LUO BINGHE HAS A "STEREOTYPICALLY MASCULINE" APPEARANCE
Rating: FANON - CONFLICTING
In fanworks, Luo Binghe is often portrayed as particularly muscular and buff, broad-shouldered, often with tanned skin and sharply-defined features-- all traits that are considered to be stereotypically masculine in the west.
All of this directly contradicts his canonical description.
Necessary disclaimer: I'm not talking against depicting Luo Binghe with a naturally darker skin tone. While that still contradicts the canonical description, I can understand going against colorism (something very rampant in east asian beauty standards!) in fanworks. This sort of discussion is particularly toward those who portray him as fair-skinned on Qing Jing Peak, darker skinned after the abyss, hence "tanned." While this sort of thing might have issues of its own, that's also not the topic of this post, and as a light-skinned Asian person, I don't feel particularly qualified to talk about it.
In truth, deep down, Bing-ge’s fair and clean pretty-boy type didn’t really suit the tastes of “Great Master” Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky.... The art of growing stallions was grounded in science, and the research was clear: women preferred men who looked cultured, pretty, and even a bit soft and feminine. (7 Seas, Ch. 26)
The buff and bulky Luo Binghe often seen in fanworks is not what I would consider to be cultured, pretty, soft, and feminine.
Luo Binghe is described this way just before the conference:
A seventeen-year-old youth, slim and tall and graceful, dressed in white robes, lips turned upward in the hint of a smile, gazed at him with a pair of shining eyes. (7 Seas, Ch. 4)
And again after his return:
The other party was a little taller than [Shen Qingqiu], slender and willowy, dressed in clothes as black as ink that exposed only a fair neck.  (7 Seas, Ch. 7)
And a description of his hands later on:
That hand was slender and unadorned. It didn’t look like the hand of a young lord of the demon race who had already taken countless lives, but rather one whose master had been born to pluck strings, his hand to burn incense and bathe in snow. (7 Seas, Ch. 14)
Consistantly, Luo Binghe is depicted this way-- slender and refined, with fair skin and a softness to his appearance that contradicts his actions.
Furthermore, Luo Binghe is also described as looking very similar to his mother:
Luo Binghe was beautiful, and he looked quite like his birth mother. (7 Seas, Ch. 4)
and
Yue Qingyuan’s knuckles slowly brushed along Xuan Su’s hilt. “I was able to meet Senior Su Xiyan once at an Immortal Alliance Conference, many years ago. Luo Binghe’s appearance is seven-tenths identical to his mother’s.  (7 Seas, Ch. 18)
As for Su Xiyan's appearance, not much is directly stated-- it can be inferred that she likewise looked quite similar to Luo Binghe, but the only description of her physical appearance that we have is found here:
Even if she wasn’t burly and heavyset, she should at least look like a martial arts master with fierce and ferocious eyes. For all that, when he finally met the culprit behind Tianlang-Jun’s bout of philosophical soul-searching, which had tormented Zhuzhi-Lang for many days, he realized that the culprit in question was not quite like what he’d envisioned... ... Just as these two tourists were standing penniless in the street, a tall woman dressed in black strolled by, sword on her back. (7 Seas, Ch. 25)
The only positive descriptor here is that she is tall, but it can also be implied that she does not have the appearance of a martial arts master, and did not look as fierce and ferocious as Zhuzhi-lang expected, especially in terms of her eyes. However, she is described as a cold person-- whether or not that carried over into her appearance, though, is up for debate.
Su Xiyan's eyes are another matter for discussion--
In appearance, Luo Binghe resembled his mother Su Xiyan, but you could more or less see the shadow of his father in him. For example, in the eyes. Tianlang-Jun’s eyes were deep-set, his brow strong and heroic, the irises dark like fathomless water. In this, he and Luo Binghe were very much alike. Luo Binghe had a pretty boy appearance in the first place, but if his eyes had resembled his mother’s too, his face would have been excessively feminine and the effect would be lost. (7 Seas, Ch. 15)
Here, specifically, Luo Binghe is noted as having his father's strong brow and deep-set eyes, as opposed to his mothers, which based on this passage were most likely to be round, soft, and "feminine"-looking. It's also interesting to see that if not for having his father's eyes, Luo Binghe's features would be "excessively feminine," therefore implying that the softer look applies to all parts of his face except for his eyes and brows.
