternity test was for.”
“I know what they are for I just…I couldn’t believe my own father would do this to me, let alone a girl he treated as his own daughter. I let others get into my head and cloud my thoughts.”
“Shuri?” The mother inferred, reflecting on how her daughter had been acting since her grandson and hopeful daughter in law arrived. “Yes, she was trying to come up with a reason for why Baba would hide all of this from us. Take my son from me. It’s not easy accepting that he did this for image and tradition only.”
“Just because you don’t want to accept something, does not make it any less true. It also does not give you the right to accuse someone, especially the mother of your child, of lying. Not to mention all that Zari went through with this child. You and Shuri both owe her an apology.” The mother shook her head reaching over the table and grabbing Zari’s hand. “That does not mean that you have to accept the apology.”
Zari nodded and looked at the clock, “I should go get Aiden and head to our appointment,” the young mother stood. “You are getting the test done?” Ramonda frowned. Zari nodded, “Yes, so we can avoid any future situations like this one.” She bowed her head before the Queen, ignored the king, and walked out of the room leaving a mother staring at her son. “Don’t let the image of your father that you and your sister are clinging to cloud your judgement T’Challa. He was a human, not a god.”
****
“Alright, arms up I guess,” Shuri sighed walking over to help Aiden into his new shirt. “Your name is Shuri?” Aiden’s muffled question floated out into the quiet room. “Uh Huh,” Shuri hummed once the shirt slipped over his head. “And you’re my baba’s sister?”
“Yep,” the teen smoothed Aiden’s collar. “So you’re my auntie?”
“Technically. What’s with the third degree?”
“The what?” Aiden twisted up his face and Shuri laughed. “It means what’s with all of the questions.”
“Ohh,” Aiden nodded. “Well my mommy taught me to ask questions when I don’t understand something.”
“Well what don’t you understand?” Shuri grabbed the jar of Shea butter and began massaging it into the child’s arms and legs. “You.” Aiden answered and Shuri’s heart sank, “Why don’t you understand me?”
“Well I thought you were mad at me for something. You’ve been avoiding me and I thought I had done something wrong. I’ve never had someone ignore me before. My mom said that we just needed to get to know each other better, so I was asking you questions to understand you. So you could stop being mad at me,” The kindergartner explained. The scientist quietly finished rubbing the Shea butter into his face and neck before placing it back where she found it. “I am sorry that I made you upset or think that I was mad at you,” she finally spoke. “So you’re not mad at me? You like me?” Aiden murmured. “I do,” Shuri nodded. It’s just that my baba passed away and he won’t be coming home. I was sad and mad about him leaving. I wasn't mad at you I promise.”
“Pinky promise?” Aiden stuck out his little finger. “Pinky promise,” Shuri smiled and wrapped her finger around his. He threw his arms around Shuri in a bear hug and the teen grinned, allowing herself to hug her nephew back for the first time. On an impulse she pressed a kiss to his forehead before someone cleared their throat. Shuri stepped away from Aiden as his mother walked into the room. “You ready buddy? Remember I said we were going to the doctor today?” Aiden nodded and Shuri looked away suddenly embarrassed by the fact that she was the reason he was going to an appointment today. “Bye Auntie,” Aiden waved and Shuri forced a smile for his sake. “Bye Aiden.”
“That’s a big tree!” Zari exclaimed as Aiden and his grandmother performed a song they had been practicing since lunch. The paternity test had gone fine and Zari was sure T’Challa had already submitted his sample as well. All that was left to do was to wait. “Mommy, you’ve gotta let me finish the song first,” Aiden pouted and Zari laughed. “Okay, my bad. I’ll be quiet now,” she smiled watching as her son and Ramonda started up once more. She hadn’t seen the king nor Shuri all day and quite frankly, she wasn’t looking forward to another meal like breakfast.
“And in that egg there was a snake, a very special snake. A rattling snake. And the snake was in the egg, and egg was on the branch, and the branch was on the limb, and the limb was on the tree, and the tree was in the bog, and the bog’s down in the valley oh!” Aiden and the queen moved through all of the song's hand motions laughing and running out of breath together. They clapped and danced around each other in circles, Aiden eventually ran over to his mother and pulled her into the fun. “Hey ho the rattlin’ bog, the bog down in the valley oh. Hey ho the rattlin’ bog the bog down in the valley oh!” The trio sang dropping to the ground in giggles.
“Again again!” Aiden squealed. Zari looked at T’Challa’s mother and shook her head. “I don’t think mama and grandma can go another round right now baby,” she laughed. “Maybe after dinner you can sing it with your baba,” Ramonda suggested sitting up. “And auntie,” Aiden declared.
“And Auntie what?” Shuri walked down the garden steps into the grassy area. “Grandma taught me a new song!” The kindergartener raced to Shuri’s arms, surprising the teen. “Be careful,” Zari warned calmly. “What song did you learn?” The scientist bent down to the child’s eye level.
“The rattlin bog!”
Shuri widened her eyes, “That’s my favorite!”
“Will you sing it with me?” Aiden jumped up and down. Shuri glanced at Zari, “Maybe in a minute, I actually wanted to talk to your mama.”
Aiden cocked his head, “Why? Mama is not a good conversationist,” Aiden failed at whispering. Shuri stifled her laughter as Zari’s mouth fell open in shock, “Aiden!”
Conversationalist, baby,” Ramonda corrected, holding in her own laughter. The older mother extended her hand to the young boy, “Let’s go see if we can find your baba and make him sing with you.”
Zari waved and watched as the queen walked away with her son. The former expatriate looked back at the teen who was wringing her hands. “Are you alright?” her face softened noting the girl’s stress. Shuri looked up and pushed some braids behind her shoulder, “Yeah, I just-” she plopped onto a bench next to Zari who had gestured for her, “I don’t really know where to start. Which is a first because usually I know everything,” the princess mumbled. Recognizing that the princess’s statement was serious, the young mother held in her laugh, “I see that Aiden calls you Auntie now.”
Shuri looked up briefly, “When I took him to get changed, he told me that he thought I was mad at him.”
“He is very observant,” Zari nodded, “I tried to tell him otherwise, but he knew. Quite frankly, I thought you were upset with him and myself as well.” Shuri groaned and leaned back on the bench, “I’ve been acting like such a brat. When I saw his face, so upset at the prospect of me being angry with him. It just all hit me at once. It is not that I do not like you or Aiden, it is just hard to accept this side of my father. I’ve grown up seeing him as this well loved and strong King who could do no wrong. Then, within two months of his unexpected death, I learned that he ruined not two but four lives. First he took an uncle, then a cousin, then a nephew from me. It was a lot to take in and I was in shock. I did not want to go through another mourning period for another family member. I wanted to save myself from that heartache and naively pushed that hurt on to you and Aiden.”
“I understand, and I figured that this was the cause of your animosity, but-“
“Not animosity. I just wanted to ignore you all in hopes that you’d go away I suppose.”
Silence filled the space between the two women. “You know,” Zari started, “I have forgiven your father.”
Shuri frowned, “You were not upset at all that happened? Even upset seems like too soft a word,” the teen huffed. Zari chuckled,” trust, I was very angry. But also heartbroken and depressed. However, I have forgiven him.”
“I don’t understand?”
“The first time I heard Aiden’s heartbeat, I sobbed hysterically for twenty minutes with no one but my doctor and her niece to comfort me. Even though I lost everything I knew and loved, there was a tiny human being relying on me. Any emotional weight would weigh on that child as well. So I wiped my face and forgave King T’Chaka, for Aiden. I was living for someone else now, and that meant making hard decisions for his sake. Everything I did was for Aiden’s benefit.”
“You were being a parent. A mother.”
“Just like your father was being a parent when he sent me away. It was not the right or fair thing to do, but he thought it was in the best interests of his son. He was protecting T’Challa from the hell and scandal that would have plagued him as a result of our union.”
“It was still not right. He had no right to take you from your family and T’Challa from the one he was building with you.”
“Right, but I like to imagine that it was not an easy decision for the king. I heard the regret in his voice every time we spoke on the phone, or he wrote a letter. I think the guilt was eating him alive, but parents will do anything, make any decision to protect their child. At the end of the day, that is what your father thought he was doing”
Zari wiped a stray tear from the teens cheek as she processed her emotions. “How are you so generous. You, out of all of us, have the most to be angry about.” Shuri peeked up through tears. “Forgive his humanness, not for him but for your emotional health. If I can do it, with all of the cruelty I’ve endured, you will be able to do it in time as well. It doesn’t happen overnight, but you’ll find that inner peace eventually. Day by day.”
Zari pulled the princess into a hug. “I am so sorry for how I treated you and Aiden. I already apologized to him, but I admit I had no good reason to do so. I have no idea how to make it better.”
“Just love on Aiden. He’s never had an actual family to do that for him. I’ve already forgiven you,” Zari brushed some braids off of Shuri’s neck and cupped her cheek,” I know that you are hurting, but it will get better as soon as you forgive him. For me and for you uncle, and cousin.”
