2023 Fic Writer Year In Review (Part 1)

These came from this ask post here, but I felt like answering them in chunks on my own, similar to what I did in 2022. I was a lot happier this year. :D

Answers 1-10 under the cut!

What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?

Messing with formatting and POV in "An Act of Husbandry" (Virche Evermore, Scien/Ceres)! I think it turned out great, thanks to the Despair Ending that inspired it having a lot to work with. I definitely want to try it again!

2. How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!)

...I have no idea, actually. ^^; A lot? Let's go with that, yeah.

3. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?

Being honest with what I want to write makes the act of writing go so much easier. Also a lot of things I thought I'd never consider writing I absolutely would if given the right characters.

4. What piece of media inspired you the most?

A lot of media, not even ones that I wrote fic for! Cupid Parasite wound up being a huge inspiration just for how it handled the different "love types" in each route so effectively. Baldur's Gate 3 has helped me put into context how I want to write Legato in Ligature. Virche Evermore has made me adore visual novels as a medium more than ever. Anne Rice's books once again reminded me of why I write in the first place...I could go on. XD

5. What fandom(s) did you write for this year?

Alphabetically: Berserk, Death Note, Granblue Fantasy, Trigun ('98 and Stampede), Touken Ranbu, What in Hell is Bad?, and Virche Evermore.

6. What ship(s) captured your heart?

This was the year of Legato x A Good Chunk of Trigun's Cast, with special mention going to Legato x Vash, Legato x Meryl and Legato x Knives x Vash. Allan x Lynette from Cupid Parasite also occupied my thoughts a lot, but I didn't feel the need to write fic for them. ^^; Also, coming in at the end of the year: is that Scien x Ceres from Virtue Evermore with a steel chair?! Yes it is, and I've never been happier to be bludgeoned.

7. What character(s) captured your heart?

Legato waited 10+ years before setting up shop in my heart and I still don't know what happened. Later, Scien kicked down the door and Ceres apologized before also stepping in too.

...Also, I feel it's worth mentioning, but good lord was this ever Belial's year as well, even more so than the last five. Confound this man and his ability to make anything sexy as long as he's involved!!

8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year?

With the exception of Berserk, GBF and Touken Ranbu, they were all new this year! (And even GBF had new faces, like Lodi.) In general I let myself run wild.

9. What fic meant the most to you to write?

...Hmm. It says something that there are so many contenders this year, doesn't it? Every time I think I have an answer, two more options appear. In general, there were points where I really felt characters' emotions as I wrote, and I hope readers felt the same.

10. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?

Again, a really hard question! XD But I do have an easy answer for that: Baby Princess Training Diary (GBF, Belial x Lyria and Belial x Lyria x Djeeta, rated E). It's a combo of being happy that I finally knew what I wanted out of it, and also just...I love Lyria so much and wanted her to have the best possible time, "even" in a kinky, dubcon story like this one. For whatever reason, she brings out Belial's most Dangerously-Caring Boyfriend Energy, and there are moments in this where I had to look away because they were so cute together! And adding Djeeta into the mix made it all the sweeter. It just wouldn't stop, even when it was time to edit. The fic itself isn't going to be to everyone's tastes, and I knew that, but still. It was just so fun...

all in the senses, eustace x female!reader

first meeting. embarrassing yourself in front of a hot erune man wasn't on your bucket list, and yet here you are anyway.

Your journey started with Gran holding out his hand to you and offering you to come with him Vyrn and some blue haired girl you never met before on a journey. Specifically a journey that his father had once taken.

You and Gran have been childhood friends ever since you could remember, and such an opportunity to leave your home was something you couldn't pass up.

Granted as you took his hand and Lyria's (the blue haired girl you literally just met) with Vyrn flying next to you three, you had to admit that there were some parts of the journey that you had wished you stayed home for.

Belial was pain, the soldiers were a nightmare, Gran being a "singularity" was just plain weird and confusing, and don't even get you started on why the sky is blue.

Though, you didn't mind it all at the end of each day.

You met new people and gained new friends, and before you knew it, the Grandcypher had its very own crew in no time.