(thanks to @furbygoblinxiv , @bijoumikhawal for bringing up this point)
So, Luo Binghe is a lithe and petite pretty-boy. Nonetheless, he is still notably muscular. Specifically with a surprising amount of lean muscle-- something that Shen Qingqiu actually remarks on:
Luo Binghe was on top, and Shen Qingqiu was on the bottom, so he was smushed under a considerable weight and almost unable to draw another breath. What had this child been eating?! He looked quite slim, so how was he this heavy?! ... A person’s abdomen is supposed to be the softest spot on their body, but Luo Binghe’s was uncomfortably hard against Shen Qingqiu’s stomach. The farther down he pulled him, the more he was sure that Luo Binghe had an eight-pack. Was that a rock slab down there? (7 Seas, Ch. 16)
(thanks to @verycharismaticdragon for bringing up this point)
As for where the fan depiction of buff, tanned, "hyper-masculine" Luo Binghe may have originated?
I'm not certain where the first such depiction came from, but as for the logic behind it, such phenomena could be explained as thinking of Luo Binghe, the stallion protagonist, as having an "ideal masculine" appearance.
For western audiences and beauty standards, this would certainly be that same sort of muscular, tall, with tanned skin and defined features. Naturally, when first thinking of what a "stereotype of an ideal man" would look like, these traits would come to mind to a western audience.
It is a bit different in eastern standards. While muscular appearances can still be favored, lean muscle is vastly, vastly preferred over bulky muscle, and fair skin, which represents elegance and status (as those with fair skin tones are perceived as those who are wealthy, and do not need to work outdoors) is preferred over tanned skin. This is, of course, a generalization-- but as a representation of ideal masculinity, Luo Binghe's appearance would also be a generalization.
Particularly, Luo Binghe's figure and appearance is described not as those favored by men for themselves, but as those favored aesthetically by women. Therefore, that gentle, refined appearance is a must.
While western vs eastern beauty standards may play a role in this, it is also possible that western vs eastern character design standards may also be coming into play. While in eastern character design, things such as color and style of clothing and hair play a very large role in creating visual contrast, in terms of western designs, body shape and style, along with hair shape and style, seem to be far more important, with the idea that a character should be recognizable by silhouette alone. This may lead to western-trained artists, and also those who grew up watching primarily western cartoons, unconsciously applying those same standards to their own design-- such as making Luo Binghe broader-shouldered and with rounder shapes, the "heroic" type character design, in contrast to sharper, narrower shapes for Shen Qingqiu, the "villain" type character design.
(thanks to @gaywarcriminals , @mu-qingfang-stan-account , @temporoom for bringing up this explanation)
One additional possible reason would be the potential for heteronormative/"het-coding" standards being applied to a gay relationship, where the gong is being given more "traditionally masculine" features in order to align with gender roles. This is something that is fairly common in BL/MLM shipping and designs in general, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that it might apply in some fashion to Luo Binghe's fan-design as well (Note, this does not apply to actual fem/masc mlm pairs, because those do exist and it isn't always about heteronormativity. This is specifically referring to taking characters with roughly similar build like SQQ and LBH and making their designs distinctly more masc/fem based on who tops and who bottoms).
(thanks to @mysteryteacup and @gurggggleburgle for bringing this up)
As for the true source of these design elements, it probably cannot be narrowed down to just one-- rather, it would be an amalgamation of bits and pieces of all of the above, as well as the popularity and spread of certain designs throughout the fandom and artists taking inspiration from one another.
So often i've seen that Luo Binghe's bulk and muscles are shown as key traits of his physical appearance, despite the fact that this directly contradicts his actual depiction in the novel. Thus, it is inaccurate to depict him this way.
Luo Binghe's canonical body type and build is tall, slender, and willowy with lean musculature, and his features are soft and a bit effeminate. The best example I could give for reference would be to base his body type off of a pretty-boy type idol.
Of course, fanartists are perfectly free to continue drawing him however they please, but it should not be assumed that a Luo Binghe with bulky musculature, tanned skin, and sharp features is a canon-compliant depiction.
