Pocket Guides to Zombie Survival, part two
hey remember when I was going to write zombies and borrowers? here's part two of that. (part one is here) pretty short, just like 1500 words cw: fear and other horror tropes that are implied by zombies, ‘it’ used to describe unknown probably-people tagging @whumpsday @da3dm
It didn't have a pulse.
Coop had been right on the man's wrist, she’d even leaned against the flesh for better leverage when she unfastened his watch. He was cold and silent and undeniably dead. He didn't bleed when her needle stuck.
She was still shaking as Rei dragged her up into the RV's engine compartment.  It was scary enough to try and imagine the something that could fell a giant, scarier still to find out that giants could get back up after they die.
The twins slipped past the not-dead man and worked their way up into the engine compartment. Rei poked around for the way into the cabin. Coop would’ve settled for taking refuge in the labyrinthian machine. She needed a minute to breathe and block out the pain as much as she could. She felt safe here. The not-dead man seemed dumber than the usual human. He hadn’t tried to follow them under the motorhome and he wasn't prying open the engine hatch to try and snatch them out.
Instead, he banged against the RV walls over and over again, with terrifying force. It was strong enough to leave the metal rattled. If he had hit her with that kind of power, she wouldn't have a broken foot, she’d be lucky to be left with a boot full of bloody paste. They had a hiding place, he wasn’t getting in, and she saw no reason to ruin it by poking around inside.
Rei disagreed and since she was the one who could walk, she was the one calling the shots. She also insisted that this was her area of expertise, but Coop thought that was a load of shit. This was well past anything either of them knew.
Rei cut through a thick, zig-zagged wall of cotton with a glass shard and into a bin full of human junk so common it almost seemed familiar. Papers on top of papers, rough brown napkins, clicker pens, a metal beamlight, and a plastic first aid case that Rei pointed out way more smugly than was necessary.
“I don’t need bandaids, I need you to help me put my shoulder back together,” Coop griped.
She slumped into a wad of napkins stacked up by the far wall. They weren’t as soft as she’d been hoping, but more comfortable than bare plastic. She stretched out her leg to give her busted-up foot a rest, at least, and watched Rei puzzle out the plastic locks on either side of the case.
“Isn't this the third time you got it popped like that? Can’t you do it yourself by now?” Rei asked over her shoulder.
“It hurts!”
“Shh, I was kidding, sorry. Just too freaked out to—” she swallowed the rest of her sentence and waved her hand vaguely towards her face. “Express. Not funny anyways. There’s probably Tylenol or something in here, just give me a minute to get this stupid thing open, and—”
The RV shook with an especially hard hit from the not-dead man and in the quiet that followed, heavy footsteps shuffled across the interior of the RV. They were getting closer. Coop went stiff, but Rei kept prying at the plastic clasp. She didn't hear—probably couldn't, with her lousy ear—and her back was turned so Coop couldn't give her a visual signal to please shut up.
There was a sudden click overhead and a blinding light as the wall gave out behind Coop. She went tumbling down towards the carpeted floor. She fumbled for her fish hook to latch herself onto a mountainous chair in front of her before she could get grabbed. The grapple successfully bit into the fabric, but with only one arm to hold on with, Coop was easily knocked loose from her line. She landed on her back right in front of the giant’s boot and whimpered. Rei was too far away to save her this time.
Coop flailed in an attempt to get away, to get anywhere, before the new giant crushed her. She almost made it a whole half inch before a shadow dropped over her. She looked up in horror as the giant jabbed at her with a thin metal club and knocked her back to the ground. Coop gasped for breath, expecting it to be her last, as the thin metal of her armor went concave, but the giant stopped as soon as they had her pinned. Coop squirmed helplessly against the rubber that threatened to cave in her chest.
The human’s eyes were as brown and mean as a hawk’s. Coop’s heart raced just the same as if she'd caught the eye of the devilish bird. But a hawk was almost a guarantee that something was about to die.
Here, Coop had no idea what might come next. No two humans acted alike. Already, it was the opposite of the giant outside—precise, with a light touch, but more than enough to keep Coop at her mercy. They could kill her just as easily as spare her.
They adjusted their grip on the club and knelt down for a better look at Coop. Even for a human, they—she, probably—was big: nice and fat, like she’d never even heard of hunger. She leaned against the nearby chair as she lowered herself down onto her knees, and both the seat and her own bones groaned under the strain. For a brief second, Coop recognized something in those eyes that looked more like fear than anger, but fear of what? Coop? The dead man outside? Was he that dangerous?