And what's an adventure without a little romance? Yeah, you know where I'm going with this. You, the girl from an island that barely anyone knows exists, obtained a little crush on a stoic erune. A.K.A Eustace.

The first time you saw him, you were a blushing mess.

You found that anytime that Gran tried to introduce you two, you would become a stuttering mess without fail whilst gaining a shy personality and demeanor.

Did you just kick some soldier ass with some awesome sword skills a few minutes ago? Yes, you did, but the moment that Eustace shows up, that confident attitude disappears out of thin air.

But being shy isn't so embarrassing, right?

Wrong.

The moment that you finally gained the courage to introduce yourself, you tripped over thin air and basically tumbled right out from the side of the Grandcypher. Luckily, however, Eustace was quick on his feet and caught your hand.

You made Eustace promise to never speak of this again.

And as you would quickly scurry back to your hidey hole of a room, you would miss the small smile gracing the lips of a usually stoic erune.

loving how belial's battled pretty much everyone on stage by now, the only ones i'm not sure are the eternals? but he probably did and i forgor

Actually the first person he really battled on stage was Seofon!

i still remember that Kazuya's introduction as Belial happened during the pandemic so instead of doing a regular cosplay show, it was 90% an actual movie with the cosplayers acting as their characters (and dubbed over by their respective seiyuu) about how they're organizing the fest despite the circumstances.

Only to learn that GASP. Belial has infiltrated the premise and has been causing chaos on their organization, and WORSE OF ALL: he stole Lyria's bento!!! the criminal!!!!

so all the cosplayers basically tried to find him the whole show until the 10% on a stage in an empty room that led eventually to Percival and Seofon being the two to take on Belial, and if i recall Seofon was the one who took him down.

There was a lot of memes at the time also about how during the curtain call, Seofon looked always ready to just grab Belial and drag him away if he misbehaved. There was a spur of Belial x Seofon fanarts out of it.

I'd love to see the Eternals TEAM UP on beating Belial up though (i think Feower and Seox should be allowed to beat him up fully), but at least he fought Seofon once?

Did he fight the Society though, i'm running blank on that

anyway i think Belial should fight everyone, as a treat.

Hello! Just came here to say I really love your writing and request a sequel to the Belial x Pregnancy S/O where she gives birth to the child (whether it be a boy or a girl, maybe twins??)

A/n: hhhhhhh I’m love??? Thank you so much!!! Hhhhhh this one is a lot more emotional and has uhhhh some angst???

Belial is really calm during the delivery. You’re screaming at him that you’ll absolutely murder him because he’s making you go through this, and he is smiling back and patting your head and doing his best to help. 

And he was overjoyed to see his precious little twins! One was a boy, the other a girl, and he was just having a heart attack at seeing their tiny bodies all swaddled up. 

While you’re asleep and his children are by your bedside, he can’t help but just look at you guys and smile. This is...this is an entirely new feeling for him. He held back for so long, thinking that he shouldn’t have been able to get happiness, and here he was, a family, his very own family. 

The kids are his absolute pride and joy. He’s basically a soccer mom in black jeans and purple feathers. He insists he must help his children with fashion because his KIDS CANNOT AND WILL NOT WALK AROUND LOOKING LIKE SOME BASIC SKYDWELLER. NU-UH CHIRREN, FLAUNT YOUR STUFF BECAUSE YOU ARE AMAZING. 

Matching sunglasses for all of the family? More likely than you think. 

Once his children start getting older and developing more personality, he tends to notice where they got them from. 

For instance, his son is definitely you. A lot more calm and nice, a precious little bean who seems to always be smiling. 

His daughter is definitely him. She’s a little diva, always loud and energetic. And he gets so proud when she threatens to beat people up for making fun of her brother. 

While he loves both his children, his daughter is someone he relates to a lot more, so he knows all her little tricks. 

“Ah, ah, ah, what did Mommy say about no dessert before dinner?” 

“B-but! How’d you even find out? I cleaned up the mess!” 

“Listen little munchkin, you can’t out smart me of all people.” 

Let the mind games begin. 