Luo Binghe is a pretty-boy.

I'm on a flight to Tokyo, and I'm definitely going to stand out amongst the locals... what should I do?
I always have the greatest respect for visits to Asian countries myself. So it's more than natural that you need support. I myself have had very good experiences with a preset that I am sending you. I recommend that you activate the preset as soon as possible, the transformation is set to last 12 hours.
Okay, it's exemplary that you had your cell phone in flight mode, so the message only reaches you after the plane is already on the tarmac on its way to the terminal. With your seatbelt still fastened, you activate the default setting. After the first few seconds, the first effect becomes apparent. The tension is gone. This is not the first time you have landed in Haneda. Only tourists and fools jump up and open the luggage compartments before the seatbelt signs have gone out. You are disciplined. Discipline is the only way to survive a juggernaut like Tokyo. You know that. The idiots around you don't.
You say goodbye to the person sitting next to you. You say goodbye to the flight crew when you leave the plane. In broken Japanese. You struggle with the language. Even though you've been learning it for over a year. At least you recognize a few of the characters at the airport. At least you can understand fragments of the conversations around you. And you know your way around the airport. Even if you're not the first to jump on, you're one of the first at the baggage carousel. It pays to have a Japanese ID card. Wait a minute! A Japanese ID card? Sure, you've been living here for years. Tokyo is your second home. Naturalization was only logical. You have a Japanese great-grandmother. That made it easier. You inherited your black hair from her.
You look at the people with the big suitcases with pity. They're either going to waste a fortune on cabs now. Or they'll have real problems on the train during rush hour. You've packed efficiently. And your advantage is that you stand out from the crowd. 190 cm… That makes you a giant in Japan. And a colossus at 120 kg. When you finally take the steps from the subway into the open air, the default setting has already been active for three hours. You walk the last few meters to your hotel. It's so nice to be back here. Yes, you actually live in London. But you spend as much time as you can in Tokyo for business and pleasure. For years now. You speak the language very well, you're up to date with all the fashions and gossip. And a regular guest here at the hotel. The concierge addresses you by name. You greet him back by name. Nevertheless, you exchange business cards. Tradition is tradition. The building trembles. A slight earthquake. You don't know how many earthquakes this is in your life. It's not even worth mentioning in your conversation.
Now a quick bowl of noodle soup. And then to the gym. You've spent too much time motionless on the plane and in the subway. You need action now. The feeling that your body has given its last. And then a hot bath and a massage. Your buddy at reception has already arranged everything. You just quickly take your luggage upstairs and get changed. And then you run down the stairs to the gym. The earth has just shaken a little again. The last thing you need now is to get stuck in the elevator.
Two hours later, when Atsushi presses his elbows into your back, all is right with the world again. Atsushi is a master of his trade. And you've known each other for ages. In fact, you played baseball in the same club as children before you moved to Europe with your parents. It was a real coincidence when you found each other on one of your visits here on Grindr. It's one of the biggest and hardest reasons why you're staying here at the hotel. Rarely have you experienced a better masseur who is both good for your back and offers a first-class happy ending. He stands behind you and massages your neck. And his hard-on sticks out in front of your face. Shit, if he doesn't suck you off right away, you'll cum without him laying a hand on you.
You two spend the evening at karaoke. Unfortunately, Asushi can't stay in your hotel room tonight. But he will take you upstairs. And you fuck him as a thank you. Asushi thanks you with a deep kiss goodbye. He says that your education in Europe has paid off. Nobody fucks like real Japanese men who learned to fuck in Paris. You grin. Well. An almost real Japanese man. Your one grandmother was English. You owe your blue eyes to her.
Tumblr media
Get up, go to the gym, take a hot bath. That's how your next morning starts. Not easy with the jet lag. But you have to get back into the rhythm of the city of your ancestors quickly. The first meeting is at 07:30. Time is money. And life in Tokyo is not cheap. "それで、侍よ?よく眠れましたか?" Asushi sent a picture of his morning wood. You return the favor with a selfie, freshly showered. "よく眠れたよ!しかし、私には硬いものと柔かいものがある。疲れ果てた夜に備えよ," you reply. "はい、侍よ!" You're looking forward to the end of the day!

