You know those people that buy Victorian homes with tons of color and character and gut them and turn them into sad modern beige shadows of their former glory? I鈥檓 like. Whatever the opposite of that is.
Stay tuned as I continue to cram as much decorative whimsy as possible into our all white new-build modern home. Wallpaper is Spoonflower and paint is Farrow and Ball鈥檚 oval room blue. Thanks to sales and a thrifted mirror, this project cost $175! 馃憣鉂わ笍

Absolutely random question, but does anyone have any bathtub recommendations?
We're replacing our original cast iron tub from the 1940s (60 x 30"), and while I've found a few things in store and gone "ooh nice!" when I look them up later, the reviews are middling at best.
And no, before anyone asks, we can't refinish the original. The fumes from the paint would mean I'd need to vacate the house for over a month due to health reasons (we did it once before, right when we moved in, and I was ill for weeks after), so replacing it is the better option. (Plus, we are opening up the walls anyway to look at the plumbing. Pray for us.)
I was tempted to go with a steel tub, but it sounded so LOUD in the store it kinda put me off. Are they quieter when they're installed? Or would all my showers sound like torrential rainfall under a tin roof?
My chronically pained butt is also eyeing whirlpool tubs, even though I know they're supposedly a nightmare to clean. I just think the swirly hot water would fix me. For a time, at least.

What do you mean when you say birch sheets? The cabinets in my apartment are kind of rough inside and I've been trying to find better liners than the kind of rubbery stuff
I hope it's okay that I pulled this out to turn into a post of its own, because I took some photos to share :D When I say "birch sheets" I'm just referring to thin 1/8" (3mm) sheets of birch plywood, cut into planks. Here's what they look like installed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two images of cabinets in my home; one, stocked with toilet paper, the other with a large bin in it. Both have long, thin planks of wood covering the original floors.]
I was having an issue with my bathroom cabinet (on the left) because the bottom of the cabinet was water damaged before I moved in, and wasn't molding or anything but had begun to sag. I wanted some stiff thin boards I could pop into place to make a clean, flat floor without having to replace the entire cabinet. I found these birch sheets that were the perfect length, but I had to order like 10 of them and only needed 3 for the bathroom, so I put the rest in a cabinet in the kitchen that happened to have an ugly-looking floor (and apparently misplaced several, not sure what happened to them). It really spruces up the look of a grotty cabinet.
Anyway, this year I was contemplating re-lining my upper kitchen cabinets; I put paper liners down when I was renovating before I moved in, but those only last so long and that was five years ago. I thought I'd install some birch sheets instead, which wouldn't warp or shred the way the paper liners have. My plan is to cover them in freezer paper, pop them in, and then just pop them out every so often and re-line them, which is easier than trying to put the paper straight into the cupboards (awkwardly located for that kind of work) or trying to remove the shelves.
I ordered the ones for the cabinets from somewhere new to me, so can't vouch for the quality yet; I was able to order them custom-cut to the size I wanted at that page, and while it's slightly more expensive per piece, I also only have to buy as many pieces as I need and they should fit snugly, so it's less expensive overall as a purchase. I'll post up when they arrive and I install them!

