My take on their Beforan counterparts (and an excuse to draw them as stinky old men but shhh)
These two use their shared adoration of Feferi, and their distaste of the others craft to fuel their kismesissitude
It's magic vs. technology babey (and maybe a little bit of telekinesis but shhhhhh)

cannot stop thinking about the fact that the main trolls had both a sylph (healing focused class) and a life player (can heal mortal injuries and literally raise the dead), but neither of them focused on their classpect powers At All in the alpha timeline so the party member who did the most actual medicine was equius the sweaty horse guy. he did lifesaving surgery on two separate occasions. on patients who were actively bleeding out. the first was just in his hive with pretty much no notice the second was just on the floor of the meteor. he integrated robotics with their nervous systems and other than some balance issues from the guy whod been paraplegic for months prior to getting his legs cut off with a chainsaw it worked great. the prosthetics held up for the rest of their natural lives. hes 13. after he died they had to start sourcing all their medical care from ghosts

Im sure you've been asked this before, but what are your thoughts on Cronus?
Remember that time Karkat, who was 14-15 at best, wouldn’t let Cronus hit on him so Cronus followed him home and tried to unlock his door/break in to keep at it and called Karkat selfish for locking the door in the first place?
Remember that time Cronus told Mituna that he’s broken and there’s no way anyone could actually ever genuinely love him and that Latula was just lying to him out of pity?
Remember that time Cronus sexually harassed/assaulted Eridan, who was like 14 and related to him, in a public space- by which I mean in the middle of a literal crowd- to force him into going out with him?
Remember that time he told Mituna that “if culling meant what it should have on Beforus,” he would have killed Mituna himself as a literal hate crime?
Remember that time Meenah called Cronus out for being outright cruel Mituna and Cronus called his own behavior abuse while also saying that Meenah was worse than he was because of actions an alternate version of her committed in an entirely different timeline?
Remember the fact that he feels so entitled to people’s attention and affections that he sees anyone rejecting him as a punishable moral crime and thinks anyone who rejects him is “objectively the worst”?
Remember the fact that he knows he’s a terrible person and an abuser and is given ample opportunities and room to change and grow and actively chooses not to?
Because I sure fucking do.

yknow what actually? here you go. heres the beforan ancestor sketches i have waiting for my burst of motivation (theres also an eridan one but its not fully done so ill keep it from the public for now)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also if anyone asks, im mostly going by what features of both descendants and dancestors are *not* featured in ancestors, which coincidentally sometimes is whole designs (nepeta sharing little visual motif with the disciple and therefore straight up just "adult-ifying" her for my design, vriska looking very similar to mindfang - resulting in my idea of beforus vriska being similar looking to aranea)

Brain is paralyzed with ideas.
So yeah. I got back into Homestuck. And an issue that was a minor fixation when I was first into it has come back full force (especially now that I'm better at art/writing/worldbuilding).
Beforus. What the fuck is going on there.
Why does this question rattle along in my brain? Because like. For example, we have three Vantases: Karkat, Kankri, and the Signless (Alternian Kankri). But there's a fourth, unexplored character there. Beforan Karkat. I have always found that strange. Where is my son.
Sooooo, I was unable to get to the part of the comic pertaining to Pre-Scratch my first run around, so I might have to... actually read the comic in full. Oh god. But what I've seen of the Beforus trolls? Most of them aren't really to be taken seriously because their personalities are based on tumbles discourse. They're parodies, which is a shame. I think the idea of a world that coddles the lower rungs into submission instead of culling its population is intriguing.
My MAIN fixation? What are the Alternian Trolls fuckin DOING in Beforus??? We know that Feferi is the ruler, and that is why Beforus is structured the way it is, but what is going on with the others?
It's especially hard to decide with the characters who idolize their ancestors and thus their personalities/fashion reflect them (Terezi, Vriska, Eridan, etc.). They are incredibly influenced by the culture on Alternia to behave the way they do, and with Beforus having a different culture, would they be completely different?? More akin to their Beforan descendants???
None of this makes sense.
Like, we have Dualscar (Alternian Cronus), who I am enamoured with, but what's Beforan Eridan doing???
I'm revealing my shame here, I just wanna know how hot my favourite gets. But to puzzle out his new personality and design, I would have to take into account the rest of the trolls. That is a lot of work. wahhhh whahwahhhhh and I can't draw or write or worldbuild!! Ignore my earlier claim that I've gotten better at it, that was LIESSS.
...hey what's going on with the limebloods on Beforus, were they still completely wiped out??