The princess nodded. “I am more specifically sorry for asking T’Challa to get a paternity test.”
Zari sighed, “I know, I forgave you for it as soon as your brother told me. I already knew why. But you should know that I would never try to deceive your brother like that. That is why we fell in love, why your parents let me get so close. I wasn’t with him for money or the lifestyle he could bring. Quite frankly, I considered breaking up with him many times because of the role I would have to fill as his wife was daunting. However, everytime I doubted him, he would remind me why I loved the person he was and I decided that the person was more valuable than all the hardships that came with the title.”
“I hope I find a relationship like yours.” Shuri sighed. Zari laughed, “You will in time, but make it better than ours. The people in a relationship aren’t perfect so neither can their union be.”
“So you aren’t upset with T’Challa anymore?”
Zari groaned, “Now I didn’t say all of that.”
“Please don’t be upset with him. He was just doing what I suggested, he even declared that he would never get one because he trusted you. He yelled at me.”
“No offense Shuri but you are still a young adult, he may have started off defending me. But at the end of the day he still asked. Even though he was there that night and we both suspected that I might get pregnant. He knew me better than you do and still chose to listen to you over me. Then, once he realized he was wrong and that I was upset he chose to make it seem like I was overreacting instead of taking responsibility for his lapse in judgement. Like I was being irrational after all I’ve been through with your father. As a partner, a future spouse, I expect more from T’Challa and he’s gonna have to do more to earn my forgiveness right now.”
“I understand, but he is not used to having to apologize to anyone,” the teen explained. “Oh I know,” Zari smirked, “but he’s gonna have to get used to it because I do not care that he is a king. To me he is just T’Challa, and T’Challa owes me an apology.”
****
“Aiden, not too far,” Zari called as her son raced over to a food stall. “I swear he is always hungry.”
T’Challa waved the Dora Milaje over to follow the boy and pay for whatever he wanted, “he gets that from his father.” He beamed watching his son point out the treat of his choice from the window. “Hmm,” Zari hummed and looked around the market.
“Can we talk?” The king sighed, reaching out to stop Zari from talking. “About what?” The mother turned to face the king, looking up into his eyes. “You know what we need to talk about Zar,” he sighed. “Refresh my memory,” she insisted.
“You are enjoying this,” the king chuckled at the smirk on her lips. “I suppose,” she shrugged, “either way I’ve earned it.”
T’Challa nodded and cleared his throat, “I was wrong to ask you for the test. I know Aiden is my son and I had no right to throw that in your face because I didn’t want to admit my father’s mistake. I also had no right to accuse you of overreacting. I do not want you to feel that I went and got you and Aiden to play savior,” the king grabbed Zari’s hands, “I genuinely want to be in his life. In my son’s life and yours as well. I will work every day to show you how much you mean to me and I will consistently put your feelings about everyone else’s from here on out.”
“Thank you for your apology,” Zari squeezed his hands before letting them go and continuing to walk on. “Wait,” T’Challa rushed to catch up, “that is it? I am not forgiven?”
“Words are nice T’Challa, but I need action. I think we need to grow as the new people we are. We aren’t in high school anymore. It’s been five years and now we have a son together. We’ve got to relearn and make up for the lost time. I think we should take it slow.”
“So you won’t move back into the room?”
Zari shook her head, “I don’t think that’s a good idea right now.”
“Zari-“
“I know you’re not used to apologizing T’Challa, but you can’t just put an apology out there and expect that everything will go back to normal. Your lapse in judgment revealed some sore spots in our relationship. If I just jumped back in your bed, I’d be slapping a bandaid on a deep wound. So let’s spend a little time slowing down and getting to know each other again.”
The king sighed, “Can I at least take you out on a date?”
“I’ll think about it,” the mother promised and walked off to join her son who was eating his pastry from the stall.
“Kumkani,” one of the Dora called out to T’Challa. The king glanced at Zari who shooed him off and followed after Aiden. “You have a visitor,” the woman announced, a nervous look in her eye. T’Challa raised an eyebrow, “someone is at the palace?”
The soldier nodded, “The jabari tribe, and they have brought a bride.” The father paled. “Stay here with them please. Keep them away for as long as you can,” he ordered and rushed off to the city’s center.
“Great Gorilla M’Baku,” T’Challa greeted as he stepped into the throne room. “King T’Challa, you have kept us waiting, were you not anticipating our visit?”
The man artfully side stepped M’Baku’s question. “I apologize for my tardiness. I hear you have brought a bride?”
“Yes, Alua Fonzana, daughter of Elua and Temi Fonzana of the Jabari. The best we as a tribe have to offer, you have my word.” The king did not miss the sadness that laced the end of M’Baku’s introduction. T’Challa inclines his head and offered her a smile. “I appreciate the offer, but there are new circumstances that might call for an amendment of our agreement.”
“Eh we have only been here ten minutes, and you are already going back on your word.”
“Trust I do not suggest this lightly but I have a son. He and his mother were separated from me due to some particular circumstances but we have been recently reunited.”
“Alua has wonderful maternal instincts and aspirations, I am sure she would make a great mother-figure for your son!” A jabari elder insisted. “I am not sure you understand-“
“I agree!” M’Baku bellowed over him, “Alua is great with children! She will make a fine wife!”
“Wife?!” A new voice startled the party in the room. T’Challa felt his heart sink. He was still in the panther enclosure with Zari, and this development was not going to help his case.”
“Zari I can explain-“
“Yes! This is to be the new Queen of Wakanda!”Cheers erupted from the Jabari delegation.
“May I speak in my own throne room?” T’Challa bellowed, causing everyone to quiet down to a murmur. T’Challa could see the tension in Zari’s face and prayed that he could smooth this over before it shut her back off from him. Before he could open his mouth Zari walked over to Alua and hugged her. “It is very nice to meet you, I look forward to getting to know you more since you will be spending a lot of time with my son.”
The king locked his jaw to keep it from falling open in shock. Alua offered a small smile in return as Zari bowed to the king and elders before walking out of the room. Refusing to meet T’Challa’s eyes.
“Zar,wait!” The king chased who he hoped was still his girlfriend out to her favorite spot in the gardens. “I should’ve known,” Zari shook her head as she continued to make her way through the maze of flowers. “Zari please wait. You don’t understand.”
“Know, I should’ve known,” the woman turned to face the father of her child, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Should’ve known what?” T’Challa slowed down to pull her closer but she just shook her head. “Us, we could never work. Even when we were teens-“
“What do you mean, we can work love. We will work.” T’Challa panicked. Zari began to sob and pushed the king off.
“Even in highschool- is wanting to work and being able to work are two separate things T’Challa.”
“You don’t love me?”
Zari allowed the king to pull her back in, “T’Challa Udaku, I love you more than life itself. I love you with every fiber of my being. I love you more than I should,” Zari choked up, “You gave me my son. You made me feel like a princess. You made me feel beautiful and loved. You still do T’Challa, but you are a prince. I’m a nobody, I will never fully understand-“
“You will when you marry me Zari, please don’t give up.”
“You are not mine to marry T’Challa. You promised yourself to someone else-“
“For the betterment of my country. Not because I love her. I only made the deal because I never thought I’d see you again. If I’d known-“
“But you didn’t T’Challa. And you gave someone your word. Who am I to stand in the way of the good of Wakanda?” Tears poured down Zari’s cheeks. T’Challa pressed a kiss to her forehead as his thumbs wiped away each drop.
“You are the woman their king is in love with. The mother of the heir to the throne Zari. You are everything. I can make another deal with the Jabari, but there will never be another you.”'

[5 Weeks Ago] Birnin Zana, The Royal City, Wakanda
The palace was silent as the royal family sorted through the work in the office. “I am going to get some lunch. Did either of you want anything?” Shuri stood filing away the papers she had sorted through. “No,” Ramonda glanced up sadly at her youngest child, “Thank you though.”
“Brother,” the teen pulled the newly coronated king out of his thoughts. “No, I am fine. I want to get through this safe before I take a break for the day.” The king stood from his father’s chair and walked over to the desk, looking for the holographic keypad. “Very well. I am gonna head down to my lab after I eat, if I am excused, mama?”
Ramonda nodded silently and the teen kissed the crown of her head before leaving. The Queen watched her son fiddle with the safe before speaking,” Try your ring,”  She stood and glided over to where he stood. “One time, Your father asked me to grab something from the safe, and that is when I realized the keypad and lock did not work. Place your ring under the lock projector.” With an eyebrow raised, T’challa let the light flow over his ring before the door clicked open. His mother smiled as the king pulled the small safe open. “You are welcome,” the Queen Mother laughed. T’Challa chuckled and grabbed the surprisingly small stack of papers out of the metal box. A small stack of letters caught his attention. “Will you take your father’s office? Or remodel your own?” The Queen asked, looking up when she did not receive an answer. “T’Challa?”
