Imagine reading this passage and coming to the conclusion Lyanna eloped with Rhaegar voluntarily. If she doesn’t like Robert for fathering a bastard and thinks his actions are unethical, what makes you think she would fall for a guy who is married and has two children? Foul play was at hands. Anything else would ruin what little characterization Lyanna has.

'It would seem he has met some trouble on the road. My lord father is quite vexed. You would not perchance have any notion of who might have wished my brother ill, would you?” … “Your brother has been taken at my command, to answer for his crimes,” Ned Stark said.'

Look at Ned unfailingly staying on Catelyn’s side even though he doesn’t have the full story. Couple goals.

'Littlefinger did not need to be urged. “I will bring the City Watch,” he promised Ned.'

And yet you won’t come on time, asshole. Which no doubt was deliberately done.

'As you say, m’lord.” “Still … we wouldn’t want him to leave here entirely unchastened, so”—through the night and the rain, he glimpsed the white of Jaime’s smile—“kill his men.'

I will never forgive Jaime for practically killing Jory and crippling Ned. Never.

'When he opened his eyes again, Lord Eddard Stark was alone with his dead. His horse moved closer, caught the rank scent of blood, and galloped away. Ned began to drag himself through the mud, gritting his teeth at the agony in his leg. '

If I am forced to read this horrific part then so will you guys.

'Littlefinger and the City Watch found him there in the street, cradling Jory Cassel’s body in his arms.'

You are late, little finger. Poor Jory. Rest in peace.

Sadly, I was not good about tagging when I first joined the fandom, and I’m still not consistent. 🫣 But I looked around and have found some stuff you might enjoy.

I like these posts about Dany's relationships with her nephews as being foreshadowed by her interactions with Rhaegal (Jon) and Viserion (Aegon). This post about potential foreshadowing for Dany to kill Aegon. This spec about Dany v Aegon and Jon betraying her. This one, about how killing Aegon will not be the victory she expects, and some parallels between him and Robb .

I have a tag for Dance of Dragons 2.0, but the better one to peruse is prolly sayruq's on that topic. Also, just so you know, the fandom at large seems to think "mummer's dragon" means Aegon is fake, but we tend to believe he's Elia's son and that that's about Jon. I'd recommend reading Aegor's tag for more general Aegon content.

I can't find any specific book meta about how the Starks will defeat the Others at the moment, although I linked to a meta about it happening at Winterfell in this post. If anyone has a post they like or wrote on it, please send it catofoldstone's way!

Let's see...I haven't been doing a good job keeping up with meta for the past year, but I think there's good stuff in the Stark v Tag tag which has foreshadowing for conflict between wolf and dragon and spec about Arya and/or Jon assassinating Dany. Oh, here's the tag talking about foreshadowing for Dany to face-off with Euron which I find interesting spec. I do have a few tags I’ve tried to remember to use more, Book Jonsa, R+L=J, King Bran, The Girl in Grey. This post about the Ashford Tourney Theory has links for meta on that (it's a beloved Jonsa theory), and I have a few additional things tagged for it. I also have this post with some favorite Jonsa metas. The Sansa and Lyanna tag has been fun due to @please-dot's eye for parallels.

theusurpersdog doesn't seem to be active any longer, but their posts on Dark Dany are very good. This one has links to the previous ones in their series on her. I like this one about book Jon as well.

I enjoyed howlandreads writing (also inactive), especially this post, Feminine Rebellion in ASOIAF.

Reading trinuviel's post about Dany being Azor Ahai (but that being a bad thing!) was formative for me, so even though I feel like I link that a lot, I shall again! This is the final post in the series and has links to the previous entries.

Fedonciadale is someone I thought of as our very own ASOIAF expert. She passed away a year ago, but I’d encourage you to look through her masterlist. She was a fan of LOTR and Martin is a huge fan (he said he regularly rereads it), so I was very interested in the parallels she found between the two series.

I’m not sure if you were around for this, but Istumpy did a reread project and you can find links to each of those posts in this master post. You may want to look at the summaries for each book in that post to find where the foreshadowing for a specific topic is and approach it that way.

The one meta by someone beyond our corner of the fandom that I think about often is that famous series of essays on Dany because Martin endorsed them. It was written years and years ago, and after reading Martin's words on it, it's hard to understand how Dark Dany is treated as a fringe theory or rejected as part of shipping wars.

I hope you find something you enjoy somewhere in all of that!