Tumblr media
A = Aftercare (what they're like after sex)
As he is a top, and matching Wujiu’s insatiable libido, he has trouble taking care of you after sex, as he would be exhausted. A few praises, wiping you down with the sheets, and he’s done. Had he more energy, you would receive the entire package - praises, cuddles, a nice hot bath.
B = Body part (their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner's)
That mouth of yours really can work, whether it’s moaning, or sucking his dick - what’s not to like? On himself, he quite likes his hands, how they touch you, feel your insides, and both give and deny your pleasure.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
Where he’ll cum depends on his mood - if he’s feeling nice, it’ll be over your stomach or back, but if he’s fucking you to release tension? Over your face, inside you, in your mouth, he doesn’t feel guilty if you choke on his cum.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He wants to have a threesome with you and Wujiu, to watch the two of you torture his lover, deny him his orgasms and tie him up, using him like a sex toy.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they're doing?)
As Wujiu being his lover, Bi’An has a lot of experience having sex with men - women, less so. But he does know where the clitoris is, and is a fast and thorough learner.
F = Favourite position (this goes without saying)
He loves to be above you, to be in a position where he’s got the power. Doggystyle, missionary, any position against the wall, etc.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
He’s serious person in sex, serious on getting your pleasure, and won’t be the one to crack any jokes in the moment.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes?)
His hair is naturally black in colour, as with many other Asians, so, when his hair is black, the carpet does indeed match the drapes. His pubic hair is well trimmed, slightly curly. He doesn’t mind whether or not his lover/s have pubic hair.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? are they romantic?)
During the moment, he’s going to be focused on your pleasure, in his own twisted way (if he denies your orgasm, it’s going to feel better when you do eventually cum) but he’s no means romantic. He’ll tell you you’re a good slut while caressing your tear-stained cheek, and looking at you fondly.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcannon)
Masturbating works if he’s trying to take the edge off, but not when he wants you beneath him, whimpering… in those moments, he itches for the real thing.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
Dacryphillia, or sexual arousal by tears, is one of his kinks - when he sees those tears prickling your eyes, he knows he’s doing a good job. There’s also, of course, orgasm denial, edging, bondage, all the works.
L = Location (favourite places to have sex)
The bedroom is where he has his toys, and where he’ll stay. It’s a quiet and private place, so he won’t need to worry about being disturbed.
M = Motivation (what turns them on?)
Definitely brat him. He wants the surge of dopamine when he finally breaks you, making you beg for your orgasm.
N = No (what turns them off?)
Scat, and things that relate to the solids that pass through your body. He’ll experiment, but not to that extent. Also, if you talk shit about Wujiu when he’s not there - any complaints will immediately turn him off.
O = Oral (do they prefer giving or receiving? how skilled are they?)
He loves to see you struggle to fit his cock in your mouth, and look up at him with tears in your eyes as he mercilessly fucks your mouth, but he doesn’t mind giving oral, either. He’s got a long tongue, and knows what he’s doing if you have a penis. For vaginas, however, he’s inexperienced and needs you to guide him.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual?)
He’s slow, but not sensual. Watching you unravel beneath him is what he lives for, and he’ll be as rough as he wants, unless you use the safe word, of course.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies)
He’ll suggest it, in the middle of a match, when he’s feeling it, but why have a quickie when you could have the real deal?
R = Risk (are they experimental? do they take risks?)
He’s an experimental guy - sex with Bi’An would never be boring - and that goes with taking risks as well. He trusts that the baron would interfere if any of his partners fell ill enough to prevent them from being in matches.
S = Stamina (how long do they last?)
He’ll go all night, if you let him, but he’d be more focused on you, not him. He can only last two rounds, but he’ll force himself to hold his cum if you want him to last a while.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them?)
He’s got vibrators, rope, the sorts, and will use them on both himself, and his sexual partners.
U = Unfair (how much do they like to tease?)
They call him the king of teasers - that’s how much he likes it. Although he can be intimate and gentle for a change, he prefers to keep sex exciting for all involved.
V = Volume (how loud are they?)