“I am sorry. What did you ask Mama?” The king continued to shuffle through the envelopes, his frown deepening with each subsequent pass. “What on earth are you reading?” The Queen frowned and reached for an envelope. “These letters, I know this address. I saw a deed for it the last time I sorted through these papers with baba.”
“Well, what did he say about them? I am sure it is just a war dog-” The queen is cut off as T’Challa shot out of his seat. He slipped his shoes on and ran out of the room. “For Bast’s sake,” Ramonda sighed and grabbed the letters her son dropped. A picture of a small boy and a pair of graduation tickets fall out of the envelope. In the photo, the child was smiling, holding a backpack and grinning, his smile just like T’Challa’s. The longer she stared, the more obvious the connection became. The mother flipped over the picture and read Aiden’s First Day of School. Her heart sank as she opened the letter and saw the signature at the bottom, “Zari. Oh, my love, what have you done T’Chaka?” Tears formed in Ramonda’s eyes as she began to look around for more clues as to what had transpired all the while her mind kept repeating. My son has a son.
The roaring of a jet caught her attention as it shot past the palace window. She sighed realizing her son left to walk into a situation he hardly understood. Ramonda plopped back into her husband’s desk chair. “I thought we promised not to hide anything from each other?” Her hands ran over the desk before she found the compartment latch she was looking for. The wooden top popped off and she reached in. Sorting through the papers, she found the deed to the townhouse and started to connect the dates. The more  she searched her husband’s files the picture became even more clear. “But what is a marriage without secrets,” the woman sighed, dropping her head into her hands.
[Present Day] New York City, New York, United States of America
“What are you doing?”
Zari looks up to find Melanie frowning from the doorway. “I’m just,” she stutters as her partner walks in, “Supposed to be on a flight back home with your son and boyfriend,” Melanie drops her bags and raises an eyebrow. Zari’s gaze flits between the door, her phone, the costumes, and Melanie. “Does T’Challa know you are here?”
Tears form in the young mother’s eyes before she can stop them. A sob forces its way out of her throat and soon Melanie’s arms engulf her in a hug. “Okay okay,” the brown-skinned seamstress soothes her best friend. “Tell mama all about it child,” Melanie sings. A laugh mixes with a sob as Zari tries to catch her breath. A few minutes later her breathing evened out and the two women were rocking together slowly. “You ready to tell me what that was all about?”
Zari sighs and looks up at her best friend, “I’m terrified to go home.”
“Well, I got that,” Melanie laughs and Zari does too. “Have you told T’Challa how you feel?”
“We talked about it last weekend, but I thought that I could come here and calm my nerves before flying out.”
“This can’t be your only safe haven love. If T’Challa knows you are nervous, I’m sure he’d be more than willing to help ground you.”
Zari sighs, “I know. But he and Aiden. They’re so excited. Aiden has been learning Xhosa and how to greet his grandmother and aunt and-“ the young mother teared up, “I just feel like I’m ruining everything. I can’t seem to get excited about going home. I’m terrified.”
“I know, but you have to be kinder to yourself. You are a survivor Zari. Wakanda comes with a lot of baggage for you. It’s ground zero for some of the worst moments of your life.
In spite of that, you agreed to go to make your son happy. You’re putting his needs before yours and that’s what a true mother does.” Melanie reassured. “Uh Zar,” Renee popped her head in the room, “your boyfriend is outside waiting. Aiden is asleep so he can’t come in.”
The seamstress nodded and dropped her head into her hands. “Thank you, tell him I’ll be out in a second.”
The actress glanced at Melanie who nodded, letting her know she could handle this. Melanie watched Renee leave her attention moving to her partner’s groan. “I’m so stupid. I’ve ruined the whole day and we haven’t even left yet. Maybe I should just let them go and have fun together,” she reasoned. “Nah. You’re getting on that plane if I have to carry you myself.  Your kindergartener is going to a whole new continent  for the first time with a father he just met. You cannot leave him alone in this. He needs you.”
Melanie packed away the tools Zari had pulled out. She grabbed her best friend's bag and held it out. “Chop chop, lets go.” The mother stood and grabbed the bag. “I’m making the right decision right?”
“I honestly don’t know, but if it’s not the right one, it’s a damn good one.” Melanie pushed her through the backstage corridors and out onto the front stairs of the theatre. T’Challa stood at the bottom of the stairs, a sleeping Aiden on his shoulders. His body visibly relaxed once he realized Zari was safe. The seamstress pulled her best friend in for a final hug, guilt settling in her stomach when she realized how worried T’Challa must’ve been. For the first time he’d had to get Aiden together alone and figure out where his girlfriend had disappeared too. When she popped down the final step, T’Challa pulled her into a hug. “Please don’t do that. I thought I’d lost you again, and my heart cannot take that.” Zari nodded into the embrace,” I’m so sorry,” she sniffed. “I put your bags in the car if you’re okay with leaving from here, we can talk on the plane.” The father explained.
The younger couple looked up as clapping rained down, “KISS kiss,” someone chanted and soon the whole crowd joined in. All the actors, dancers, and crew stood on the theatre steps laughing. Most still in their coats suggesting they never made it into the building. T’Challa pecked Zari’s lips and the whooping intensified. “Don't you people have jobs?,” Zari yelled and some people chuckled. “Okay back to work, you’re all officially late,” Lin called, corralling the now moaning group into the theatre. “Be safe,” he called over his shoulder. Melanie threw in one final wave before she too headed inside.
“I’m sorry again, I didn’t mean to worry you,” Zari repeated and the king nodded. “I know, but with our history, you disappearing when you need space without telling me, it’s not going to work. My heart will stop every time guaranteed.” T’Challa strapped Aiden into his seat before opening the door for Zari to get in. He followed suit and the driver pulled away from the curb.  “I was not thinking,” Zari started explaining, “I just needed to get out of the house.”
“Is going home still bothering you? We can postpone the trip, head to a different location instead?”
“No you and Aiden have been so excited about this trip. That’s why I didn’t say anything. I don’t wanna ruin the trip with my irrational fears.”
“They aren’t irrational Zari. They are not random, and they are not unfounded. You were taken from your home in the middle of the night, sent to a new continent and country, then gave birth to your son alone at 18. Who would not be nervous to go back home?”
“How are you so calm about this? I feel like I’m close to coming undone every moment I spend thinking about it.”
The king sighed, “I am afraid too, but I choose to focus on Aiden. He’s gonna meet my mother, see where I grow up, and see a place where he will spend time growing up. Is there not one thing you ever wished you could’ve done with him?”
“When I was young, mama used to take me to the cliffs and lull me to sleep singing lullabies into the air beyond the edge and it would echo back up. I always said I’d do the same for my children,” a smile etched its way into Zari’s features. The king grinned, “So grab onto that image and hold it. When you feel like running away on this trip, hold onto that goal as your safe place. Imagine yourself at the falls singing our son to sleep.”
“And breathe,” Zari grabbed the King’s hand, “yes-“ he grinned, “don’t forget to breathe.”
****
“What is your happy place?” Zari asked as the jet cruised over the Atlantic Ocean.
“Huh,” the king turned to face the mother of his son. “The falls are the memory that keeps me from running, what keeps you here? Safe from the panic attacks we are prone to?”
“You are going to laugh,” the king chuckled. “I’ll do my best not to,” Zari promised leaning into his shoulder. “Do you remember the winter formal senior year?”
Zari nodded, “My mom was so worried when we decided to wear white. She was convinced people would think we looked like one of those American wedding movies. Like we were making a statement,” Zari chuckled. The king nodded and pulled her closer on the long seat, “I know we weren’t making a statement at first. But by the end of that night I was. I knew what I wanted, and when you went missing, that picture became my safe place. When I thought I’d never see you again, I used to imagine that it was our wedding photo. That was my happy place, it still is.”
Butterflies erupted in Zari’s stomach and she let a smile stretch over her face, “You play your cards right, you might now have to imagine much longer,” she grinned and laughed at the shocked expression on T’Challa’s face. A few hours later T’Challa excused himself to wake Aiden and get him ready as the ship neared Wakandan airspace. Zari twisted her fingers together as she stood and walked closer to the cockpit. She’d never seen her home country from the outside. The ship headed towards a grove of trees and broke through the country’s barrier. Her anxiety levels dropped as the familiar scene of the border tribe villages came into view. Children ran chasing the jet and waved desperately. Zari waved back as best as she could before the aircraft zoomed out of their sight. The city unfurled in front of the ship and the pilot set her sights on their destination. Zari took a deep breath when the jet passed her neighborhood and slowed to make its descent over the castle.
“Woah, Baba this is where you live?” Aiden ran past his mother and pressed his face to the glass. “Don’t put your mouth on the glass Aiden,” Zari gently reprimanded. The boy leaned back, but his eyes stayed glued to the castle as they landed on the tarmac.
