BEN STONE & SAANVI BAHL ( + CAL STONE & OLIVE STONE) | Manifest 4.01 • 4.05 • 4.07
I know that I haven’t always been there, but like you said, you never gave up— not on the passengers, not on me.
It’s okay.
And/or, Saanvi being a mom/parent to Cal and Olive for two years during the time jump when Ben couldn’t 👉🏻👈🏻

yesterday i said in a previous post i didn’t necessarily dislike the finale and that’s still somehow true, but after having slept on all of this i want to add:
the finale only works if you don't ask yourself any questions
let's imagine ben wants to share the whole thing with grace - the poor woman wouldn't believe a word. she (rightfully!) struggled to understand callings in season one, and only accepted what they were when she saw they were affecting cal as well. now cal has no memories. even if grace believes ben - is she going to understand him?
when watching season one i was sure the show was going to break ben and grace up. their conflict was SO REAL, so raw. grace couldn't fully comprehend what ben had gone through, and he couldn't accept she had moved on from him with danny during those 5 and a half years. i never fully believed them reconciling, although i had no particular problems with them doing so
now let's pretend for a moment ben tells grace everything and she believes him. would he tell her as well he slept with saanvi? something tells me no, and starting over your marriage with a lie doesn't look like a great beginning
also - it's not like saanvi is going to disappear from ben's life. she is going to cure cal, the stones are likely to see her every day. would grace (and alex, i guess) not pick up on the fact that ben and saanvi know each other, trust each other, have a very strong bond?
something tells me ben and grace's marriage wouldn't actually last. which doesn't mean they don't love each other, but they are just different people

i'm not even going to comment on saanvi and alex's relationship, since the only thing we know about them is that alex bailed on saanvi because she didn't want to leave her husband. once again, not a great start

(also, just for the lolz: imagine saanvi being pregnant in the reset after the hook up with ben a couple of days prior)

Manifest finale spoilers. I'm about to rant.
What the f-ck was that ending?
It might as well have all been a dream. Other than Mick meeting Zeke, a few people disappearing, and Saanvi's cancer treatment coming out soon enough to treat Cal, nothing is different than if the show had never happened.
I'd have preferred the characters find happiness in their shitty world. Or heck, even all of them dying in their shitty world to sacrifice themselves for people they love (that would have required a different setup from the beginning of s4 so that we saw the people that the passengers loved).
This ending reminds me of the dilemma in scifi where a character has to chose to live in a happy fake world or a tough & gritty real world. The show writers chose the happy fake. I'd have preferred to see the real world.
I was optimistic for this season and really had hope this show was going to be better than previous shows about explaining the mystery. Of all the theories of how it would go, resetting back to the plane not crashing was the most boring one & what I really hoped wouldn't happen. I guess it's a satisfying-ish ending if you had low expectations.
I just thought we'd actually get some answers, and was also disappointed by all but one of the character's endings. Since the show chose to ignore the mystery and focus on character stories, I'm going to address my issues with those.
TJ lost Olive, but immediately seems to forget her because another cute girl shows up.
Mick ends her relationship with Jared, because he wants kids and she doesn't, but how did that never come up for them in conversation before. Took my opinion of both of them down a bit. Then, 5 seconds after Jared got dumped by the woman he wanted to marry, he's already flirting with another woman. Took my opinion of Jarod about as low as it can get. Shame because I had actually liked him.
The Cal, Olive, and Grace we knew are all gone. Never going to even exist. They're basically fake versions of themselves now. Grace is reset back to season 1, which means she's the annoying version I wanted Ben to dump. Also, how is Ben going to explain that he had sex with someone on the plane? Season 1 Grace would not be open to the whole "hey, we went to another world or whatever" story. She didn't believe anything Ben said about it until she saw it affecting Cal. There's no way she believes his story if she hears it led to him sleeping with someone else. Unless Ben plans to lie to his wife, she's leaving him soon. If he does keep it a secret that he slept with Cal's doctor, that just means she'll leave a little later. Keeping that secret will destroy their relationship. It was a really terrible writing choice to have Ben and Saanvi hook up and then just go back to their previous partners like nothing changed. I think they're great together, but I'd have preferred nothing happen if that was how it ended.
The one thing I really wanted was for Saanvi to realize that she deserves better than the person who kept rejecting her over and over, but nope. Zero growth. I felt so bad for her and feel like from what we know of Alex, she'll go right back to her family soon. Or maybe Saanvi will get enough self esteem to get angry at how Alex treated her (both by not taking the flight and by how she repeatedly rejected her in the real world).
Vance is back to being kind of a jerk who knows none of them. I suppose I'm glad he has his family back, but his character development was meaningless. I'd rather have seem him get his family back in the real world.
The only ending that didn't suck was Mick found Zeke based on what he told her in the real world. I personally wasn't attached to Mick with either guy, so I wasn't expecting her ending to be the most satisfying. At least one story we watched ended up having meaning.
After so many shows have ended disappointingly, I just really wanted one to stick the landing. (pun not intended, but I'm keeping it) This ending was a major (pun also not intended, but I'm also keeping it) bummer.
I don't know how go wrap this up, so I'm just going to drop this. In five years or less, Ben and Grace are definitely split. So are Saanvi and Alex. Hey, maybe Benvi will get back together then. Lol.

It's the fact that anytime they are on a mission they decide to kiss (and are comfortable with it) just like- the kissing is unnecessary so it obviously means something

Ok, the way I see it, the Ben and Saanvi ending makes sense separately.
It makes sense that they get a do over with the women they love without the overwhelming loom of the death date hanging over their heads. Ben gets to be with his family without any lost time. That's what he has always wanted. Same for Saanvi. She always wanted Alex to finally choose her. That makes sense.
But the problem now is they both happened to each other unexpectedly. Saanvi happened to Ben and Ben happened to Saanvi.
I still think that the bonfire conversation made absolutely no sense for these characters at that point. However, if you think about it, these two basically declare their love for each other. "My family has always been important to me, and then you happened." Excuse me, that's a love confession.
Tumblr media
In all the chaos, falling for Saanvi was unexpected. He couldn't get over Grace because he couldn't get over the picture of the family he had built with Grace in it. Saanvi disrupted that picture. That bonfire scene felt more of an emotional breakup between two people that love each other but are afraid to jump in. Two people that want to be together but feel like they shouldn't be together.
And so while they still get their do over, it wouldn't be the do over they had imagined.

What if we ruin it all, and we love like fools?
And all we have we lose?
And I don't want you to go but I want you so
So tell me what

see, here's the problem: i didn't necessarily dislike the ending
it makes sense that everything was building up to the passengers coming back to the beginning
BUT THEN
why give us a season of ben and saanvi if the original plan was ben going back to grace and saanvi going back to alex?
at this point i would have preferred ben and saanvi being JUST friends the whole series and nothing else, as much as i loved their scenes this season
the writers can't keep their foot in both shoes and satisfy all audiences. they wanted ben and grace? great, then STICK TO THAT
(the same goes for jared and michaela vs zeke and michaela
i for one i am SO GLAD michaela chose zeke in the end but i still had to suffer through AN ENTIRE SEASON of her being back with jared for no reason)

i like to imagine that after Cal recieves treatment and is all healed and after Eden is born, Ben realizes that he has strong feelings for Saanvi, and later in life they can pursue a relationship, Grace meets Danny and is also happy with him,
Olive could cross paths with Tj in college or after college,
i need some kind of epilogue with this fantasy!
let me live my happily ever after to everyone!!!
including Mick and Zeke still madly in love 10 years later
