I was rewatching A:TLA, the “field trip” episodes specifically and literally Zuko and Katara are just so natural.

When Zuko and Aang saw the Sun Warriors they bickered like teens and didn’t want to do what the other wanted or were judging each other. While yes they learned a lot about each other and this was a foundation to their friendship it was a bumpy start.

Zuko and Sokka were awkward on their way to the boiling rock and still bumped heads. But it was great to see that Zuko respected Sokka and trusted his ideas and choices.

Katara and Zuko though, right away he had her back on everything. Sokka had already told her the story of their mom but he listened to Katara when she told him, he wanted to make sure she rested, he made sure to tell her they couldn’t bust in like she wanted but to be stealthy. Right away they had a plan and Zuko followed Katara’s lead and they didn’t bicker or bump heads.

They were effortless, they flowed, they knew what to do. Zuko had her back the whole time telling who they thought was Yon Rha that she was a force to be reckoned with and praised her saying there’s no way he could forget her. “You don’t remember her? You will soon, trust me.” (Which, lets talk about that for a second, means Zuko has thought about Katara after encounters with her previously)

Zuko watched her bloodbend and said nothing or question it. He pressed for more answers to get the information they needed. Zuko had Katara’s back 100%. Even if she killed Yon Rha Zuko would have defended her to the ends of the earth. He knew whether she did it or not was up to her and only her and he protected her and her right to make that decision.

Anyway I’m rambling lol my point is Zuko and Katara are natural and effortless with each other. He bumped heads with Sokka and Aang but it was effortless with Katara

What I hate is how people who hate on Korra say she was a regular kid and got a childhood when Aang didn't. Because they obviously did not watch either show.

Aang was 12 when Gyatso told him he's the avatar. For 12 years he was a kid. Aang had friends in the air nomads, the earth kingdom (Bumi) and in the fire nation. When we first see Aang he legit just wants to go penguin sledding because he's a kid.

Korra was 4 when she manifested being the avatar. Then she was locked in a training facility where she trained to be the avatar. Her only friends were Katara, the white lotus and Naga. She literally did not get any friends her age until she moved to republic city!!

Neither of these characters had a regular childhood. But Aang had more time to hang on to his thanks to Gyatso, Korra didn't.

I always love to see this scene, where Zuko meets his father for the first time after 3 years. Especially since we, as the viewer see him too for the first time. Also, how the Music plays in that scene is excellent and you really feel anxious with Zuko.

This is also why I prefer to write Azula over most characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender

Because writing Azula is harder than writing Zuko or Iroh or most of the other beloved fandom characters. We are talking a person who pulled a Lady Eboshi and shot down her setting's equivalent of capital G God at 14, who got nerfed because the writers wrote themselves in a corner. A character who is presented as one thing, does the exact opposite, and gets treated like she's Warsmith Honsou or Fabius Bile by overgrown children who have never seen an actual human child or had any actual contact with a person of the species Homo sapiens besides their mamas bringing chicken tenders the basement.

Writing a character who's powerful, smart, and seen only through the eyes of others requires more skill than writing Prince Burns Shit When He's Mad struggling through fixing the postwar Fire Nation (I actually really like that kind of story but I ain't wasting the braincells on Prince Chuck Tingle Turtleduck), General Obi Wan Kenobi with tea, or what have you.

Avatars, of course, are an equal or greater challenge and this is why the setting itself has to nerf them because they created a fighting series for kids with a character whose greatest potential is stuff the setting doesn't uh, really bother exploring.

Of course the other character who'd be an actual challenge for an interesting story is Toph, especially when she gets metalbending. Toph is an OP powerhouse who steamrolls pretty much everyone and would be likely to start trouble if there is none for shits and giggles.
