Chup Review
Tumblr media
November 27, 2022
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Many films have been made on the film industry. Films that show the intricacies of the process through the eyes of an artist integrated within it. But few have shed light on the tumultuous relationship between a filmmaker and a film critic. The two professions are constantly at loggerheads. It’s a never-ending battle due to the refusal of each to understand the job of the other. Chup uses a fictional tale of a serial killer that targets film critics to comment on the filmmaker-critic relation. This psychological thriller relies less on suspense and more on the interesting characters and passionate story that attempts to burn bridges between the opposing professions.
The strongest aspect of Chup is the intrigue. The buildup of how these four characters and two parallel stories will converge. And the way in which the contrasting elements of the multiple narratives lead to an exhilarating climax. This is further enhanced by its passion for the art of cinema. Writer-Director R. Balki made this film out of a pure love for the process of filmmaking. It is an ode to classic cinema with many references to the art behind old school romance. It specifically pays homage to Guru Dutt and his classic film, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and focuses on the relevance of that film in the filmmaker-critic debate.
Though the film is a multi-starrer, Dulquer Salmaan is the star of the show. Elaborating on the details of his performance would reveal too much of the mystery, but his ability to transfer between the different shades of his character is brilliant. While the remaining actors do well in their respective roles, much of the film’s impact rests on his shoulders.
Where Chup falters, is in its investigative suspense. While the police chase of this brutal criminal is smart, the characters pursuing the case have barely any background or emotional depth. Despite having considerable screen space, Sunny Deol has little to do in the film. Though he and Pooja Bhatt do well in the roles written, they have little impact due to the lack of characterization. Their characters are nothing more than props in the investigation.
Despite these minimal flaws, Chup stands out due to the themes it explores, albeit in a jumbled state.
It is natural for a filmmaker to feel disheartened on reading a scathing review. However, it is also important all types of reviews to exist. Otherwise, there will never be a standard for good cinema, filmmakers will be stuck in the land of mediocrity and no one will aspire for any better.
As a filmmaker and a film critic, someone who has seen both the blood and sweat that goes into the simplest details in a scene and someone who has watched countless films forming strong opinions on them, this divide is something I have witnessed myself. This is a battle I am constantly fighting within. That is why Chup resonates so deeply with me. It is a confused film, one which mirrors my constant confusion between the two worlds. Chup is the product of an artist and a critic, one that cannot differentiate between the two. That’s why the messaging of Chup is so muddled. Because on one hand it puts out valid points in the defense of film criticism and on the other hand romanticizes the life of an artist engulfed by the world of cinema and pained by the words of critics.
Through its confused state, it is not clear whether Chup has a defined message. The struggle between art and criticism will continue to remain. But somewhere in the midst of all the craziness, there is a sense of peace. A calm that sets in only on the union of the critic and the artist. Chup is at its best when the two are together, making their monotonous moments come to life with their common passion for cinema. And that may be the message that the filmmakers strive to convey. That just like Chup reaches its highest peak through the bonding of the critic and the artist, cinema will reach greater heights through a combined effort. Both the critic and the artist are necessary to make great cinema, and neither works without the other.

Big B played all instruments for Chup — Bloom Times
Tumblr media
Amitabh Bachchan, who turned music composer for the first time in his career for R Balki’s film Chup: Revenge of the Artist, has opened up about his composition. The actor revealed that he alone has played all the instruments in the composition, and has also recorded it personally, alone. He also shared that the song speaks of unrequited love as he penned a note about it.
The veteran actor shared the note on his Facebook account and his Tumblr blog. He also shared a recording of his composition being played at the end of Chup, with the credits reading, “110 years of Indian cinema. 80 years of Amitabh Bachchan. Thank You Amit Ji…The title music at the end has been specially composed by Amitabh Bachchan.”
Sharing the note, the veteran actor wrote, “A composition of ‘moi’ after an inspiring moment from film .. Each instrument played by ‘moi’ .. and recorded personally .. alone.”
Talking about the melody, Amitabh Bachchan said the song speaks of the pain of unrequited love and separation. He started, “To me it was the melody, that spoke…spoke of love…of unrequited love…love that is not openly reciprocated or understood…by beloved…beloved be not aware of admirer’s deep, pure affection, or consciously reject it…what then the melody — if it can be called that .. melodies that are singular strains of expression…but an expression of what…happiness or disillusionment it played for the maker.”
R Balki had previously shared the story of how Amitabh Bachchan turned music composer with his film Chup. The filmmaker told ETimes, “After seeing (Chup), he called me over and he played me a tune on his piano and said that’s what the movie and the characters made him feel. I asked him if I could use the tune and he immediately gifted it to the movie.”