Both Kankri and Porrim are correct about gender roles in Alternian and Beforan society, but not on the way they probably think.
Easiest to address, let’s start with Porrim: she is indeed correct when she claims that women are oppressed in a way in Alternian and Beforan society. For example: Karkat calling the stuff Tavros likes “games for girls” on a derogatory way, Kankri being misogynistic to women, Doc Scratch being the real one in control of Alternia (him having an influence over HIC) etc.
Those are things that we actively see happen in Homestuck’s canon, they’re undeniable. We can’t turn a blind eye and pretend this isn’t a thing that happened. It literally is, just read the comic.
Meanwhile, Kankri is also right in that it doesn’t make sense for things to be like this. Alternian and Beforan society have no reason to have evolved in this way, considering male and female trolls serve the same purpose socially. So much so that, in canon, we don’t know what the difference between male and female trolls. Sure, female trolls have boobs but it’s never stated that trolls are mammals, while it was shown to us that they are born and grow up like insects, to the extent most people in fandom compare them to bees (they call their houses “hives”, there are drones that serve a reproductive role in their society, the Mothergrub functions similarly to a Queen bee, etc).
There was a point in fandom where people were theorizing that female trolls were actually biologically stronger than male trolls, specifically because Karkat calls LARP a “game for girls”, and we all know how deadly that game is. Also the fact that jadebloods are mostly females and are sent to take care of the caverns, which in practice means “your duty is killing unfit grubs”. Pretty brutal and nothing like human maternality (if you can even call what jadebloods do maternal)
So what’s the real issue? Why is their society like this? Well, I can’t say I know the truth, but I have an idea and it’s pretty simple:
Hussie did not plan troll society from the beginning and/or doesn’t know how to handle gender on a society where gender doesn’t play a big role.
By all means, troll society has no reason to be gendered the way it is. Female and male trolls serve the same purpose, only varying due to their blood, not their gender, and we don’t know anything about their history or worldbuilding to make a fair assumption that isn’t straight up made up.
It’s not really a perspective issue, but a writing issue. Hussie probably didn’t plan troll society all that much besides what little we see, and they sure as hell didn’t plan from the beginning to make 12 more trolls that were caricatures of tumblr users.
There’s multiple moments where characters are misogynistic for no reason and a few hundred pages later we learn that trolls care so little about gender that they don’t even have a concept of gay relationships, despite there not being gender prejudice in that regard. Meanwhile, at the same time, we have Feferi assuming Eridan was interested in a girl first and then later she suggested a boy and showed much more shock and intrigue on that possibility. It just doesn’t track!
For people who didn’t get the reasoning when people point out that Alternian and Beforan society have gender issues because of the way their biology works, now you have an explanation: poorly throughout worldbuilding, for which I can’t really fault Hussie for considering how insignificant it is on the long run.
So, how would a better gendered alien society with no gender influence look like worldbuilding wise? Well, I can’t really tell you a definitive answer since everyone is free to make their own version of it with a variety of possibilities. There isn’t a right or wrong to this question.
Now, if you would ask me how I’d write it, I’d tell you: I’d write it like Invader Zim’s Irken society.
On Irk, male and female irkens serve the same purpose regardless of gender. They all reproduce asexually (through means of the machine fuckery we see in flashbacks), serve the same roles, and societal positions are determined by another factor: height. Sound familiar?
It’s possible to explore gender oppression in a society like this regardless if the writer wants to, but it’s not a must. There’s plenty of space to write whatever variety of worldbuilding you want, and I think that’s pretty great!
Gender issues is a thing in Alternian and Beforan society as we see in canon, that’s undeniable, but now you know why it’s so weird that it’s a thing in a society where gender shouldn’t matter: poorly though-out worldbuilding.

