I've spent countless time digging through old race results and points standings of NASCAR in the 90s as a decade I have a particular fascination with, particularly in its lower ranks. As such, a driver I find myself thinking about more than is probably healthy is Dave Rezendes.
Dave spent years as an often undersponsored owner-driver in the then-Busch series in the late 80s and early 90s where despite rarely completing the entire season he found his way into the top 10 21 times and had a best finish in points of 16th twice in an era that had crazy depth of talent.
However, it was the invention of the Truck series that finally gave him the brief chance to flourish on the national stage, sharing the 7 truck with his boss Geoff Bodine for about half the season with 7 top 10s in 11 starts before getting the ride full-time the next year where he won races at a very diverse group of tracks including Miami, Nashville, and Sonoma, had 8 finishes inside the top 5, 13 top 10s and finished solidly in 6th in points. However, in 1997 the team lost its sponsorship and Dave lasted just two races before they had to go in a more monied direction and he had to sign onto a much more B-tier team fielded by Bill Elliott's former business partner Charles Hardy and later Tom Gloy's team, and still managed 7 top 10s on the year.
Sadly, that was it for the national level basically, he wouldn't make more than 7 starts in either Busch or Trucks for the rest of the 90s and was gone entirely from the 2000s. I think if there is any driver who got completely screwed over by the Wild West days of the early Truck series it was Dave Rezendes who deserved more opportunities to show his obvious talent.

How Oklahoma became marijuana boom
Tumblr media
Across Oklahoma, a steadfastly safe state with a background marked by attracting individuals to search for abundance from the land, another sort of yield is assuming control over old chicken coops, trailer stops and fields where cows used to eat.
Nearby to a Pentecostal church in the minuscule town of Keota, the smell of maryjane floats through the air at the G and C Dispensary. Strains with names like OG Kush and Maui Waui go for $3 a gram, about a fourth of the cost in different states.
Not too far off, an indoor-cultivating activity is arranged in a local location close to manufactured houses, one of around 40 in the town of only 500 occupants. "It could look odd, however this is where the activity is," said Logan Pederson, 32, who moved for the current year from Seattle to Oklahoma to deal with the little ranch for an organisation called Universe Development.
Oklahoma has a portion of the country's loosest maryjane guidelines. Provincial utilities say the huge nurseries springing up across the state are stressing water and electric framework past the limit.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
Tumblr media
In Oklahoma, almost 10% of occupants have a clinical pot card, and that has started a blast in marijuana cultivators across the state. As Seth Bodin of Gather Public Media reports, the interest for water and power to help that framework is stressing a few rustic utilities.
SETH BODINE, BYLINE: Since Oklahomans endorsed clinical maryjane in 2018 with the absolute loosest guidelines in the country, the quantity of authorised pot producers has detonated to more than 8,000 - like Adam Mill operator, the head cultivator of Iris Homesteads outside Stillwater. Inside an enormous metal structure with extreme focus lighting and around twelve fans, he's filling a major tank of water for the day's errands.
(Short clip OF WATER POURING)
BODINE: Mill operator is answerable for raising around 5,000 weed plants. He says while his electric bill can depend on $3,000 per month, his water bill is low since he's developing his plants under lights inside.
ADAM Mill operator: I'm watering individual plants, you know, half-gallon of water at a time. What's more, they're flooding a field. Also, the space between the columns and all the other things is retaining all that water.
BODINE: Sheldon Tatum is a rustic water locale director in Hughes Region, Southeast from Oklahoma City. He expresses one of the eight producers that as of late moved to his area utilised 223,000 gallons last month. Contrast that with a typical family of four that purposes around 10,000 gallons per month. Tatum stresses the flood in water request could make old lines break, raising upkeep costs that will prompt higher service bills for everybody.
SHELDON TATUM: We have water frameworks that were constructed, quite a while back being approached to perform to principles today that are right beyond its ability.
BODINE: For Tom Whitaker, a water region supervisor in Wynnewood, Okla., fulfilling the producers' need for water comes down to assets.
TOM WHITAKER: In view of the numbers that I'm seeing, I will run out of water.