DAY 5675
Jalsa , Mumbai Aug 31/Sept 1, 2023 Thu/Fri 12:48 AM
Catching up a little late but the intention is not to prove immediacy but consistency .. life endures consistency , may be not always intention .. intentions are good if they materialise .. what if they don't are they garbaged .. no .. they have a maintain that is valuable too .. and that deserves respect and value ..
Consistency garners results at some point of time .. hopefully .. or maybe the same results all the time .. so what is wrong with that .. nothing .. life vacillates , as is well know .. and intent and consistency vacillate too .. we decide which to step on ..
I have decided ..
And I am not going to tell you ..😜
What I am proud as anything to tell you of is a review sent by a formal film reviewer ..
Mr Amitabh Bachchan, for the 1st time in your career.,your supremacy of being the number one actor in the universe has been challenged.
And you have been challenged by non other but by your son Abhishek Bachchan who has proved to be the able heir to your acting lineage.
He is the only competitor you have and now with Ghoomer he has emerged ahead of all his colleagues. one of the best cinematic masterpiece in recent times is Ghoomer
Balki has outdone himself with a great nuanced script and direction. Sayami Kher & Shabana Azmi the 2 ladies are just effortless and a special mention for Vishal Sinha, the cinematographer for capturing the delicate nuances of Balki's script and Cinematic Vision with a Great panache…. Abhishek Bachchan what a performance, you have hit it out of the park. This one is for all those people who wrote off Abhishek, he is shining the brightest in the colossal of stars in the universe. Watch Ghoomer to see how the heir apparent usurps the mantle from his own father
it is the moment a Father waits to hear from the outside World .. for me internally I have believed this always , but to see it getting endorsed from the outside world is the pride of a Father ..
there is another voice message that needs to be heard .. I am tryong to put iot up .. till then just revel, as I am in the accolades for GHOOMER and its cast and making ..
but for today some pictures at KBC

need to rest now .. its past sleeping time for the work load tomorrow .. so we say time to be rested .. and 😴
Love and more for the Ef family .. and the gratefulness for all the rakhi greetings which I could not acknowledge .. 🙏

Scenes from David Lynch’s unaired 1994 “re-imagining” of PERFECT STRANGERS. Derided as “incoherent” by ABC President Ted Harbert, the 3 hour pilot swapped its two lead roles from scene to scene without warning or acknowledgement, often seeming to imply that “Cousin Larry” existed only in Balki’s mind; a manifestation of his disillusion with the facade of the American dream.
The most contentious aspects of the production were long, disturbing, mostly dialogue-free dream sequences examining Balki's fears and insecurities about his new identity as a Myposian-American immigrant. Many test screening participants walked out during the pilot's 3+ hour runtime.
ABC execs quickly and quietly shelved the project before it was announced, and refocused their scripted series development on “family-friendly” content. Lynch, a longtime PERFECT STRANGERS enthusiast, was devastated and furious at what he called a “betrayal” on the part of the network. He would go on to channel his feelings about the ordeal into a dark neo-noir horror film, 1997’s LOST HIGHWAY.

478. 93 things about 1993, part 2
Tumblr media
(part 1)
Tumblr media
7. The Buffalo Bills lose their third Super Bowl in a row.
Tumblr media
8. The Red Shoes loses $8 million on broadway (12/19)
I don't know much about Broadway shows, but I tried watching some clips from what I'm guessing was the press reel? and (this is just me) the performances looked so stiff. I got straight up Balki vibes from George de La Pena.
The day the reviews were published, box-office sales dwindled to $20,000, Mr. Starger said, a death knell for a show that cost more than $400,000 a week to run. It might have lost $200,000 to $300,000, he said, if he had kept it open another week and invited the Tony voters, fulfilling the award requirements, and it would have taken an infusion of $1.5 million to allow the show to run through January, thus giving it a chance, however slim, to go on. He decided not to take it.

9. The Mega Mac (April)
Anybody else think it wasn't a coincidence that McDonalds tested this large burger in Washington D.C. -- where former McDonalds lover President Bill Clinton had just moved to? Were they trolling ol Bill?
That burger doesn't even look that big now.