“Are you alright?”
Zari nodded. “I just need a second.” The king nodded and kissed her forehead. They stood together watching their son ramble excitedly about everything he was seeing. T’Challa pulled his love into his arms and she rested her head on his chest.
****
“What is taking him so long?” Shuri leaned over to ask her mother. The jet had been sitting on the tarmac for ten minutes now. The luggage had been unloaded and even the pilot had disembarked. Ramonda sighed. She had not told her daughter what she and her son had learned that led him to leave so abruptly. She herself was not sure of how to feel about the bits and pieces that she knew, and during this period of grieving any reason to be upset with her father, or his legacy, is not what Shuri needed.
Quite frankly, Ramonda had no idea what was keeping her son. She had a sliver of hope that he had found Zari and their son, but a lot could change in five years and that sweet girl could want absolutely nothing to do with their family, and no one could blame her.
“Who is that?” Shuri’s question interrupted the Queen’s thoughts. She pulled the gaze she was not aware had drifted, back to the ship and felt tears burn her eyes. She recognized the young woman walking down the stairs beside her son and the child he was holding in his arms. “He went on a rescue mission?” Shuri’s second question also went unanswered as the queen abruptly ran towards the young woman to pull her into a hug. Tears rolled down Ramonda’s cheeks. Zari felt herself relax into the familiar embrace and fought her own tears. “Oh my love I am so sorry,” the queen apologized, pulling back to look her in the eyes. “You knew,” Zari frowned, getting ready to pull away, but Ramonda held firm. “I found out when T’Challa did, but unlike him,” she glanced at her son,” I stayed and tried to piece together what happened before heading out into the unknown. Fury blazing,” the queen raised and eyebrow in his direction and he gulped, setting down Aiden who had begun to wriggle in his hold. “I realize the error of my ways now,” the king replied, running his hands together. “I am sure you do,” his mother hummed before pulling Zari into another hug. “I am so glad you are here sweet girl,” Ramonda sighed gently cupping Zari’s cheek and the woman nodded. “I cannot say that I was not a little apprehensive. I thought you all would hate me.”
“If it is any consolation,” the queen let her hand drop to squeeze Zari’s, “I was afraid you would hate us,” she admitted.
“It was not your fault. I always understood that,” Zari reassured. Ramonda sighed and squeezed her hand. “We will talk later. Catch up.”
The older woman’s regal gaze turned to Aiden,“ And you must be Aiden?” She grinned. The kindergartener nodded and latched onto his mother’s leg. “Aiden,” his father started, “this is your grandmother or umakhulu. She is my mother or umama,” the king explained gently pulling his son away from his mother and bringing him closer to his grandmother. “May I have a hug?” Ramonda opened her arms and the kindergartener giggled and obliged. “I always wanted a grandma,” he revealed when Ramonda settled him on her hips. “What a coincidence, I have always wanted a grandson!”
The two broke into giggles before she set him back on the ground. “Is that Shuri?” Zari asked, nodding towards the teen who stood at the end of the tarmac watching the reunion. “Yes, my baby girl is all grownup . She’ll graduate this year to head off to university.”
“She’s only what sixteen?” Zari asked then grinned, “She must be smarter than you,” Zari teased the king. “Yeah yeah,” he waved away. He and his mother lead the two over to Shuri. Zari raised both palms in a formal greeting and curtsied. “Princess,” Zari smiled. Shuri bowed her head in acknowledgment but the confusion never left her face. “Shuri, this is Zari, my girlfriend. She was around a lot when you were younger but she went missing five years ago. And our son, Aiden.” The little boy waved back when the teenager waved at him. “Hello, I apologize I don’t remember much, and I do not understand,” she shook her head looking back between her mother, brother, nephew and sister in law she guessed. Zari nodded as the Queen spoke, “That is more than understandable. Why don’t we all sit down for a late lunch, we have much to discuss.” Ramonda ushered everyone inside to the dining hall. Aiden walked along with his aunt and grandmother as his parents trailed behind.
“Everything looks the same,” Zari noted as they walked. “I have not had the heart to make any changes since he passed. We were in the process of cleaning out his office when I came to find you.”
“Will you take his office? I assume you have one of your own?” You were so excited to re-decorate it after graduation. We were to go shopping together,” Zari reminisced.
“I am not sure, I will probably just keep my own. I do not want to be in any space that was his right now,” the king sighed. Zari frowned and bit her lip, “What is troubling you?” T’Challa stopped walking and grabbed her hands.
“I hate to think that my situation has driven a wedge between you and your father after his death. You should only be having good thoughts right now.”
“Zar, none of this is your fault. He made the decision to keep my son from me. Intentionally. I just need time to come to terms with that. My own father kept me from being present in my first born’s life.” The king frowned, “He  brought this on himself. It is just hard because I will never get to ask him why.” The designer nodded and the couple continued walking both deep in thought.
“You may all be dismissed,” Ramonda smiled as she carried in the family’s lunch. With some hesitation and additional reassurance, the queen walked all of the servants out of the dining room before shutting the door and moving her family into the informal dining room. Quickly shutting those doors as well.  “Sometimes I swear they forget I did have a life outside of this palace before I married your father. I can serve a simple lunch,” the queen muttered before heading back over to the table. “They just want to help mama,” T’Challa laughed as the woman huffed. “I know, but I am tired of everyone following me around like I am an invalid anytime I want to do something myself. I lost a husband, not an arm!” The queen placed the last plate in front of Aiden before settling into her own seat and taking a deep breath. “And as much as those two things hurt, I will be fine,” she looked up at her children’s frowns and Zari’s sad smile. She reached over and grabbed both T’Challa and Shuri’s hands. “I will be fine,” she reassured, “Besides, soon enough I will be moving out anyway. To make room for the next royal couple to start,” she smirked and glanced down at Aiden, “or finish making their own family.”
T’Challa frowned and went to speak before his mother cut him off, “you cannot change my mind T’Challa. You and Zari, or whomever you marry need space to be young and in love without your mother being here to hear every second of it. Your grandparents moved out for your father and I. I shall do the same. Shuri may do whatever she so chooses, but we do not need to worry about that matter for the moment. Zari, Aiden, you must be starved. Why don’t we all eat.”
“Aiden, finish your vegetables, not just the fruit,” Zari reminded as her son pushed around the food on his plate. Reluctantly he finished the portions left and his mom smiled down at him. “So, Zari,” Ramonda started, “I know very little about the circumstances involving your disappearance just that you were pregnant, graduated, lived in New York City, and that my husband orchestrated the whole thing.”
“What? Baba would never-“ Shuri started. “Shuri,” her brother interrupted her and shook his head. He gestured for Zari to start and the woman offered the princess a sad smile, but the teen only turned her hurt expression the other way. “Umm, is there somewhere Aiden could go? I don’t want him hearing this,” the mother whispered to the king who excused himself and the little boy, “Let’s go see if you can help the chef make dinner,” he pulled Aiden up into his arms and they headed to the kitchen attached to the dining room. The three women sat in awkward silence as Shuri avoided looking at the guest. “Are you still into biology? It was your favorite thing to talk about when you were younger-“
“I know. I was there,” Shuri glanced at Zari. “Shuri Udaku,” Ramonda hissed and Zari shook her head letting the Queen know it was fine. She understood, she’d anticipated this reaction from both her and Ramonda. She wouldn’t want to accept that her father had done something like this either. The teen sighed, “My favorite area of study is biochemistry. So yes and no, but I plan to minor in physics in university.”
Zari nodded, surprised to get so much information. T’Challa returned Aiden less and the room descended into quiet once more. “Well, as you know,” Zari started. “I was pregnant with Aiden and I had planned to tell T’Challa after brunch the next morning. The day before, I had run into the king leaving the doctor appointment that had confirmed I was expecting. Somehow the king knew as well and told me congratulations when he spotted me in the hall of the hospital. When I confirmed the news reluctantly, he,” Zari paused dreading continuing her story, “he said that I should not tell T’Challa because he needed no hindrance in becoming king. When I said that I refused to keep this from you, he offered me a private  abortion that he would pay for. Again I refused and told him that you deserved to know about your child. He finally agreed and I thought that the matter was settled. Until that night. Some guards showed up at my house and took me and Isha from our parent’s home. We were driven to some building way off of the road and outside of the city. From there I was put on a plane, and I do not know what happened to Isha. I woke up in New York City and was told that the king had found me a war dog doctor, a house, and offered me the choice of any institution in the city all expenses covered. I had Aiden and now we’re here.” Zari sighed and glanced at everyone’s faces. Each seemed to be lost in their own world. T’Challa and the Queen seemed to be reflecting on some experience, while silent angry tears trickled down Shuri’s face.
“I hate to, but I must,” Ramonda broke everyone’s focus, “I saw that he sent you monthly allowances for Aiden, what did you do with that?”