BODINE: Whitaker says he's syphoned 40 million gallons of water from the underground spring this year. He expects that will twofold, which he says is hazardously near how much water the state's assets board has allotted. That is the reason he's restricting producers to 10,000 gallons per month, the maximum for a typical family nearby.
WHITAKER: Since, in such a case that I begin syphoning - overpumping, I begin ransacking from my neighbour here, and afterward he has no water. And afterward lovely soon, no one has water.
BODINE: However it's not simply water.
LOGAN Lovely: These producers are utilising as much power as a little city.
BODINE: That is Logan Lovely, the tasks chief at Lake Locale Electric Agreeable. He says in excess of 100 producers are taking advantage of his electric framework, and everyone uses sufficient power to drive 30 homes. On the off chance that this keeps up, Lovely says the electric centre should purchase new substations and even put in new electrical cables. That could cost a huge number of dollars, a cost borne by every individual from the centre. Assuming that the cannabis win transforms into a fail, that could be an issue.
Wonderful: A large number of these areas will either shut everything down or they will downsize fundamentally in the event that the market fades.
BODINE: John Hudak says that is an undeniable chance. He's a senior individual at the Brookings Establishment who concentrates on cannabis strategy.
JOHN HUDAK: There are very numerous cultivators. There are very numerous dispensaries in that state for the quantity of patients.
BODINE: In the meantime, nearby utility chiefs should settle on hard conclusions about how to dispense restricted assets to fulfil developing needs.
For NPR news, I'm Seth Bodine in Oklahoma City.
CHANG: Seth Bodine's story comes to us from Collect Open Media, a Midwest detailing cooperative zeroing in on food and horticulture.
Individuals outside the weed business may be amazed to discover that the most liberal clinical maryjane market in the nation isn't California any longer. Nor is it Colorado, Oregon or one more left-inclining blue state.
It's politically safe in Oklahoma.
The red state has pulled a U-turn on weed strategy starting around 2014, when the state's head legal officer - alongside his then-partner in Nebraska - recorded a government claim to topple adjoining Colorado's new sporting maryjane program.
However, the U.S. The High Court declined to hear the case.
Quick forward to June 2018, when Oklahoma electors adequately supported one of the loosest clinical maryjane programs in the country.
After two months, Oklahoma controllers started tolerating applications for MMJ permits to operate.

Are You Scared To Get Happy (issue #3) YEAR: 1986 CREATED BY: Matt Haynes and Mark Carnell LOCATION: Bristol and Sheffield SIZE: A4 WHAT'S INSIDE.... Are You Scared To Get Happy was a quintessential and influential mid-1980s indie rock and pop fanzine. Matt and Mark took the name from the lyrics of "Hip Hip" (the second single by Hurrah!) and even went to the trouble of copying the words that made up their zine's name from the label of the single's B side in order to reprint them on the front cover.... Matt later went on to co-found Sarah Records with Clare Wadd (who also published a zine called Kvatch), but he’d already formed a label called Sha La La with a few other fanzine writers for the purpose of releasing flexi discs. The first two of Sha La La's releases were included in the price of issue #3 of Are You Scared To Get Happy: the "Bring Back Throwaway Pop!" EP, featuring The Clouds and Mighty Mighty (which was also given away with Baby Honey and Simply Thrilled fanzines) and the "Who Needs The Bloody Cartel Anyway?" EP, featuring Talulah Gosh and Razorcuts (which was also given away with Trout Fishing In Leytonstone fanzine). Every Sha La La flexi disc had a catalogue number starting with "ba ba ba-ba ba", which was something else that Matt borrowed from the lyrics of "Hip Hip" by Hurrah!.... Just like his other zine The Sun Shines Here (which was named after the first single by Hurrah!), Are You Scared To Get Happy was a platform for Matt and Mark to rhapsodise about their favourite indie bands and records (not to mention the thrill of becoming a record company), and to share their opinions about life, the universe and everything (and music they didn't like) with a degree of eloquence that was rare in the wonderful world of fanzines. Many of the musicians they featured were too young to have experienced the punk rock explosion first hand, but were now creating a scene of their own with the same kind of amateurish enthusiasm and excitement as their forebears from just a few years before. In issue #3 the authors acknowledge the influence of the bands associated with