Sunngifu’s 20 Questions

01. Full name: Lady Sunngifu, Wulfric’s daughter, of the Royal House of Wulfing. (But please call her Giva!)

02. Best friend: There aren’t many young people her age for her to interact with, and Wulfstan (really, Godgifu and Hild, making Wulfstan think critically for three minutes) is rather strict with her, given the fact that she’s a potential dynastic liability. As she’s a royal bastard, she doesn’t really have much of a household, either. Her closest friend is Eoforhild, the steward’s daughter, but Eoforhild’s getting married to the priest’s son next year...

03. Sexuality: She’s mostly attracted to men. Not that she’s gotten any chances to act on said attraction.

04. Favorite color: Green. Since green is considered ‘unlucky,’ Sunngifu has a rather hard time getting clothes in her favorite color. She hates the color blue since everyone has been making her wear blue gowns and kirtles as soon as she was old enough to not need clothes that had to be bleached every day. (“It matches your eyes” is one of her least favorite phrases.)

05. Relationship status: Formerly betrothed to Eadmund Aelfgar’s son, but he’s a bit dead. He was a fairly status-appropriate match, too, being the younger son of an Earl. Before that, there was a betrothal to one of her father’s Welsh cousins that never panned out, due to some disagreements over her dowry. 11. Biggest fear: That she marries some horrid old man who doesn’t treat her with anything remotely resembling affection. And/or that she falls into a covered-over well and dies. She’s also afraid of water, since she was almost eaten by a pike when she was very little. (This is why she takes pleasure in eating fish--one less enemy!)

12. Biggest fantasy: That she marries some handsome warrior and moves away from her brother’s household and lives happily ever after with no involvement whatsoever in politics, with at least three children. And that he values her for being herself--not for being a king’s daughter and a king’s sister and a king’s aunt. Basically, stability and the medieval version of a picket fence and 2.5 kids and a dog!

13. Bad habits: She tends to retreat inside her head whenever things get stressful, which doesn’t help the common perception that she’s a bit daft. She’s also one of those people who picks at every loose thread she finds.

14. Biggest regret: She’s been too sheltered to have serious regrets, and knows it.

Best kept secrets: She’s an awful goody-two-shoes (it’s very hard to act out when everyone’s watching you for gossip!), but she once managed to steal three sweet cakes and two flagons of small beer from the kitchens by pretending various important persons had sent her on an errand. She got such a stomachache, but it was WORTH IT.

17. Worst romantic experience: Her dead fiance tried to kiss her before he left for the battle he died in; Eadmund was a horrible kisser (even by her lack of experience kissing, she knew he was bad) and it was very similar to having a dog lick you on the mouth when you’re not expecting it.

18. Biggest insecurity: Her freckles. Beauty standards being what they are, she thinks they’re almost as bad as her older brother’s acne. She’s also not exactly happy about her hair texture, since it’s neither straight nor wavy and tends to misbehave on stormy days.

19. Weapon of choice: She carries a fruit knife on her belt, but probably wouldn’t be able to do too much damage with it. She does have very pointy elbows and a kick like a mule! (And, in a modern AU, would have been the scourge of the field hockey team.)

20. Role Model: She really looks up to her sister Godgifu, because Godgifu practically raised her in the years before she went to the convent.

Post Mortem

We were tasked to create a releasable video game. We chose to do a Creature Catching game in the third person perspective. For this project our inspiration was the Pokemon games, but we wanted to make it new, fresh and exciting.. We were given X weeks to come up with an idea, create all assets and  code and fully texture the assets. The final idea for the project was a game called Deor Fon. The idea was for the player to complete a small introductory quest, then explore the world catching Deors. 

We were planning to have around six Deors for the player to catch, but we realized early on that this would be too many and that we should only have 3.

I think this impacted the gameplay as there was less to do. For the style of the game, we wanted to go with a semi-futuristic, European type setting. We found many great references from art found around the internet (which you can check out in our full GDD). We also had 2 more games that we pitched, which were: Rifts in Time - Rifts was a time travel game where the player would have to travel through major historical periods in time and stop enemy aliens from altering the timeline and the world we know today. Tyr - Tyr was a mix between Deor Fon and Rifts in Time.

After we initially pitched the game we were told to remove content to make it viable,

which worked well for us as we could spend more time on what needed it most.

I created many environment assets and textures for our game. All my assets were created in Maya and textured in Substance Painter with the materials being created in Substance Designer. Forcing myself to use the Substance suite during this project taught me a lot and im glad I did it, as I can now create higher quality, realistic textures and my texturing in Substance Painter has greatly improved.

I wanted to create a 3D world with a mostly realistic style to it. We chose this style as we thought it would be the best fit for the type of game and theme we wanted to go for. 

I think the environment assets that I created turned out well. The models I undertook right before the end turned out the best as I had taught myself a lot about modelling buildings and environmental objects by that point in the project. I’m proud of all that I have managed to teach myself during this assignment. My biggest mistake would be time management, as I spent too long on the buildings that I created trying to get them perfectly. Other than that I don’t believe I made many mistakes. Time management would have been my biggest issue.

I missed the opportunity to create even more assets to fill in the world and make it feel more alive because I spent so long trying to perfect what I was working on. I don’t think trying to perfect your work is a bad thing, however learning when to say enough is crucial.

During this project I got to experience working in a small team and working hard together on a big project. I think what we have achieved is good and the game visually looks stunning and appealing. During the playtesting phase we got a lot of great feedback. The main concern was having the mouse accessible via a right click to turn it off and on. Everyone wanted a way to go through dialogue or interact with the world without the mouse feature. I got a bunch of great feedback for the environment and what needed to be fixed. Everyone seemed happy with the style of the assets which was a great confidence boost for myself and my work.

Player feedback showed that the Deor capturing system didn’t work very well and the battling with deors didn’t feel natural. At the time the attack buttons were 1 and 2, however they were changed to mouse buttons after player feedback.

I enjoyed receiving all the constructive feedback that was given and enjoyed listening to what I could improve on and trying to implement those changes. It was a good learning experience for me to see what I was doing right and wrong.

We scheduled our project with HacknPlan which started out okay. After a while people stopped using it and just started doing everything by word of mouth which I think caused some issues. I think we would have better stuck to our schedules and achieved more if we were constantly checking and updating HacknPlan with our progress and work hours. I met most of my scheduled deadlines which I am happy about. There were a few times where I missed my milestone for the week and needed to put in even more extra hours to finish. Having these milestones ensured I got everything I needed to done and I am glad I had the milestone system in place for myself.

In the end I don’t think we had the game as far along as we wanted it but I still think we did a good job with an incredibly appealing visual design. This game would be a great project to take forward as I could see there being a ton of interest in a 3D monster capture video game.

Eldarion - Arwen and Aragorn’s son

I posted my piece about Legolas’ son, and now it’s Aragorn’s turn. 

Eldarion is not really mentioned all that much, to my knowledge, but I thought it’d be fun to doodle him and come up with some ideas for the half elfy boy himself!

Eldarion, known to his friends as Darion, is the Crown Prince of Gondor. Eldest child of Aragorn and Arwen, he has two younger sisters, and his best friend growing up is the daughter of one of the Citadel Guard. As I explained in the post about Legolas' fictional son, Deor, he visits Mirkwood first at the age of six, and strikes up a friendship with the elf boy. Returning years later as a young adult, he finds himself deeply attracted to the quiet, almost reclusive elf... 

And a composite doodle to show that Deor is a bit taller than Darion :)