Belial lets her try his scythe and she instantly loves it. Your son however prefers a good ol’ harp. 

Raising a family sure as hell ain’t easy, so sometimes he sends off the kids to Aunt Lyria or Uncle Sandalphon. 

Belial’s got the biggest shit eating grin as he hands them over, because the two love the children and you, but they despise Belial with every fiber of their being (even after you’ve gotten married and everything). 

Your daughter loves to screw with Sandalphon, and he has night terrors of when she switched out his sugar with salt, or replaced his coffee with soy sauce. 

Just so you know, she’d never do that with Auntie Lyria because she gives her sweets!!!!

Your son is very polite and loves to learn more about the two, and Sandalphon likes having him over to just feel...not alone. 

Belial never really thinks of how this could all go wrong now. He’s finally obtained happiness and love, and this high feels like it’ll never end. 

until the day his son comes home crying about how when he was pushing a friend on a swing, they flew off and nearly broke their wrist. 

His sister came home a week later and explained that the reason she had bloody knuckles was because she punched a kid who was trying to bully another classmate, and they landed on a desk and doubled over in pain (she was quite proud of it, and internally, so was Belial, but because you were nearby he scolded her lightly). 

He never told his kids about their heritage, and had assumed that maybe they just didn’t get any significant powers because they seemed so...normal. When these things keep piling up, he can’t keep ignoring them or brushing them off as coincidences, so he immediately goes to you and rants about how awful he feels. 

The reality of their situation only settles in more when his kids start to notice that they look a lot younger than most despite growing up. His son is the first to bring up how Belial looks the same as he did when you and him got married, yet you seem to have gotten older. 

He of course laughed it off and said he had good genes. 

Oh god, and his kids had them too. 

He really did not know what this would mean for them. Would they be immortal? Or would they just live longer than most? What kind of powers would they have. 

And the thought that plagues him the most- would they end up like how he was? 

His anxiety hits a breaking point when his kids talk about how they had to do a project about the day the sky was about to fall. They didn’t believe it happened, but you two try to give a cleaner version of went down, so as to avoid the other parts about how their father was...a demon on some parts. 

They picked up you two were hiding something, so they went to Sandalphon. He also would not reveal what happened, albeit he looked a lot more guilty and annoyed they asked, so they knew something bad happened. 

The next went to Lyria. Your son remembered she kept a journal during her travels with you, and he asked for it, saying it was for a school project. Lyria, who was none the wiser to their schemes, handed it over and told them to have fun with it. 

The following things they read made their heads spin. Lyria wrote a lot about that day. 

“Sandalphon...he’s a primarch? And so is dad?” 

“Look what she wrote for dad...’basically the worst’...” 

“Brother...what’s going on?” 

When they return home, your daughter immediately goes on the offensive and demands to know why you guys hid what they truly were. 

“All this time! You lied to us! Here I was thinking something was really wrong with me- and it turns out you were just a bad guy!” 

Her brother tries to calm her down but she gets even angrier and screams insults at Belial. 

Belial feels anxious because he knew this day would come. The happiness he had worked so hard to obtain would come crumbling. Because of him. 

In a desperate attempt to ease her anger and fear, Belial tries to step forward and place his hands on her shoulders, but she slaps them away and calls him a monster. 

“Don’t touch me! You damn demon! You’re a monster! You’re a liar!” 

“Don’t say that to him, sis! Breathe for a moment, please!” 

Your daughter is incredibly affected by the news of what she is and who her father once was. She always loved Belial, and thought highly of him because he was similar to her, they could play pranks with each other and still be happy, because they were just two tricksters having fun. 

But her stark sense of justice was an even bigger driving force in her life. The fact her father was someone evil made her insides churn. What if she became as bad as him one day? 

Your son on the other hand, is a lot more calm and level-headed about the situation and understands how hard it must’ve been. He tries to sort out his feelings with you, since he always felt more comfortable with you, and asks what made you fall in love with Belial. After you tell your son about all your emotions, he goes and apologizes to Belial. He easily trusts him again, but does warn him that if he dare try to do anything remotely bad, he won’t hesitate to hurt him. 