I'm pretty sure my brain will never have the dexterity or diligence to do what @istumpysky did with the Reread Project. Not now, not in some distant future where I became a Mean Canadian capable of time travel and with a questionable taste in undead pirates. ❤️

6. I for sure have a couple of old favorites that I periodically come and revisit.

I Want Something So Impure by silentfrenzy is a classic in my mind. It's got loads of Jonsa angst, and was especially something I read a lot after s8 came and kneecapped me, personally. It's a one shot, and is actually a songfic, though I forget that all the time, and is mainly an extremely cathartic fight between Jon and Sansa, showverse

 strike hard and true, crow (or i'll come back and haunt you) by Hatice is another dark Jonsa that I used to read all the time. Dark, angsty Jonsa was my absolute fav back in the day (still is, really). Really goes hard into implications of resurrection based on book canon, and I enjoy that immensely.

Of Ribbons and Barbarians by SainTalia is, unsurprisingly, another Jonsa fic, but this time set in an amazingly imagined AU where the Targaryens never came to Westeros. This is the kind of fic writing that I aspire to.

and to prove I do read fic other than Jonsa, there's also we get dark, only to shine by Elizabeth (aghraine), which is a LucreziaCesare fic, which mixes the showtime Borgias with the actual history

there are a couple others that I personally have on my laptop, but have been deleted from ao3 😩 Rip "your mess is mine" you will always be famous.

7. At the moment, I really only have one major fic idea that I've been working on and off for ages. I've resolved not to publish it until its finished, which may be a long time, lol. A couple of years ago, there was a Jonsa week prompt set that used one of the Seven for each day. I ended up writing a short one for the Smith, and then shelved it because I wasn't happy with it. I ended up reopening it last year, and trying to write a multi part series with each chapter being themed after one of the gods. The main thing that inspired me to reopen it was, uh, some chats about Sansa bathing in the godswood a la Jonquil and how that fits the Maiden theme, hahaha. I have a couple of other Jonsa ideas that I periodically work on but I doubt will ever be posted. Oh, and there is a Maris/Aemond fic that lurks in the back of my ASOIAF fanfic folder. It predates "a poison tree", but I got sidetracked with that project, lol.

13. I actually plan a lot before I write. I do a ton of outlining and spitballing before I ever end up typing anything, and I also don't write chronologically. It's one of the reasons why I struggle to put out chapters regularly, because I am rarely writing in order, and am usually writing way out in the future, before circling back. I actually have more plans for my inactive published fics, but I haven't written the connecting pieces to what's already has bee published, lol. But I do spend a ton of time just thinking about what I want to write and where I'm planning to go. Which then gets frustrating when I end up scrapping a lot, lol.

i recently binged hotgw (by recently i mean a little while ago, i've just been a bit too shy to properly drop in) and i just have to tell you how much i love it which is best summarised by this

first i just have to say... the character dynamics!!!!!!!!!

you've put so much care at giving all of the characters the reader knows with such a unique, highly-detailed and multi-faceted relationship and it really shows because not onky is every relationship brilliant but i'm so invested in each and every one.

the earlier chapters are so interesting with the way you've written the broader baratheon dynamics - i would've never even thought to consider a barristan selmy relationship, and the decline of robert's character (not that he ever had much integrity to begin with haha) through her lens is so so interesting - it expertly shows the scope of how one character impacts another. also, the baratheon and targaryen lineage you paralleled with young griff was just ajsjajshxhhaajajajwj

and nothing delightfully pains the cockles of my heart than a dysfunctional father-daughter relationship (deffo not projecting here), you've managed to capture such an interesting mix of regret, anger, distance and love it's just so realistic and lovely (and sad) to read.

i also love how you developed selyse further than the (shit)show ever did and you've made her character development feel so earned.

i would go into detail how much i love their bond but i would be here all day and this ask would be even longer than it already is

and getting into the two best relationships - robb and jon!!!!!!!!

a lot of fics always diminish the first relationship in order to make the second properly established but my god have you written them both so equally well.

the fact that robb (and all of the other dead starks) gets mentioned and is thought about so often is painful, but like, in a good way (especially compared to the show where rickon was never thought/mentioned again after he died). and i love love love his and the reader's dynamic - it's all so tragic but in a very very good symbolic and narratively satisfying way (even if my heart breaks apart every time).

and jon!!!!!! the way you have them doing constant acts of service unthinkingly gets butterflies in my stomach... and i'm a lesbian haha

i also adore how their relationship doesn't always improve in a linear line, as does her healing process becausw let's be honest... life isn't like that. and you've written her trauma so well and with such honour and dignity while still maintaining a sense of reality i just have to applaud you.

i'm also loving your insertion of the magical side of things into everything which is the thing that always pissed me off about the show - it was never meant to be a game of thrones but rather a song of ice and fire!!!!

