Meet our newest resident, Gaia, the black-footed cat! 🐾 At just 8 months old, she is small in size but large in her feisty personality.
Gaia comes to us on a breeding recommendation from the Black-Footed Cat Consortium. Her arrival marks an important step in the conservation of her species; with only 29 black-footed cats in the Consortium, successful breeding could significantly contribute to the program. Gaia’s introduction to Ryder, the male black-footed cat, is in the cards, but we’ll let these two feline friends get acquainted when Gaia reaches maturity.
Black-footed cats, the smallest species of wild cat in Africa, can be found in the arid eastern parts of Namibia, Central and Southern Botswana, and South Africa. Its name is derived from having black or dark brown soles or pads. Predominantly nocturnal, its status in the wild is often challenging due to its shyness and preference for nighttime activity.
As Gaia settles into her new home in the Small Animal Building, you might notice curtains or barriers around her space. We appreciate your help in keeping noise low while she gets acquainted.
Yeah, I know what it is!!! It’s tiny, fast, agile and it’s so cute!!! But it’s also a beast!!! Gifted with everything it needs for success and survival, considered the top among feline species as hunters. Omg why is it so cute?!!🥰
Many people asked what the face of the black-footed cat looked like (featured in my #Caturday post). But like most cats, when you want a good photo of their face, this is about all they give you. #AninalFact: Weighing an average of 3 to 4.5 pounds and only 9 to 10 inches high at the shoulder, the #BlackFootedCat is sometimes called the smallest of the African cats. One more #FunFact: Their common name comes from the under parts of the foot and foot pads being black. . . . . . #WildlifeConservation #TheMoreYouKnow #ConservationResearch #EndExtinction #SavingSpecies #SanDiegoZoo #SafariPark #cuteface #Zookeeper #wildcat #WildlifeEducation #animallovers #WildlifeAddict #Wildlife_vision #splendid_animals #wildlifefriend #ig_shotz_animals #ig_wildlife (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvITVJ7l7iX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=77pzkvjdvpip

Cute But Deadly! The Black-Footed Cat - Small But Deadly Here’s more about this ferocious little cat: “The black-footed cat (Felis nigripes), also called small-spotted cat, is the smallest African cat and endemic to the southwestern arid zone of Southern Africa. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2002, as the population is suspected to decline due to bushmeat poaching, persecution, traffic accidents and predation by domestic animals.” - Wikipedia ・・・ #WildCat #BlackFootedCat #AfricanCat #AfricanWildCat #DeadlyCat #SmallWildCats https://www.instagram.com/p/ByMVDrkABYw/?igshid=m84vyh8mqsfj
#myfavoritekiller - #blackfootedcat - #LittleSpooktember 😾😾😾 September has been a crazy good month, but unfortunately, this will be my last #Spooktember piece. Nevertheless, may I present the Black-Footed Cat. 😼😼😼 #FunFact - Because Black-Footed Cats live apart from water, they meet their liquid requirements through the body fluids of their prey, given them a reputation as a #vampirecat. 😺😺😺 Have a great weekend, y'all!
