Well. They literally never do anything on screen other than break up and angst about how the relationship isn’t working out because they’re 16 years old and literally fucking suck at communicating. Why should I be compelled by a relationship when 99% of its existence is dedicated to the fact that it sucks for totally normal 16 year old reasons and also that it’s over? I’m 23, and literally have infinitely better romances to focus on.
All the Alpha Kids just totally suck ass at talking to each other. This is because they’re 16 and sheltered, sure, but there comes a point where it gets kinda grating and hard to watch… Because the “Sheltered 16 Year Old” aspect is written so well. The way all these kids are just absolutely falling over each other trying to date Jake, who is deeply, deeply not into it is kinda just uncomfortable to read, and since Jake’s arc gets cut off short before its resolution… There’s just no concrete payoff, really. Poor dude is still getting treated like that to this day.
I understand it was revolutionary for some people, seeing as how it was the first time they’d seen a “Love Triangle” (no it wasn’t) where a guy was getting pursued by another guy and also a girl… And not only that, but the other guy won…
… But also there’s, like, way better queer media out there. I’ve seen horror movies with more compelling gay themes/romances in them. Plenty of them. It’s actually pretty common. I’m well fed. And also he is literally related to the girl in question here, so dating the guy is literally the only correct choice if he had to pick one with a gun to his head.
The best choice for Jake in reality would have been none of them.
TL;DR: I am a grown man and they literally never do anything that warrants the label of “compelling”.

Let this be a living example that knowing the beliefs of any individual who wrote any piece of text- be it literature, articles, or posts- can and should drastically alter your perception on what the text is actually communicating, even if that knowledge has, on its face, changed none of the actual printed words. This is how application of real-world context works, and this is how it applies to any recorded medium.
It reminds me heavily of a quote from video essayist Jacob Geller, regarding the 1938 film Olympia- "It's different when Nazis do it". Olympia is a film that, on its face, simply depicts an artistic documentation of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. But within the context of its production taking place during the Nazi regime, with its director being a well known Nazi propagandist... The way the movie fixates on the power and elegance of the human form and Ancient Greek statues quickly shifts from being completely innocuous appreciation to the worship of what is perceived as the ideal forms of the "Aryan race". Suddenly, you understand the movie not to be a pretty inoffensive documentation of a historical event, but a propaganda piece.
Understanding the time period in which something was made, as well as the setting it was produced in/for, and whatever ideologies an artist may hold and experiences they've had is absolutely critical to getting a full understanding of anyone's work. There are some things that are near completely anodyne on their face, but the revelation of what the author thinks and feels about other people and the world around them totally redefines every word on the page.
This image is such a prime example of why context matters. This opinion, laid bare, stripped of context, is both inoffensive and nonsensical. No one's ever thought it to be lame to create your own nickname... But on its own, that's a harmless kind of wrong. ... But with the addition of them being marked as Anti-Trans (red) on Shinigami Eyes, a browser extension dedicated to crowdsourcing keeping track of Trans Friendly and Transphobic creators... Suddenly, "Nicknames" doesn't mean "Nicknames" anymore. Suddenly, you realize that "Nicknames" is code for "Chosen Names of Trans People". Suddenly this isn't about thinking choosing your own nickname is lame, this is about thinking that trans people shouldn't have the right to name themselves. Suddenly it's about invalidating identities, thinking they're worth mocking. Thinking that people who identify as trans are "just trying to be cool", and that they're not actually what they say they are, because you don't get to choose your gender nickname, that's something already decided for you.
Suddenly, you realize, it's not about "being lame".
It's about Transphobic Violence.
This is why you cannot ignore when an artist, author, essayist, developer, musician- so on and so forth- is bigoted. This is why you can't ignore the context behind their upbringing. This is why you can't ignore the context behind their lived experience, their ideals, their goals, their message. Yes, it may appear innocent on its face. Yes, it may look fine stripped from the context of it being written by an inevitably flawed human being. But what's really being said here? What do those words mean... To the one who wrote them?
Context redefines Text.
Even if the words didn't change.