And then the giant whispered a question that made even less sense.
“Are you alive?”
---
Despite Kayla’s best efforts at keeping quiet, Nick was awake again, banging on the walls and groaning. She’d kept the curtains drawn. She was going mad from the quiet, if not the isolation. She knew the RV would only function for so long.
And now, something new.
Something had breached her lonely refuge. At first, she’d thought it was a squirrel or some other little creature. She had crept to investigate before it could chew through anything important, trying to ignore Nick’s mindless screams and babbles. As soon as she had opened the glovebox, the little intruder had fallen to the floor. It picked itself up immediately, apparently unharmed, and lurched across the carpet in an uneven shamble that made Kayla’s hair stand on end. She suppressed a scream and swung her cane at it to keep it from lurching towards her.
Her thoughts caught up with the present moment and she kept herself from shoving any harder even as she clutched the grip so hard it made her knuckles ache.
Is this thing wearing clothes?
Careful to keep the creature pinned, Kayla unsteadily crouched over it for a better look. She blinked in disbelief. The thing was dressed in garbage and looked, more or less, like a woman. It had a head full of blond hair messily braided away from its face. It was tiny, obviously, and had a fuzzy tail twitching off to the size, but seemed otherwise very human.
Outside, Nick screeched and again threw himself at the side of the RV so hard it shook. Looking like a person hardly meant much these days. Nick still looked human-ish, but he was dead and deadly. The one who had turned him had looked even more normal.
“Are you…alive?” Kayla whispered.
The creature at the other end of her cane froze, staring up at her with wide pink eyes. Its face twisted, not in mindless fury, but confusion. Kayla’s heart jumped. It understood her. It nodded.
Kayla leaned back, pulling her cane off the little intruder with wary optimism, when something else struck the back of her hand with an angry hiss. Startled, Kayla flailed to knock it away and it latched onto her knuckle with a sharp pinch.
Kayla leaned against the driver’s seat to catch her balance and reached to pull the second intruder away from her bare skin. It ducked out of the way with a snarl, baring teeth already tinted with Kayla’s blood. Whatever relief she’d felt at the other one apparently understanding her disappeared in a wave of sudden panic at being bit but something Other. Kayla swiped at it a second time and this time, the urgency got her moving quick enough to catch the shaggy-haired creature by the back of its cloak.
It screeched, flailing its legs against the empty air. Kayla glared at it, trying to assess if this thing was undead or rabid or what, when it managed to twist itself free of its cloak and drop to the floor below. It picked itself with a slight shake, giving Kayla only a brief glance before beelining for the other intruder.
But the biter didn’t move like the undead. It darted easily across the carpet, not attacking the other, but hastily heaving it up over her shoulders. Before Kayla could finish deciding if this was an attack or a rescue, they both disappeared under the passenger seat.
Neither of them answered when she whispered to them, leaving her to wonder and worry about just what the little bite on her finger might do to her.

“let’s see, the garden of recollection and the astral express have already made contact. the annihilation gang… i can’t really count on them. the knights of beauty haven’t given their answers, and as for that bunch at the tavern…”
he listened no longer to the drivel uttered by the gambler as he went on, the momentary apology falling as swiftly as aventurine moved on from the topic after ratio’s admittedly poor judgment, but more so at the mere mention of the cast of characters that were invited to the former prison, in particular the knights of beauty. everyone with an ounce of sense across the cosmos knew that no one’s call for the knights would be answered besides a lost cry from their deceased aeon idrila. ratio had to give them their reward of praise: many deemed their path worthless, but not even they would stoop so low as if to believe that they had to settle by falling into the land of dreams ( lies ) for their aeon.
ratio also surmised, once aventurine turned his back, immediately taking the chance to leave the room silently, was that the man already knew his connection to the knights of beauty.
minor as it is, but like all chances out in the grand journey, he’d become close to one. small meetings here and there should they cross paths in their own adventure, spreading their word, then passing along as quietly as if they had never met, like ships that pass in the night. despite that, and to ratio’s mild annoyance, even the ipc had a level of awareness on it. but keeping to job, he’d made the call to report aventurine’s slip up as the response of going home had been a bluff to depart, plotting as he often would to the side of the reverie to peer at the myriad at faces of the new arrivals discreetly, should they also play a part in this giant ploy.
fortunately, or unfortunately all things considered, that meant he noticed argenti the moment the knight would appear, as if the beamlight focused on him. ratio wondered momentarily the amount of points he should deduct for this, or perhaps retract his praise from before entirely. either way, he found himself standing and rapidly but calmly walking over to the other man before he entered the main perimeter, and where he’d certainly be noticed by the eyes of others ratio didn’t want to witness. how rather than mirroring the smile of delightment that argenti gave, he remained stoic, firmly pressing a hand against the wall behind the man’s shoulder, pinning him in place.
