the thing about the drowsy chaperone that always kills me is that the man in the chair thinks there’s two options to the chaperone’s advice: “live while you can” or “leave while you can.” and he’s cooped up in this lonely apartment and he’s telling us about his divorce, and he shuts everyone out and he tells us later that his dad left him and his mom and he thinks “it’s better to live than to leave” but he doesn’t realize. there’s a third option. “love.” he’s forgotten about love. “love while you can,” except he doesn’t think that’s an option for anyone— especially himself. “it’s better to live than to leave,” maybe, but it’s best to love.

i’ve been reflecting on what agents who requested & read the full Shadow Thief said (and it may not be wise to talk about it on main but at least this ain’t twitter), but it made me feel a bit as though there was no room in the market for a female protagonist who’s not a hashtag girlboss from page 1