Belial nearly cries out of relief and pride. His son was finally becoming a man. 

“I’ll hold it you, kid. I promise your old man won’t do anything bad.” 

Fixing his relationship with his daughter took a lot of time. She wouldn’t even look at him and would coldly brush him off. 

This was perhaps one of the most painful moments in his life, right up there at the time when you nearly killed him and Lucilius was murdered. 

Eventually, she broke down and clung to him, apologizing profusely over how she treated him. She admitted her fears about becoming a bad person, and he wipes her tears and lets her know that she will never become a demon. 

“You’re my little angel, you could never upset me, nor will you ever be a bad person.” 

After the entire fiasco settles and Belial explains more of the situation to them, he instantly embraces you. 

“Thank you...” He whispers as he hugs you tightly. 

“For what? I’ve done nothing.” 

“You stayed with me. You loved me even after those awful things I’ve done. Sometimes...sometimes I get scared of what will happen to us one day. What if I hurt you, or the kids?” 

“Belial. Look at me, love. I know you. You’d never hurt us. I trust you with my life, even if the world turns its back on you. You have us. You have our love and support.” 

It’s all he needs to hear before he breaks down and sobs into your arms. 

Belial is actually pretty lax about his kids dating. 

His daughter is pretty outgoing so she usually talks about her crush or will quickly tell him as she’s walking out of the house she’s going on a date. She’s been going steady with her boyfriend for three years now and she’s going on about getting married. 

“Not until you graduate and I’m dead, young lady.”

“BUT YOURE IMMMOOOORRTTAAALLLLLL!!” 

His son is pretty reserved and he literally begs him to go out. 

“STOP STUDYING AND JUST LIKE GET A GIRLFRIEND OR SOMETHING!!!!” 

When his son admits he has a crush on his classmate Belial is screaming and congratulating him. 

Belial really tries to spend as much time with his family as possible. You’re unfortunately growing older, and so are the kids. As they’ve grown more proficient with their weapons and fighting, you decide to go back on the Grandcypher and adventure again. 

Some of your crew mates have passed, while others have grown into adulthood splendidly, and it brings you joy to reunite with them. 

Belial is surprisingly a good father. A lot of people were doubtful he’d ever change his ways and become a worthy man in society, but to him, he doesn’t care. He has you and his two kids. There’s practically nothing else he needs in the world except you three. 

Sometimes Belial likes to just stare at you when you’re sleeping and just reminisce. He really wants to know what he did to become lucky enough to get married to you and start a family. 

He sighs in contentment and pulls you closer to him, finally letting his tired body rest. There’s plenty of places to explore tomorrow, and he wants to celebrate and experience all of them with his family.

His entire character development across WMTSB. An angry, vengeful, spiteful primordial being who after failing to exact his revenge and destroy the world that created him despite being even less than a spare that was easily thrown away, learned to love it, cherish it, and be a part of it and of the lives within it.

3) Favorite line

This is gonna be a combination of two lines since they highlight Sandalphon’s change between WMTSB II and 000. One of his skill lines before his 5* uncap is “Don’t underestimate the power of a Primarch.” This is Sandalphon boasting about his newfound power but it’s also indicative of the attitude he carries in regard to it. It’s the line of a proud deity who is taking his job seriously but only treats it as a job, as a passing purpose since Sandalphon plans to foil Lucilius and Beelzebub’s plans and then perish to join Lucifer in the afterlife. It’s devoid of the conviction of a protector and instead filled with the burden of a survivor. 

After his 5* uncap, possible only after 000 has been completed and Lucifer’s White Wing added to the player’s inventory, the line becomes “This is the power of a Primarch. Use it well.”  Sandalphon is no longer intimidating his opponent, he is telling you that this is his power, and he’s trusting you with it like Lucifer entrusted Sandalphon with it. This is Sandalphon telling the player he stands beside them and will lend them his strength to protect the sky. Sandalphon is a character surrounded by promises so this is his promise to you and it is also your promise to him, that you will use his abilities for the good of the skies.