10. People killed while copying The Program (October)
Michael A. Shingledecker Jr., 18, of Polk, Pa., was killed almost instantly about 1 A.M. Saturday when he and a friend were struck by a pickup truck while lying on a two-lane highway in Polk, a small borough in western Pennsylvania. His friend, Dean G. Bartlett, 17, was critically injured. And Michael Macias, 17, of Syosset, L.I., was critically injured when he was hit by a car at 10:40 P.M. Saturday as he lay in the middle of Bayville Avenue in Bayville.
Law-enforcement authorities and family members said the teen-agers were apparently copying the daredevil stunt from "The Program," in which the college football hero shows how tough he is by lying down in the middle of a busy highway as cars and trucks whiz by in the dark. There are fears that scores of other young men are copying the stunt. 2
A few days later:
The Walt Disney Company said today that it would delete a scene in its new movie "The Program" after one teen-ager was killed and two others critically injured while apparently imitating the scene.
The brief sequence near the film's start involves several drunken college football players lying in the middle of a busy road to prove their toughness. The scene will be removed by Friday, Disney said today, and the film's coming attractions trailer will be pulled.
[...]
"While the scene in the movie in no way advocates this irresponsible activity, it is impossible for us to ignore that someone may have recklessly chosen to imitate it," the film's writer and director, David Ward, said in a statement released along with Touchstone Pictures, the division of Disney that released the film. "In light of the incidents reported, we are deleting the scene from the movie."
The movie is playing in about 1,220 theaters and was the nation's 12th-most popular release last weekend. 3

11. Major advertisers turn their back on NYPD Blue
So, remember when NYPD Blue premiered and there was a huge controversy on how violent and graphic it was
...
Tumblr media
and how Dennis Franz showed his butt in the shower or something? (source)
Some ABC stations wouldn't air it, (including my local ABC station which is something I didn't know until just now! 4) Major advertisers refused to buy commercial time during the show:
And while each episode of the series has been fully sponsored, at prices averaging around $115,000 for a 30-second spot, almost all the commercials so far were bought by marketers of over-the-counter drugs and film distributors, which are far less susceptible to complaints over program content, because they are much more interested in quick mass-market impressions.
Many spots are for products that are far from household names: Permathene-12 diet aid, Wash 'n Curl shampoo, Cortizone-10 anti-itch cream. But those advertisers on the show seem satisfied. 5
I found a commercial break, and sure enough it felt more like a day time talk show commercial break instead of one for a major television program. I know people don't really pay attention to commercial breaks, but you could really tell a difference.

Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies Returns from Pandemic Hiatus
- Denmark 4/17/72 finds band not blowing a big gig
Infamous for choking on the biggest stages, the Grateful Dead nevertheless stepped up for their first major television broadcast and Denmark’s inaugural televised concert.
It took place April 17, 1972, and the captured-on-video portions of the performance - 90 minutes; 13 songs - show the band in playful, yet serious, form.
The never-seen-in-America gig screened Nov. 1 in select cinemas as Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies returned for the first time since 2019. In a pre-recorded greeting, band archivist David Lemieux said it should continue as an annual event for the foreseeable future.
On the playful side, the musicians don their famous Europe ’72 Bozo masks during “Big Railroad Blues,” though Jerry Garcia doffs his before digging into a searing solo. Bob Weir acknowledges the cameras with goofy faces. And bassist Phil Lesh leads the guitarists in a round of on-mic gibberish in complaining about balky monitors.
Then there’s the music; sweet, serious music.
Pigpen, on his final tour with the band, comes front and center armed with his harp for a lowdown “It Hurts Me Too,” with Garcia on slide, and “Next Time You See Me.” He remains seated behind his organ, with a Steal Your Face logo draped over the front, for the rollicking “Chinatown Shuffle;” taken together, these performances make the viewer wonder how the Dead’s long, strange trip might have unfolded if the man born Ron McKernan hadn’t died at 27.
Pigpen brought the blues. Weir took them to the country, offering Marty Robbins’ “El Paso,” highlighted by Garcia’s constant scribbling, and Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee” to the Danish fans.
In the band less than a year, pianist Keith Godchaux already sounds like he’d been there forever. His wife, background singer Donna Jean Godchaux - who’d just joined - doesn’t appear in the film.
The Dead used this TV appearance to play the first “He’s Gone” - it’s fast with no vocal coda - and early versions of never-recorded-in-studio tracks such as “Ramble on Rose” and “Jack Straw;” the latter sung entirely by Weir at this stage of its development.
Though they would overdub harmony vocals for the resultant Europe ’72 album, the Dead - specifically Garcia, Weir and Lesh - sing pretty well on this evening.
And when it’s time to rock ‘n’ roll, Weir brings that, too, with a purposeful version of “Truckin’” - replete with muffed vocals - and a screaming “One More Saturday Night,” which finds entourage member Rosie McGee dancing onstage as if no one was watching.
Of course, the young hippies of Denmark were turned on, tuned in and watching. And you can, too; the two-nights-only event returns to select theaters Nov. 5.
There’s nothing like a Grateful Dead Meetup at the Movies.

