October Almost-Drabbles 10/1: Skeletons

Side note: if it wasn’t obvious, this takes place in my One Big Happy Family universe. Think of it as a sort of side story offshoot.

“Daddy!” Wanda called out as she stomped angrily into the room. Pietro wasn’t far behind, though he was decidedly less incensed.

“Hmm? Charles looked up from the pumpkin decoration he was adjusting. Needlessly, if Erik had anything to say about it. He didn’t, though, being more preoccupied with cooking duties at that moment.

“David made us help him with one of the skeletons!”

“Oh? Do you not like skeletons?”

Wanda shook her head. Pietro nodded his.

“They’re gross!”

“They’re cool!”

Both spoke at once. Wanda fixed her twin with a glare.

“They’re GROSS. I hate touching the bones! I never want to touch bones ever again.”

“Well you see, Flower-“ There was a gleam in Charles’ eye that Erik would have recognized if he’d seen it. As it was, their youngest children were oblivious. “That’s rather unfortunate. Can I tell you a secret?”

“Yes!” A dual chorus as both of them leaned closer, smiling.

Whispering conspiratorially, he said, “There’s a skeleton touching you right now, from the inside.”

Wanda shrieked in disgust. Pietro’s eyes got very wide. “Really?” He asked.

“Really.”

“Coooooool.” He looked at his own body in awe, twisting this way and that as if he could somehow see the bones moving under the skin.

Wanda was glaring at hers, and Charles could feel the sensation of BETRAYAL wafting off of her. The unexpected joys of parenting, he thought. He could still recall, quite vividly, how Lorna had reacted to finding out where, exactly, babies came from. The look of offended hurt on Erik’s face after their daughter had smacked his arm, yelling “How could you do that to Daddy?” was a cherished memory, especially during his subsequent pregnancies.

Speaking of Erik, the man himself came out of the kitchen. His apron was flour dusted, as were his hands, and he wore an expression of exasperated fondness. It was as if he knew, without being told, exactly what had occurred. Sometimes Charles wondered who was the psychic one between them.

“Pietro, go see if your Tante Raven needs help with her own decorations.” At the sound of his Papa’s voice, their little spitfire was gone in a flash. There was a lingering thought of Oh boy are there more skeleton bones to touch? that almost had Charles cackling.

“And you,” Erik stooped down to Wanda’s level. She was pouting. “You can come with me to finish the baking.”

Now it was her turn to look at her parent with wide, saucer-like eyes.

“Really? Can I help ice the cookies?”

“Once we wash your hands, Maus, you can even help me knead the dough.”

She let out a cheer and ran into the kitchen ahead of him, gross skeleton fact promptly forgotten.

Before following her, mainly to make sure she actually did wash up before touching any of the food preparations, Erik fixed Charles with a look. On anyone else, it would have been a glare, but there was no actual heat to it.

Charles smiled and shrugged.

Erik rolled his eyes before heading back to his work.

sakurascript is really weird with calling functions, but I Think if you call it as a variable ( %(function) ) it doesn't interrupt the script?? maybe??

This book I got to scan for otherkin talks about quantum physics-based magic. I literally cannot escape quantum physics-based magic systems. Can Guilty Gear just like give me a moment, ok, for getting me consistently into this mess. I need to throttle Dr. Paradigm. My brain is getting so wrinkled from having to learn about quantum theory and particle theory and Planck's Constant and Heisenberg's Principle and Bohr models... At least it's in English this time. I GUESS.

after rereading dark rise i am now pondering the similarities between james immediately being cast out by the stewards when they realized he was a reborn despite the fact that he had no control over who his past self was versus strict religious communities that believe being gay is a sin and someone is inherently bad because of their sexuality even though they're just born that way and it's a normal part of a person

You ever do something not thinking much of it, but after you do it you realize it was actually like a genius move?

This happened to me with my story: Started it off with a fairly standard conflict; someone wants what Tuon has. But afterward I was like "Oh shit, this is a prime opportunity to show his unyielding guardianship!" But not only that, I also realized that it did a great job at reflecting his flaws and sort of foreshadowing them to the reader

Oh man THATS SO GOOD!! It is so nifty when things work out like that, I hear you- long story relatively short, you betcha.