and all your foreshadowing is so so so clever!!! i don't get half of it in the moment but whenever i reread (which is a lot) certain things tend to make such sense as the plot progresses and i just makes me so ughfhfjdjsj

and speaking of future events i cannot wait to see what you do with euron (it's already 1000000x better than the show) and the greenseeing i'm so fucking hyped.

the reader has been on such a journey from being grave as a coping mechanism (so so cool by the way) to wearing her heart on her sleeve, and with a high battle iq and political tactics, i just love her so much.

so thank you for putting so much effort into the story and for posting it too (it takes a special kind of bravery to participate in the got/asoiaf fandom, which i certainly don't have haha) and i cannot wait to see how it continues <33333

First of all, I do not deserve such an in depth ask about this story, you are way, way too kind!

I'm glad the characterization agrees with people, one of my biggest things about the series is consistency. How to develop these characters we already know into plots we haven't seen yet but keep them recognizable. It's my biggest worry with every chapter that I have totally missed the mark.

But a lot of these characters did not get their fair treatment, and they have so much potential. It's also just fun trying to think, what changes in this world with a whole other human being? Like how does the dynamic with Ser Barristan effect the story, does it have an impact on events later on? How do I incorporate the reader without making them feel shoved in or feel like I've made them too important and it takes away from the other characters, but also not have them be just set dressing in the background.

Robb will never leave this story, and I am beyond thankful he and the readers relationship worked as well as it did for you all. I adored their marriage and I knew it was going to have a huge long lasting impact and feared how it would go over should people not believe their love.

And boy oh boy I hope you were being honest about the magic stuff because we are about to go in pretty deep with that side of this world that the show never even slightly touched. But I'm super excited about it all, so I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Also, I knew putting that jab in there was so petty but I could not help it, that episode is the bane of my existence.

Dearest Stumpy, when I was reading your ADWD reread (Stumpy Reread Project of the Stumpy Reread Project when??) I was once again struck by the Dune parallels with the many fragmented protagonist characters - most especially D/aenerys, who must be wary of the perfumed seneschal.

If, as you say, she must be wary of the faith, it reminds me very much of Paul's struggle in the first Dune book to not become a messiah of Death. If you haven't read Dune, and want a project after ASOIAF... you might be interested in some of the thematic and literal parallels. I doubt he'll play out Paul's story 1:1 with D/any (especially when I can see parallels of Paul with Jon, Bran, and Robb most especially - Robb and Catelyn with Paul and Jessica, for instance), but... er... D/any, you have a terrible purpose, and you're not resisting it anymore...

The movie and book are both on my to-do list, anon! I know little about either, but I trust your judgment on the parallels.

(You joke about Stumpy Reread Project of the Stumpy Reread Project, but I do have to go back and read AGOT again to catch foreshadowing I didn't know to look for.)

Most hits: The Debate of Bregor and Aegnor, a Silmarillion fic from 2013 in which Andreth's siblings finding out about her relationship with Aegnor and drama ensues. In one of the great mysteries of my fandom life, this fic has 9,068 hits - over two and a half times more than the fic with the second largest number of hits, which is for a much bigger fandom (asoiaf). It doesn't have a proportionately larger number of kudos than my other Silm stories. Maybe it's a glitch? Maybe there are a handful of people who reread it hundreds of times? I'll probably never know lol

Most kudos: Five Times Kareen Told Ezar the Truth and One Time She Didn't, a Vorkosigan fic that explores Kareen's relationship with Ezar from her marriage to his death, with 123 kudos. The Vorkosigan fandom on AO3 is very generous with feedback, more than any of other fandom I've written for :) I do also think this is one of my best fics, so it feels good that it has the most kudos.

Most comments: What We Are Allowed, which is basically Thick as Thieves from Laela's POV, has 45 comment threads and 62 comments total. This one has an advantage over the others because it's a multichapter fic and has a handful of regular readers who usually comment on updates <3

Most bookmarks: Blessed the Bride of Argos, the Agamemnon/Cassandra fic I wrote for Nonconathon 2021. According to the stats page it has 46 bookmarks, but when I actually open the fic it only shows 23 - I'm guessing the rest are private bookmarks? It's an E-rated noncon fic, so a lot of private bookmarks wouldn't be particularly surprising.

Most words: What We Are Allowed is incomplete but currently at 40,841 words. It's my longest writing project EVER and I'm extremely proud of myself for getting this far and updating relatively consistently (also I think it's a pretty good story).

Least words: Remember, another Silmarillion fic, with 376 words. It's about Morwen and Rian's relationship and also about Rian being a musical prodigy. I just reread it for the first time in ages and I think it holds up pretty well!