Alan Horne's Postcard Records on the contemporary indie crop, and were happy to award the title of "coolest man in the world" to Julian Cope. His 1984 album "World Shut Your Mouth" is one of my favourites of all time (especially a track called "Kolly Kibber's Birthday") but Matt and Mark were more in love with the singles he had released since breaking up The Teardrop Explodes. They also rave about some recent releases on Alan McGee's Creation label, such as "Therese" by The Bodines ("diamond hard polished pop, light glitters and shimmers from every side of these jingly-jangly tunes") while expressing their Bill Hicks-like distaste for the music industry's marketing tactics and endless attempts to maximise revenue by making each new release available in multiple formats - an approach that independent labels like Creation were also starting to adopt. Not surprisingly, Hurrah! (and their lyrics) get regular mentions throughout the zine.... It's also no surprise that Matt and Mark were highly unimpressed by the NME's C86 cassette - a rather lame indie compilation that the NME put together and promoted with a lavish, week-long event at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London - and they make a point of aiming their anti-establishment chagrin directly at NME journalist and former punk fanzine writer Adrian Thrills, even though his zine 48 Thrills had helped to start the bandwagon of fanzine culture that they were fortunate enough to be able to jump on. Issue #3 of Are You Scared To Get Happy was the last one that Mark Carnell contributed to, but Matt managed to churn out three more during the next few months. Journal For Plague Lovers part 16
William’s Last Words
Gracie Fields, lovely lady, lovely lady. Was I wrong, do I figure, you’re wrong If you think that..That’s bloody horrible that is, our attitudes. All queer and quaint. One more time let me sing a song. What was it. Queer and quaint us, know who,..we figure it out but it’s clear and crazy isn’t it? Die now. Finish it of now do I want to finish this song, wait a minute..oooolaaaaaa they were gentle really, even them…it’ll be a long time, maybe never, till I forgive them tho’. The biggest cock up since the great war, ahhh I’ll leave you now, it takes you a long time to realise you’re a gentleman, laaaaa, my god I love you all, yr (voice rising) all a credit. I’ll be waiting, all my cares are for you. Dreams enfold you, they leave and die. Goodnight sweetheart till we leave tonight. Hold me in your arms. Goodnight all, you’re all my friends…remember my wedding day, should’ve heard ole Bill singing, we’ll have a good old ding dong tomorrow, you’re lovely all of you, goodnight godbless I’ll always remember you, hope you liked the concert. I’ll go nice and quiet, I’ll just say cherio, here I go on my way, till we meet again, wish me luck as you wave me goodbye. Yr the best friends I ever had, yes, no, no I’m not a clever chap, I made a balls up again, first, second, third time but not on your time I hope, you’re a part of the world….oo be quiet old Bill, no applause, sleeptight, isn’t it lovely when the dawn brings the dew and I’ll be
watching over you. It was lovely singing to you, I won’t forget you. What can I say. Goodnight, sleeptight. The long day is through. That’s it, I knew I’d balls it up. Concerts over. You haven’t done bad Billy boy. Once loved now forgotten. Goodnight. Goodnight. You’re the best. You’ve been so kind, so sweet, so gentle and if we meet again the whole world smiles with you. Life is precious, I’ll just say no star no star, I’ll never forget you and say no star Bodine, I’ll remember you all, you’ll all be apart. I’ll leave so don’t be surprised if I come back. Sleeptight, goodnight. I’m just gonna close my eyes, think ‘bout my family, shed a little tear. We’re a land of singers. I’ve never had more pleasure singing to you tonight than my whole life. Come home again please. Goodnight Godbless, may all your kids be happy. Be thankfull for yr women; I’ve travelled the world and there’s nothing so special, what a lovely way to surprise you. Goodnight all..I’ll sing one more song (sings slurred national anthem). Please don’t keep me any longer oooowhat can I do now. I’ll try my best, how does it go, like a drummer boy..booombooombooooom..I was a drummer boy you know. You wouldn’t deprive a man…I don’t know when I’ll remember the words, I thought it was all cut and dried. Leave me go Jesus. I love you. I love you, I even love the devil and all even though he did me harm….all day…I’m ..it’s…it’s a…I’m really tired I’d really love to go to sleep and wake up happy, you can die happy but I wonder if you wake up happy, I’m hopeless. If I sing a song I’m down a scale or up a scale. I’ve come a long way, really, even for a tone deaf singer, if you want to know.