I had something like that with Aeonian, my Tav for Baldur's Gate 3. One of their quirks that I put down on paper early on was that the places were their muscles would be are rock hard - mainly because of the fact that they're cramming a monolithically sized form's worth of matter down into a humanoid body thats eight times smaller, hence putting a lot of strain on their body as a whole, but also à la a statue for a physical form.

"Statue for a physical form.... death and rebirth themes*......statue made of rock. wait."

Because I cannot escape my hyperfixations, geology was thrown back in my face in whence I was immediately reminded of the ROCK CYCLE:

-which can be pretty well-applied to the whole death and rebirth thing, not to mention a nifty little guideline as to how their character arc can go as well as Aeonian's place as a story in of themselves (long story, involves statues though) and their tendency to 'erode' themselves per se if it means getting where they need to be. Metamorphosis also links pretty cleanly here too, not only because of the metamorphic rock and its processes but because of parallels between Aeonian (embodiment of death [at sea]) and Thanatos, the greek personification of death, who is usually represented by way of butterflies.

I'm real bad at explaining things so I apologize if none of this made a lick of sense, I promise it's a lot clearer in my head and please feel free to ask for clarity on anything!! this is probably some of my favorite character work I've done so far

this is the second time lee hakhyun seen a reader die in front of him. he can't save him. this time, he can only watch as the sentences he wrote played out in reality.

I wanted to ask. Why did you risk your life for this child. Why jump in for a character who has no connection to you? Maybe I know the answer. 「Because he is a fragment of Kim Dokja.」

just like jaewoo, a little kdj kkoma soul comes out, and is taken away by black hands <- before it was white hands. which is weird, but there's no time to think about that right now. the last sentence lhh wrote is repeated.

「Finally, it was the story end that the reader wanted.」

lhh is close to a breakdown. it's WOS that protects him, bringing up sentences from yjh to stabilize him. "if you don't give up, there's still a way."

jung heewon asks if there's a way to save eunho. she's,, not doing well. her father just died, and her brother is close to death. lhh receives medicine from the sccenario rewards.. but... it's not enough. he asks bihyung, and the bureau is a mess due to the whole outer god thing. additional rewards are delayed. looking to the constellations, the stars have medicine, but they're just trying to scam him.. there is another way, though.

the meteorites have different materials depending on the colour, as mentioned in orv. the one they have is a faint turquoise colour. lhh tried to order his slime into broken faith, but it rejects him. he can't use 'incite' for 10 minutes as a penalty. he picks up a random item on the ground, but jung heewon steps up and says she'll break it instead. her magic is different. there's a notfication that jung heewon's inner self is filled with madness, and there's another attribute evolution.. if jung eunho dies here, jhw will evolve into the 'crazy butcher'. the butcher was a lonely person, and lhh can't have that happen to jung heewon. jung eunho has to be saved.

inside the meteor, there are 3 'shaolin pills' (?) that jung eunho can eat. he mixes it with the previous medicine to reduce the toxicity, but when they give it to eunho, he goes through a qi deviation jhw and lhh try to help regulate the qi, and even if lhh knows only murim masters could help, he still has to try. they keep trying, but they still couldn't save him. it's like fighting against fate. it's like someone is trying to turn jung heewon into the crazy butcher.

just as he's about to let go and give up, his new story appears. 'Persistent Murim Master'. this is the story the constellation passes down to him,, following the story, he's able to regulate eunho's magic, and eunho is cured.

he hears another 'special' sentence.

「And Writer Lee Hakhyun recorded the whole story.」

he wonders, where do these sentences come from? is it from orv, wos? the fourth wall, or the final wall?

「Do y ou wa nt to kn ow?」

he does want to know.

now isn't the time to pass out.. but he's exhausted. he closes his eyes, and when he opens them.. he's in the snowfield. kim dokja is there. kim dokja hands him some tea, created by the 81st yjh. it's good. kim dokja can have stuff like that, because he's the oldest dream, and he can imagine it. it's peaceful here, but lhh feels a little different. he sees the faces of jung heewon, jung moonho, jung jaewoo, the heavenly beggar in the tea.

he asks kim dokja why he's still dreaming.

