What are your favorite mass effect fics on the kinkmemes? I don’t understand livejournal very well @_@

Oh my goodness I'm honored you would ask me this.

I actually went through the entirety of the Mass Effect Kink Meme Part 1 (and a little bit of part 2) and pulled out basically every Thane fic I could find. That post is HERE.

My personal favorites from the above list are Body Shop, Sun Drunk, and Famed Control. Those fics are written by this anon in particular who has also written a bunch of incredible shrios, shenko and shakarian, among other ships.

The one called Mister is also very good.

I know a lot of people swear by Livejournal but I could never figure it out. I have to confess I made personal backups of these fics because I have no idea how much longer LJ is going to be around and I can't bear the thought of them being lost to time. Some of these fics were extremely influential to me when I wrote my first mass effect fics all those years ago.

4. Do you outline before you start writing? If so, how far do you stray from that outline?

i have outlined in the past - though usually when i'm already in-story, rather than from the beginning - and every time i've actually written an outline down it has been pure suffering. not that i don't outline in my brain, but for some reason, writing down an outline and then having to write it is painful for me, and in statistically most cases, means i don't finish the project.

10. Do you enjoy writing dialogue, exposition, or plot the most?

i've been told i'm best at dialogue, but i think i enjoy writing plot the most! but when it comes to longfics, after i get the payoff of several chapters' worth of foreshadowing. that shit is like crack.

20. What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?

already answered in a broad sense here - but for mass effect (since we're mass effect buddies) mordin is very, very fun to write! mostly his dialogue, but he also brings such chaos to scenes if you let him. he's terribly fun.

🧡 - Favorite non-Shepard pairings? Why do you love this/those pairing(s)?

🎗️- Something you would have liked to see more of in the games?

Fave pairings> Kolfer and Kriortez, aka Kolyat x Feron, and Thane Krios x Steve Cortez. (Also Pavan and Mickey, which are two total OC's, Blaise Shepard's dads.) They are all heavy headcanoning, I think that's what appeals to me about rarepairs so much though. You've got some bare bones to work with and then can adapt the stories and flesh out the characters to fit your own tastes. I'll try to give a brief overview. kolFer is: tall pouty prickly lad who is an introverted nerd annoyed to find he's fallen for the charms of short muscly extroverted flirty king, even more shocked to discover Feron isn't just a big old flirt but genuinely adores the ever loving shit out of him and they fall wildly in love. The more Kol pouts, the more Fer loves him. They work together as agents of the shadowbroker Liara. Kriortez: No one will ever sum it up better than @zet-sway did: "I'm just imagining their relationship. Both of them, professional as fuck. House is impeccably clean. They're well spoken and dependable. And the moment their spark is lit they're on each other like white on rice, handprints on the windshield, clothes on the floor, [redacted to keep this SFW lol] Heart eyes for days." I actually spend way more time thinking about non Shepard pairings than I do Shepard pairings. Like don't get me wrong I adore Shepard and my two Keahi and Blaise are my special blorbos, but I think the freedom of having less strict storyline beats with KolFer lets my imagination really go down a rabbithole (which is also probably why my Shepards are both pretty AU compared to the games). Something I'd like to see more of? More interactions that don't involve the main character. Those moments in 3 where you'd find squadmates chatting. The conversations in the rover in andromeda. All the interesting NPC's on the citadel. That stuff sparks the imagination and fleshes out the world so much and I love it, can't get enough, and would love to see more. Especially with the less explored species. Give me that juicy hanar lore, some elcor drama. A world that adapts and changes over time is always incredible too, though I know engine limitations are a thing. Andromeda hinted at that being a thing, but really all you saw was empty planet, then inhabited planet. Would be awesome to see some stages in between, growth and change each time you visit a place, some consequences to your actions.

8. What is their reaction to the Alchera mission? And after?

Man I wrote these questions without expecting I’d have to be writing answers. These are hard!!

stellan I think has it a little easier than mercy. karin chakwas was one of their aunts living away from the family commune, working for the alliance when mindoir was attacked. she took them in and together they grieve the loss of their vibrant (enormous) family. once stellan enlisted, the two of em didn’t serve aboard the same ship til the normandy. stellan was definitely boggled, wounded and a bit offended by the alliance sending them the mission, and ooooh karin was pissed at the audacity. they go down to alchera together, but explore and process the site separately. and stellan is with someone who was there, experienced the same floor cracking beneath their feet, lost the same people—they share and process grief together, again. and with joker :,)

as for mercy… well. mercy reads the message and goes what. what?? wow, fuck you! doesn’t tell anyone about the mission or where they’re going. purposely has edi guide the ship while joker is down with chakwas for pt and checkups (and the rare occasion when both are asleep during the same shift) and takes a shuttle down by themself. orders edi to lock the garage. no one’s following. stays out there until they’ve managed to claw every last dog tag out of the ice. 28 hours. mercy forces themself to lay down next to the twisted rails of what used to be the command deck and stare up at the sky and the stars past it, clutching at the dog tags and counting the seconds stretching between heartbeats (and has a total breakdown)