“I put it in a college fund for Aiden and have never touched any of it. Initially I sent the checks back, until the king wrote and wished that I would
allow him to provide for his grandson.” The queen nodded but the king’s jaw clenched, “That should have been me providing,” he mumbled. Zari nodded sadly, taking his hand in hers. The teen glanced at their intertwined hands and stormed out of the room. Zari watched her go sadly feeling like she’d been kicked in the gut. Shuri had been like the little sister she’d never had, and she’d loved every second of it. Now the young woman hated her.
“She will come around,” Ramonda grabbed Zari’s freehand, “This news is hard for all of us”
“I know I just wish I did not have to be the one to bear it. I wish his majesty was here to explain himself. The last thing I want is for you all to be angry with him during this period of mourning.”
“If I know my husband like I feel I do, he’d be glad that this family is being put back together in his absence. Bast rest his soul, he was ‘image over everything’ but  these past few years, that had started to shift slightly. Who's to say whether or not he would ever have been honest and told us. But I’m sure he is glad that we are doing this. You needed closure too and T’Challa needed his son.”
“I will go check on Shuri,” T’Challa kissed Zari, then his mother’s forehead before following his younger sister out of the room. “I should probably go check on Aiden.” Zari stood and the queen followed. “Help me with these dishes and we’ll both go check on him. We should probably take a walk too, give Shuri and T’Challa some space.”
“Can we go to the falls? It is almost his nap time and I’ve always wanted to sing him to sleep by the falls. My mother used to do that with me.”
Ramonda grinned and hooked her arm through Zari’s. “That sounds lovely, I’ll teach you some that I know.”
****
“Shuri why are you acting like this?” The king huffed as he walked into her lab. “Why am I acting like this?” The teen exclaimed moving from behind her desk to face him, “Why are you and mama acting like this! You truly believe the word of this stranger? You believe that baba practically threw her out of Wakanda for being pregnant with your son? Even if baba threw her out, are you sure it is not because the boy is not yours? She could’ve been spreading her legs for-“
“That is enough!” T’Challa slammed his palm on the table, interrupting Shuri’s rambling. I get that you are upset and hurting. For Bast sake, I am hurt by everything too Shuri! But I will not allow you to degrade my girlfriend and the mother of my son!”
“Alleged son!” The scientist shot back.
“He is mine! And you will respect him and Zari as members of this family!” The king roared and the princess walked back around and took a seat, staring at him coldly as she gathered her thoughts. “All I am saying is that baba had to have a reason. The only one I can think of is that the baby was not yours and she was trying to pin it on you. You need to get a paternity test or I will do one,” Shuri threatened before walking away deeper into the lab.  “Shuri do not touch my son!” He called after her.
The king ran a hand over his face before returning to his office. He contemplated all of his options and sighed as Shuri’s logic got the better of him. He didn’t want to believe it, but he also did not want to believe that his father could send Zari away. With his mind made up he glanced at the clock realizing he’d missed dinner. He walked up to his old bedroom where he’d had Aiden’s stuff taken and as expected he found his girlfriend maneuvering his sleeping form into some pajamas. He watched for a few moments before noticing her struggling to get the shirt over his head. “Would you like some help?” He whispered moving closer.  Zari smiled up at him tiredly and they moved together to finally pull the shirt over the kindergartener’s head. They tucked him under the covers and Zari traced the outline of his head and face. “You gave my baby your big ass head and ears,” Zari chuckled, and the king playfully bumped her shoulder. “Let’s take a walk,” he grabbed her hand before kissing his son’s forehead, dreading the conversation he was about to start. The couple wandered out into the garden where the breeze and moonlight swept across their faces.
“How was your talk with Shuri?” Zari broke the silence as they waved at a guard stationed in the garden. The king stared off in the distance, “Not well,” he finally admitted and watched his girlfriend’s face fall. He loved how close she and Shuri used to be, and he knew that it was hurting her that her “mini me” was being so hostile. “She is just hurting right now. Baba just passed and now she’s learning an ugly truth so she’s lashing out. You know that it is nothing personal against you.”
“I understand. Does not make it hurt less. Does she think I am lying?”
“Partially, she believes that Aiden is not mine,”the king started. “Oh,” Zari offered as they continued on. “She’s trying to find a good reason to explain why our father would have sent you away, and that’s what she came up with.”
“Well as long as you and your mother know, she’ll come around eventually right?” Zari glanced up at the king. Dread filling her stomach when the king didn’t immediately agree. Anticipating her next move T’Challa squeezed her hand tighter to keep her from running. “She wants us to do a paternity test and I can only assume the council of elders is going to want one as well so-“
Zari pushed down the embarrassment and anger that flooded her system, “No T’Challa. Because if you did not want this, you would find a way around it. So do you want the paternity test too?”
The king gulped then nodded, “I do,” his heart shattered as he watched Zari come apart on the inside through her eyes. She snatched her hand back and took a few steps away, “So all of this time. This past month, you did not trust me? You didn’t believe Aiden was yours?”
“Zar-“
“No! Because I did not ask you to come. I did not ask you to fly to America, come get us, and ‘save us’. I did not ask you to play savior! You did that! You found the letters! You found the picture! You saw it and “just knew” T’Challa. You stood in my townhome and told me that you saw the Photo of Aiden and you knew he was your son! For fucks sake even your mother saw the photo and knew. Now a month later you wanna come out and ask for a paternity test? Now that Aiden has gotten attached to you?!”
“Are you saying that he is not my son Zari!”
“That is all you took from-“ the woman threw her hands up and walked away. “Un-fucking-believable,” she muttered as she stomped up the stairs onto the palace patio. “Zari wait, is he or is not my son,” the king grabbed her arm and turned her around. Tears were streaming down her face by this point and she furiously wiped them off, “He is your son T’Challa. I was with no one before you and no one since. Don’t fucking touch me your majesty,” Zari pushed his hands off of her arms and the king nodded. “Then if you have nothing to hide Zari, why are you so against this test?”
“I am not against the test T’Challa! I am offended that you do not trust me!”
“I do trust yo-“
“No you don’t T’Challa. If you did you would not have had the audacity to ask me for this test when you were there the night he was conceived. The condom broke and we were both terrified. You told me you would be there for anything! Now you’re sitting up here asking me for a test like I was with multiple men at 18! You know you were the only one! I was never like that! So excuse me if I’m hurt and offended that me man I love, the man I thought loved me, asked me for a fucking paternity test on a child that we both know is his!” Zari yelled as she walked back inside the palace.
“Lower your voice Zari,” the king grit as he followed her into the palace to their room. The couple stormed into their room and the mother went immediately to where her clothes had been hung up and folded into the closet. Her hands move furiously grabbing everything she can and stuffing it back into her suitcase. “Zari what are you doing? Look I’m sorry Zar. I shouldn’t have asked. It was uncalled for.”
“You’re damn right,” she muttered, zipping the haphazardly repacked suitcase. “But I’ll give you the stupid test, because the last thing I need is for you or anyone else questioning Aiden’s parentage down the line. But as far as I am concerned,” Zari slammed her bag down on the ground and grabbed her toiletries and purse in her arms, “this is over. We can co-parent your majesty, but I cannot, I will not, be with a man who chooses his 16 year old sister's wishes over mine. Especially when the evidence is right there in front of his face. She is a child! I am the one who put all of my trust on the line again with you, and it took you three weeks. Three weeks to break it T’Challa. And this time, it really was your fault.” Zari grabbed her bag and began wheeling it out of the room and down the hall, peeking in doors to find a guest bedroom.
“Zari wait! Please come back,” the king hurried after her.
“And since you believe so strongly that Aiden isn’t yours, stay away from my son until that positive test comes back!” She hissed in response.
“Look Zari, I am so sorry. I’ll sleep on the couch or the floor or something. You can have the bed. Just come back to the room.”
Zari found the first open room and walked in tossing her things on the bed, “I think we both need some space right now. Just leave me alone.” She turned to face the king who had tears rolling down his face. “Then I am sleeping in here on the floor,” he walked over to the closet and grabbed an extra set of sheets and began making a bed on the floor. “T’Challa,” Zari sighed. “Just sleep in your own bed.”
“No I lost you once, I’m not leaving your side again.” He grabbed the two spare pillows and made himself comfortable on the floor. “Fine,” Zari tossed up her hands, unpacked, and went into the bathroom to change for bed. “Goodnight,” she murmured as she passed the king on his makeshift bed. “Goodnight” he replied as she closed her eyes and emotional exhaustion led her off to sleep.

Take A Break
Ok Y’all, these are already out of order, so I’m just not going to follow the soundtrack order because I’m not going to do all the songs. Each song is most likely going to be set in a different AU, based on the song. But I’m not gonna ramble, this is my first fic on Tumblr. Let me know what you think and I’ll post another part soon! Thank you for the love and support before this was anything more than a passing idea during the show.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
My dearest,
Y/N, Tomorrow seems to come faster everyday. I trust you’ll understand my worry for the state of our home country in light of recent events. I constantly worry whether opening our borders was a good thing, though it has provided aid to many people all over the world that are our brothers and sisters. The elders continue to pester me about closing our borders again, they are fearful of conflict reaching our land. Conflict that will place Wakandans in harms way. Though I fear the same, I must admit that i believe, the good that will come out of this far outweighs the bad.
