Right! The Vegan-dweeb-snob combo platter who hyped Oh Inverted World by The Shins. The few who could grow beards did so and became poets.

It’s Record Store Day! Go back and get ignored by record store employees who think they’re cooler than you, just like in the good old days.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s butler did it and more.
I feel like a lot of people don’t quite get what a butler is. The role tends to get rounded off to ‘male servant’ pretty regularly in some media, whereas actually butlers are typically not just servants but chief servants. The butler was generally in charge of either all male servants or just all servants, period, in the household of an aristocrat or other very wealthy person. This meant that butlers have often been fairly powerful and influential people, and sometimes even had a manservant or two of their own.
(Also, fun fact: Mary Roberts Rinehart, the early 20th century mystery writer who is widely credited with popularizing the whole ‘the butler did it’ trope was nearly murdered by one of her own servants, a chef whom she had passed over for promotion to butler. He came at her with a pistol, but it jammed, allowing her chauffeur time to wrestle it away and restrain him.)

My guitar teacher showed me Thurston’s tuning for Teenage Riot.
We played it together and I looked up and asked, Why?
“I think he liked fucking around” came the reply. You wanna learn Lee Ronaldo’s tuning now?

Apr. 28, 1941: The first electric animated sign, designed by American advertising executive Douglas Leigh, was placed on Broadway at 44th in New York City. The Camel cigarette ad puffed out five-foot-wide smoke rings of steam every four seconds. Over time, especially during wartime, the image was switched from soldiers to sailors to airmen. The sign remained on the Claridge Hotel until 1966, when the building was replaced. This photo is from the early 1950s.

I turned around three companies in my career. In my fifties I grew concerned that my “ bag of tricks” was getting to its sell by date, so I earned my MBA. My entire career progress was due to a singular focus, constant learning, and self improvement.
I was gifted with average smarts and above average drive. My education is from two middling state universities. Nobody was picking my pasty, unattractive self out of a line up. I worked a minimum of 70 hours weekly for decades and took exactly one vacation in my 45+ year career, got canned once but I made it.
My path is available to anyone, especially if you don’t mind working in less than glamorous industries.
The next move is yours.
"Years ago, I gave a talk to business students. One of them asked me a pointed question: 'What is the one thing that keeps us from rising to the level of CEO, a position we all aspire to?' My answer wasn’t what the students expected. Talented, highly motivated people fall off the career track, I said, because they fail to work continually on expanding and improving their managerial skills. It’s a lifelong pursuit."
You never "just arrive" but you do need to show up.

No Answer: or, Fam Slams Blue Law plan.
Tumblr media
I tried calling you yesterday.
Oh yeah. Sorry. Blue Laws.
Blue Laws? What is that?
I keep forgetting how much younger you are. Blue Laws banned certain Sunday activities like buying liquor and shopping.
What does that have to do with cell phones?
Well, nothing. But had they existed in the time of Blue Laws it would have been illegal to use them on Sunday.
Yeahhhh?
Yes. Anyway, maybe I should hire a Shabbos Goy.
I thought you were an Episcopalian?
I am.
Look, I gotta go. Leave your phone on, wouldya?

Mis Crawford? No, I don't want an autograph. M’am? I am afraid I am going to ask you to step out of line and come downtown with me.
Is that Graydon Carter behind the store detective?
And Elizabeth Taylor circa National Velvet as the cashier?
Who made this film, John Waters?

I would let folks know how much I dig Jeff Lynne’s production: the pointless massed acoustic guitars and Ofay click track percussion perfection that would suck the soul right out of a Sly Stone record.
Oh, and my favorite band of all time is the fucking Foo Fighters, because I like the idea of rock stars being banal, soulless dolts, ready to ‘come back to the house and meet the folks’ .
oops.
If the above doesn't summon the Gendarmerie it’s my fault.