Hello, pardon and I don’t want to be a bother but I would like to ask for your take on something. And if you’re not down to answer this question, that’s completely fine, you seem to make large opinion posts on a noteworthy basis so I understand if you don’t have the energy or motivation to give an opinion right now.
But I wanted to ask for your take on the ethics of enjoying Homestuck in the modern day. Many people such as myself and seemingly you as well enjoy Homestuck but are painfully aware of all the gross stuff in it. And as I see the comic pop up in more and more dni lists, with people claiming that enjoyers of Homestuck are supporting these things inherently, no matter the fact that most of us stand against Hussie and attempt to reclaim Homestuck as something to express joy and our identities in, it makes me wonder more and more the ethics of enjoying Homestuck. Since you seem to have thoughts on the matter, I was wondering if you’d like to share your take.
I once again want to stress though, absolutely no pressure to answer. I am not entitled to your time or hearing your opinion. You don’t know me, I don’t know you. I was just asking in case you wanted to speak about it.
Hi, Anon! This is a very interesting question, and you were right to assume I have thoughts on it. They might not be as long and complicated as some of my other essays, but they still exist, and I would quite like to share them. Thank you for the opportunity.
My opinion on The Ethics of Enjoying Homestuck is that I believe it's perfectly fine to do so. I also think it's perfectly fine to dislike, or hate, or not want to associate with it or any fans of it. This is a personal boundary set by and for the individual, and it's not my business to question, nor my place to cross it. However, I don't really agree with the way some people go about communicating or enforcing this boundary. I've seen some people put Homestuck and Harry Potter on the same level before. I've seen some say that enjoyment of either piece of fiction is, at least in part, comparable. I heavily disagree with this- and the fact that this is a point that comes up shows to me that there's quite a few people who don't actually fully understand why so many people are saying to stop supporting Harry Potter.
The conflation of the two things reads to me as if some believe that Harry Potter has been "cancelled for having a problematic creator"- and that's not wholly true. Yes, J.K. Rowling is, by definition, problematic, and she is the creator of the Harry Potter franchise, but people have drawn such a hard line against supporting the series not just because J.K. Rowling is Transphobic, but because she has honest to god legislative power. She is, as it stands, currently the backbone of the TERF movement, and is spending a lot of time and money to ensure that Transphobes dominate the government. Monetary support of Harry Potter pools into her funds, which adds to her ability to further Trans Genocide. Communal/Fandom support of Harry Potter increases her visibility as a public figure, which adds to her ability to further Trans Genocide. J.K. Rowling has made very clear statements saying that she takes any support of the Harry Potter franchise- any at all, including Queer/LGBT+ Friendly fan content- as support of her beliefs. Support of Harry Potter is a method of legitimizing and validating Transphobia, and is being used as a way to further Trans Genocide.
If J.K. Rowling was just an average Transphobe, the outcry would not be nearly as severe, and the line wouldn't be nearly as clear cut. It would just be disappointing, bring to mind the phrase "same shit as always", and many would make the personal choice to distance themselves from it. But that's not the reality we live in. We live in the reality where J.K. Rowling has sway on the government, and is getting real people hurt and killed.
Andrew Hussie, creator of Homestuck, however, is just some random asshole with no political power outside of his own vote. Yes, Homestuck is filled with plenty of unsavory elements- random out-of-place interjections of Hussie's own past bigotry included- but at the end of the day, Homestuck has no influence over government action. Hussie has no tangible political influence, and does not want to have tangible political influence. We don't even have evidence that Hussie still holds the same beliefs as he did during and prior to the creation of Homestuck. This is just some random indie comic, made by some random guy in 2009. J.K. Rowling is dangerously close to billionaire status, and using that power for evil.
It's fine to like something that's not very morally clean- or something made by a not very morally clean artist, during a not very morally clean point in time in a not very morally clean place in this world. It's okay. The fixation some have on this is OCD-inducing. The best that can be asked is that one recognizes the bigotry, and doesn't perpetuate them. That's all. You can read, watch, play, and enjoy just about anything, as long as you don't make the more unsavory elements out to be a good thing. Don't start acting like Racism is awesome, or Antisemitism is cool, or Transphobia is based, et cetera, and you'll be totally fine.
The ability to find value in something impure or unsavory is a valuable one. Some may not want to associate with that, or find the particular flaw in the work in question to be too uncomfortable to stomach, and that's fine, too. Not everyone can just sit through Era-Appropriate Casual Homophobia or Racism and come out feeling fine enough to keep going. I'd argue- hope, even- that most feel at least a bit bothered by such things. It's all about personal tolerance levels. No one's committing a moral crime by either enjoying it or not wanting to even look at it.