I do not know what lies ahead for Wakanda, but I must say, I equally dread and anticipate the future. My dearest, I do wish that you were here in Wakanda with us, Shuri misses you as do I. I could really use your thoughts on this matter.
With all my love,
T’Challa
T’Challa sighed and sat back in his office chair. He grabbed the letter and walked over to the window that looked out over Wakanda. The beautiful city glowed in the sunlight. He watched as a ship flew out into the distance, right into the heart of the sunset. Casting his office into a warm glow.
He sighed as Ayo entered the room, “Your majesty, Queen Nakia,” Ayo bowed before eyeing the letter in her King’s hand. Nakia walked in and smiled at her husband. She glided over to the window and placed a hand on his lower back. The King flinched away from her touch.
Ignoring the hurt that crossed her face T’Challa strode over to his wooden desk and began to seal Y/N’s letter.
“Writing to Y/N again my love?” Nakia asked as she stood behind his desk chair. The king simply nodded as he focused on sealing his letter to you. He jumped when Nakia reached for the letter.
“Let me see,” Nakia pouted when T’Challa pulled the letter out of her reach. “I do not understand why the two of you choose to communicate by letter, in a country as advanced as ours,” The Queen shook her head and laughed. She settled hersellf on top of T’Challa’s desk “would holograms not allow to express your sentiments better? The only reason you would need a letter is if you have something you need to hide,” the queen laughed brightly. She quickly cleared her throat when her husband did not laugh.
After a few moments of silence she spoke up, “Well take a break,” Nakia insisted as she pulled the papers out of T’Challa’s hands. The king pulled them from her grasp again.
“Ayo,” T’Challa called out the door to the warrior stationed in front of his door. “There’s a little surprise before supper... T’Challa,” Nakia called. The king looked up from addressing his letter to you. Nakia glared at her husband.
“I’m sorry my love,” the man apologized placing the pen on the table. “I’ll be there in just one moment, I promise. Have mother save my plate.” He suggested.
“Ayo!” The king grinned, he grabbed the fresh letter from his desk. He placed the envelope in the woman’s free hand. Please make sure this arrives to Ms. Y/L/N as soon as possible.”
Ayo crossed her arms before promptly taking the letter to the mail center. The king quickly began to review meeting notes again. “T’Challa, the surprise is before dinner not during. You’ve all but ignored me since I walked in.”
“I’m sorry you feel that way my love,” T’Challa offered from his chair. He continue to search the notes turning pages absentmindedly. “What do you think Y/N is doing right now?” He looked up from his notes excitedly glancing out the window again as another plane flew off into the distance. Nakia approached the man and pulled him from the room.
“T’Challa, your son is nine years old today. He has something he’s like to show you,” Nakia explained as she led her husband to the training room. “He’s been practicing all day. Please try to pay attention,” The young mother asked as they approached their son.
Okoye stood on the mat with the young prince. “My king,” she greeted the king before turning back to the prince.
“Ready whenever you are,” Okoye nodded at the young boy. “Baba, Baba look,” The little boy smiled before sparring with Okoye. Even though the Dora Milaje general went relatively easy on the boy, he impressively blocked every attack the general attempted.
After a few minutes Okoye bowed as did the little prince. “Ah, that’s MY SON!” T’Challa cheered as he patted the little boy on his back. “He will be a great warrior like his father!” T’Challa beamed.
“As long as he does not freeze, like his father,” Okoye snorted. Many in the room laughed as they assumed the cause of this hesitation was the queen, but Okoye shot the king a knowing look.
The setting sun followed the royal family as they walked down the long palace hall towards dinner. As they wandered pass pictures of past monarchs, T’Challa felt their disapproving stares as he strolled in step with Nakia.
I wonder what how they would’ve felt about Y/N strolling the halls. His mind flashed back to the ball that brought you into his life.
“Your majesty,” you bowed as the king approached you. “Please, Miss. There is no need,” T’Challa smiled as your chocolate eyes met his for the first time. Your beautiful curls were pulled into a simple updo. Gold dust scattered throughout you hair, remnants dusted your skin. You glowed like a goddess in the palace lights. T’Challa froze mid sentence as you laughed quietly.
Okoye bowed and dismissed herself as she chuckled lightly at her king. T’Challa regained his composure and accepted your outstretched hand. “King T’Challa,” his lips brushed your knuckles. “Y/N” you blush.
“T’Challa!” Nakia’s voice shatters the young King’s daydream. “Yes, my Queen,” he stops and faces the woman. “My love are you sure you’re alright? You’ve been out of it all morning.” Nakia’s hand gently cradled T’Challa’s face as she felt for a fever.
“I am fine Nakia,” The king groaned as he removed her hand from his face. “What were you saying,”The young king insisted as they stood in the long hallway. Nakia waved their children on into the dining room before she and her husband.
The two continued to stroll down the hall, instructing the chefs to serve dinner as they carried on. “I was saying I wondered if you could spare a few weeks and we could travel together somewhere, as a family. Your children are getting older, now is the time to make memories with your family T’Challa,” Nakia offered.
“Nakia, now is just not a good time. The elders continue to pester me, I need to create some adjustments to the laws involving outsider involvement to get them off of my back.”
“T’Challa please, just think about it. You can even work remotely. Just try, for me?” Nakia pleaded, searching his eyes. He stared into the second set of eyes that captured his interest all of those years ago.
“I will try to get away,” T’Challa sighed, escorting his wife to the dining room.

Warnings: angst
A/N: Y’all seem like y’all like it or whatever. So imma post another chapter or whatever. I’m going to be posting the next chapter of Take a Break tomorrow.
Tumblr media
Hello,” Aiden walked over to his father and stretched out his hand. T’Challa looked at Zari before looking back at his son. He reached out and took his hand.
“What’s your name?” Aiden asked the man. “I am T’Challa, What is your name?”
“I’m Aiden and that’s my mommy. I don’t have a daddy.” T’Challa’s smile shattered into a million pieces.
“Well Aiden, baby that’s what we need to talk about.” Zari leaned down and smoothed his lapel out of habit. “This is your father baby boy,” Zari clasped her son’s hand in her own. His little eyes widened as he looked back at T’Challa.
“If you are my dad why did you wait so long to show up?” He asked traces of sadness written throughout this voice. T’Challa moved closer to the edge of the couch. “I am sorry it took me this long to find you. But I did not know where you were for a long time. Your mother did not know how to reach me either.” T’Challa explained to the boy.
“If you’re my dad, does that mean you will bring me food on my birthday?” Aiden asked innocently. T’Challa glanced at Zari. She nodded to him over Aiden’s shoulder. “Yes,” T’Challa smiled nodding at the same time as Zari.
“Great, now Mommy can we eat?” The boy turned to face his mother. Zari laughed a full bellied laugh as her son walked towards the kitchen. “Aiden you just ate son.”
“That was ice cream and this is fish,” he grinned before vanishing into the kitchen. “I swear this boy will eat me out of house and home. He’s only six.” Zari laughed as she moved to pull all of the pictures out from their hiding spots. T’Challa followed her, catching glimpses of her and his son.
Zari turned and bumped into T’Challa. “I’m sorry your majesty, would you like to stay for dinner?” Zari blushed.
“Yes I would, only if you do not mind. And please Zari, I will always be just T’Challa to you.”
Zari’s cheeks flushed red before she she nodded and walked into the kitchen.
Aiden and T’Challa sat at the table speaking animatedly as Zari began frying fish. Once the macaroni sat finished on the counter Zari turned to her son, “strawberries or no strawberries today?” She grinned as Aiden pondered the question. “Strawberries!” He smiled at his mom.
“Good choice,” She replied as she grabbed the fresh strawberries to put on his salad. “Daddy, would you like some strawberries?” Aiden asked as he ran over to help his mom choose the strawberries.
A grin spread over T’Challa’s face as he stared open mouthed at Zari. “Yeah, Yeah I would love some,” Aiden beamed as he brought the salad to his dad.
After saying grace the family dug in. “This is delicious Zar, I don’t remember you being able to cook,” the king commented as he wiped his mouth. Zari’s face fell slightly. “You have to learn a lot when you’re alone,” she shot the king a small smile. T’Challa cleared his throat as Aiden piped up over the wooden table.
“Is daddy gonna walk me to Dion’s party Mama?” Zari quickly checked her watch. “Oh baby have you packed? I forgot about Dion’s sleep over.” Zari stood up and quickly rinsed her plate and washed it.
