barbegazi
Tumblr media
High up in the Alps, where the border of Switzerland and France meet, winter has come and the temperature has grow cold enough to drive even the hardiest indoors, whether mountain climbers or animals seeking their den. There is one being though, that has been waiting all year for winter's chill to finally arrive.
Living in tunnels that run through the highest peaks of the Alps, is a strange creature called the barbegazi. While the rest of the region is enjoying warm spring and summer weather, the barbegazi hibernates, tucked safe and sound with their families in their mountain homes. Come winter though, once the temperature has dropped below zero, the barbegazi awake and slip out of their cleverly hidden tunnel entrances, slipping past the icicles that serve as camouflage to enjoy the season.
Barbegazi, according to Swiss folklore, is a winter gnome that lives so far up in the mountains that they never even dip as far down them as the treeline. The barbegazi love the snow and, from all appearance, the snow loves them as well. Its said that a barbegazi can dig through the winter white so quickly that they can disappear into it in only seconds, leaving humans who might have ventured up the mountains mystified as to where they went. Barbegazi don't just dig down into snow. It's said that if one is ever buried under snow, no matter how deep, they will be able to easily dig themselves back to the surface again. Handy in a region where avalanches are always a danger.
Don't think barbegazi are afraid of avalanches though! Quite the contrary. You see, these gnomes are all born with excessively large feet. These large feet act like built-in-snowshoes and allow the barbegazi to run across the snow faster than rabbits, leaving hardly any trace of their passing. What's more the barbegazi also use their big feet like skis and there's nothing a barbegazi loves more than ridding the chaotic, surging snowfall of an avalanche as it plunges down the side of the mountain.
These mountain gnomes aren't malevolent and its a good thing for hikers, skiers and mountaineers that they aren't. Just like the tommyknockers of a previous post, barbegazi can warn of soon-to-be danger. Any experienced human going up the mountains, once the temperatures drops, knows to listen carefully for a whistling sound. The barbegazi might have a need for speed but they know humans don't and if one of them is around just before an avalanche is set to come crashing down the mountainside, it will whistle its warning if it sees anyone in danger of being in the rushing snows path. Even more, barbegazi have been said to dig people trapped by avalanche snow out again. This kind of care-taking extends to all the creatures of the mountain the barbegazi lives on and it will protect its mountain friends from the worst of the winter as well as guide lost sheep back to their flock during snowstorms.
Other than their large feet and small stature, how can you recognize a barbegazi? They've got icicles where their beards and eyebrows should be! In fact, its thought that their name is actually a corruption of barbes glacées, which means 'frozen beards'. They also all wear suits made of white fur that cover them entirely from the neck down to the ankles. Beyond whistling, they're known to use hoots to communicate across distances to each other, a sound that's often mistaken for the howl of the wind.
So, next time its winter and you're out treaking through the Alps - good Lord! what is wrong with you? Get inside! - just remember to keep an eye out for the icicle-haired barbegazi and to take them very, very seriously if you hear them start to whistle.

Excerpt from chapter 1: The two unlikely friends sat in companionable silence for a while dwelling each on their own thoughts and listening to the soft snoring of their sleeping companions and the quiet crackling of the fire. Then there were other sounds. At first an almost imperceptible shuffling like a blanket dragged across the floor. As the noise came closer it became more distinct, a soft tapping of furry paws on stone. A dozen paws at least, and not tiny ones. Without making a sound the Witcher reached for his sword. Maybe the creatures had not noticed them yet and would just pass by their little side cavern? But no such luck. Soon Geralt and Regis could see the glow of one pair of huge, pale eyes in the entrance. Then two. Three. Finally there was a whole group of creatures, seven or eight of varying height, maybe more behind them. They kept standing there, not moving, not making a sound. Geralt and Regis did likewise. Even with their enhanced night vision they could only make out vague, furry shapes against the glow of their fire. And the eyes. Now the creatures started to whisper, first very quietly, then increasing in volume, a murmur turning into an agitated chatter of squeaking, babbling, puffing and rumbling noises. They seemed to argue about something in a language that did not resemble any human one, nor any other language the Witcher had heard. They still did not move.
Milva, however, began to stir, woken up by the strange noise. Cahir, next to her, too. Only Angoulême was still fast asleep oblivious of the possible threat the company was facing. Geralt motioned his comrades to keep quiet and not move. Then, as suddenly as it had started, the chatter subsided and one of the creatures, the biggest one, slowly entered the cave and shuffled toward the fire. Cahir noiselessly inched his hand closer to where his sword lay ready to jump up the second the Witcher, who had grabbed his sword more tightly, gave the signal to fight. Milva did likewise with her bow, her eyes glued to the mysterious being that was advancing toward them ...