(and of course by this point joker n chakwas are super awake, and very aware they are orbiting goddamn fucking alchera locked inside the normandy, which is pointedly missing its commander. garrus and tali are also Not Happy. outrageously miserable start to the day. mercy what the fuck. why are you doing this by yourself. answer the phone. the rest of the gang is like what is going on. and like yeah mercy gave edi permission to share minimum biostats but that’s hardly any better, shepard)

also if you want to read extraordinary fic, the frozen sea by @zet-sway. Devastating, gorgeous, i think about it all the time, and 1701% inspired this question

15. What colors does Shepard prefer for their armor?

stellan obviously has an affinity for blues. alliance navy looks amazing on them. they settle on something that looks like moonstone for regular use, and a deep navy for stealth missions

in me1 mercy wears literally whatever color as long as the armor is good. me2 they wear this crazy stealth armor that’s not like kasumi’s cloaking but color shifts and slides to echo the environment. me3 is the GOLD ARMOR ERA that was cooked up between liara and hackett as some good promo. mercy’s like wtf is this shiny ass clown suit i will be blasted to pieces immediately. impractical. tacky.

and liara n hackett are like it’s for morale

28. What about hyperfixations? What’s the topic that will get Shepard rolling no matter the person or place

stellan can recall entire kepesh-yakshi games of legend, move by move, in the same gushing, wondering tone of a sports commentator, even hollering at times when recounting something especially remarkable. and their pet turtle along with the whole excruciatingly in depth journey of the aquascaping/aquaculture that went into building his enclosure

mercy loves music. can never get enough kind of love. to mercy, music is magic. the soul made tangible. they’ll excitedly discuss all sorts of up and coming artists across the galaxy with an awareness in trends that at first glance seems out of character. very passionate about music theory and instruments, fucking adores live performances. mercy is the type to spontaneously sweep someone into a dance

49. What is Shepard’s happy ending? What’s the dream that keeps em going

well by me3, stellan is thoroughly in love with shiala, who they’ve been in regular contact since that chance reunion on ilium in 2. they dream of joining her on zhu’s hope, of reconnecting and nurturing the earth beneath their feet. of watching shiala tend to her flowers while they make jam and bake bread before being swept up into an impromptu dance across the kitchen. of being warm and safe curled up in shiala’s big beefy biceps

9. Sickness

Sen’s first few nights after coming to on the Dareia are a blur. They're weak and feverish, especially at night. Their sleep is broken by nightmares so terrible they wake up screaming, though they have no memory of what they contain.

Every time they wake, though, Aeran is there. Arms wrapped tight around them, fingers tangled in their hair. They cling to him, more tightly and desperately than they would under other circumstances. “Please stay,” they whisper. “Please, please stay.”

Sometimes they fall asleep like that, face buried in his chest. As they drift in and out of sleep, they’re vaguely aware of him stroking their hair, pressing a kiss to the top of their head. They’re never sure if it’s real or a dream. By the time they wake the next morning he’s always gone.

8. Friendship

The wound is bad enough that Aeran has to half carry Alaitha up the hill. When they’re far enough away he helps her onto a turned over log. Her side is screaming with pain, but she keeps her hand pressed to it, feeling the blood pulse beneath her palm.

“Let me see, let me see.” Aeran gently pulls her hand away to take a look at her wound. Tears prick at the corner of her eyes, it hurts so much. If it were anyone but Aeran here, she’d be ashamed.

“It’s not the worst,” he says, pulling out his med kit. “It’s deep, but it’s clean.”

She nods. She’s shaking, a thin sheen of sweat on her face. “I’m such an idiot,” she says. “I should have seen him. I should have—”

He waves her words away, brow furrowed as he focuses on cleaning the wound. Alaitha goes quiet, gripping his arm as he applies stinging disinfectant. She feels like a little kid again, getting upset about something and Aeran running to her rescue. Like her real big brothers and sisters never had.

How did I get so used to not having him around? she thinks idly as he dresses the wound. How did I ever manage on my own?

“There,” he says. He smiles, that kind, big brotherly smile that only seems to come out now during times like this. “Good as new.”

She smiles back, and she wonders if he still sees her as that loud mouthed ten-year-old, running to keep up.

Varyn has long since fallen asleep in the carriage, leaving Alaitha and Aeran awake and too excited to sleep. They peer out the windows as the carriage travels on through the darkness. They giggle and jostle each other, pointing out the lights of distant towns on the horizon or constellations in the sky. At one point they hear a wolf howl, and Aeran starts so badly that Alaitha laughs out loud, quickly stifling it when Varyn stirs in her sleep.