Sandalphon is actually fond of small animals and keeps a few stuffed toys in his room gifted to him by the children among the crew.

8) Unpopular opinion

Well, I don’t know how unpopular this is but it is An Opinion™: Sandalphon likely is not bi, there is a stronger possibility he is a gay man. Shipping him with a female MC rubs me the wrong way though I will not object to anyone who does so and hc’s him as bi since sexualities in Granblue tend to be rather vague. As much as I would like to project my own sexuality onto him I think that “gay” rather than “bi” fits him best.

Try to argue he’s straight and I’ll set your clothes on fire.

9) Song I associate with them

Apart from his own theme song performed by his own voice actor? ARIA by Kalafina is appropriate. Also doubles as a mythology gag since Kenichi Suzumura voices Mikiya Kokutou in Kara no Kyoukai, the series where this song originates.

I'm gonna hate myself but there are times when Lucio keeps to himself and avoids Sandy because he knows he sees his Lucifer in him, and there are times when he stays by his side and comforts him as he grieves.

You'd think that using Belial x Djeeta or Belial x Lyria as a yumejoshi/self-insert method would be easy and obvious, but not necessarily for me. ^^;

Underneath it all, Djeeta and Lyria are lonely women bearing these huge, extraordinary burdens beyond mortal understanding, and I feel like they need to have someone who can sweep them off their feet like they're ordinary girls. Belial has similar problems but more experience with coping badly, so with his mature but playful allure he's an easy pick. (There are lots of fluffy alternative bachelors aboard the Grandcypher, and I do pair the girls up too! I just love some "corruption" in my pairings.)

This train of thought brought to you by this year's birthday message (days later), and how much it emphasized how Lyria and Djeeta are the only ones who understand what they're going through. The way Djeeta's narration wistfully describes Lyria as "like an ordinary girl" and how she wishes they could both just exist without the world possibly ending because of their deaths was...a lot. ;v; Still happy! But sobering too.

The sequel to Belial's Perverted Princess Training Diary is finally here! \0/ As with that fic in 2021, this was my submission for Iddy Iddy Bang Bang 2023. As Lyria wears frilly dresses all the time in promo art, I had to get more creative this time re: how Belial would train her. It's remarkably fluffy, considering Belial's dastardly intentions. It takes Lyria a moment to realize she’s swaying along with his words. Thank goodness he didn’t see that. Stay still, stay still!

“But I’ve heard tell,” Belial continues, still looking through the dresses, “that some people call you a ‘baby’. In their eyes, you’re just too much an ingenue to think of as a carnal being.” He looks down at her, and yet again she’s reminded of how tall he is. It’s striking when he’s earnest like this. “Pardon the pun, but I think they’re selling you short.”

Thinking again about how Belial's first method of getting Lucifer's feather from Lyria was to sweet-talk her*. Thinking even harder about how Lyria was totally charmed by him...

I assume this was supposed to be some sort of "we need to make the players jealous" plan? It didn't work on me, though! I just filed this scene plus all of Belial's flirting with Djeeta away under "to be considered again once I've blocked people". XD (And then the writers tried this again in Dearest Friend, at which point my gloves came off and have never been put back on again...)

*Noteworthy too that he uses a totally different tone of voice during this scene? It's warm and sweet, like honey for Lyria's ears. I miss it often... ;v;

BeliDjeetaLyria Sugar Mommies AU, but it's Belial claiming free food and other luxuries will domesticate him and Djeeta over-excitedly drowning him in them because "Oh my gosh, this just might work!". Meanwhile, Lyria's trying to help cover expenses and ensure there's nothing too nefarious going on. (And then she gets distracted by how flustered Belial gets over simple gestures of affection.)

If Belial's summer ver. ever got a fate episode somehow, how would you want it to go down? (ships included)

Thank you, anon! I would apologize for being long-winded but you did ask for specifics, so. (I'm going to be using Djeeta for this instead of the neutral "Danchou" because I'm obviously biased, but feel free to imagine Gran instead.)