Also, it's never clearly explained what a barbegazi actually is. They're just described as fluffy lumps with sharp teeth and this is the only official(?) art I can find of them that fits this description

Winter Solstice for a Modern Witch
This is the second part of my winter solstice post. This post will focus on more personal or UPG-based content rather than historical accuracy, though there will be some of that too!
Tumblr media
Modern Winter Solstice
The winter solstice may be the shortest day of the year, but after it passes we see the days begin to get longer again. Throughout history and even now there have been many myths and celebrations associated with the solstice. Some festivals were in honor of gods, and others paid respects to the sun itself, either way, we can learn from the past to find ways to celebrate the solstice in the modern day!*
If you’re looking for info on the history of the winter solstice as well as a list of some holidays held on or around the solstice, check out this post!
Festivities and Celebrations
Feasts
Bonfires
Play in the snow
Bake or cook a sharable amount of food in honor of the giving season
Kiss under the mistletoe
Practice divination, whichever form suits your fancy
Hold or attend a get-together
Give gifts! This is something done in different cultures around this time of year and can easily be incorporated into your celebration.
Make wreaths either out of real or faux plants
Correspondences
All of these are optional and not all of them are going to be applicable. Take what you will and leave what you please~
Deities and Divinities
Boreas, Cailleach, Despoina, Marzanna, Morozko, Khione, Kuraokami, Skaði, the Great Winter God (冬大神), Tengliu, and more winter related deities.
Spirits
Yuki-onna, Jack Frost, Yeti, Barbegazi, Nisse, and more winter related spirits
Colors**
White, Silver, Blue, Indigo for the cool winter nights
Red, orange, yellow, gold for the warmth of the sun as daylight returns to us
Plants
Yew, Mistletoe, Pine, Rosemary, Holly, Ivy, and evergreens were all traditionally used across different cultures during or near the solstice or holidays.
Make sure that if you’re using real plants that you keep them away from kids and pets or you can opt for the faux versions.
Crystals/Rocks/Metals**
Snowflake obsidian (I mean, c’mon, it’s in the name)
Gold, Amber, Carnelian, Sunstone, and others related to the sun.
Clear quartz, Aventurine, Amazonite, Moonstone and others related to new beginnings as the solstice is close to the new year and marks a new season.
Offerings or Devotional Acts
Deep clean your space - not just spiritually but physically! We spend a lot more time indoors during the winter season, so you want to make sure it’s a good experience.
A plate at the table - it’s a common practice across many cultures to lay a plate out for deities or spirits.
Pray - pray to the relevant winter spirit or deity in your faith or religion.
Bring greenery indoors - this could be a Christmas tree, but you could also get some houseplants or create wreaths of festive plants and offer them to your relevant deities or spirts.
Decorate your altar with seasonal items
Burn a Yule log
Alcohol - I’m partial to mulled wine this time of year but you could also do a mulled cider or a wassail (thanks @ breelandwalker for the recipes!)
Make donations to charities and organizations or just donate to those in need.
Make oaths similar to how one would on New Year - this time of year was seen as the beginning of a new year to some, or it came close as it does in the Gregorian calendar. During the Nordic Yule oaths were made (often followed by drinking!) during festivities.

*Be aware of where your traditions and practices come from and make sure that you’re not taking from closed practices and cultures. A quick google search is usually all it takes to find out if a practice or celebration is closed or not.
**This will depend on your personal correspondence but I’ve listed some as examples!