I’m trying to introduce new things into how I digest Alternia little by little especially post-slurquest which I found very helpful. Is Alternia the internet of the early 2000s? The social goal there was often (still is arguably) to not introduce any consciousness of gender or race which was disruptive and treated accordingly. (There are no girls on the internet/tits or stfu/etc.) Following these rules required a certain amount of roleplay. Is it too simple to say Sburb/Sgrub is just the statement “society is an rpg...” or is it perhaps TOO ELEGANT???
I’m writing backwards. The whole purpose of this line of thought was to explore how Beforus followed Alternia. If so; on Alternia everyone is expected to roleplay whiteness, but on Beforus/in act 6, more explicit racial stereotypes and metaphors start to emerge. (”Blue blood’s burden” + Aranea and her necklace, Meenah and Condesce’s aave, Kurloz’s Dr Facilier inspirations, more use of 'Chucklevoodoo', Rufioh stealing Dante Basco’s typing style, Damara’s uh, everything! And Kankri to top it all off with the concern that the new internet is just too darn preoccupied with this stuff, and don't you realize you're making me-- i mean everybody else-- feel self-conscious?) On Alternia we have things like Mindfang in a Spanish conquistador outfit, but it’s kind of noteworthy that there aren’t really Beforan Ancestors (or roleplaying games!) to speak of in the same way, so her antics feel almost wistful. I believe Karkat when he says the beta and alpha trolls are “almost genetically identical,” and it’s only the setting that changes.
This lead to mulling on "inversion" and how you can't invert a flat plane or a grey image. It's only areas of high contrast that get flipped. So what's familiar stays familiar and what's strange gets stranger still. Back in the old-school internet you avoided spectacle with roleplay-- working for Karkat, I guess.
I'm STILL writing backwards. Is it going too deep to unpack Terezi's "your name sounds kind of like game" as a call to Gamzee to engage in roleplay-- "you are the game itself?" That makes the reply of "you should ask Karkat, he likes games" very funny for both reasons. Their whole thing might just be them duking it out over Karkat's assimilation (and affection.)
It also means Equius and Terezi are having the same conversation in what they're asking Gamzee to roleplay. That would make Eridan's "STOP BELIEVING IN MAGIC" the third-time charm. I think Magic has obviously been a cypher for homosexuality & gender nonconformity in homestuck but Gamzee's magic is slime/miracles and then named/revealed to be voodoo after their heel-turn.
Between the jubilant cheers, outbursts of song, and dispersed chatter of nonsense one makes when speaking in tongues, Herbert concluded every one of these children must be on drugs.
He began noticing a common thread among the kids, aside from the shared trait of exhibiting clinically psychotic episodes. Most of them were armed with books. Children’s books. Tales of marvelous imagination and adventure, and above all, magic... That kid over there was wearing a billowing rainbow-patterned hat. It would almost look Rastafarian, if it weren’t so flagrantly homosexual. - Page 1 of Wizardy Herbert... for no reason at all.
I'm finally at the Sea-Goat because I wanted a clear explanation for why Caliborn shoots off gamzee's fake wings. Really obviously the sea-goat as the threat of something existing mid-way through metamorphosis or something transforming makes them transphobia bullets. But it’s specifically Caliborn who takes Karkat’s verbal condemnation and makes it a reality. It could be the narrative going “you had your chance!” (See visual aid.)
The whole montage where Gamzee's crush on Tavros was revealed --> Doc Scratch speaks with them reminds me of this, a bisexual character's exchange with a predatory wizard from the same book;
“Ah.” Thundleshick produced a stern look behind the tangled, fibrous crisis on his face. It was the demeanor of one charged with forming a grave diagnosis. “You know, my elder brother struggled with this very challenge. Attraction to flesh of one’s kind, it’s a troubling demon.”
“I was jus hoping you might have, like, a magical cure for it. Jus make it go away.”
The old magician stroked his beard, as one might do to ameliorate a high-strung shaggy dog. “I will see what I can do.”
//
“Yes, yes. Now point yourself at that door. Like this.” He modified his posture for him by the shoulders. “Now, boy, fill your mind with manly thoughts. Visions of burly clout. A roaring motorcycle. Professional wrestlers clutching each other’s muscles for dominance. A friendly lady fitted with a swimsuit. Oh, yes, yes.”
“Um, ok.”
“Now, through the door with you!”
Russet drew a breath. His feet felt welded to the floor. He knew the strength was in him to run. It was in his faith. His faith to let go and trust God, to set everything right. Soon it would be over.
He ran as fast as he could toward the chalk door. There was the sound of bone against brick. Russet bounced backwards and dropped to the floor unconscious.
The fat old Campmaster stooped over the boy and proceeded to pick his pockets.
There’s more I could say about this but it also speaks for itself.
Those posts abt The Tombs of Atuan also come to mind;
But I didn’t and still don’t like making a cult of women’s knowledge, preening ourselves on knowing things men don’t know, women’s deep irrational wisdom, women’s instinctive knowledge of Nature, and so on. All that all too often merely reinforces the masculinist idea of women as primitive and inferior – women’s knowledge as elementary, primitive, always down below at the dark roots, while men get to cultivate and own the flowers and crops that come up into the light. But why should women keep talking baby talk while men get to grow up? Why should women feel blindly while men get to think? -Ursula K Le Guin, from What Women Know
Is HS mad at Gamzee for the “voodoo” -- preening herself on the things Sburb doesn't know? Refusing to play the game as “talking baby talk?” After trying to make the post for hours all I've been able to get is putting a few quotes next to each other, so I guess take this as it is.