It will actually never cease to baffle me that people got so up in arms about the Trickster Mode “Caucasian” bit because “The Kids are Aracial”, and will parrot the point that “The Kids(/Trolls) are Aracial” to hell and back, when like… It’s just not true?
I’m sorry, but you physically cannot have a humanoid character design lack racial characteristics. The only thing you give away by trying to make an “aracial” character design is what you think the racial default is. Considering White Supremacy is the social default in the Western World, more often than not, people will view the “racial default” as white. It lines up with how “white” as an identity works. “White” has never had a set definition, it changes all the time specifically to exclude more and more people- like Jewish people, Italians, et cetera. “White” is defined, historically, as “Lacking Race”, so oftentimes “Aracial” tends to just mean “White”. “Aracial” features always completely exclude Black features, and that’s not by accident.
The character designs in Homestuck have white features. I’m sorry, you’re not convincing me that the Kids are meant to be entirely racially neutral when they’re consistently depicted in the comic as having straight hair and Eurocentric features. The Kids have always been white, it’s just that people view whiteness as the racial default and everything else as of an aberration of that whiteness. Getting mad at the Trickster Mode “Caucasian” bit for “saying the kids are white” or “confirming they are white” is completely unreasonable when they’ve never been depicted as anything other than little white kids by their designs the whole entire time.