Forever amused at someone likening the knocker & barbegazi under Mount Gorgon to Avallac'h's peronal nightclub bouncers.
Imagine his giving his aterlier's address to the flaminika: pass this here on to the witcher, will you -> "this way to the gaping pit of doom." Where his chums are imbibing; excited to witness the nightmare fuel that is a witcher with their own eyes. And that's just it: they're his chums, these creatures. They take orders from him. He has either brought them hooch or has taught them to distil it. He has probably taught them common tongue. They're like children, he tells Geralt. How often has Crevan sat with them, chatting and sipping? Was it for the sake of an alliance with the natural protectors for the elven graveyard? Or a semi-conservationist effort toward these creatures? Or - and I firmly believe in this - Crevan is fascinated with monsters, mutants and other odd pieces of evolution (& creation) in the universe as a matter of habit. Do the little monsters miss him when he is gone?
The scene is such a gem, through and through, and yet people primarily remember painting cocks on a wall.
Also the way Avallac'h's remains totally unimpressed with Geralt being mowed down by his horrific vision: ah yes, naturally you have screwed everything up. While Geralt flaps about on the floor like a confused fish, calling out to his friends and ready to GO, and Crevan's just: bitch, did I not tell you to shush!?

Bionicle Folktales I’ll Possibly Do
Hey, to any Bionicle fans out there, I’ve been having an odd idea lately. It’s not exactly a fanfiction, but I have thoughts about making six or so different little folk tales/fairy tales of the Bionicles, being a Matoran, Toa, or Turaga, encounters different types of fairies/ mythical creatures, depending on their respective element or region. I don’t mean the little people with wings, either; I mean the older kind, otherworldly, scary humanoid beings from old European folklore who you don’t want to upset or mess with.
It’s a blurry idea in my head, but an idea that’s stuck in my mind for some time.
My first idea that came to mind was the Onu-Matorans. Being that they live underground, under mountains, in caves, and their village is under a mountain, easily what came to mind are the underground folk of Scandendavia. This includes dwarves, dark elves, the huldra/skogsra, the nisse, trolls, and the tusser. But the one I think of most is the gnome. Not like the nisse or garden gnome, but an elemental, spirits of the earth, an ugly little humanoid creature who can walk through earth and rock as if they were air, is rarely seen by humans, and is said to be deceptive, cunning, and evil. It makes me wonder how long an Onu-Matoran like Onepu, Taipu, or Nepuru, or Onua or Whenua would encounter such a being. Maybe Onepu or Taipu could be digging in a particularly or unusually deep part of the mines of Onu-Koro or exploring a remoter part of the caves, when suddenly, out of the earth walks the ugliest little thing they’d ever seen, and certainly not a Rahi. And then the gnome may do something bad to the Matoran/Toa/Turaga.
My second idea involves the Ga-Matorans, which has some easiness since all the Ga-Matoran who ever were are all female, and there are so many water spirits and mermaids, most of whom are female. This includes mermaids, like the melusine and the merrow, but also mermaids that aren’t really mermaids like the rusalka and the siren, freshwater spirits like camenae, and water nymphs, such as the Naiad and Nereid, the elemantal and spirit of water like the undine, and a special group of seal mermaids called selkies. I’ve even thought of drawing Gali come across the Sea Mither. But then I thought about the Nixie, a type of freshwater mermaid who have fish tails, but can change into human legs at will, and in form with legs, they have slanted ears and their skirt or the hem or their clothes are wet. I think there’s a Ga-Matoran called Nixie. I haven’t seen her in the story yet, but maybe the folktale could be that she’s away from Ga-Koro, wondering the lakes and rivers, when she comes across the Nixie. Maybe the Nixie will me unfriendly malignant, maybe it’ll be unharmful and nice.
As for the others, all I can think of are what fairies they’ll encounter, but picking one out isn’t so easy, especially for the fire, ice, and stone Matorans. For the Le-Matoran, I’ve either thought of harpies, dryads, huldra/skogsra, or the elemental and spirit of air, being sylphs. Then there’s the Ta-Matoran, my top three pics being either the samodiva, a lampad, or the salamanders, the elemental and spirit of fire. As for the Ko-Matoran, I’ve thought a lot about the Yuki-onna, even if she’s from Japanese folklore rather than Europe. I’ve also thought about the jotuns and the barbegazi for the ice people. Po-Matoran are the hardest, because earth and stone are... pretty much the same, although one lives underground and digs while the other lives overground and carves. If I can’t do gnomes or trolls, then I guess the basilisk would be fine since it lives in the desert. Maybe I should try golems.
But it’s just a blurry, yet common thought. And hey, “Bionicle” is part fantasy.
Update, 6/23/2022:                                                                                                                My idea for the Ta-Matoran and the fire fairy may have expanded a bit. It’s with the samodiva. It’s a forest spirit/nymph, but it also has quite an affinity with fire. She can fly with her magic flowing gown of white feathers, has long loose (usually blond) hair, pale glowing skin, and fiery eyes. She’s often hostile and dangerous to humans, whether she seduces them and drains them of their life energy and then torture them by exhausting them to death for trespassing in her forest, or she turns to a fire throwing monstrous bird at her enemies, or the mere sound of her voice driving one crazy. As for her fire powers, she can burn crops, bring droughts, and make cattle die of high fever. Most of her power comes from her hair; if it’s damaged in any way, she’ll either disappear entirely, or lose her powers and beauty entirely.
This made me think of that forest right next to Ta-Koro. Perhaps Kapura could be... practicing in the charred forest when he comes across a samodiva, and something bad happens. Or maybe Matoran are mysteriously vanishing in the forest, or are instead found gone insane. Perhaps it was Jaller’s gaurds that were sent to that forest for patrol or something and never came back, or driven mad, and then he, Kapura, or Tahu fight the samodiva and wind up defeateing her by damaging her hair, or even kill her by having her land in a bush of thorns, making her evaporate. If only the forest wasn’t charred... Had it still been green, the samodiva would’ve been perfect.
Again, I may or may not do this Bionicle folk tale thing, but this was just another possible story idea if I indeed do.

