Michelle Yeoh Makes Oscars History as First Asian Best Actress Nominee Michelle Yeoh continues to prove that Hollywood's bamboo ceiling is slowly being dismantled. On Tuesday, the 60-year-old screen legend became the first actress of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars. The prestigious nod is for her critically acclaimed performance as laundromat owner and multiverse jumper Evelyn Wang in A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once, which also led the pack with a total of 11 Oscar nominations. Despite Merle Oberon being nominated in 1939 for her role in The Dark Angel, the India-born actress purposefully hid her heritage, meaning that the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star is the first self-identifying Asian woman to earn a leading actress nomination after 95 years. Not only that, but Yeoh's nomination is made even more significant given the well-documented dearth of on-screen Asian representation, with the very few examples that do exist being ridden with stereotypes and yellowface. So even though on-screen Asian representation (especially when it comes to non-East Asians) still has a long way to go, Everything Everywhere All at Once will likely be a game-changer. After all, the film has dominated this year's awards circuit and Oscars are no exception, seeing as how it's also in the running for Best Picture, with Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan also up for Best Director. Meanwhile, Ke Huy Quan is the current frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor, and both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu have earned individual nods for Best Supporting Actress. On the heels of the announcement, Yeoh told Deadline that she sees the nomination as a larger victory, saying that "you tell stories because it’s important for that story to be told" before adding that there's a "need for our Asians to turn around and say, ‘We need this,’ because it just validates that we deserve to have a seat at the table, and we deserve to be part of all this.” "I think what it means to me is all those Asians out there go, 'You see, it's possible. If she can do it, I can freaking well do it as well.' That is the most important thing," she said. "I'm very ordinary. I just work very hard. There are so many brilliant actresses, actors out there who know that they have a seat at the table."Yeoh added, "All they have to do is find an opportunity and get there."You can see all the nominations for the 2023 Oscars here.Photo via Getty / Jamie McCarthy https://www.papermag.com/michelle-yeoh-asian-oscars-nominee-2659304608.html

have you heard of the bamboo ceiling and do you think it affects you in your career?
Yes, I've heard of it, but I think I've been lucky enough to avoid it thus far. My library career has largely been in one institution where part of the focus is on Asian materials, so my ethnicity has actually been an advantage in the roles I've worked in. Having said that, while I am mixed race, I think I look more white than Chinese, and only my middle names are Chinese, so both in person and on paper I'm less obviously mixed race. It's a weird space to be in, that's for sure.

El WiWi! Thank you @artsyunderstudy for the tag. I just re-read The Hunger Games after I finished The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last week and I am gutted. I got really into this series again, since I am following a class on social and political philosophy and it's wild.
Last week I posted something from Just Some Guy and @you-remind-me-of-the-babe and @bookish-bogwitch wondered whose POV it is. At this point I am not sure who knows of my boy Matty Chris D., but it was my boy Matty Chris D., full name Matt Christopher Davis, or also known as MCD. Just Some Guy is Matt's full 8 years at Watford as Simon and Baz's classmate. Aka, it's Snowbaz, from a 3rd person POV of a character who couldn't care less about them. They're more of a nuisance to him.
Since it's completely different from what the fuck Simon and Baz had going on, it gives me some room to add some things to the WOM that was just never important for the plot of Carry On:
I get a job in miss Possibelf’s office, which consists of cleaning and ordering. John decides to work out on the grounds. Leslie and Luis decide to work as kitmen for the football team. Ryan cares for the plants. Arnold helps in the kitchens. Scott also gets an office job, but at the Minotaur’s office. Sam is from a rich family (not an Old one, mind you!) and doesn’t see the need to work. “Do you know if Simon Snow got a job?” Arnold wonders one day. He’s staring at something and when I follow his gaze, I see the usual trio: Simon Snow, Penelope Bunce, and to my dismay, Agatha Wellbelove. (Yes, I am still not over Agatha.) “Dunno, don’t care,” Sam says. “He’s too busy trailing some bunnies, or something,” Luis says. “Hares,” John corrects him, “The Six Hares.” “So, does he have a job?” I ask. John shakes his head. “Makes sense,” Arnold says, “He’s so caught up in the Chosen One shit, I bet he and his friends don’t even know that Watford has jobs!”
Yeah, they probably don't. Y'all can thank @cutestkilla for this again. Matty's job will come back to haunt him.
And now, the weather: @quizasvivamos @coffeegleek @caramelcoffeeaddict @raenestee @tectonicduck @nightimedreamersworld @urban-sith @thnxforknowingme @captain-aralias @you-remind-me-of-the-babe @cerriddwenluna @bookish-bogwitch @confused-bi-queer @that-disabled-princess @special-bc-ur-part-of-it @larkral @cutestkilla @wellbelesbian @martsonmars @facewithoutheart @shrekgogurt @rockitmans @bitbybitwrites @whatevertheweather @theotherhufflepuff @shame-is-a-wasted-emotion @esilher @kurtsascot @blackberrysummerblog @nightimedreamersghost

Visitation
When she went through the door, the rays of the midday sun passed through the window of her bedroom, they painted floral patterns on the wall, like lilacs and daisies with light for petals that stretched down from the ceiling and trickled down the edge of the baseboards, she gazed at them, wistful and lingering, brimming with unspoken desire to pick them, perhaps to have a bouquet made of…

@1908jmd @coffeegleek I know Stephen Hawking is her bio dad. He might've been her biological dad, but Pierce raised her, so that kind of makes him more her dad than Stephen. I just don't think a lot about it, since Ken Jeong's casting happened around the same time as Gina Gershon's casting, aka the moment me and a lot of people were like "prayer circle for Blaine's mom to be Filipina" and then Brittany got the Asian actor as a parent. Wack. We know they can find people. We saw it in ASC: Versace.
I am thinking about switching it up in the Blaine chapter by making Blaine's dad the Filipino one, and then his mom the white one, cause you know, Gina Gershon. And I am using this fic to explain things that happened in Glee, even though I still don't know how to explain Cohen-Chang.
Re: upbringing, that's gonna be a part of this fic as well. All the characters are relatively far removed from their cultural roots, albeit in different ways and different "amounts". Being stuck between the West and the East is something that I think a lot of diaspora kids can relate to so *rubs hands* ohuhuhhuuhhohohhh it's free therapy I guess.
