This might be a lukewarm take or that I'm pointing out the obvious but I NEED To talk about how good thistle and marcille are as character foils.

These panels here in particular. They drive me NUTS. Marcille is terrified of outliving her loved ones. Thistle had a similar fear, and he took fate into his own hands, making sure his loved ones would never die, a task that was forced upon him yet drove him mad. When marcille becomes the dungeon lord you can see more and more of thistle through her. thistle basically lived marcille's wish, I bet pre-Dugeon lord thistle had that fear of outliving everyone too, being an elf raised by humans (also drawing back to marcille's half-elf status)

They both want to protect their loved ones. Their sin was loving too much and it ended up in thistle's downfall and almost resulted in marcille losing herself as well

So. It’s no secret that the dunmeshi manga gradually changed art style as it went on (thereby twinkifying a few characters…) but I like to think that, in Thistle’s case specifically, it was also a change in perception by the party. I mean…

Early in the story, when all they knew about him was that he was the creepy, all-powerful mad sorcerer? Probably were much more intimidated by him. Same with the reader. BUT….

By the end? Oh, he’s just a little jester twink who writes poetry and can be picked up and slung around like a bag of potatoes. No way they could take him seriously anymore. Literally this meme but in reverse
