This is my husband, my hero, my best friend. We met in 1989 when he was posted to my hometown of Townsville. I was a teacher’s aide and had already decided that I was going to marry a soldier. Poor Rob became positioned in my crosshairs. After marrying in 1992 we set off on our military life adventure. Our first army house was a two story house that wasn’t built in underneath, where our laundry was located. It also didn’t have aircon so we put one in a window and used a plastic shower curtain to contain it in one area of the house. We have lived in seven cities and moved eight times together. We have two beautiful girls and now live in our own dream home. He has been oversees many times and we have had to live apart. Life was hard but rewarding. While he has been deployed our girls got swine flu, I had my uterus out, my granny died, our girls have had mental health issues and we all have had meltdowns. Life as a military family was hard but we survived. My husband survived but his mental health and body didn’t. He medically discharged out of the army after thirty years of service. He is broken 😞 not just his body but his mind. Last year was the hardest year we have had as one night he decided he wasn’t worthy of staying in our lives. I am thankful that his plan didn’t work and that he is still with us. More needs to be done to help our military members survive life after the military, life after deployment. More than 1,200 Australian Defence Force veterans and serving personnel have died by suicide in the past two decades — almost three times higher than the number previously reported.