The three main Eridans you're going to see on this blog:
Eri Ampora. He's my character. He lives on Earth C, has Waardenburg's syndrome which causes a patch of hair to grow in white (he dyes it voilet), and his eyes never filled in. He wears violet colored contacts instead of glasses. He's a reincarnation (literally) of a post-game god tier Eridan that lived in the dream bubbles with Solbee. In his current life, he lost part of his arm and got his face scarred, due to a greenhouse collapsing on top of him. He does not remember his past life, although he's aware it exists. He has many children, because we have no control.
Theo Ampora. Belonging to @phantasyprince, he's a bloodswap maroon Eridan who also has Waardenburg's like Eri, although his is severe enough to cause profound deafness. He dyes his white patch maroon sometimes, or leaves it white. He's matesprit to my character Red, and they are NOT from the same bloodswap timeline. His eyes are silver and flecked with maroon spots, and he has long curly hair with decorative beads and feathers on a braid for protection reasons. Due to a permanent magic anon, he's an angel to foil Red being a demon.
Ailean Ampora. Belongs to @phantasyprince as well. A large boy, this one's name was Never actually Eridan, he's the Beforan ancestor of Cronus. He's FtM transgender, which is why sometimes he's portrayed with breasts. He's got scars on his face from a trident and lots and lots of freckles. He's Red's moirail, which was a complete accident but sometimes muses do what they want and now they're inseparable. He runs a spooky library by himself and he's rich beyond all reason.