References explanations:
Gracie Fields was an actress, singer, and comedian in the 30s and 40s. She was a stage actress first and then film, but never enjoyed the process of making a film. In 1939, Fields suffered a breakdown and went to Capri to recuperate. During WWII she travelled to France to entertain the troops in the midst of air-raids, performing on the backs of open lorries and in war-torn areas. She was the first artist to play behind enemy lines in Berlin.
The Great War is another word for WWI.

Welcome to the post literate world.
I messaged a mutual a few weeks back about the sad state of grammar today. He and I both grudgingly accepted the slide in our era from “I was graduated from college” to “I graduated from college”, yet held the line at “I graduated college”, a statement that resembles a brag by noted TV dolt, Jethro Bodine.
I first encountered the, shall we call it ‘confusion’ over complementary and complimentary in the menswear forums (fora?). I assumed it was spellcheck working its magic, but I was mistaken. Hey, it happens. Even to me.
My point? ‘Cause you know I have one, right? My point is if the cranberries are free, then please do me a favor and take them out. And if the cranberries are saying nice things about the crumbly and accented cheese that’s just fucking weird.
And while you are at it, we sensitive Pomo’s do not make fun of accents. That’s very Bill Dana on the Steve Allen show circa 1959. Or Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s- which I admit was fucking silly.
Today I’ve evolved way beyond that  stuff. I only listen to unfunny comedians. It’s more ironic. Or is it ironical?

just a note: if u dont want this info or my plague posts block the tag "plague obsession 2: electric boogaloo". hey besties so i can't remember who offered to let me infodump or which post they said it on so i'm just gonna do it here to try and organise my thoughts (this is a lie a little i just want to get these thoughts on paper/computer screen but hopefully it still helps) (also this'll be very informal). also if you're the person who asked me to infodump thank u so much for that i give u a kiss on the head. ok now lets get to it
so the thing that people forget about the plague is how much it affected everything and for how long. so the first big plague was the justinian plague in i think 541 ce and that was the first plague pandemic and there are still primary sources we have of it (pricopius of caesarea my beloved). also the amount of effects each plague pandemic has,,,,, among other things the justinian plague helped lead to the development of the culturally different societal groups that would eventually become the different nations of medieval europe.
it's the second plague pandemic that has the black death and the great plague of london and all and it literally lasted from the 14th century (officially beginning with the european black death in 1347 but i personally count it as starting in the 1330s because of the original outbreaks) to the late 18th/early 19th century. if you can't tell, i love old records and sources of things so in this case my black death source beloveds are giovanni boccaccio and guy de chauliac (honourable mentions to the byzantine emperor john vi and nicephorus gregoras). the plague continues to strike everywhere (esp london,, like everywhere else kinda had one massive return of it at some point but london had epidemics every couple decades or so from the late 16th century to kinda the later mid 17th century. there are ofc reasons for this with hygiene n stuff but sometimes u just look at records n go "holy shit"). source mentions for this later stuff are jean bodin (dude ur theories r nuts but i love ur book none of it is correct and its very clear you worked yourself into a tizzy theorising) and then "a collection of the yearly bills of mortality, from 1657 to 1758 inclusive."
so then we have the third pandemic that started in the mid 19th century and ended a good decade or so into the 20th century (though certain places had problems with plague until 1929/1930). it's actually thought that the plague strand from the early 20th century was different than the original third pandemic strand because the original was bubonic and oriented around rats and fleas and carried through trade while the other one was pneumonic and therefore spread person to person. the cool thing about the third pandemic is that this was when the real scientific work was done. research in the 1890s lead to the identification of the yersinia pestis bacteria, as well as the modes of transmission; these of course lead to treatment methods like antibiotics (and insectecides which. interesting method but ok. i need to research those more tbh) and eventual vaccines. n e way im glad the plague is not a major issue anymore but it is still fascinating af