#he does not have a name yet but he DOES have a vague concept. author from the eastern union who got drafted into the military and-- #--met another guy during the 1 week he had b4 getting shipped out to basic training. they immediately develop a WAY intense relationship-- #--and constantly send letters to each other. author is a total chickenshit and comes to cope w the violence of war thru-- #--alcoholism and a complete retreat into his obsession w the other man. gets a couple wires crossed and has his lust morph into more + more #--violent fantasies that the other man plays along w bc its Fun+Wild (at its core its the authors desire for CONTROL. if hes the one-- #--bringing the pain then hes safe. even better if its with the single person in existence he feels like he can trust during that-- #--period of time). manages to live throughout the rest of the war and rushes back to his lover. spends a slowly degrading week w him where- #--the man comes to realize what he thought of as simple metaphor+exaggeration was TRUE desire from the author + the author flounders-- #--without the then expected+familiar terror day in and day out. culminates in the man demanding the author leave and never try to contact-- #--him again (saying their romance was wild and exciting and unlike anything hed ever experienced but the only good way it couldve ended-- #--was if the author died out on the front and forever left him Wanting without the actual reality of those desires realized) and the-- #--author either tries to shoot himself or the man (fails to do so. lol) b4 running off to the first train out of town. worlds messiest guy #ya it leans a bit into samarie territory but hes fun. his theoretical ending b would probably have smth to do w sylvian worship + marriages #even more vague idea for his moonscorched form is a sopping wet pathetic red wolf ('red wolf' being one of the mans terms of endearment-- #--thru their wartime love letters) w its legs tangled up in barbed wire so it has to drag itself around. red bc its incredibly-- #--thin skin (<-- do you get it .) splits and bleeds thru with every movement. a lot of whining and incoherent babbling as it hesitates to-- #--ACTUALLY attack anybody. should have some cock horror element but ive no ideas on that front LOL #skill ideas are persistence predator (more melee damage dealt the less mind hes got- a backstory choice where he focuses entirely on the-- #--love letters rather than splitting focus on his on-pause career with short stories) and an unnamed one playing into his terror/lust deal- #--where he gets a buff to either melee damage or speed when his phobia is active. want to come up with at least one more though #mmmaybe him being an author doesnt play that well into his concept as a whole but hes my strangeguy so whatever

Hot take: If I had to pick between Will Byers main character-ism or Byler, I would not hesitate to choose the first person. Like I fucking love Byler but if it came at the expense of Will’s character arc, I’d rather not have it at all

#it’s so annoying when will’s character is just reduced to his relationship with mike #with mike like i also want him to get character development and get insight into him #but like he’s arguably a less important character than will. that’s not a jab on mike #like it’s okay to be a side character or at least not fundamentally intertwined into the main narrative #he will definitely play a role and hopefully a big one where his strengths will shine and he will be able to be the best version of himself #but will is will fucking byers #the story started with him and is going to end with him #el is the only character who rivals him in this regard #(it doesn’t matter if he was sidelined he’s still a huge part of the narrative) #he needs to finish his coming-of-age story #to come to terms with his trauma and vecna and sexuality #and while i want byler to be canon too. if it meant taking away attention and focus from his actual character than yeah #stranger things #will byers

i really want to start making a table collecting statistics on the audience demographics i'll perform my aubrey material for (like what generation most of the audience is, whether i'm performing in a predominantly queer space, etc.) and how well the jokes land bc like. i need to collect more data points before i can properly present my findings but the results so far have been fascinating

Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should join the travelers on the larger river boat for a short lunch ...

"Before he even fully musters the courage to shout a 'hello', the large group on the boat initiates contact first, gleefully waving at him, whooping and shouting as they near his tiny raft in the water. Apparently, some of them were betting over whether they'd actually find any other travelers out on the river today.. He fumbles over his words a bit, as always, but somehow manages to successfully get himself invited onto their boat for a quick lunch..