While this may look like a lovely, house it's actually a WTH House. You've never seen a reno job like this. Think columns and posts. 2008 build in Marietta, Georgia, this 5bds, 5ba home is priced at $923K (Nope.) The home may have not actually been built in 2008, b/c sometimes, the real estate will give the year that it was completely renovated.
Tumblr media
The first thing we notice is that they cut part of the 2nd floor to make a 2-story entrance hall.
Tumblr media
You can't convince me that this doesn't look like a funeral home setup.
Tumblr media
Here is the first glimpse of the posts. Apparently, they cut out every wall that existed and, without regard for support walls, they just left all the corners and made them into posts. Note the silly little wainscoting.
Tumblr media
Ah! I was wondering what those few inches of light above fireplace were. It's what may have been a 2nd fl. bedroom window.
Tumblr media
This is insane. 3-pronged posts all over the place. They even cut around the doorways. (Well, at least you can see the original footprint of the house.)
Tumblr media
This is the view from the new 2-story entrance.
Tumblr media
Upstairs, they cut a few pieces of wall out of the hallway and also made a small balcony on the right.
Tumblr media
View from the balcony.
Tumblr media
They opened it up to make it open concept. I'm sorry, but open concept isn't a maze of posts. Somehow they get the place to stand up.
Tumblr media
I love the wood here in the hall, and that they left the niche. (I'm wondering if that wasn't a dumbwaiter, though.) What I don't like, is the stupid frame they put around the light switch.
Tumblr media
Oh, this is cool. After a big meal, step into the hearth and burn those calories.
Tumblr media
Don't worry, it's private- they can't see you from the kitchen table b/c it's blocked by a flatscreen on the dining table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen is new, of course. This would make a nice bar, rather than a small appliance parking lot.
Tumblr media
Here, they're showing off the "beamed/coffered" ceiling they made with beadboard and molding.
Tumblr media
The bedrooms are small, but they have nice shutters.
Tumblr media
What a great idea, they can steam the clothes.
Tumblr media
Just so ya know, the other bedrooms have plain ceilings.
Tumblr media
Look at the mini park at the end of the street.

Friends, countrymen, tumblerinas鈥攍isten. If you're ever in the process of doing a home renovation and you hear a little voice in the back of your head say "maybe I should turn it into an open floor plan" ... don't.
That's the Devil talking.

We鈥檙e trying to get multiple projects finished this weekend. Today, I tackled the downstairs half bath which was the most boring white closet of a room. Took down the mirror, spackled, and got the wallpaper up. Once it dries, I鈥檒l cut the edges, hang the mirror, and get some molding going. I鈥檓 already seeing my vision come together and it is 馃敟.

The impromptu home renovation is mostly done 馃帀馃帀馃帀
Yesterday I:
Refinished the strip of wood that was being used for a coat rack in the entryway, resealed it, and installed new brass hooks.
Switched out the switch panel for the same "Victorian" brass ones we have in the living room.
Got all the trim in the entryway finished.
Drilled and installed all-new brass drawer pulls on the heavy cedar built-in closet in the hallway. Apparently, the ones that were there were held in place with paint because the screws had snapped off inside 馃槵 (No big deal, not like we open and close those drawers every day.)
Got the first coat of blue paint up in the hallway.
Today I:
Got the second coat of paint up in the hallway.
Got most of the trim done.
Spilled a lot of gloss on the floor and swore a lot.
Cleaned it up.
Re-lined all the built-in-drawers because your girl is allergic to cedar, and that's where we keep all our linens 馃檭
Tomorrow I need to:
Touch up some of the trim in the hallway where my hands weren't as steady as I would have liked.
Put the built-in drawers back in place.
@mothman-etd is going to help me finish installing the new door knob in the entryway.
Try to get the ceiling panels up in the entryway and install the new light fixture, but no biggie if we don't.
We're doing what we did in my office with the faux beams, though I haven't decided if we should go with white or pink yet. I guess it will depend on how much paint we have left tomorrow 馃槄
But otherwise, it's just cleaning up on Monday and putting everything away.
And then, THEN, I can DECORATE.
HOLO GLITTER TREE, HERE WE COME 馃巹馃巹馃巹
---
*I need to redo one of the living room walls because one of the drawer panels I had leaning against it gouged fuck out of it and left a big white mark in the lovely gloomy blue. But that shouldn't take too long.

New shed is done! B built our new larger shed toward the back corner of the yard, which is such a better spot compared to where the old one was (right outside the bedroom window, almost right up against the house). Photos to show before and after cleanup of the demolished old shed. Here鈥檚 to a much quieter, more relaxing holiday season now that this project is done. 馃榿馃憣馃徎