He’ll be inflicting your pleasure and pain, and sitting back on his heels to enjoy the show, so he won’t be gasping and moaning as much as you - mainly, he will be grunting and breathing heavily, aroused by your expression. His moans would be high and sweet.
W = Wild card (a random headcannon for the character)
Of course, there’s a time where he wants to bottom, when he wants to be tied up and for someone else to take the reins. Pull his hair, hold a knife to his throat, he’s open to all that stuff, although he won’t suggest that you manhandle him.
X = X-ray (let's see what's going on under those clothes)
It’s around seven inches, pale, and flushes darkly when aroused. It’s thin, long, and his balls are average sized.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
His sex drive is quite high, although lower than Wujiu’s. He won’t bother you if you don’t want it, and will either fuck his boyfriend’s brains out.
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
As he is one of the people doing the most work, that being the ‘giver’ in the sexual relationship, Bi’An would be quite exhausted and fall asleep quickly. Being in a sexual polyamorous relationship, he’s going to be asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.

So it's somehow the end of May? Not sure how that happened, even though I have been busy so of course the time has flown by! Things done this last month include hosting family multiple times, visiting my first cat café, visiting family, wedding reception, and baking my first rhubarb pie. Somehow I managed to fit 9 books and 2 DNFs in there, and was very good about not taking too many ARCs home. I didn't even buy anything!
Also, this is the first time I think I've ever underpacked physical books for a holiday. I thought for sure that the SF book I popped in my bag would last me at least three days but no, A History of What Comes Next was a fast read and lasted one. Thank goodness for Libby and my cache of T. Kingfisher e-novellas, is all I'm saying. Reading those back to back got my reading goal back on track for the year.
Novel is still progressing apace. Digger is still not shipped. It is reading outdoors weather but I've yet to do so. Nothing else to report.

Hello! I hope you're doing well!
There's this one thing I repeatedly see in BLs where I'm never sure if it's just me or if it's actually A Thing, and since you're the master of tropes, I figured you might know? It's this thing where the two main characters turn out to actually know each other from their childhood, and often both of them forgot about it, or one will remember and events from their shared childhood will be the reason or motivation for their interest in the other character now.
Today's episode of Big Dragon reminded me of this again, but there were also shows like Lovely Writer, Triage, Word of Honor, and (in a way) 2gether (if that counts, although it's not about childhood, and I don't remember much from that series). And We Best Love also did it, if I remember correctly (it's been too long since I've seen it and I really need to rewatch it).
Do you have any idea why this might be a thing in BL? Have you noticed it before? Or is it just me?
Thanks for your time!!
Ah it's not a thing in BL per say but it is a Thing in Asian dramas. So if your familiarity is with western romance narratives, you just might not realize. This trope (loved since childhood AKA the childhood crush) is in a lot of Asian romance dramas, not just BL. (Including the component where one has forgotten the initial meeting.)
I think it has a lot to do with a prevailing culture concept that to know someone first means not only to know them best (or better than others), but to have a greater right to their affection and attention.
The "I liked him first = I have a prior claim" concept. To have known a lover in childhood gives priority and preference to the nature of your affection (something cherished over time and having weathers the slings and arrows of adulthood). We love a piner. The longer the better.
Who has had the crush the longest carries a ton of weight in a crushers right to the crushie - so far as the narrative is concerned.
We can actually see a form of this in fandom and fan behavior. The idea that somehow having discovered a band, or having liked that one Kpop group longer than some other fan (or before they became famous) somehow makes you a better/superior fan, just because of longevity.
Back to childhood crushes and Asian dramas.
The burden of affection conferring obligation on the one who's being adored is also quite a common them. In other words, "I like you, therefore my feelings for you are now your responsibility."
I have theories this has to do with the importance of filial love in collectivist cultures conferring higher value on longer term affections. But also that affection carries with it an obligation of physical care of the kind that adults might give children (from wound tending, to feeding, to sponge baths and beyond). Romantic intimacy is tied to what we (the west) would often think of more as expressions of parental obligation and affection. Therefore to tie romantic interest into childhood, in the form of a childhood friendship or crush, meshes extremely well with a core concept of “what is romantic, or what comprises romantic gestures, as being also somewhat... parental.”