After safely securing his raft to the side of the boat with some spare rope, he climbs aboard, stumbling into the excitement of some sort of celebration. A few of them explain that they're traveling for 'kahesallei', an old elven holiday recently re-popularized in some of the larger cities nearby. Whatever it's true meaning and origins used to be, the current significance (at least to those within the city walls) seems to just be mindless feasting, drinking, and gaudy decor. Most of the traveling group are strangers to each other, only brought together by catching a ride on the same tour/party boat, but the mood is light, quite friendly between them, and perhaps a bit drunk.

While the boat itself is relatively plain wood, it's been strewn with gold and orange banners, flags, shimmery tassels, beads, and bushels of dark green ivy braided with fresh herbs and wildflowers. There are flat round tables of food and drink, plenty of cushions to lounge on, and one random guy perched precariously on the edge railing of the boat, gently strumming a lute for background music..

The elderly ship captain hobbles over to The Adventurer, sternly explaining that, no matter what the 'silly' passengers say, he's only allowed to stay for an hour because he didn't pay for a boat ride ticket, and thus really shouldn't even be allowed on board. By the time The Adventurer has mentally processed this information, the captain has already returned to his little steering room, slamming the door shut with a displeased grunt.. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to confront him or question the rules...... But! Hey, at least he has one hour at the party.. How should he spend his time? "

I can't even do five simple things in 2 weeks lol. I did start some new supplements and change my diet since #my doctors are still trying to sort out what health issues are going on or etc. so maybe it's something with that #like accidentally on the new diet I'm not getting enough calories or not getting enough of some vitamin or something so it's made me oddly #brain foggy and just really tired and unable to focus well for the past few weeks or something..? ANYWYA. not really sure what #it is specifically but my functioning in terms of actually focusing on and completing tasks has been a lot worse . thus #chronically behind on things. which I am always chronically behind on things in some sense since I always have like 7000 projects #I'm working on at the same exact time and etc. lol. but like.. even more chronically behind than usual .. ToT #ANYWAY.. I'm suprised that the 'try to get a ride on the boat' option didn't get that many votes actually lol #Like.. treveling down a river in a tiny handmade raft is probably.. not extremely safe or efficient lol #But at least he gets to have lunch there. Just the hour that he's on the boat doing whatever will get him a lot further because the boat #is moving faster than his raft would be. It should still get him out of the river and back on track sooner. Because he still has a long way #to go to get to the abandoned castle. I know it's been a lot of days since I'm not keeping up well with actually doing these #daily or every other day - but technically in the story it's only been a little over a day since he left the Inn #The first day he just walked. the second day he saw there was a barrier in his path. then spent half the day building a boat. and now he'e #*he's where he is now. The trip is roughly 4 days and he's like.. a little over halfway through his second. Not counting any detours or #distractions he might run into. But at least at this pace he should be off the river before it starts to get dark #Thate the main thing. you want to get a good rest on solid ground. ideally. So long as nothing strange happens on the boat #but yeah! day 10.. of little elf man adventure... ALSO he is like early 20s I imagine. so he can drink hbhjbjh #I know the 'very quick simple ms paint style' is kind of chibi-ish so it makes people look young but he's not a boy #don't worry. I didnt want it to seem weird like some 10 year old kid walking into a party of drunk 30 year olds #like a toddler hanging out in a night club or whatever. If anyone heard me talk about some of my 'takes' on inclusivity/diversity headcanons, they would think of me as an asshole- but it's not because I don't want/enjoy/indulge in diversity/inclusivity headcanons, it's because you FOOLS the PERFECT candidate is right THERE!!

#this is lighthearted #and mostly jokingly said #I get people give their blorbos projection headcanons and that is so valid of them #but I am a godawful annoyance when it comes to adhering to canon #if I wanted a character to be transfem she/they/fae I would not pick the most bland clown guy on the planet #I really like diversity headcanons that build up the story instead of contradicting it #like tiger and bunny #everbody makes Barnaby a trans guy- okay I guess he's a little on the femmeish side if you squint #but homeboy didn't have a PERSONALITY outside of [his parent's death] #he was asked on screen what he wanted to do after avenging his parents and he basically said that was his only goal in life #now contrarily #Kotetsu T.