ALPHA TROLLS RANKED BY HOW WRONG THE FANDOM AT LARGE IS ABOUT THEM:
This is a personal challenge, based entirely on my own experience and perspective, and also ranked from Most to Least Correct. I was bored, and thought this might be fun.
Putting this under a cut, because it's long as hell.
MEULIN LEIJON
People get her mostly correct, from what I’ve seen… Most of the time, fan content of Meulin is absolutely recognizable as Meulin, but her pride in her deafness + joy of learning new ways to interact with the world through/due to her disability is always removed, and I do not often see people tackle the Toxic Positivity aspect of her character. That seems less like character assassination, though, and more like a combination of people not actually playing through the Openbounds, people not being able to fathom disabled people (especially those who gained a disability later in life rather than being born disabled) being happy, and general fandom distaste for the idea of touching anything uncomfortable, especially when that uncomfortable topic is highly mundane, normalized, and potentially applicable to them or their loved ones. Meulin’s toxic positivity was, of course, commentary on Tumblr’s ecosystem at the time, so… It was much harder to touch back then.
ARANEA SERKET
People tend to get her general, broad strokes personality right, but unfortunately she gets treated pretty roughly for the crime of Being A Serket. People refuse to understand her motivations, and she often gets demonized for what she was doing around/during [S] Game Over, even though that was something she’d gotten pushed to and also was cool as fuck to watch. God forbid a woman do anything.
DAMARA MEGIDO
People are right about the racism, 100%. It is completely despicable, hard to look at, and extremely blatant. She does, however, have character outside of that. No, it isn’t “whore”, it’s more like “angry, dysfunctional abuse victim”, and she’s genuinely a very interesting and tragic character. But, again, people are right about the racism, so she gets to be placed way up here.
MEENAH PEIXES
She is such a chaotic little bastard. I love her. I really do. Please understand that she genuinely does not understand the concept of consequences. This girl didn’t have a Lusus, she didn’t have parents, it was functionally illegal to tell her “No, you can’t do that.” That would fuck up literally anyone’s moral compass. That’s not me hand waving away all the fucked up and bad shit she’s done, we all know what she did, but people tend to forget this aspect of her character and it pains me deeply, because it is a very genuinely interesting concept that I want to see more of. She’s capable of regret, we’ve seen her feel it, I just don’t think foresight is her forte. No one raised her to consider consequences, or help her experience them in a healthy way, because nobody raised her period.
Also, her ass is not butch, she is the girliest girl in the entire comic. She is about hot pink and glitter and kiss marks and unicorns and cute little puns and you will respect that. She is not masculine. Her ass is not masculine nor is she butch. Let her be her hyper-feminine self.
LATULA PYROPE
Please for the love of god there is more to her character than “Gamer Girl” and “Mituna’s Girlfriend”. You are falling for her fucking ruse. Please. Please. Please recognize that her entire character is about internalized misogyny, and being forced to overcompensate for misogyny in gaming circles as a gamer who happens to be a woman. Please. I’m begging.
KURLOZ MAKARA
His character is not that deep, it’s mostly just a string of events he is mysteriously, inexplicably involved with. The Makaras are extremely Function Over Form- their characters practically do not exist, they're mostly just plot devices that exist to push the story along. I'm sorry to Makara fans. You just invented a guy in your mind and decided he was real. He is also not that soft, though, and his relationships with both Meulin AND Mituna are not healthy. Hard to stop people from ascribing cutesy squishy lovey dynamics to random men who happened to have looked at each other once, though. Some people truly haven't graduated from 2012.
HORUSS ZAHHAK
I am begging people to consider that maybe the biggest issue here is not that he is “Bad Otherkin/Therian Representation” and is in fact maybe the fact that Hussie was actually making fun of Systems when he was writing Horuss. Because Horuss is canonically a system. He uses the word system. He uses the word switching. He uses the word host. He literally talks about his Plurality at length in extremely upfront, plain terms. I don’t know how him being “Bad Otherkin Representation” was and still is the main discourse about him. It makes me insane. That is a commentary that truly writes itself. Talk about having your priorities out of wack, honestly...
PORRIM MARYAM
No, she is not a MRA, she’s just a regular feminist who happens to live on a different planet with different politics and social hierarchies from Our Real World Earth’s USA. Whatever argument you’re about to pull out of your ass to say that she sucks is bad. She already explained what she meant by that, in more detail, very clearly, and she was right. Half the time she’s literally just giving you factual information about what Beforus was like, and literal plot synopses. She isn’t saying anything insane. She’s literally normal. I don’t know why people cannot handle or process this. Porrim has not ever said anything controversial. If you disagree with this you’re either misconstruing her on purpose or you fell for Kankri’s bait, and that’s just fucking sad at that point.
Also, she’s more than a sex object, and her tits are not huge. Honestly, half the shit she was saying was just “I am more than my sex life”, and so many people took that and made her main character trait her sex life. Just pathetic.
RUFIOH NITRAM
This man is a fucking war criminal and I will stop at nothing until he is behind bars for his crimes against Damara. Raging misogynist. Total fucking cunt. Just the worst. If I talk any more about this, this part will be 1,000 paragraphs long. But also, I’m begging people to recognize his relationship with disability, too. He was similar to Meulin in the sense that he didn’t mind his disability, and his biggest gripe with it was the way that Horuss tried to “fix” it… Which is an interesting way to expand upon how Beforus’s culling system is not only very explicitly ableist, but mimicking real world systemic ableism. I also want people to recognize that Hussie is actively having a conversation about the reclamation of slurs with Rufioh’s character, and how not letting people reclaim such language is doing nothing but giving the word power against them while stripping away their own personal agency. Rufioh’s a complicated guy, and he’s interesting and also the worst, and I am really tired of how he gets watered down to nothing but “Pretty Boy Victim Of His Inexplicably Psycho Ex”.

To this day I see people saying he was just Hussie making fun of SJWs. To this day. To this day people think Hussie was trying to make Every Tumblr Leftist look bad, and that he hates them Because They Are Leftists. When will people recognize that this is more of a commentary on the legitimate real flaws of Tumblr’s politics at the time. When. When.

What a about Caliborn makes him so cool in your opinion?
Go keep track of his progression as an artist alongside his development as a character and think about how these are intrinsically linked. Ponder the fact that he is both at his most obnoxious and at his most amateur when trying to ignore his unique style explicitly brought on by his canonical learning disability and mimic others rather than truly be himself. Consider how his explorations of art are genuinely cool, not a bad thing, and how we get some really neat multimedia stuff out of it.
Caliborn may be a shitty little teenage wretch but the way he is portrayed as an artist and as a disabled person is both really good and very real. It comes from a place of love. His learning disability is handled with a degree of gentle care that you would not really expect from Hussie. The place Caliborn's art style ends up in is so fucking sick and I actually unironically love it. The technique he uses is really interesting. It's intentionally reminiscent of an Etch-a-Sketch, and I'm a little obsessed with it.

