Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my top favourite comfort show. So I figured I’d try my hand at drawing them. 💨🌊🪨🔥
The north and south water tribes are based on Inuit culture so I thought it would be amazing to showcase their traditional tattoos. Designs/meanings vary from different communities of course, but typically chin/v forehead tattoos signify womenhood. So that’s what I’m going with 🤞🏼

just so we’re on the same page, if azula isn’t redeemed and at peace by the time the aang movie rolls around, she better have her own slice of life.
you mean 12 years post war, aang and katara get to be engaged/married, zuko could have a kid on the way for all we know, and azula will still be zuko’s scheming little sister?
i swear if she’s a villain and doesn’t finish dinner and tuck her children into bed before heading to her lair, i’ll be done with atla.

Okay, this take isn't going to be very Katara friendly. It's not hate but more like criticism towards the show and Katara as a fighter. If anyone doesn't appreciate negative criticism towards Katara (specifically during the last agni Kai) pls don't read this and if you do, pls DON'T start an argument with me about it. I'm willing to accept different opinions but I'm not down for an argument. That being said, let's get started:
Katara had extreme plot armor during The Last Agni Kai.
The first thing people think about when they hear this sentence is Zuko taking the lightning hit for her. This is a major plot armor point because she can't redirect lighting but Zuko can and so he happens to be able to catch it and redirect it at the last second and none of them dies.
Sure, the Avatar Studios managed to hide how this was plot armor by calling it part of Zuko's growth. Which is why this is not going to be the moment I'll address in this post. I'll be talking about a much less memorable moment that most of you would have forgotten due to the adrenaline of the whole fight bc even if a lot of people don't remember it, it's probably the greatest plot armor Katara even had in the show.
Tumblr media
In this post I'll be addressing the panel you see in the picture. After Zuko was down, Azula started attacking Katara, the only enemy left. She did her little spiny thingy and created lightning that she directed at Katara and Katara blocked the attack with water. Which makes absolutely no sence.
A similar thing happened in the crystal catacombs and there was nothing wrong with that moment. Wanna know why? Cause it was with water and fire. Not lightning.
Tumblr media
Katara send a huge wave at Azula and Azula hit back with fire. The outcome of that moment was for the fire to be put out and the water to be evaporated. Which makes sense because that's what happens with fire and water, they are opposite forces that destroy each other.
But the same thing couldn't have happened with lighting. After the Agni Kai when Katara and Azula fought and lightning and water met each other some of the water evaporated , the rest of it fell to the ground and the lighting just... Disappeared!
Realistically, the lightning should have traveled through the remaining water, find its way back to Katara and electrocute her. Lightning doesn't simply disappear, it's energy it can only change form, not disappeared. And it also travels through water without having any issues. Which is why this move wasn't very wise in Katara's part. And yet she's alive and unscratched.
The Avatar Studios literally defied physics to keep Katara from being electrocuted to death in order to protect both her and Zuko, who needed her healing abilities asap. If it weren't for plot armor, Katara would be dead. And I don't mean a series of events that could potentially lead to death later on, I mean actual, immediate, inevitable, potentially painful death. And she escaped that because the creators of the show fond physics insignificant. Now, that's plot armor.
I told you this wasn't gonna be hate. It's barely even Katara critical. It's mostly Avatar Studios critical. Also, while writing this I started getting insecure and now I think I might have talked about this before so if I have, pls excuse me being an idiot, I don't have good memory

Oh hey, updates on the ACTUAL Avatar stuff. The adult Gaang movie is apparently set for a theatrical release in October 2025, with the Korra sequel series (based apparently 100 years after her show, which I think means could imply them jumping to a cyberpunk influence, but we'll see) currently set to be coming out next year also.
We'll see if this actually bears fruit, I hope it does! Admittedly I've already seen backlash against the new live-action show morphing into a backlash against the show in general (as in, "the original show was bad too guys!" kind of reasoning), hoping that doesn't kill enthusiasm for the stuff made by the actual creators (now free from the original network intentionally sabotaging them).

Is anyone else apprehensive about Avatar Studios? Funny enough I'm not apprehensive about the live-action, because a) the casting and CGI are so good and when it's obvious they've put so much effort into it it's not going to be trash, I know it's not going to be good, but it's not going to be too bad either b) for some reason even if it's bad I'm like “I still have the OG cartoon” but—
Avatar Studios has me like, yes, I do want more content, especially Gaang as adults but also, they are going to muck it up, aren't they? And it's not going to be easy to ignore because it won't be a retelling.
I'm most afraid for Katara. I am of the opinion that Kataang had the potential to be a really good relationship that was unnecessarily rushed. It can be fixed in stories where they're adults. But I'm not holding out hope. I can SEE them reducing her to just a love-interest.

