Jean Dolores Schmidt’s basketball career started in 1933 with rules that allowed only forwards to shoot. By 2018, she was the star of the NCAA Tournament — bobblehead and all. ⠀ ⠀ Today, Loyola’s very own Sister Jean turns 100 years old. Known for her maroon and gold scarf, quick wit and pre-game prayers, the beloved nun has no intention of slowing down. ⠀ ⠀ “I never tried to think I was getting old,” she said while sitting in her wheelchair at a computer in her office on a July day. “I think that’s kind of debilitating.” ⠀ She celebrated Wednesday alongside students and Loyola President Jo Ann Rooney, with cake and songs from a campus a cappella group. The university plans to honor her by raising funds for a $100,000 athletic endowment.