Well, first of all, I'd definitely like Lyria to be the one who instigates the whole thing. Maybe she (after shyly looking around to make sure nobody's looking) summons him in his usual form, and after he does his whole "Do whatever you want with me~" line she pipes up "Um, want to go to the beach?"

Belial has to think about this for a second. As a projection of himself, can he go to the beach? He looks down at Lyria, who's looking all dewy-eyed and earnest, and decides sure, why not. But they should bring the Singularity along too. "It wouldn't do to leave her out, right?"

They go swimsuit shopping--Belial pretends it's for the girls and not him at first just to see Lyria's pouting face--and Djeeta and Lyria get to help him accessorize. Maybe he projects to clothes onto himself somehow? It's not important. XD The important thing is everyone has fun!

After that...well, going by some of his lines/how he looks in his summon art, lots of swimming and exploring quieter parts of Auguste Isles ensues. Maybe people keep trying to pick Belial up and Djeeta and Lyria are surprised he refuses them all? "My dance card is full today, thanks. Maybe next time."

A possible romantic bit of dialogue + options:

Belial: I told you this was a date, didn't I? Why shouldn't I act like it?

(Say nothing.)

It's embarrassing...

I hope we can do this again.

Options 1-2 would have Belial teasing Djeeta and Lyria, while 3 would be Belial in his "stunned into moe silence over being loved" mode before getting flirty again. :3

And in-between that, Belial tells stories about what Auguste used to look like a thousand years ago. (Flashback with him and Lucifer inventing surfing? Lucilius doing oceanic research? Beelzebub VS Belial volleyball match?)

One of the many fun things about writing Djeeta: you have a rare opportunity to pick and choose certain aspects of her character and leave the rest.

Like the way she's cool and calm on the outside but anxious about her role as Singularity (like main GBF)? Excellent, that's still in-character.

Like her rambunctious and slightly ditzy (as in the anime and VS)? Also viable, enjoy!

And someone like Lyria and Belial, who're much more consistent, will have very different reactions to each interpretation. Whatever version of her you fell in love with (or simply like), they can too. (And in Belial's case there's the bonus, very interesting "I love the power-hungry beast inside you", which I really should use more often.)

And if, like me, you're a sucker for moeblobs and want to give Djeeta a *little* bit of that syrupy-sweet flavor...well, people know where the back button is. ^^;

Well now I'm curious about how Djeeta and Lyria fit into Cammy's AU...

HMM good question, anon...Cammy doesn't "swing that way", so despite Belial's best efforts I don't think she'd be down for "all four of us, together~". XD; Then again, I don't think she'd mind if the relationship was open: Belial enjoying "his girls" when on the Grancypher, and when he takes time off he sticks with her.

For their parts, Lyria and Djeeta would probably be very supportive of "Ms. Camomile"! Lyria in particular can enjoy the romance. Vyrn would be super suspicious of what "that pervy angel" gets out of it, but even he can't really complain if Belial's not causing a cataclysm or worse.

(In a darker AU where Belial betrays Camomile or uses her as a pawn, the girls would 100% have her back, though! And he'd get a kick out of them defeating him again. XD)

Belial does an ASMR cooking show with Djeeta and Lyria in the studio because someone has to eat all the delicious treats he's crafting

Also he strikes me as someone who loves feeding his beloved, just doting all around. He'll take care of everything, just be a good girl and open your mouth ~ but not too wide before daddy gets ideas

YES I agree! He seems like he really does enjoy doting on/teaching his lovers various things and finding out what they like. He enjoys variety, though, and wouldn’t mind at all if his lovers preferred doing the doting~.

I've been doing the last edits on my Iddy Iddy Bang Bang submission and. Wow. Lyria's gentle ravishment courtesy of Belial and Djeeta (and Lucifer, somewhat?) is actually going to be finished after a year...even getting writer's block was worth it in the end.

Cause of near-death number 1: Belial using sugary pet names on Lyria so much that I had to tag it

Cause of near-death number 2: Belial/Djeeta/Lyria in this fic in general. (But especially the shopping scene! Which I can mention because I tagged for shopping, haha) Lyria is getting the Girlfriend-Boyfriend Experience (tm) whether she admits she wants it or not...