When they tire of looking out the window, they whisper to each other, huddled in the blankets the carriage driver provided them with back in Tyridia.

“Do you think Varyn will let us talk to any important people when we get there?” Alaitha asks.

“Naw. She won’t want a couple of kids getting in her way.”

“Why is she bringing us, then?”

“Who knows why Varyn does anything?”

“Well, I think—”

“We can hear what you think in the morning, Bisera,” Varyn’s sleep laced voice suddenly says. “And Kellis, regardless of why I do what I do, I can tell you that I ask my apprentices to get a full night’s sleep so they aren’t tired in the morning.”

Aeran and Alaitha exchange looks. “Has she been awake the whole time?” Aeran mutters.

Whatever the case, Varyn’s eyes are tightly closed again, as though she never spoke.

Aeran paces back and forth across the length of their small apartment. Sen watches from a corner, long hair pulled over one shoulder as they absently comb through it with their fingers.

“Wearing a hole in the floor isn’t going to make things any better,” they say.

“I’m thinking,” he says. “There’s got to be some way for us to get more work.”

And get out of here, Sen adds silently. They’ve barely managed to scrape by since they got here. Still, Sen knows that Aeran working himself up is the last thing they both need.

Sen unfolds themself from their spot on the floor and moves in front of him, blocking his progress across the room. They reach for his hands and squeeze them tight.

“Hey,” they say. “We’ll figure it out.”

Aeran frowns, but clasps their hands back, threading his fingers with Sen’s. His expression softens, and Sen swallows. Music is drifting in through the open window. A street musician. Sen’s surprised they’re playing in the rain, but it’s always raining in Rona.

Dance with me, Sen thinks, looking into Aeran’s blue eyes. Hold me close.

But then he looks away and drops their hands.

First Meeting

Sienna stares open-mouthed at the tiny baby lying in Mother’s arms. The whole family is gathered round mother and child in the parlor, jostling, joking, cooing over how little Fios looks more like this relative than that one, over their mop of dark hair and their little fingers and toes.

Sienna hangs toward the fringes of the group, knowing even at age four that it’s better not to draw attention. But Fios is so sweet, gazing at them with bright eyes. Their tiny hands open and close. Unable to help themself, Sienna reaches out and lets their little sibling grasp one of their fingers in a soft, chubby hand.

The perfect moment is broken by a strangled scream from Mother. She yanks the baby out of reach, just as large hands grab Sienna around the waist to drag them roughly from the press of family.

Father puts Sienna down, glaring at the nursemaid. “Take them to their room. Now.” He looks furious. The relatives who aren’t comforting Mother are glaring at Sienna, and Fios’ high-pitched wails fill the room.

I didn’t do anything, Sienna wants to say, as Nurse is dragging them away by the hand. All I did was touch them. I didn’t do anything. But they just stare at their feet as their eyes ache and their throat burns.

What is your headcanon what drell penis looks like?

First of all, op, you are a treasure. This is my favorite kind of question.

Second of all I'm SO SORRY to let this sit in my inbox so long. Few things are as important as drell dick, but alas, those things are currently happening in my life.

Below a cut because we're talking about PENIS.

My answer is honestly not as spectacular as you may have been hoping. I've written a whole lot of smut about drell dick but it's not all consistent. I often leave a lot of things unsaid because I acknowledge the reader may have different ideas and I don't want to disrupt them. As well, I enjoy a variety of different dick interpretations. Example being that my shakarios fic (soon to be fics plural uwu) features Thane with two dicks and red pleats on the underside, inspired by @angstyastro's many delicious fanarts c:

But in general I have a handful of go-to headcanons that are common in the fandom.

Internal testes

Genital sheath

Ridges

A defined head (because why not)

I'd love to back this up with some kind of scientific interpreation but the truth is my thoughts are weak at best. Internal testes and genital sheath are inspired by earth reptiles who have the same sort of thing going on. Ridges could either be vestigial spikes (a lot earth species have spines or whatever on their dick which is super not fun to think about) or could be designed to basically "scoop" another male's sperm out of a mate for better chances passing on that particular dick's genes (I've heard this is why human dicks have a defined head).

I also love to think of drell penis as being some kind of warm shade of color, because they are red blooded and it would make an amount of sense for a blood-gorged organ to take on that sort of hue. But with that said, it could be blue hued too because color and skin are funny things (humans have some blue veins).

I don't think it would have scales, but if it did, they would be very very small. If I assume that the penis stays inside the body until aroused, it wouldn't need a protective layer of scales.

As far as size goes - I think they might have the same average size as humans. Drell general body size doesn't appear to be significantly smaller or larger than humans.

