AWTWB Fan Illustrated Edition!!

Heyo! I’m back! With the final (for now) instalment of my makeshift illustrated editions. This one is for the third and my personal favorite book in the Simon Snow Series, Any Way the Wind Blow by the amazing @rainbowrowell!!

Just like last time if you’re tagged, your art is in it!

This is essentially me putting the art pieces to the lines in the book to show the beautiful words and the beautiful art at once.

DISCLAIMER!!! This time, I managed to find out my local library allows me to print pages of colored documents for only 10 cents (woot woot) so the image quality is much better. HOWEVER, if you don’t see an art piece you believe should be on there or have seen before or even made, it is not because I don’t like the art or artist, it’s because I simply missed it when finding art or forgot to put it on a page to print.

This was by far the hardest one to complete, it took a total of 6 and a half months to complete. Two months to find all the art, 3 to glue it all in, 1 month taking photos and labeling, and a half month putting it all in collages and creating the artist credits.

AND IT WAS WORTH IT!! it looks great and it’s amazing to see all the art next to their source material.

Six Sentences Sunday (except is an art process)

Well, hello there, beautiful creatures! :D thank you so much for the wonderful tags!!! they mean a lot for meeee!! I haven't posted in a bit, doing a master is a bit stressful. But! I'm always lurking around and seeing as much as I can the amazing things you all are creating!! As you might know, I'm right now doing lots of fan work for my amazing and beautiful friends @confused-bi-queer and @hushed-chorus, which stories are very close to my heart <3

This time, I would like to share my art process. It is a contrast between the traditional art, and the digital one. Each process is different with each person. When you want to represent something someone else created, it is important to get as many insights and feedback from them, and know the source material. Previous: The Talk ™ First and foremost, you need to talk with the author. Maybe if you are doing fanart, is not that needed. But when you are doing a collab, it is important to be in the same channel as the author, and have a brainstorming about the ideas, vision or insights they might have. Contrasting ideas, situations, deciding which illustrations are more viable, scheduling the releasing, etc. all those topics are important! Feel free to suggest creative adjustments, might or might not work for the author, but is worth the shot. A creative idea is never a wasted one ;) once you have decided, then is time for: 1. Sketching

The sketching part is very important! You layout your scene for the first time! start deciding where light and dark will be, the color palette, the feeling you want to evoke, and work with the expressions the characters will have. It doesn't need to be perfect to be a good sketch! It needs to evoke the idea! This stage is the same in both traditional and digital, at least for me. I always start on paper :) I show my sketches to the author, and we fangirl together ;) then (after maybe some adjustments, maybe a whole new sketch) they approve the idea! Is time for: 2. Lineart

Lineart is different for traditional and digital, but not really. For traditional, I first decide which kind of medium I will use. This will be crucial for the materials I will procure myself with. This time I went for watercolor with a bit of mixed media, so I needed a paper strong enough for the watercolor to behave. Then, I chose the liners, which are waterproof and light fast. I line with 0.5, 1.0, 4.0 and some edged broader pens meant for calligraphy. In digital, I work with a Wacom bamboo and Photoshop, and I use some hard brushes with pressure sensitiveness activated. You can customize your brushes, or use packs available on the internet. The wonders of digital are that you can make as many mistakes as you want, and you can always go back. I usually paint my lineart in the darkest shade I will use in the whole illustration, but never black. When you are happy with your lineart, then is time for:

3. Colours!!

The fun part! The one I enjoy (and suffer) the most!! Color. I love painting, but both traditional and digital can be as demanding as you wish! In traditional, you have to be more careful with the mediums. Watercolor is such a wonderful and nightmare way of expression, because you can't really control it. You have to be ok not being in that control, understand how it behaves, and work fast. I always end up adding acrylics for color enhancing, lights, and specific details I want to represent. Let your work rest, I can have a finished piece in two hours, or in three days. In digital, unhinge. Unhinge my child, have fun! You can correct, filter, move values and start again as much as you want!! There are so many brushes, so many filters, so many textures, the whole color palette light allows! Have fun! But two important things I always do: make a folder for each character. Don't be me some years ago, when I used to paint everything in a single layer, or not name any of them. Order is important when you want to correct things. Also, I encourage you to limit your color palette, this way the whole illustration makes sense. I always do something I call 'The ambience layer', where I put a layer over the lineart and everything, and I add lights, shadows, textures, etc. not specific of any object but of the whole scene. And I always add filters and color correction and tweak the values here and there. Great! Now you have a: 4. Finished piece