I love korra! I love the legend of korra so much!! There's so much i love about this show!!
I grew up with atla, i remember coming home from school when i was a kid and watching atla and i loved it and later on, in my late teens i rewatched atla, from start to finish and i actually absorbed everything and i loved it so much more, atla is damn near perfect of a story for me!
And then i watched lok for the first time and i loved it too! I love the expansion of the world, i love the expansion on the lore, i love seeing how the world changed and develop, i loved republic city, i love that the world didn't stop after atla and that republic city was a something that the characters of atla developed. I love how much lore we got in lok, i love knowing that the lion turtle that came out of nowhere in the finale of atla, is actually the reason why bending exists in the first place, i love wan and ravva so much! I loved finding out how the avatar came to be!
I love the villains of this show, they're so much more than just straight up power hungry villains! I know some people think that amon being a bloodbender undermine the oppression of non benders and even though I'd have loved seeing a high level non bender villain, i absolutely love the story with amon! The villains of lok are genuinely one of the best part of this show!
And i just love korra! I love her journey, her growth and seeing the way some people talk about her, just makes me love her even more!
Yes, season 2 is my least favorite, but it's still so good and so fun! Some people act like it's the worst thing in television and it's just crazy! These people are so fucking dramatic!!
Yes, lok has flaws, yes, it's not as "perfect" as atla, but it's so fucking good!! And now that I'm older, i prefer lok, because it is more mature and more complex and just very compelling.
There's probably one thing i disliked about lok and it's the love triangle from the first 2 seasons, and even then, i didn't hate it, i was just annoyed.. and you know what, I'm more than okay with having 2 seasons of annoying love triangle stuff because it lead to korrasami!! Even though they barely got any screen time and some people still try to deny their relationship, I'm so glad it exists, I'm glad that korrasami is not just some non canon ship that fans like, it's actually fucking real! The creators made it as canon as they could!
In conclusion: i love atla, i love lok, i love korra and i fucking love korrasami!!

Predictions for when the Avatar Studios movies comes out
people are gonna complain about the animation style (ala Studio Pierrot if you remember, IDK if Studio Mir is gonna be involved)
Zutara vs Kataang shipwar part 20.5
Zukka "crumbs" that Zukka shippers will chose to believe
^^^same with Zutara
fandom getting mad it ain't like the OG ATLA (Aaron Ehasz is not involved AFAIK)
fandom getting mad about adult Gaang's storyline (people wanted more post-ATLA content and when they got the comics they complained)
Toph's baby daddies
Kyoshi shipping war, probably (history will definitely repeat itself)
Korra getting nerfed, again!
Korra getting sidelined in her own movie LMAO (ala Bryke admitting they had a hard time including her in Book 4)
The Krew being nonexistent in "LOK" movie
something stupidly white
something stupidly straight
hetero-lens
Bad canon Korrasami where Korra gets thrown under the bus in order to put Asami on a pedestal
something stupidly homophobic in their attempts to make LGBT rep (see below)
VLD writers are working with Bryke again, so. Be prepared for that.

Let's talk about Avatar Studios
And what the hell is going on
1) I already talk about the risks of a new Avatar following up Korra so I won't go much further on this here. The problem is this new show already have to face 3 problems
1. Technology. Like, if it really will be 100 years after Korra, makes sense that the Technology will evolve a lot but more technology also means less mystic shit and the fandom love the mystic shit in the Avatar World.
Transform Avatar in some sfi looking show can be bite the ass of Bryke. A lot of fans already complain about Tlok modern world because there's less mystical stuff because of it, now imagine a Avatar where the technology evolve during 100 years.
2. Repetition. For the technology not evolve this much, something have to happen to the world, something that Korra wasn't able to prevent. So then we would have Roku - Aang arc all over again. The children of the Krew will be important to this new Avatar? It's tlok all over again. We will have modern sociological and political discussions? It's tlok all over again. We will have the classic hero journey, where he have to beat the bad guy at the end of the show? It's tla all over again
3. Characters. Tla characters are hella charismatic and the structure of their show help each one of them to develop. Tlok characters were able to sold themselves just with charisma since the storytelling structure of Tlok didn't allow the show to focus on each of them so their development is more off screen. The characters of the new show will have to match the charisma of the previous shows and not sound repetitive. I don't wanna look to a character and think to myself "oh, this is just like Katara". If they want to give us a new show, then give us truly new characters.
2) As a lesbian Poc I understand, respect and agree with the choice of bring more diversity to Avatar Studios but recast the cast is a wrong decision storytelling wise and c'mon...Dante did a stellar job as Zuko (just like the rest of the cast with their respective characters) so if he wasn't half asian he would get recast too? They were all also responsible to give life to your beloved characters, I wouldn't discard them like that.
Storytelling wise, each actor brings something new to a character, this can be good or bad. What if the interpretation of the new cast feels too different for the fandom to buy it? It's more than just a voice. Think about the Joker, James Bond, Superman....all have multiple actors playing the character and every actor brought something new with them, and because of that some are loved like Ledger and Daniel Craig and some are hated like Jared Leto.
Also, I don't want the new cast to just imitate the og cast, that would be disrespectful to their talent. They should simply just keep the cast if the actors wanted to go back and voice their characters and with the new upcoming movies and tv show, then they would search only for native and asian actors to play the new characters.
3) They are taking too much unnecessary risks because a new Avatar will divide the fandom just like Tlok did in 2012 and the fandom can also don't vibe with the new cast work(and I didn't even coment on the rumors they can change the animation style). Both of these things can flop Avatar Studios projects especially in a world were they have to compete with Rick and Morty and Arcane among other young adults cartoons.
So their job is to please the fans and please the main audience that can become a fan after the new projects, but too much changes can make the old fans go away, we saw that happen before with other franchises. And again, they will have to compete for audience with excellent Young adults cartoons
They should do the safe, conquer the fandom first and then start to taking risks and expand the show to newer audience. If they tried to please both all at once, they can ended up pleasing no one