This is so fucking good. I mean this seriously. He's right - that is some Pure Art Skill.
I just love the way art is employed as a necessary component of his character arc. It's so neat. You don't see visual cues that intricate too often. Usually it's just in character design, but watching his entire art style and even his medium of choice change several times over is fascinating. You can really tell Hussie had a lot of fun with him. He's also just really, really fucking funny. Just about every sentence that comes out of his mouth is Grade A Absolute Fucking Gold, and I'm honestly obsessed with his dynamic with Dirk. This may get me thrown to the wolves, but I personally think Dirk and Caliborn have way more chemistry than Dirk and Jake. Maybe that's because we actually see Dirk and Caliborn interact on screen... Lmao.
Necessary Topic: I don't know why people hate him so much. Like, I understand hating his misogyny and fatphobia, sure, but those are deliberate character points and not just Hussie-isms. I see people act like Caliborn is indicative of Hussie, as if Homestuck-era Hussie wasn't, like, famously really fucking good at writing female characters and absolutely not a misogynist. Caliborn's a parody of Homestuck Anti-Fans - which is a term we really ought to bring back, god, anti-fans are absolutely still a thing and good lord they're everywhere - who really were just shitty little bigoted haters. Calliope, the opposite side of his coin, was representative of, essentially, "the best kind of Homestuck fan" - an ultimately sweet young teen girl who willingly dedicates almost all of her time to this piece of fiction she loves so, so much, who draws a lot of fan art for the joy of it all, has OCs that don't fit any of the design conventions in Homestuck whom she pairs with the characters in it for innocent fun. Someone who has a lot of theories and analyses, writes a lot of fanfic, and is genuinely just having a lot of fun. Everyone loves Calliope. Even the characters in Homestuck love Calliope. They just think she's the cutest, sweetest little thing they ever did see. Caliborn was the worst kind. He sucks on purpose. No one likes him. He is a total nuisance to characters he is by all means trying to impress. I love them both.
It's also just funny that he's a canonical Intersex Transmasc who is probably Gay and this has, like, no relevance to anything about him, really. So no one really talks about it. Gender Hilarious, Gender Nefarious.

My Homestuck shipping take that would get me thrown in Fandom Jail is that I think Dave/John is canon, it's just not reciprocated and is only really applicable to early Homestuck, and that's where and how it works best. I honest to god do not think it works as a reciprocal romantic relationship. This is because John is not interested in them, and this is Dave's bisexual awakening that he's too afraid to act on.
Dave would not be comfortable in a relationship with John. I personally think he needs the fantasy of it more than he wants an actual relationship with him. There's inherent weight and value in non-reciprocal relationships/feelings, too. It's important for Dave that he feels the way he does, but that does not mean it would be a good idea or constructive to act on those feelings. It's all exploratory thoughts, and those are extremely valuable to the development of one's relationship with their queerness.

Why are you listening to Kankri, a known misogynistic petulant manchild, over Porrim, a known completely reasonable feminist woman, about the existence of misogyny? Are you dense? You're really listening to a man whose whole character is being an incorrect bigoted asshole over a woman about an issue that directly affects her personally? Vriska Serket is so influential that there is an entire subgenre of character and entire form of discourse named after her- labels of which will genuinely get retroactively applied to things which existed years before Homestuck did. Namely Azula and Asuka. If you say a character "is a Vriska", or that there is "Vriscourse" surrounding a specific character, everyone knows exactly what the hell you're talking about immediately.
Katya, meanwhile, is entirely manufactured. Manufactured Tumblr Sexymen/Tumblr Women do not count. They have never counted. A major part of what makes a Tumblr Sexyman or a Tumblr Woman is the unexpectedness. It has to happen naturally. That is the entire point. A majority of Katya's character was a rehash of the Vriska archetype anyway. She is a collective OC spawned from an unreality-based meme that happened a few months ago, and she will be forgotten quickly.
This is Recency Bias at its finest.
Vote Vriska. She reshaped all of fandom as a concept, and this entire website, as we know it. Cowards. Her unimaginable influence cannot be understated or undercut for a bit that does not exist.