You have finally finished! Make sure you sign your pieces, and you give them digital treatment if you are going to publish them on the internet. Always work with RGB values, and export for web :) always send your advances to your authors, and send the finished piece via e-mail, so it doesn't lose quality. - - - - - - So yeah, this is basically the whole process :D soon I will share a different process with different versions of the art involved. I really dont know if this #barbietrend is dead or not, but I really wanted to do it to represent the LGBTT+ characters of @rainbowrowell of the simon snow trilogy according of course, to pesonal perception so here goes

I think that in order to talk about this relationship I better start with the individuals.

I really dont have much to talk about Niamh Brody since I really read her parts faster (because I needed closure to the SimonxBaz drama). However, it did change my perspective about Agatha. Like many in CO I reaaaaally didn't like her because of her attitude towards, well everything and everyone, but by the end of AWTB and after some characters analysis by @sailorblossoms I read I think I understood her better.

In a sense, I think she and Simon are kind of parellelisms, they both live by the expectations of their guardians, Simon by being the hero,the ideal soldier boy and Agatha by being the heroe's girlfriend, the eternal damsel in distress and the biggest difference between them and their break point is the fact that Agatha realises this, thinks about it and then she tries to fight it (by trying to be out of the adventures, by being with the villian, to let the adults handle it), to run away from it, from all of it. While Simon is reluctant to even think of these because he knows that deep down everything he has is very fragile and temporary and that to question it may put all this in even more risk to lose it, to lose himself in doubt.

So by the same parallelism Niamh means to Agatha these out of the scipt, out of the box character, someone that is not at all how she expected, but at the same time someone she is able to easily relate to, and also through her Agatha discovers another point of view of the magic world she is been trying to run away from (taking care of the magical goats)

Get to know me (and you)

Thank you @windsweptinred for tagging me! I am sorry it took me so long to get to this.

1. 3 ships I really like right now: Ohhh this is always tough for me. I have so many ships at all times. Ok well if we're going by my current brain rot...

Dreamling: No one is surprised by this. They caught me by the throat and have not let go for the last year. It's so funny coming in as someone who was familiar with the comics before the Netflix adaptation, because they are not at all romantic. Like, I got no romantic vibes from them (and I'm someone who sees romance vibes in everything). The MOST romance I can see MAYYYYYBE (and this is a massive maybe because I only read this arc after the show aired and I was already getting into Dreamling) happens in The Wake (and I won't go into further details because those are massive spoilers). Why do I like Dreamling? They're just so feral for each other in fanon. Plus it helps that the actors on the show had incredible chemistry with each other (I would also consider HellDream and DreamMuse as other potentials because yeah he looked like he was about to make out with those two actresses).

SnowBaz: I still have so much love for SnowBaz. This was the pair that got me through a massive depression/writing slump. Seriously guys, read Wayward Son and Any Way The Wind Blows if you want an accurate representation about depression and intimacy problems and just finding yourself once that biggest event of your life is over. It's about learning to live after trauma and how to heal. Plus this was also the first CANON queer couple I read and helped me to become comfortable with my own queer identity. Yeah... I may move on and have other loves, but Simon and Baz will always hold an irreplaceable part of my heart.

Tie between Ineffable Husbands and BlackBonnet: These are two very new relationships and I just love them both so much. I don't know much about BlackBonnet, because I've only seen gifs of the second season and nothing more, but from what I've seen, omg I am so excited. As for Ineffable Husbands, they are SO interesting to me and I have been enjoying reading the Metas that have been coming out after the second season. It's so interesting to me, to connect this to SnowBaz, to see the reactions after the second season aired. It reminds me A LOT of the explosion that occurred after Wayward Son was released (an explosion that not only continued the closer we got to AWTWB being released, but also contributed to Rainbow Rowell leaving Twitter). I'm not going to get too deep into this (though @carryonsimoncarryonbaz has been trying to convince to write a meta comparing the two because MY GOD ARE THERE SO MANY CONNECTIONS).

2. First ever ship: Honestly? Sailor Mercury/That boyfriend she had... what was his name? Greg? I thought they were so flipping cute. Plus I liked that the nerdy girl had someone who thought she was cute. As the Nerdy Girl myself, it made me happy to see.