The Norc
The Norc, known as Nork, Norgg, Nörggele, Nörggeli, Dellermännle or Khaasermandl, is a mythical figure primarily found in the eastern Alps.
Appearance
The Norc is depicted as a small humanoid figure that typically wears ragged clothing, often oversized for its small stature. Despite that, it also owns finer blue garments which it wears on special occasions. It is characterized by an exceptionally long or seemingly endless lifespan combined with a still aging body, leading to its portrayal as a very old person with a long ice-grey beard. Additionally, it is described as having notably large or "duck-like" feet, which makes walking in a manner similar to humans challenging for the Norc.
Behaviour
The Norc constructs its home inside hills, and such a burrow is referred to as a "Norggenloch", which translates to "Norc hole". Little is known about the interior of these holes.
Norcs exclusively inhabit the wilderness and lead a gathering lifestyle. Due to their often very old age they cannot hunt or farm and depend on others, such as humans, for sustenance. In the winter, they often visit human homes to seek warmth and shelter.
In terms of personality, the Norc, while not dangerous at all, leans more towards the mischievous side. It remains grumpy throughout the day, often complaining about everything. It enjoys playing harmless pranks when the opportunity arises. Even if someone is helpful to the Norc, it doesn't take long before the Norc abandons its gratitude and begins complaining about its helper. However, the Norc can also prove to be a beneficial creature when it assists in herding or harvesting wheat.
As mentioned, the Norc can get very old or might be even incapable of dying at all. There are two explanations for this phenomenon. The first involves a special diet consisting of roots and herbs, while the second is a Christian narrative suggesting that Norcs are fallen angels.
Relation to the Orc
Although the Norc is typically depicted as mischievous rather than harmful, there are instances where it is said to engage in harming actions, such as hurting or killing cattle. This confusion may arise from its potential association or shared origin with the Orc.
Origin
The etymology of Norc is uncertain, however, a relation to the Orc might be possible. In some dialects of Alemannic, the term Norgg is used to describe a stunted creature, an untidy person, or a clumsy worker. When considering only the appearance, the Norc bears a resemblance to the Swiss Barbegazi, both of which are small beings known for their disproportionately large feet.