I have to commend Dany and her attempt to diffuse the situation. I miss this trait in the upcoming books, though.

'Viserys gazed at it with boredom in his eyes. “How long must we linger amidst these ruins before Drogo gives me my army? I grow tired of waiting.'

Good lord Viserys sounds like a petulant child here. He should have stayed in Pentos with Illyrio.

'Yes, Khaleesi, but … the Dothraki look on these things differently than we do in the west. I have told him as much, as Illyrio told him, but your brother does not listen. The horselords are no traders. Viserys thinks he sold you, and now he wants his price. Yet Khal Drogo would say he had you as a gift. He will give Viserys a gift in return, yes … in his own time. You do not demand a gift, not of a khal. You do not demand anything of a khal.'

It’s interesting what is stated here. Jorah, and by extension Illyrio, have warned Viserys he will come to regret never adapting more to the Dothraki culture. How his lack of respect for them let to his undoing. It makes me think. Since Viserys is a foreshadowing for Dany, it’s highly likely she will make similar mistakes in Westeros, because just like Viserys, she will refuse to adapt to it’s customs. And that will lead to her doom.

'What … what if it were not Viserys?” she asked. “If it were someone else who led them? Someone stronger? Could the Dothraki truly conquer the Seven Kingdoms?'

Oh look the wheels in Dany’s head are turning. She’s ready to usurp Viserys. Typical Targaryen behavior.

'He took from me all I loved, for the sake of a few lice-ridden poachers and his precious honor,” Ser Jorah said bitterly. From his tone, she could tell the loss still pained him. He changed the subject quickly. '

You sold them as slaves, Jorah, and that’s against the law. What should Ned have done. Celebrated you crimes?

'The Dothraki do not build. A thousand years ago, to make a house, they would dig a hole in the earth and cover it with a woven grass roof. The buildings you see were made by slaves brought here from lands they’ve plundered, and they built each after the fashion of their own peoples.'

A rather ominous line to associate with the Dothraki. It should be noted that Dany is embracing the Dothraki way swimmingly. Not a good look by the way.

'yet Vaes Dothrak is large enough to house every man of every khalasar, should all the khals return to the Mother at once. The crones have prophesied that one day that will come to pass, and so Vaes Dothrak must be ready to embrace all its children.'

A foreshadow for TWOW and how Dany will take over most of the Khalasar with the help of Drogon? I say yes.

'In some khalasars, Jhiqui said, the bloodriders shared the khal’s wine, his tent, and even his wives, though never his horses. A man’s mount was his own.'

Good lord what is this? GRRM racism jumped out when he wrote this.

'When her son sat the Iron Throne, she would see that he had bloodriders of his own to protect him against treachery in his Kingsguard.'

It’s interesting how Dany is never accused of usurping for these thoughts.

'It caught him full in the face. Viserys let go of her. Blood ran down his cheek where the edge of one of the medallions had sliced it open. “You are the one who forgets himself,” Dany said to him. “Didn’t you learn anything that day in the grass? Leave me now, before I summon my khas to drag you out. And pray that Khal Drogo does not hear of this, or he will cut open your belly and feed you your own entrails.'

Its good to see Dany stand up to her abuser. Well done, Dany. Definitely the highlight of the chapter.

The next chapter we are with our future kindhearted king: Bran.

A girl who has flowered, but not yet attained her sixteenth name day, is in a somewhat ambigious position: part child, part woman. A "maid," in other words. Fertile but innocent, beloved of the singers.

In the "general Westerosi view," well, girls may well be wed before their first flowerings, for political reasons, but it would considered perverse to bed them. And such early weddings, even without sex, remain rare. Generally weddings are postponed until the bride has passed from girlhood to maidenhood.

Tyrion is acutely conscious of the dangers of women dying in childbirth, so I wonder if GRRM messed up here when Tyrion proposed that Myrcella wed at age 14, or if Tyrion simply assumes that Trystane would do the right thing and not sleep with Myrcella until she was older. 

I believe that Trystane is a good person, and I believe that Trystane would not sleep with Myrcella until she was an adult, but how does Tyrion know this? 

We know from Tyrion's thoughts in ADWD that Tyrion doesn't want Myrcella to die, so perhaps Tyrion included in the marriage contract that Myrcella would be "wedded but not bedded" at age fourteen?

Or perhaps this speaks to the desperation of the Lannisters' situation in ACOK that Tyrion felt he needed a wedding between Lannister and Martell as soon as he could possibly get one? 

Or perhaps this is simply another example of GRRM's carelessness when writing child brides in his story?