((also because meta essaying about troll genders and language is fun:
consider: troll languages being highly inflected, with grammatical markers to indicate things like different degrees of formality, the speaker's pronouns/gender, the audience's pronouns/gender, the relative gap in status between speaker and audience, and other things that English largely does not do.
(waxing so damn long-winded beyond the cut)
first: I am operating from a base headcanon of "trolls do not have any real distinguishing physical sexual characteristics between male and female. nook + bulge for everyone, baby. effectively 'male' and 'female' may not even exist in the ways that humans think about them, for trolls, but troll *gender* is a system heavily codified in expected societal roles and behavior. moreover, a bunch of human teens as first time observers were completely unprepared in the field of xenosociology, and probably made some really big mistaken assumptions about what troll genders mean, or are, or are signified by, and a bunch of troll teens probably didn't have the xenosociological chops to correct their misunderstandings.
second: troll gender is generally heavily influenced by the type of lusus. I originally had this headcanon of the biological sex of the lusus somehow affecting the hormone balance of the young troll, and playing a role in gender determination, but.... I don't like that so much now. it's not like the trolls would really have a concrete way to determine what biological sex random animals were, and with some animals, it's a struggle for trained professionals to figure that out without in-depth testing. so, new idea: it's not about the sex of the lusus, it's about the aggression level of the lusus. highly aggressive lusii tend to produce more aggressive trolls, and increased aggression, violence, and reactivity are definitely coded as feminine traits, for trolls. what if trolls, as they evolved from hive-structured social insectoids, operate on genders like 'soldier/guard' and 'worker', not 'male' and 'female'?
consider the canon trolls. Nepeta, Terezi, Vriska, and Feferi all have aggressive, dangerous *predators* as lusii. Aradia may be an exception, but we do not know much about the kangaram lusus, and it might be an aggressive type too--kangaroos can and do attack, and rams can be pretty damn aggressive. Kanaya is a special case: her societally imposed gender is not exactly 'girl', it's 'mothergrub-tender'. I'll come back to her later! out of the boys, Tavros, Equius, and Eridan have what *seem* to be calmer, quieter, less aggressive lusii, Gamzee's is absent and not really a formative influence on his behavior, and Sollux's is drugged into a stupor most of the time. Karkat's is distinctly excitable and aggressive in comparison, but he is off-spectrum, and falls outside the expected order of things, too. (does this mean Karkat is actually considered feminine by troll standards? it arguably could.)
third: coming back to the special case of Kanaya. I think it could be argued that 'jade' is a distinct gender, for trolls. there are specific roles for jadebloods, held by no one else, and the way they are treated and the standards they are held to are completely different from any other group or caste. on this note... jadebloods who reject their societal role? super GNC at the very least, and may consider themselves trans by troll standards. with Hussie's hamhanded handling of 'Beforan feminism', what if Porrim were advocating not for 'women's rights' but for 'jade rights', freedom for jadebloods to act outside the strictures of their very controlled gender-caste? it'd make a lot more sense under that lens, than somehow arguing simultaneously that the upper echelons and rulership of troll society are predominantly women, society idealizes and pressures trolls to conform to 'female' behaviors, and yet somehow troll women... are oppressed on the basis of being women? because the latter reads about as well as a meninist rant.
fourth: looping way back to language! consider a language in a heavily stratified, caste-based society, in which the statement "I am asking you to do X for me" carries a shit-ton of additional information, grammatically. a troll might use specific pronouns to indicate their gender (aggressor/soldier/fem or cooperator/worker/masc) as well as their caste position (low, mid, high, or even tyrian-supreme). they might do the same for the person they are speaking to. they might use honorific forms of verbs, or phrasing, depending on the caste gap.
a bronzeblood boy speaking to a purpleblood girl, might say "I (lowblood-masc) am asking (respectfully, low-to-high) you (highblood-fem) to do X (kindly, obligingly, as a favor) for me (lowblood-masc)".
the same purpleblood girl, addressing the bronzeblood boy, would say "I (highblood-fem) am asking (derogatorily, high-to-low) you (lowblood-masc) to do X (overtones of obligation, threat-of-death-if-noncompliant) for me (highblood-fem)".
fifth: now that I've gone through all of that, we know from some canon off-hand statements Sollux makes that he kind of doesn't get the big deal about hemocastes. so maybe he's colorblind? can't actually see those distinctions reliably? maybe instead/also, he spent so much time on the darkweb as a kiddo, talking with people who were hiding their caste/gender information and using very neutral language, that he automatically defaults to speaking the same way in face to face situations, and considers all those extra layers of grammatical structure as a tedious, pointless waste of time.
so Sollux, talking to anyone, is more like "I (anon-neutral) am asking (root-neutral) you (anon-neutral) to do X (root-neutral) for me (anon-neutral)", and probably a lot of more traditionally socialized trolls find that incredibly confusing/abrupt or even transgressive, because how are they supposed to categorize and refer to Sollux in their own speech, then??? new gender dropped, it's this fucking anonymous darkweb-nerd who talks like he's selling crypto.))

i think blaming Beforan society for the way Kankri acts is like the main reason we have this problem. people refuse to acknowledge a lot of Homestuck characters as parodies of real life types of people (Eridan is obviously the supreme example of this) so they don't want to wake up to the fact that Kankri is a shitty guy because he's supposed to be like real life shitty guys