3. Last song:

Fegari - Natasa Theodoridou: One of my favourite Greek songs. I've been in a Greek music mood as of late, and this is a beautiful song. It's about a woman who prays to the moon to bring her husband back from his mistress, and to watch over him if she can't. She also asks the moon to take her from the Earth so that she may see her husband from above.

At least... that's what my husband tells me. Greek music is so morose you guys.

4. Last movie: I watched Barbie last week with my husband. We both loved it so much. It's such a great dark comedy.

5. Currently reading: Lots of fanfiction, but I recently bought a beautiful Jane Austen collection, as well as an illustrated collection of poems by Rumi, so I want to dive into those.

6. Currently watching: My husband on the couch. But in all seriousness, we're probably going to watch either Our Flag Means Death or Silo next.

7. Currently eating: Nothing, but I am craving some cereal.

8. Currently craving: xD Cereal.

Meta time Or give me crumbs and I WILL find Lore

So what I see here is a thread that is continuing from AWTWB. When Baz visits Oxford in AWTWB his father allegedly tried to set him up with a girl. Then when he stays with them he has no room of his own he has to stay on the couch. Recall his old room in Hampshire where he had to treat his room like a museum. (If I were Daphne and I had to live in my husband's late wife's house and Simon destroyed its magical atmosphere and forced us to move I'd send him flowers but that's just me). What sticks out to me is Baz saying that the home in Oxford is not haunted. He means this literally but it can be taken as metaphorically too. It's not filled with traditions and expectations like Hampshire was.

Remember that he even comments on how the little ones are allowed to get away with more relaxed behavior than he did growing up. When Mordelia screams for her father when Daphne comes home.

Also look at the official illustration and compare it to the Xmas dinner Simon describes in CO. Last time Simon was there he descibes it as formal, boring, tense and everyone was dressed in formal wear. In this illustration the kids are yelling, Mordelias on her phone, Simon's got his wings out, Baz has his elbows on the table and is dressed in cozy attire.

One other thing. Daphne mentions that they could convert one of the barns to make it a guest house for Baz and Simon. First unlike Hampshire they can redecorate and alter the house into a functional home instead of a museum. Second: they are making room for Baz and Simon, literally but also metaphorically.

I think Baz referring to Simon as his friend harkens to the conversation he and Daphne had in AWTWB when she first brought up the idea of him staying, but it's also Baz still not used to this new side of his family. But perhaps he will be when he and Simon visit for Xmas.

Anyway just some thoughts.

I wasn’t sure I’d have anything to share today, because I’ve been SO busy and tired and nothing I make is turning out any fucking good, but I realize we’re apparently celebrating AWTWB’s one year anniversary and I actually do have a WIP I haven’t touched since basically when I joined the fandom.  I couldn’t quite get it to work so it was essentially abandoned, but I figured, hey, I’ve got their designs pinned down a lot more now and I bet I could do something here.

So I did.  Polished it up, redrew the faces.  Something.  It’s not an exact illustration, it’s not meant to be a literal interpretation of the scene, but this was heavily inspired by chapter 16 of AWTWB, specifically when Baz closes the door between him and Simon.

Anyway here I am, coming in hot with the Sad Shit.  You’re welcome!  Do you expect anything else from me at this point?

Also, I do have one unfinished illustration from The Mirrors that Hold Us Chapter 5.  It was scrapped because it was ... really just not needed and I thought it might be too fucking dark for no good reason.  I like angst, but I do try to be purposeful about it.  I’ve hidden this image and additional tags beneath the cut. 

Yeep!  Simon Snow dies in the White Chapel.  I also forgot he was wearing a suit in this scene so we just made shit up friends.  We made it up.  I don’t think I’ll ever finish this, but its not bad.  I do like the way the drawing turned out, but you know.  It makes me unreasonably sad.

Everything I Know About 'Snow for Christmas'

So, Scattered Showers comes out Nov 8 and the first thing I'm going to do when I can read it is read "Snow for Christmas".

I just finished my re-read for the Simon Snow trilogy and Simon and Baz have completely taken over my brain, I don't think I can manage to read anything that isn't them. If I knew things would be this bad I would have timed my re-read to end just before Nov 8 or maybe even a little bit after, just so my brain would give me a break. Because now all I want to do is read "Snow for Christmas".

So, I'm compiling this little list of everything I know about the story to help calm down my mania.

We know the story is 30 pages long because Rainbow Rowell actually posted the table of contents for this book on her Instagram.