As she dried her hands Aiden responded. “Almost mommy I didn’t know which outfit to pack for tomorrow.” He explained as he ate his strawberries. “Aiden eat the salad too,” Zari gently reprimanded as T’Challa walked over to the sink. “I’ll help you pack for him,” T’Challa offered as he placed his plate on the drying rack.
“Aiden finish dinner. Daddy and I are going to get your stuff ok? I expect all those vegetables gone when I get back young man,” Zari lead T’Challa up the stairs. Aiden crossed his arms into an X before diving into the salad.
“You taught him the salute?” T’Challa inquired as they walked up the stairs. “Yeah, it’s the only piece of home I could give him, besides the stories. He knows not to teach it to anyone else and only does it to me.” Zar finished climbing the stairs.
When they walked into Aiden’s room, the young mother sighed as she stared at the empty suitcase. The only thing packed was a pair of socks, a tooth brush, and his favorite sneakers. “He calls this packed?” She mumbled as she walked over to his dresser to grab his pajamas.
“I’m afraid he gets that from his father,” T’Challa chuckled as he grabbed the pajamas from Zari. “I never was able to pack. One thing was always missing,” he chuckled folding the pajamas. “So you let our son spend the night over random peoples houses often?”
Zari sighed and tucked the socks into Aiden’s shoes. “Don’t start T’Challa. The Davises are a good family. The parents always talk a little before they leave the kids. You are welcome to join us if you would like.” Zari grabbed the pajamas from his hands and folded them correctly.
“I would like to, if you don’t mind.” He smiled as she threw the pajamas and another outfit into the bag. “I want two of the Dora to stay with him tonight,” T’Challa re-folded Aiden’s outfit correctly. “No.” Zari responded as she watched him zip the suitcase. His head shot up, “what do you mean no? He is my son.”
“Yes he is your son too T’Challa but I have been his mother alone for the past six years. You do not get to walk in here and start demanding things,” A beat.” I trust them. Besides this is a group of six year olds, women with big spears is not exactly the most comforting thing around. He doesn’t know he is royalty and neither do any of them ok? So no warriors guarding OUR son tonight. Trust me. Besides you forgot underwear,” Zari unzipped the suitcase and packed her son’s underwear and favorite nightlight and toys.
The afternoon found the unconventional family standing on the front porch of a brownstone as the sun set over the city. The large door opened and a little boy about Aiden’s height ran out to greet his friend. “Dion James Davis how many times have I told you not to open the door,” a a thirty year old woman appeared on the front porch. She stopped yelling and smiled as she noticed Zari and T’Challa. She engulfed Zari in a hug.
“How are you Layla?”Zari asked. “I’m good. James is in the Den with the other boys,” Layla nodded as she glanced at T’Challa.
“Look Dion I’ve got my own dad too!” Aiden exclaimed as his friend jumped with him “Cool! David brought a new dump truck come on,” Dion pulled on Aiden’s arm. Before they crossed the threshold Zari cleared her throat. “Aren’t you forgetting something Aiden?”
The little boy ran over and hugged his mom. He kissed her cheek before running over to T’Challa and hugging his leg as well. Bye mama, bye daddy!” T’Challa grinned as his son ran into the house.
“Please come in,” Layla gestured as Zari grabbed T’Challa’s hand and lead him into the living room. On the small couch sat a few other parents. “Hey Zari,” echoed around the room as the parents greeted Aiden’s mom.
“Hey everybody, this is Aiden’s father T’Challa,” Zari introduced T’Challa to the group. “Ah it’s so nice to meet you!” An older woman greeted from across the room. “We were wondering if we’d ever meet the illustrious mister right. This girl has refused everyman we tried to set her up with. No one could compare to Aiden’s father,” The older woman chuckled as Zari flushed a deep red.
“It was very nice to see you all again but we must really be going,” Zari declared feeling the intense need to flee the scene. T’Challa grinned as she pulled him from the room. “It was nice to meet you all,” he smiled as he was drug from the room by Zari.
“The illustrious Mr. Right?” T’Challa joked as they headed back to her home. “Moving on,” she laughed as she bumped his shoulder. “Why are you here?” She asked in all seriousness as they headed up the street.
“What do you mean I came to meet my son,” he stared at her bewildered. “Ok you’ve met him,so what happens now? Your father exiled us, are you trying to bring us home? Are you going to acknowledge him as your son?” She stopped and looked at T’Challa.
“Yes he is my flesh and blood. I will acknowledge him as my own. But I also came back for his mother.”
Zari looked away and sighed. “T’Challa please,” she started. “No hear me out,” he pleaded grabbing her hands, “you were ripped from me six years ago, you didn’t show up for the senior ball, no one knew where you were. It hurt enough knowing you were gone but you carried our child as well. I lost two people that night, I want to make this right.”
“T’Challa just because I have your son and you want to spend time with him, WE don’t have to get back together. I don’t need him to be legitimized, you being a part of his life is more than I ever thought we would get.” Zari turned and started walking again. He ran up and caught her hand.
“Zar look at me,” she didn’t move, “ Zar it is not about legitimizing our child. It is about me still being in love with his mother. As far as I’m concerned we never broke up. Look me in my eye and tell me you have no feelings for me what so ever and I’ll leave it alone. I’ll be a father to my son and will never make a move on you again.”
“We should get back before it gets dark,” Zari continued walking to the townhouse.
“Zar....” he pleaded.
“I don’t know T’Challa. I still love you but I think we should just focus on Aiden right now ok? How long are you in town?”
“As long as it takes,”he slipped his hand into hers.

Take a Break Pt. 6.1
Setting: AU where T’Challa loves Reader but he is married to Nakia. Both the women he loves try to convince him to take a break.
Warnings:Smut by @halfrican-heat
Tumblr media
A/N: Here’s Part 2! Looks like we doing another part. (6.2)
You return to him, standing in front of him. You feel your heart pound as he regards you with a cool and impassive stare. He rises from his seat and circles you slowly, his eyes never once leaving you.
"I've wanted you for so long, my love. /You/ and you alone. You are the one I long for. The one I crave, kitten. Do you understand?"
"Yes, T'Challa."
"What?"
"Yes, my king," You respond. "I understand."
"Then why is it you are questioning me," He says, pausing behind you. "Why are you questioning us? You are the one for me. You /are/ my true queen."
He presses against you, snaking his arm around your waist. He trails loving pecks along your neck, bunching his shirt up. He brings his other hand up to cup your chin and draw you into a searing kiss.
You turn in his arms as the kiss grows in passion. You taste the pent up emotions that have been saved for you all these years. As T'Challa gathers you up in his arms and sits on his throne you feel his hunger. It awakens your own passion and you find yourself yanking his pants down with wreckless abandon. He removes his shirt from you and you cast his boxers aside.
He slides his erection along your soaked entrance. Your body burns with desire.
"Ride me, my queen," He urges, gripping your hips tightly.
You sink down onto his member with a startled gasp. He fills you completely and in a way no one else has ever been able to. He fits you perfectly and you realize that he is it for you. T'Challa is /your/ king. He's all you want.
T'Challa sucks in a breath, letting his head fall back. You swirl your hips slowly, savoring the way he stretches you.
"Shit, my love," He grits out. "You take me so well."
"Only you," You promise. "I am yours. All yours."
T'Challa smirks, rolling his hips into you. You let out a choked breath.
"Tell me," He begins. "Has another man been able to fill you this way?"
You moan in response, moving your hips up and down his member. Your slow tempo slowly maddens T'Challa causing his grip on you to tighten. He snaps up sharply, drawing a shocked cry from you. He speeds up the pace, releasing years of pent up lust.
"Answer me," He grunts. "Has there been a man to fuck you the way that I do?"
You shake your head, trying in vain to match his thrusts. But you are helpless as you bounce on his dick.
"Fuck, T'Challa," You moan. "Fuck yes!"
"You like that, entle? You like the way I take you. Let me hear how much you love the way I fuck you," He growls.
Your moans bounce off the walls of the throne room. His name falls from your lips like a prayer as you hold on to him for dear life. Never loosing his pacing, T'Challa lies you on the floor before his throne and spreads your legs impossibly wide as he pounds into you. He arcs over you, watching your face contort with pleasure.
"T'Challa! Yes, T'Challa," You scream.
"Yes, my queen," He moans, tossing your leg over his shoulder. "Let them know who you belong to. Let the whole kingdom hear who you belong to."
Your nails rake the length of his back as he goes deeper inside of you. You arch your back, taking every inch T'Challa has to give you.
You wonder why the hell you didn't take him when you had the chance.
"You have no idea how much I love you," He pants. "I have wanted you in this way for so long, my queen."
"And I've wanted you the same," You manage. "I love you, my king."
"Show me how much you love me, sithandwa sam. Cum for your king."
You clench tightly around T'Challa as the relentless knot in your stomach grows tighter. Your mind flashes back to the lonely nights you spent dreaming of him. You think of all the times you compared your partner to the king you could never have. You looked up and saw pure love in the eyes of the man you longed for.