Absolutely love seeing someone who's right about Damara, she deserved so much better. I really liked the brief interactions we see where she's talking to the beta trolls, where she's being a whole lot more friendly. Girl just wants some friends and she deserves some folks who treat her good.
Damara deserves the world. World’s most out of pocket way of dealing with assholes and getting them to never want to interact with you. Rufioh can absolutely eat shit, he deserves to catch WAY more flack for the way he treated and still treats Damara than he does. No one ever really shines a spotlight on just how terrible he is and was, because they’re just too busy fawning over how supposedly attractive he is. He’s pixels. He’s literally pixels, I don’t understand how this is getting to people so bad. The Homestuck fandom would fuck an active blender if it was gray and it’s age started with a 1.
Damara’s canonically very sweet and does want more friends, she’s just rightfully angry at the other Alpha Trolls for how they treated her like a punching bag. She’s allowed to be hostile, Meenah tried and succeeded in breaking her mentally and emotionally just to try to goad the others into being more competitive. We need more attention on that. She deserves so much better. Sadly, Rufioh’s “Psycho Ex” lines worked on everyone. >:/

Extremely firm No. He's just That Bad.
I don't trust a single god damn Homestuck writer, fan or official, to try to take Cronus Ampora and "redeem" him. He's the worst on purpose. That's his whole function. He's trying to bang 13 year olds, including ones he's related to. A 13 year old Karkat rejected his advances, and he stalked him to his house and tried to break into it. He's into eugenics. He's violently abusive. He's a sexual predator. He feels deeply entitled to the affection of others and their bodies, and mild rejection results in either violence or extreme emotional manipulation. He's so bigoted it's both nauseating and comedic. He knows all of these things and he does not care. He admits to knowing this about him. He admits he's doing it on purpose. He admits that he does not care for improvement, and he admits that he does not care that he is hurting people. He is expressly beyond redemption. That's the point. I don't want to see anyone trying to "redeem" a character who is, again, fundamentally irredeemable. Let him be the worst. That's the point. He is way more interesting that way.

can you elaborate on Latula having brain damage?
Latula was not born anosmic. That was something she gained through an accident, spoken of only in hushed whispers. She lost her sense of smell through physical trauma. She’s very intent on keeping this somewhat of a secret, and constantly downplays her anosmia being a disability. No one really knows what happened, not even Aranea. They just know that something happened, and Latula lost her ability to smell out of it. Latula is the only person that really seems to know what happened, and she’s not opening her mouth about it.
She’s a Knight of Mind, with Knights being notorious for overcompensating for their sense of having a fundamental flaw in or lack of their own Aspect.
Fundamental flaw in Mind, huh? One they keep tightly under wraps. That technically rules out Latula’s OCD- not only do we know that she’s medicated to help manage it, but she talks about it freely. Though she is, by Porrim’s words, “overcompensating for her gender”, that’s not really a Mind thing.
Do you remember her conversation with Kankri? Where it’s revealed that what Aranea meant by them having “complicated unrequited feelings for each other”, was that Kankri was creepily obsessed with her- to a literal stalkerish extent- and Latula was deeply not into it? There was a point in his ramblings where he starts talking about her Anosmia. He frames it as inspiration porn, and she’s quick to downplay.
The main bit here is calling Latula “brave” for “suffering” through a disability, when she barely counts it as one. She insists specifically on not making it into a big deal. Part of this is understandable- having your disability turned into inspiration porn right in front of your face is deeply unpleasant. But anosmia is a disability… But it doesn’t have much to do with Mind, does it?
Reveal Time: It is physically impossible to have an accident where you slam your head into something so hard that you lose your sense of smell… And not get brain damage in the process.
Her unique, extremely long-standing relationship with Mituna- you know, the one that she acts cagey about when the topic of his disability comes up- may actually be in part strengthened by a sense of kinship. It’s genuinely extremely likely her accident left her with far more than anosmia, and she’s just downplaying it out of a neurotic sense of self preservation. She is terrified of Culling.
Mituna had an incident of violent physical trauma that left him brain damaged, and now he takes a kind of medication to help mitigate problems that arise from it. No one really knows what happened except for Mituna, and Aranea can’t really get any details out of him, so she leaves it marked as an incident that made him lose his mind. Is it unlikely to assume, considering… Everything that’s going on here, that maybe they both have the same fundamental flaw in their sense of Mind?
