The start of something new
Yesterday, I finally graduated from nursing school. 3 and a half year of sweat and tears, finally came to an end. I don’t think it has really hit me just yet, even though I had two weeks after the last exam. It just doesn’t feel real, probably won’t until I start my job in August.  I’m so nervous to start, I have been out to several different departmens and sections, as internship given by the school, so it’s not like I don’t have any experience, plus I’m gonna work at the same department where I have been a student for a year.  Still, I’m nervous for all the new responsibility I will get.  Which is why I wanna start this blog. I’m gonna blog my experience from the first day of introductions till I feel like I’m finally a nurse.  I don’t know how long that will take.  Feel free to follow my journey,

So I got a crappy grade back on an assignment. An assignment I thought I did pretty well on- but some profs are hard markers, idk if I missed a verbal instruction somewhere due to my hearing impairment, but I definitely misread a written one and it lost me like 7 marks - for misreading that one. . . It happens, but now I know what to expect from that prof and the only@place I can go from here is up! So more effort in class, knock quizzes out of the park! And kill this next assignment! Plus go to some office hours to make sure I’m understanding content! . . Online definitely makes some things more difficult- especially with being HoH/deaf but in the end the only person responsible for myself is me. . . #workharder #failed #nurse #nursingstudent #studentnurse #nursetobe #nurseingthemaking #nurblr #nurses #rn #rpn #rntobe #undergradnursing #ltcnurse #nightnurse #geriatricsnurse #newbienurse #babynurse #nightshift #nightnurse #lpn #lvn #cna #psw #bscn #bsn #adn #bscntobe #bsntobe #nurselife https://www.instagram.com/p/CHNd_8phiGw/?igshid=10ih8lk3ja6xc

Simulation Lab
Alright so I have mentioned my online simulation labs like three or four times now and I think it’s deserving of its own post.
Due to Miss Rona the Hospitals have restricted the people in them to only essential personnel, even patients are not allowed to have family visitors unless it’s a spouse. I was supposed to complete 72 hours of clinicals in the women’s correctional facility and I was PUMPED, but pandemic before education. so we got dinged with these online lab simulations. When we actually go back to school we will have an INTENSIVE crash course for skills (catheters, IV’s aseptic wound care, etc.) this gives me hope that i wont be completely incompetent...
Okay so the actual simulations.
We are using a program called vSim for nursing. Not gonna lie this thing is kinda creepy looking. I mean look at it!!!
Tumblr media
TELL ME THAT IS NOT A LITTLE CREEPY.
Anyways this is kinda cool cause you open the simulation and it immediately gives you the patient chart, including information, orders, diagnostics etc.
Tumblr media
After you are done looking through the chart you have specific actions be it communication, interventions, drug administration etc. that you can pick and choose from.
When you’re satisfied with the care that you have provided you click on the option to hand the patient off to another health care provider.
Then comes the nerve racking loading sign for a good 10 seconds as it calculates your grade for the care you provided to the patient.
Tumblr media
The program will then show you every single action that you did.
Which ones you did well, which ones you did wrong or were missing. Anything that was unneeded is also indicated.
Based on all your actions it gives you a grade.
I KID YOU NOT I almost killed my patient the first time I did a simulation. It was BAAAAADDDD, I think the percentage grade I got was like a 26. Another time I gave oral drugs to an NPO (nothing by mouth) patient because I misread the log and the CHOKED. Sis lemme tell you I choked too... I was so ashamed and frustrated. My anxiety! she was not helping the situation either
Tumblr media
But you know what? this is my first time. I’ve never even had a real patient. These simulations were my first ones. To do it perfect the first time having had practically no teaching, no preceptor, not help at all is insane and I needed to chill the hell out.
My professors have hijacked the schools mail and decided to mail us sterile gloves, wound kits, and scrub kits. she wants us to practice the things we can from home.
We all dislike the situation but we are just rolling with the punches.

New Beginnings
So, i’ve started my new job, my “career” technically, ya girl is a RN. i have mixed feelings about being one, i don’t think i’m suited for the job honestly. As my...blog? states, i’m a shy, awkward, quiet little human that prefers to stay inside her room and never leave, except for showers and food. I haven’t started on the floor yet, that’s unfortunately this upcoming Tuesday, and i’m really not prepared for it. I thought i would love being a nurse, i mean i love the medical field, i love science, even during class i get excited looking at cases and learning medical procedures and diseases, but....when it comes to practice, it’s just so overwhelming. I have talked to many ppl, and have been told by many professors, speakers, other nurses, even textbooks, that the first year of nursing your just going around like a headless chicken and have no idea what you’re doing. Even a few years into your career, you still have no idea what you’re doing sometimes. And while that’s definitely a part of what i’m feeling, i have no social skills to booster myself with.
I feel incompetent, and unsafe to work as a nurse, and i wonder is that my inexperience in the field couples with my social anxiety? Or is it a legitimate concern? I guess it’s something i will find out over the course of the next three months during my residency.
Leaving one last note, when i finally found out my schedule and they told me that i start on the floor in less that 4 days, i actually almost called them and quit, but then i remembered that i’d have to pay a penalty for breaking my two year contract with the hospital, and my bank account is in the single digits.
Yay me :)

Team Work..
Since going from student to registered nurse the one thing that I have found the hardest to deal with is the “team work” or lack of. I’m not sure if any of you have struggled with the same thing.
I know nursing is hard and we are constantly run off our feet but currently I’m finding the negative attitudes of other staff the biggest struggle that I have faced in the past 3 months! It’s so difficult to maintain a positive attitude and professionalism when being surrounded by such a negative attitude...
Any tips?
