How I Spent January 2024: Exploring the World Through Free Audiobooks on the Libby App

In January 2024, I embarked on a personal challenge to listen to one audiobook each day using the Libby app connected to my local library. Little did I know that this simple decision would lead me down an incredible path of free entertainment, clutter-free living space, and a wealth of information.

reading through notes of some posts and its so weird that people are claiming that, those who tell others to read something other than ya, are classist, because most classics are some of the financially accessible forms of media out there

#some of the cheapest books iv bought were classics and im talking like 99¢ — $5 cheap #plus so many readings are free online and on utube..... when i started reading wuthering heights it was such a lifesaver to read along with #someone without having to pay for a separate audio book

Uuuuugh a buddy of mine wants to read the lord of the rings in english (i think he got the german Version. He also has never managed to sit through a Single movie. kinda silly how inaccessible the local library is

so a library card is €10/year. not a lot but if you're on benefits it's for free so like heck why would i pay for it right?

but if you want a free card you have to appear in person. it doesn't work online.

but due to understaffing the office times are not the opening times. thusly the one time i showed up there with my paperwork there was no one in.

i'm severely disabled and i just haven't had the physical strength to try to go again nor the leftover spoons to risk failing again.

i'm probably gonna do it online. it's just, man, i realized that my last attempt was 6 months ago. i'm still without a library card.

Ditching D&D Beyond or never got it in the first place? Here's some free/pwyw resources.

Dicecloud. This online app allows you to make and track character sheets for free! It does a lot of the calculations for you, just like dnd beyond would. Best overall replacement. (Thank you, @chryslerisdead)

PWYW Class Character Sheets by Emmet Byrne. These character sheets in my opinion, are easier to fill out and harder to mess up, with class-specific features built-in. You can easily edit them digitally, and there's even multiclass/homebrew options. Slap em on Google drive or something, share with your DM, lots of options.

Point-Buy Calculator. Easily automates character stat creation if you're using the Point-Buy system.

5e Level Up Tool. Select your class, select your level, get a digestible checklist of everything you need to do to level up. This one is SO GOOD and so slept on.

5e Spellbook. A quick way to reference your spells and build a Spellbook with a ton of filters.

Encounter Calculator. I know challenge rating isn't everything, but this is a good/fast way to see how balanced your encounters are, at a glance, at least in the eyes of the source books.

RPGbot. Lots of resources for DMs and players: encounter builders, dpr calculators, and lists of player options with sample builds and optimization suggestions, which may be helpful to folks new to the game.

Bonus: Online Tools (System Agnostic)

Here.fm. This is the alternative I use instead of roll20, because it's faster/easier. Drag and drop in maps and tokens in seconds, built-in library of stickers you can use for effects, draw right on the virtual tabletop, use temporary drawings to map out moves, built-in dice rollers, and options for proximity chat. I use it in combination with discord (just have players join your here room muted), but it could be used entirely on it's own, I imagine. Not built for ttrpgs, but works incredibly well for them.

Kenku.fm. A PWYW mini browser focused on mixing and sharing music to your dnd games through whatever app you use, with helpful discord support. This app also LEGALLY bypasses the issue that got all the YouTube discord bots shut down, so you can share YouTube audio worry-free.

flapkan. Holy shit, this might be the BEST character sheet option on this list! Form-fillable pdfs with fully automated built-in prompts to auto fill features and spells, built-in Point-Buy and other automated calculations, and it generates a lot for you. Can be used digitally or you can print!

Here's a list of my personal favorite resources for researching witchcraft, magic, and the occult!

Websites

Sacred Texts - This site is a collection of electronic texts about religion, mythology, legends and folklore, and occult and esoteric topics. Almost all of it is in the English language (translated) and when possible they give the original language (which is quite often)!

Jstor - Home to thousands of scholarly content. While there are limitations to the open and free content on the site, they still have quite a lot to offer! If you can afford the paid version I highly suggest you do so.

Wikipedia - I don't care what your high school lit teacher told you, Wikipedia is a great resource and a wonderful way to find where to start when you're learning a new topic.

Encyclopedia Britannica - A fact-checked online encyclopedia with hundreds of thousands of objective articles, biographies, videos, and more.

Angela's Symposium - Dr. Angela Puca's channel where she covers peer-reviewed research and scholarship on magic, witches, esoteric traditions, the occult, Paganism, shamanism and related currents.

ReligionForBreakfast - Dr. Andrew M. Henry's channel that discusses--you guessed it--religion! His goal is to improve the public's religious literacy by exploring humanity's beliefs and rituals through an anthropological, sociological, and archaeological lens.

I am 🌟 COLLECTING 🌟 library cards

Reminder that the Libby App (library app - has books, audio, graphic novels) let's you add multiple libraries, you just need your card number and pin, and when you search for materials will search all of the data bases you have access to! Making the chances of you getting the book (and quickly for example if one library has a wait-list for the book, another might not) much better!!!

Don't buy books from Audible/Amazon when you can use free public resources even if you can't leave your house! You can even apply for library cards online without going in and usually get a 30 day grace period before having to go in with a license/id for a permanent library card 💖💖💖