Every short story in this book is introduced with an illustration and this is the one for Snow for Christmas.

And, lastly, we have the sneak peek Rainbow Rowell gave us of the story itself.

Then we have a tweet from Rainbow herself telling us this -

Wild Speculation below!

Ever since I read that tweet the illustration has started to make more and more sense because it's clear they are celebrating Christmas with Baz's family as that is clearly Swithin in the illustration so the others are Baz's sisters and his parents. But the thing I can't get over is that the last Christmas Simon spent with Baz's family was a very disastrous one following which they had to move from Hampshire because Simon ripped a hole in the magickal firmament right around their house. I mean it's brought up so many times in AWTWB that Baz clearly has no idea how his father would react if he brought Snow home considering what happened the last time he was there. But yet here we are, which means this is a big deal at least it feels that way.

Of course, there is the other side of the coin - they are aged up but the real question is how many years, exactly how far is this story set from the end of AWTWB which if you count the epilogue was itself set a year later.

Kill me but I'm expecting something very romantic. Now, I'm going to go back to counting down the days till I will have this read!

I have 10 fics so I guess I’m recommending half of them 😂 . Which means none of these will be surprising because I’m sure you’ve all heard me talk them to death by now.

1. Slings And Eros (M, 95k and counting)

I couldn’t make this list without this fic. It’s a beast, but it’s my baby. It’s my longest by a wide margin, which probably feels intimidating to potential readers, but I still hope people give it a chance because I just feel all kinds of ways about this one. It’s on the surface an Eros and Psyche Greek myth au but it’s also barely that at all and does not require knowledge of the original or of mythology. It follows star-crossed god Simon and human Baz as they work with Penelope to save Baz from the wrath of Simon’s father. In the midst of that, it explores prophecy, destiny, morality, accountability, identity, and all the ways we can love. And it also weaves in as many themes/characters from the books as possible ofc. I look forward to the day this one is complete and I can read it through and hopefully still love it.

2. A Man of Letters (T, 54k)

I’ve easily read this fic more than any other (mine or anyone else’s). It was so much fun using the unsent-letters-cum-diary format to construct the narrative and I think this ended up being a super successful way to write it. Baz gets to live that Beau Brummell life and Simon gets to play with swords. There is trauma, class anxiety, miscommunication, and oodles of romantic tension. Also! Lady Ruth! Who, I dare say I did a pretty bang up job of characterizing pre-awtwb. (You didn’t hear it from me, but Lady Ruth may do a bit of Plotting™️ of her own...🤫 )

3. Chamber by Chamber (E, 19k)

My most kudosed fic now apparently. Maybe I should just rec the series it’s in. There are three fics that do all build together, but they can stand on their own, depending how deep you want to go. This fic was my way of having Simon and Baz finally fully accept the monstrous in themselves by giving that to each other, using Simon’s WS quote as a kind of outline. I termed it therapeutic smut, which is accurate, while also being very kinky—but look at who we’re dealing with. It was also an excuse for me to write all the tail sex. Fully (and very explicitly 😅) illustrated with a banging playlist.

4. I Can’t Believe He’s Not Butter (T, 5k)

Yes it’s crack, but I still really love this fic. Also, most of my fics are chaptered and 10k+ so this could offer some nice entry level commitment. Do you yearn for sensual scenes of butter spreading? An oversaturation of saucy puns about sauces? Poetic musings from the syrup caddy at table six? Have a need to see the only appropriate use of the word “nubbin”? This is the fic for you! I truly had no idea how much worldbuilding I was going to do for this one. Did I need to explore the interpersonal relationships and social/power dynamics of diner condiments? Well actually yes, yes I did. I hope pancake syrup!Baz and margarine!Simon are very happy together in their blue plate special life.

5. To the Manor Borne (T, 43k)

My COC entry from 2020, using each day’s prompt to write another chapter; the plot is intentionally loose at best, so the chapters are pretty standalone if you wanted to do this one in shorter installments. The ws-era gang spends the Christmas holidays at Pitch manor doing dead spot research, arts and crafts, caroling, canoodling, and introspection. Shepard teaches Baz, Penny, and Agatha how to tie their shoelaces the Normal way. Simon is back in therapy and trying to convince Baz to go to, too. Penny is doing work on her dad’s team. Agatha doesn’t know why she’s there, but she’ll figure it out. Snowbaz exchange gifts, have touching moments in the rain, go flying, and are just generally nauseatingly adorable.