In BL we see this manifest as the seme often being the one with the long cherished (and acted upon) crush. The seme will also be handed the lion's share of the parental gestures of affection and care.
But it's not actually that uncommon in the western world. There is this is idea amongst friendship groups that "I liked him first, therefore you can't like him" - calling dibs or what have you. This is particularly common in early romantic relationships and younger friendship groups.
To have done a thing first carries tremendous weight of importance in the human psyche. We see "first by virtue of time" (as opposed to first by virtue of ability) cross culturally. It's like birth order. It's a status that anthropologists would call ascribed status (rather than achieved). I hope you can see how it might be particularly important in Asian cultures where to be older is to hold higher status no matter what, see linguistic honorifics.
To have loved longer, under these circumstances, is to hold higher status as a lover.
Tumblr media
I have seen one drama face up to and challenge this notion: Thumping Spike. It's a noona romance and the guy who wins the girl is NOT the one who has had the childhood crush. He challenges the one who does have it, by saying something like, "if we valued love by who loved the longest, I should be married to the local grocery lady."
All of which is to say, it's so common a trope it's been called out for its own tropeiness.

as noted in the application, stacie is described to be both a homebody and workaholic. she enjoys mundane, domestic things like cooking, cleaning, crochet, and embroidery. it offers a sense of calm and control that allows her to decompress from her work. on the contrary, she is a workaholic. she practically brings work everywhere with her. this, of course, is the nature of her job. stacie often is calm and composed out of necessity. if she isn’t, then she may end up making her client anxious and act out. as a pr agent, she knows that would cause more messes. due to her work, stacie is a very private person. she doesn’t open up a lot and keeps things to herself most of the time. outside of work and work related events, she’s often seen alone. while it is a good thing for her to relax, at times it does get lonely especially because she is too exhausted to go out with friends. despite everything, stacie is an incredibly loyal person. she will drop everything for her friends and family, especially as someone who cherishes platonic relationships. she also has a strict set of morals and beliefs which has caused her to jump around pr agencies and clients for a while. she also is noted to have high standards by her friends and be high maintenance, but stacie knows what she wants in a partner.

viv is someone who knows what they want. he’s tenacious and ambitious, refusing to give up on something they desire. such an attitude is beneficial but also detrimental. on one hand, he’s extremely dedicated to his work. they get the job done and they are a reliable person. this even extends to domestic activities and chores. however, because viv is so work oriented, it becomes hard to separate his personal life and his work life. there’s nothing wrong with blending the two of course! but it does get exhausting because it appears that all they can talk about is his work. it also leaves them to be fatigued a lot of the time and they rarely take time out for themselves. he is easy to get along with however and considered to be very charming. viv is pretty funny and he’s also caring, willing to take time off to take care of his friends and family. he is, however, extremely modest to a point that it frustrates all of his friends. they tend to downplay their own achievements and themselves as a person. viv is also a cautious person and super clean. they’re always insistent on properly disinfecting everything. happens when you work in a field like virology.

Me watching Laws of Attraction Ep. 5:
1. After two days of not being able to watch, I can finally sit back and continue this series 😭😭😭😭 Starting with Charn accusing the friendly neighbours as traitors (specifically, the brave lady from previous episode, Nam). I don't buy this. I still maintain that Charn's assistant (Wit) is highly sus.
2. Oh, wait. So, Nam DID sold Tin out??? I still have a hard time believing it. I think she's telling the truth about trying to set the reporter straight (which, unfortunately backfired). But I don't think she's the one who reveal all of Charn's cards to Thattep.
3. Charn, you and Tin just reconciled. Don't mess things up.
4. OMG. Tonkhao's bestie is also using the doll in public 😭😭😭 I hope Thattep does not find her (and the doll) first.
5. Grandma still captaining the ship, apparently 😅 Sidenote, I don't think I like this transition. We just saw Tin and Charn arguing about each other beliefs and morals, next thing we see Charn is in Tin's bedroom with an almost naked and newly bathe Tin. From a plot's perspective, it doesn't make much sense that they (especially Tin) are more than okay with each other's company (and flirting) again. 😑 Don't get me wrong, the scenes are cute. It's just that I think the timing (or editing) is wrong.