CHUP!
What a film! No, I am not a film critic but I am a huge movie fan, a movie buff and this is totally my personal take on the film. The film has so many layers added to it, be it from Kaagaz Ke Phool to literally Kaagaz Ke Phool. The fact that critics/audiences always search for something new, so even if a film fails in its time, that film can now become a Mega Blockbuster if any major relevant incident occurs around it and that is a fact. The same is put together by Balki Sir and what beautiful direction and writing. The star of this film is "The STORY". Yes, the film is about a psychopath but at the end people will get attached to him. Now coming to the acting skills. I took my Mom to the theaters with me, her exact words after watching Dulquer was "Is he acting?"
Yes, exactly you would feel that he is not Dulquer, he is Danny. He was just being. I am out of words to describe how much his acting amazed me that even after coming out of the theatres me and my Mum were just talking about him and Shreya. Kudos to her for choosing this as her first film.
As a movie lover, if any of the producer/writer/director is reading this article, a humble request to you all. Please create this type of movies where the story is so fascinating that it automatically lifts everyone's performance.
Thank you for CHUP!

Lust Stories 2: All Films Ranked
July 9, 2023
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
1. The Mirror
Tumblr media
The film begins with a wide shot of a city. Towering apartments, surrounded by sprawling slums. Progress, countered by underdevelopment. This starting frame is just one example of the brilliant visual imagery that director Konkona Sen Sharma uses to set the stage for the complex relationship that develops between a woman and her maid. The Mirror is about a woman who walks in on her maid having sex in her bedroom. Lust and desire take over as she finds herself turned on by this spectacle prompting her to establish a pattern of secretly watching her maid’s sexual endeavors. This film is about much more than just lust. It is about two women who discover a new side to their sexuality that transcends class and caste. It is as much about the difference between them as it is about the common ground they find through this surreptitious activity. The themes are relevant. The writing, direction, and cinematography, are immaculate. And combined with the amazing performances by Amruta Subhash and Tillotama Shome, this short film becomes the best part of the anthology.
2. Tilchatta
Tumblr media
A woman in an abusive marriage aspires for a better future for her son as she struggles to escape her terrible fate. Directed by Amit Sharma of Badhaai Ho fame, this film is a tragic tale of manipulation, violence, and revenge, with lust at the center of it all. The best aspect of this film is the ominous atmosphere. The spacious haveli, its unspoken secrets, the many characters, and their dubious intentions. But in the process of building atmosphere, at times the plot suffers. The initial idea and the buildup are executed well, but the relevance of the conclusion is unclear. It is a depressing end to an already depressing story and serves little purpose beyond shock. However, despite the twisted ending, Tilchatta is impactful and serves as a great closure to the anthology.
3. Sex with the Ex
Tumblr media
It is no surprise that this segment is directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Known for films like Kahaani, Badla, and Ahalya, Ghosh’s filmography is mainly comprised of films of a similar suspenseful genre. However, this horror thriller disguised as a lust story is the biggest misfit in this anthology. The story follows a man who encounters his ex after being stranded in a village due to a car accident. While lust is clearly a pertinent part of the film leading to a shocking climax, it is unfortunately hidden by other aspects of the film. The story is too absorbed in its mystery and suspense that lust barely makes an impact. It also does not help that the artificial background visuals, while purposeful, are extremely jarring. But despite the flaws and predictability, the plot development is intriguing. While not a perfect film, it kept my interest alive and is definitely worth a one time watch.
4. Made for Each Other
Tumblr media
The weakest film of the lot is R Balki’s Made for Each Other which ironically starts the 2 hour long journey. What should have been an explosive beginning is instead a futile, ill-executed drama about a to-be married couple and their forays with ‘sex’ prior to their wedding. The concept itself, with its emphasis on the importance of sex in marriage, is interesting. However, there is no development of the plot, no arc to the characters, and an overall absence of conflict in the story. It remains bland and stagnant throughout. On top of that, the idea of an extremely progressive “Dadi” and her comical conversations with her granddaughter on sex, seems contrived and unrealistic. The advice that this short brings forth is useful, but unfortunately not impactful due to the lack of depth and conflict. It’s thirty minutes of time passing, nothing happening. And at the end of it all, I found myself asking, what was the point?
As with any anthology film, Lust Stories 2 has its ups and downs. Some parts are so well-made I desire to revisit them and others so insignificant they are best forgotten. But it maintains a balance, and ultimately is a worthwhile watch.