“…of all the places to cross paths, why must it be this one, formosus?” ratio questioned, his words sharp, accusatory, an arrow true much like the path he followed, but there remained the term of endearment he kept for the other man. “here i came to the conclusion that a place of lies would be ill befitting of the knights, so to find you stumbling here as well mires my thoughts. unless you’ve decided to try your chances on trying to spread the word of your aeon, but you would be heading into territory that you shouldn’t while here.”
truly, truly unfortunate. but to shoo argenti out marked a shorter encounter, who knows when the next they could meet with the vast arrangement of planets in the cosmos? while ratio planned on limiting his time bathed in the waters of dreams until needed, he still had a key and room of his own, all covered by the ipc. better to keep him under watch, and with a stern look, he said, “whatever the case may be, i’ll take you to my room then. do try to keep a low profile while you’re here, i’m already having to come up behind another idiot and clean up the mess he’s laid.”
It was a rare day that anyone would reach out to the Knights of Beauty.
Rarer still for it to not be the Masked Fools or the Mourning Actors, admittedly. Normally such a thing would have been ignored unless it was something of immediate urgency that whichever knight had caught the communication could interefere in. But this was a special case among all sorts of special cases.
An invitation from the Family of Penacony, to visit the World of Dreams.
The invitation had ended up in Argenti's hands during a brief stay at an IPC outpost—how the senders had known a Knight of Beauty would be there he was still personally suspcious of. It was...frivolous, really. His first instinct had been to dismiss it entirely for there was no purpose in entering an endless dream. There would be no traces of Idrila, the Aeon's teachings were solely of the beauty of the waking world. And there was no point in trying to spread Their word due to the heavy influence and faith in Xipe Penacony held to. To the point that the Family would likely stomp out any mention of Aeons other than the Harmony.
Quite an unsettling place to think about, if Argenti was honest.
A dream for all, controlled and carefully managed to be "perfect" by one group.
More like a nightmare, in his humble opinion.
So he'd been ready to toss it away, before a thought had struck him. An idea that would take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity considering Penacony was simply too expensive for a humble knight to visit normally.
Best to not squander this chance.
It had required a quick trip back home to pick some supplies up, but soon enough Argenti had found himself in the lobby of the former prison, looking around curiously rather than approaching the front desk. Something that proved to be beneficial once a familiar head of sapphire hair came into his sight. Before the Honorclad could raise his hand in greeting he was spotted, the other man approaching him rapidly while somehow still managing to not seem hurried. It was something that added to the good doctor's own beauty and grace. So much so that he simply smiled in pure honest delight as he was trapped against the wall.
Ratio's eyes were as stunning as the sunsets back in fair Verona, just like always.
"The Universe works in mysterious ways, dear Veritas, who am I to try and understand it?" Ah but how that term of endearment made his heart flutter. His smile turned softer, fondness and adoration melting off of him as he relaxed against the wall. "Certainly a place of dreams does not befit my Order as we were taught that true beauty can only be found in the waking world. So never fear on that front. And as for preaching, why, perish the thought!" Slowly, carefuly he inclined his head towards one of the suited individuals lurking around the lobby before he turned his eyes back to Ratio's. "It wouldn't do to intrude on the territory of baying hounds and try to speak of an ephemeral flower."
A subtle warning, one he knew the scholar would catch.
Tumblr media
With a small laugh he nodded, picking up his bag while tucking a blue rose into the other man's belt. It would be easier to discuss in the privacy of Ratio's room, anyway. There was a great deal he was already suspicious of when it came to this "luxury resort" planet. So Argenti bowed, hair falling over his shoulders. "Lead the way, my dear scholaris. And rest assured I plan on keeping a very low profile. I plan on changing clothes as soon as possible, to something less eye-catching than my armor. Ah, additionally... My reason for being here is for the benefit of my father, the playwright one I've spoken with you about? I believe he may enjoy a firsthand account of a dreamworld for future scripts."

I dreamed my neighbour died of a natural death and that there came a white beamlight from their house straight into the sky.
Dream-me stared for a while and then I saw her ghost go through the beam into the sky.
Then I woke up wondering if my neighbour is gonna die within a couple of weeks .-. Sometimes my dreams are strangely predictive.