And that alone was enough to make you snap.
The arch in your back deepened as your orgasm tore through you. You lock T'Challa inside of you as you milk him for all he is worth.
"T'Challa!" You cry out in ecstasy. "Yes, my king. Yes. Thank you, my love. Thank you for making me yours. Yes, my king!"
T'Challa grins at your praises and thrusts into you. You bite your lip harshly and close your eyes as he begins to fuck you through your orgasm.
"We are not through yet, my queen. I've not yet left my mark. When I am through with you the world will know you are mine, entle. You will /never/ forget this moment."
As he resumes his fast pace, your body begins its own rise again. Your mind is in shambles and your body burns. A fever has come over you. So as you wrap your arms around T'Challa's neck, you allow him to consume you. You give him every piece of you that you can afford to give. You coax him to his climax.
"Please, my love. Show me what I do to you," You plead. "Make me your queen, T'Challa."
A sharp moan leaves T'Challa's throat. He flips the two of you so that he can watch you above him as he finishes. You close your eyes and the sudden change and surrender to T'Challa's wild and sloppy thrusts.
"Look at me, my love. Look at me as I claim you," He groans. He hisses as his core tightens. "Watch me while I make you my queen."
You struggle to keep your eyes open but do your best. Your own pleasure reaches another peak and you call out his name as the coil inside begins to snap.
"Look at me," He says sharply, smacking your ass. "Look me in my eyes as I fill you with my next heir."
Your eyes snap open at his words.
"T'Challa, what?! Wait!"
But your words fall to deaf ears.
He shoots his load inside of you and, despite your confusion and anger, another orgasm rushes through you.

Helpless
Thanks for the love guys! I hope you enjoy this one, I feel like it’s kind of rushed, but that may just be me. Based on the song from Hamilton by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Setting: AU where Nakia and reader are sisters and Reader falls helplessly in love with T’Challa. This is a different AU from the world that take a Break is set in, but we will be going back to that AU Soon.
Warnings: not proofread, and fluff
Tumblr media
A laugh escaped your lips as you watched your sister artfully dodge the advances of Prince N’Jadaka and make her way over to you. “Y/N, you cannot simply sit here all night my love. You must join in on the fun. As many eligible young men as there are in this room, someone has to catch your eye.” Your sister glanced around the room.
You looked up for a perspective candidate, only for your heart to leap into your throat, along with your stomach. Your eyes went wide and glazed over slightly as his eyes met yours. “Ahh, I see you’ve found someone,” Nakia smirked as she nudged you. “Go talk to him. I’m sure he doesn’t bite.”
“Are you serious! Nakia I can’t go talk to the king!” You scoffed. “And why not?” She questioned. “Well, because,” you stumbled over your words.
“Well fine, I’ll go talk to him,” Nakia rolled her shoulders back and walked away. “Nakia, wait!” you called, suddenly panicking as she tapped his arm lightly and they engaged in conversation. You sighed and walked out on to the balcony.
You lifted your drink to your lips as you heard Nakia call your name. “Yes?” You replied. When you turned, you were greeted by brown eyes that were not your sister’s. You openly gawked at the king before remembering your place.
“Your majesty,” You curtsied slightly bowing your head. “Y/N Y/L/N. A pleasure to meet you,” you blushed.
You looked back up to see him smiling and almost lost it. “Well, I’ll leave you two to it,”Nakia smiled as she walked back in to the party.
A week later you found yourself messaging the king daily. Between your rounds at the hospital and his life as a king, the messages were lengthy and sent hours apart. But nevertheless they arrived every time either of you got a moment free.
Your days and nights seemed to have grown better every time another message arrived. It had been a little over two years since you had begun dating the king. You relaxed watching a movie one night in your city apartment. The moon was the only light as Nakia sat on the other end of the couch, your kimoyo beads began to glow. You opened the message and a smile slipped onto your face. “What did lover boy say tonight?” Your sister joked as she leaned forward to read the message.
“You know, the usual,” you shrugged quickly writing a reply in your head and watching it type out on the screen. “Ah, the usual as in, ‘your presence lights up my life. You are the most beautiful thing I have ever laid eyes on. You would make a wonderful queen. I want to marry you!” Nakia imitated the King’s voice as she rambled on.
“Shut up!” You laughed throwing a pillow at her face before sending your message.
“That’s not ALL he says,” you blushed as you resumed the movie. “Wait, Nakia paused the movie, “he wants to marry you?” She squealed.
“No one said anything about marriage Nakia, at least anytime soon,” you mumbled. “Ah, so you admit it!” She laughed as blush creeped onto your cheeks. “He’s mentioned it, a couple of times in passing.” You finally relented.
“Oh, what did he say?” She inquired scooting closer on the couch. “Just asked how I felt about it. Would I ever want to be queen.”
“Oh when’s your next date?” Nakia asked. “Friday,” you answered. “Great!” she smiled mischievously starting up the movie again. “Oh no, no. What are you planning?” You sat up and paused the movie again.
Your sister scoffed, “Me? Nothing!” She threw both hands up. “I’m just saying, if you really loved me, you would share him once you get married.” She shrugged and skillfully dodged the pillow you threw.
You strolled hand in hand with T’Challa through the crowded city center. Children playing after school and running through the streets delighted both of you as you wandered around aimlessly in the streets.
“A penny for your thoughts?” T’Challa smiled as he pulled you close to him. You laughed quietly as he ran his hands up and down your back. “What is so funny?” He pouted.
“Nothing, I was just thinking how much I love being around you. That’s all,” you shrugged, resting your head on his chest. His heartbeat filled your senses as you sat there in silence. His chest vibrating caught you off guard and you pulled back, “I’m sorry what did you say?” You blushed.
He shook his head grinning, “I asked if you would want to spend the rest of your life with me?” He stared down into your face, searching your face for your reaction.
“Are you serious?” You breathed, your heart rate jumping up a few notches. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you Y/N Y/L/N.” T’Challa smiled.
“Don’t we have to go to the elders first. What if they don’t approve?” You frowned, realizing this wasn’t as simple as you hoped. “You let me worry about them. I want to marry you. Do you want to marry me?” The king rubbed his thumbs over the back of your interlaced hands.
“I do,”you breathed out.
The large hall seem to suffocate you as T’Challa held council with the elders. You stood outside the vibranium doors, thoughts flying a mile a minute through your head. Your stomach was twisted in knots as you awaited the elders verdict on you and T’Challa’s relationship.
It’s been two years right? They hadn’t done or said anything that meant they hated you. That didn’t mean they didn’t hate you though. You sighed and sat in the windowsill head buried between your hands.
You looked up as your sister’s voice invaded your thoughts. “I came as quickly as I could,” she panted as she stopped by your side. “What’s happening? Have they said anything?” Nakia coughed as she settled into the seat next to you.
“No, they’ve been in there for an hour now, what if they say no Nakia? I love him,” you grabbed your sister’s hand for reassurance.
“I know you do, which is why they aren’t going to say no ok? They are going to approve it and you’re going to marry the king.” She gently rubbed your back.
The doors groaning open startled both of you as a Dora stepped out of the throne room. “Ms. Y/L/N, they are ready for you.” She nodded and waited as you walked over to the door. Nakia kept her hand around yours as you ventured into the room.
You kept your eyes to the floor, taking several deep breaths before you heard T’Challa call you. “Y/N,” you looked up to find a smile covering his face.
Your heart soared as you fought back the tears in your eyes. Nakia nudged you forward and you ran to him.
He pulled you close and pressed multiple kisses to your head. After a few moments Queen Ramonda cleared her throat and smiled at her son. You both quickly stepped back to a respectable distance.
T’Challa settled on to one knee and pulled a ring out of his pocket. “I had this whole speech prepared, but kneeling right here before you, I’m losing my breath so I’m just gonna ask you before I die of anticipation.” A brief laugh floated around the room before everyone settled down again. “Y/N Y/L/N will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
The months flew by quickly as the whole country planned for you and T’Challa’s wedding. Months turned into weeks, and weeks into days. Before you knew it, it was the day of your wedding.
Nakia walked down the aisle with W’Kabi as the wedding began. You followed behind on your father’s arm. Your gown floated behind you as two little boys carried your train. The aisle was covered with green and white flowers to pay homage to your tribe.
The sun shone brightly down on both of you when you joined hands at the altar. “As many elders and spiritual leaders have seen over the years, Love has the power to change people. For better or for worse love changes. Marriage gives us the opportunity to be new men, new people. No longer two individuals but one body. So we gather here today to witness the spiritual creation of a new man,” the priest smiled at the couple. “Do you two promise to love and cherish each other in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, and for better or for worse forsaking all others? If you do please respond we do, for now everything is a decision made by you both.”
You smiled at T’Challa and nodded as he dabbed a tear from under your eye. “We do,” you both replied, smiling like little children. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride,” everyone cheered as T’Challa pressed his lips to yours.