7. Charn is, opportunistic, to put it nicely. He just needs to channel that talent into good use. However, his cynicism is hindering him from looking at things from a (morally) positive angle.
8. I have said this from the very first episode: GIVE US CHARN'S FULL BACKSTORY, GAWD DAMMIT. I am this close 🤏 to googling spoilers 😭😭😭
9. Ms Club Owner and the gorgeous Silvy (in hot pink) side-eyeing Charn throughout the whole phone conversation is 😂😂😂 Also, Charn called Ms Club Owner, "auntie". Is he really her nephew? Because y'know, us Asians can call any female "auntie" (even complete strangers) without batting an eyelash 😂😂😂
10. Noooo, Charn. Don't leave Tonkhao's things in the open like that with Wit. 😭😭😭
11. Wit asking questions about the doll just heightens my suspicions towards him. So, yeah Charn, take your own advice and don't trust anyone, especially Wit.
12. I feel bad for Chai. I mean, wasn't it enough that they made him a fallguy? He needed to be killed too? The fvck. Also, the calculated way that Charn sacrificed this man's life to draw out the mole is every bit disgusting.
13. Thattep's reasoning. I cannot. 🤯🤯🤯🤯 What a sh*tty father. So, the reason why his own son is his first choice to be the fallguy is because it is a given that he will get away with it (just a probation, guys. No biggie /s)? He would rather have his son wrongfully labeled as criminal to what end???
14. Tanthai getting gaslit and made to believe that he caused two innocent people killed should be the bodyguard's cue to switch sides and tell the truth to protect his young master.
15. I KNEW IT. Then again, the series made it obvious that Wit cannot be trusted. Okay, I did not anticipate the gun(s), the action scenes, or that office fire/explosion that followed. Still, 😂😂😂😂
16. Not sure why the office exploded, honestly. I get it is for dramatic effect (and ensures that Wit is truly dead). But then again, from a realistic point of view, that sh*t shouldn't have happened unless Charn was keeping something that is highly explosive in HIS LAW OFFICE.
17. Grandma has a glow-up courtesy of Silvy (Maya) in a gorgeous 1920s-inspired fit. At this point, I seriously should start a Silvy fan club lol.
17. After the night's excitement, forgive me if I'm eyerolling Tin's highly questionable timing to flirt with Charn. 🙄🙄🙄
18. Mr. Bodyguard, sir, get an effing clue. At this point, I will not be surprised if Tanthai tries to un-alive himself.
19. Grandma being supportive of TinCharn's happiness is 🥺🥺🥺
20. Charn sleeps exactly like my two-year old nephew, right to the part of kicking anybody who shares the bed 😂😂😂😂 His parents learnt to sleep the very edge of the bed - sideways lol
21. Hold up. I think Wit is already effed up in the head, even without Charn's influence. He just got emboldened by Charn's very lax and questionable take on justice.
22. Wait, did Tonkhao's bestie moved to the town where Charn's traumatic past happened??? <after five seconds> Yep, there it is. Also, did the government has something to do with Charn's mum's death???
23. Charn's disgusting morals rears its ugly head again. Seriously, I wanted Ms Club Owner to slap him hard so he can get back to his senses.
It's official. I am having a love-hate fascination with Charn. He is so desperate to play an anti-hero that is almost pathetic, not to mention downright depressing. Will I get to finally see Charn's backstory in the next episode? I really hope so.

I Watched Barbie, Felt Empowered...& Then The Afterparty Sucked
Well, I watched Barbie Wednesday night with my 2 girlfriends. M is delicate, petite, knows 4+ languages (including Mandarin Chinese which seems like the hardest one to master!). C is sassy, bold, athletic and vibrantly colorful with a mean punch (she boxes literally every single day!). They are both successful, living alone in a high cost of living city, with their own businesses or their own career that affords them real estate. We range in age from early thirties to early forties, but all look about the same age if you glance at us (they are beautiful!).