My favorite fanfic interpretation of drell dick is from this absolutely insane fic on the Mass Effect kinkmeme in which the anonymous writer describes it as a "florid magenta spike." I love this for Thane in particular because it would contrast heavily with his natural color and my eyeballs would bug out with excitement.

And if I had to pick one from Bad Dragon to be a drell dick, I think I'd pick Spritz :)

“Oh, Théo, you know you can’t come with me!” her mother says with another chuckle. She bends down to scratch him behind his long ears and he obediently drops his ball before he could try to stash it in her bag again. “I’m glad you came to see me off—inside the house here, so I know you haven’t snuck along with me. Good boy. You keep an eye on Ninette for me, alright?” 

“Ouaf!” Théodore barks, butting his head into her hand again for further scratches. If he had his way, she’d be here another three hours, just petting him. 

But that’s not what an adult’s schedule allows. (Or Ninette’s.) Her mother stands again, runs her manicured nails one more time through his ruff, then grins at both of them. “Well, I’m off! Don’t burn down the house, don’t eat take-out the entire time I’m gone, and don’t take sweets from—” 

“Mama, that was one time!” Ninette exclaims. Take a poké puff from a stranger one time, and your parent will never let you live it down. 

“It was four times by the time you were eight,” her mother corrects. 

“Well, I don’t remember all of those other times… And I’m not eight anymore! I’m fourteen and can make, buy, or otherwise obtain-from-not-strangers any sweets I need now.” As in, sweet-talk the elderly couple next door into baking for her. According to them, her birthday is every other week, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

I hadn't expected to get into Shoker at all this year but with MELE it ended up with a new Shepard and a renewed love of the jackass. I wrote two shorts about them and got a piece of art commissioned. And I'm even starting a long fic for them XD

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t

I have a few WIPs that I wanted to get posted before the end of the year, but sadly didn't have the time to do them justice (or even work on them as much as I wanted). Sometimes life makes things a bit difficult (or in my case, kids lol). The good news is that none of them are going to be forgotten. They might just take longer than I expected. One of those is my Shoker fic and a Kai Leng/Cerberus Shepard canon reimagining that I'm excited for.

Nuclear

“I saw somethin’.” The words came from Zaeed. They’d moved onto the second bunker after finding the first empty of any life whatsoever. The trio stopped, Thane and Shepard looking to the merc for further explanation. “I dunno, it was jus’a flash. Maybe I’m seein’ things but it was red.”

“Red.” Thane deadpanned. “Anything else of note?” Indignation flashed across Zaeed’s face.

“Now don’t go givin’ me any fuckin’ attitude. I saw it out the corner of my eye. Somethin’ red.”

“Zaeed, keep me updated if you see anymore. There doesn’t seem to be anything here with us now, but we need to be ready.” Why didn’t she tell them she had been seeing them since the first bunker? She couldn’t. Something was stopping her from saying the words. “Thane, you haven’t seen anything?”

“No, Shepard,” he said smoothly, always the professional when in the field. “But I will keep you informed.” But Shepard was watching Zaeed. His eyes were locked onto something past her, moving as if he tracked something. She turned to look over her shoulder, but saw nothing.

Zaeed was silent as they finished up the second bunker, finding nothing. It was wrong. Everything about this was wrong. And it got worse the moment they stepped into the third and final bunker.

The doors locked behind them and their comms filled with static.

“What the fuck?” Zaeed exclaimed as he opened his omnitool in a quick, fluid motion. He flipped over to their local comms, cutting the Normandy out completely.

“EDI?” Shepard asked loudly in the silent space. Thane cringed but didn’t switch over to local yet. “EDI!”

No response.

“Shit!” Shepard opened her omnitool to do the same as Zaeed. Thane followed her lead. She stepped to the door, running her hacking program to try to unlock the door. It beeped at her but stayed red.

“Whatever the scientists saw,” Thane began. “I bet it started here.”

“No fuckin’ shit,” Zaeed agreed. “Anythin’ this spooky has to be the beginnin’.”

“Have you seen more ghosts?” Thane’s eyes wandered over to Shepard, who stood with her back towards them as she ran different hacking programs on her omnitool. Of course he knew she had been seeing them without her saying anything. He knew everything about her.

“Yeah,” was all Zaeed said in reply. The door kept beeping. Shepard’s hand flew frantically across her omnitool as she tried again and again to unlock the door. “You?“

“No.” Thane stepped up to Shepard and put a hand on her shoulder. She tensed for a moment, her hand froze mid keystroke. “Shepard, we will find a way out. Do not worry yourself over it now.” Her shoulders fell in defeat. When she turned around, though, her face was defiant.

“You’re right. Whatever or whoever is in here will be letting us out of here.”