I provide that very important context to segue into the next part of this post which will be about the fact that we went to a Barbie themed nightclub after the fact and it visually and emotionally took away all the empowerment aspects of the movie that we had just felt. The girls were beautiful (STEREOTYPICAL BARBIE BEAUTIFUL, MIGHT I ADD). They were dressed in skimpy one piece thong bikinis with tights and push up bras, all a perfect teeny tiny body with boobs and big blonde wigs on. The men were dressed as Kens (shorts and a shirt). There were special coconut drinks set up on a table that upon approaching the table, we were quickly notified that the drinks were "for influencers only." WHAT! What. Whaaaat. What has this world come to. The DJs for the night were two itty bitty Asian twins called the Deux twins, wearing high cut bikinis (they were cute, obviously, but could we not just enjoy them for their music instead of sexualizing them too?). Women go-go dancers danced provocatively on the side walls wearing barely-there bathing suits. The men that worked there stood still, demanding respect and space, mean mugging the crowd, meanwhile they got to cover their bodies fully wearing suit and tie outfits in their role as security. In broad daylight I think many of the people we encountered would probably have feigned non judgmental natures, or a false saccharin kindness to hide their true thoughts. Drunk, in a nightclub, you become subjected to the truthful, dark, true opinions people harbor towards each other. Unprompted, a girl that could barely stand up as she passed by me, told me to delete a picture I took of my friend C because she said "Ewww, that photo is so ugly, don't even think about keeping that picture." Wait, aren't females supposed to be on the same team here? What's with the spontaneous woman on woman hate? Later that night, a guy who bought me drinks confessed to me "you have one of the top 5 best personalities I have met in this city, but it's a shame guys won't get to know that because of your bigger exterior. I would go for you, but if I'm being completely honest... I get any girl I set my sights on, and I am going to set my sights on a skinny, healthy, fertile 25 year old girl instead of you, that's just my type." Not sure why he was confused when I decided to leave his company immediately after that statement. "Wow, after I bought you those drinks too?" He muttered angrily as I walked away, completely missing the point of his idiocy.
needless to say I left that night just feeling appalled at the general state of humanity. I have thick skin, so I didn't cry myself to sleep but- it got me thinking...all of these internalize ideals that we outwardly reject in movies and say we don't believe in or judge others against--- are we just in denial? Do we ... or some of us...secretly still harbor these unrealistic westernized ideals for beauty standards as the bar we set other up against? Or do we consider the whole person and their lived experiences equally as much as their exterior like we so often claim to do??

Joseph Allred — For the Fallen Dawn (Island House)
Tumblr media
For the Fallen Dawn by Joseph Allred
The prolific Joseph Allred is back with a cassette and digital collection of instrumental soli for various stringed instruments. Sounding largely improvisatory and bathed in environmental sounds and warm recording hiss, this set highlights Allred’s increasingly sophisticated technique and ability to create music that seems simultaneously ancient, contemporary, and timeless. A sense of discovery propels these eight tracks, which range from around two to ten minutes each, as if each reveals a winding, verdant pathway.
Several tracks seem to be played on the lute, an instrument with which Allred has previously experimented and now seems to have mastered as a means to express their musical ideas. “Neither Seeking nor Finding,” the first track, for instance, finds the sweet spot between Renaissance Europe and Takoma Park, Maryland, favored by Robbie Basho in recordings such as The Grail and the Lotus. Even more so than Jozef van Wissem, Allred transcends the distinctive medieval associations of the instrument.
Some of the other tunes are apparently played on a nylon-string guitar. On “Leaves Dancing in the Air,” “Red and Gold Colors Burning,” and “The Prowling Mists and Rain Conspired,” Allred also alternates arpeggios with flamenco-like flourishes, their fingers lingering over rich harmonies. The playing here is somewhat in the style of Peter Walker (or James Blackshaw on Holly) but, as always, unmistakably Allred.
“Izana,” “Ladysthumb,” “The Gods Were Stern and Old,” and “None Are Born or Die,” on the other hand, sound as if they are played on an East Asian instrument such as a shamisen or da ruan (but could be a fretless gut-string banjo), with the spaces between the notes letting in plentiful insect and bird chatter.
For the Fallen Dawn is further evidence of Allred’s ability to produce high-quality recordings in rapid succession. The range of instruments on display is, of course, impressive, but more impressive is their harnessing to the musician’s unique vision. Part of what distinguishes Allred from forebears such as Basho is the linear nature of their playing on this and previous releases. Instead of repetition, the usual verses and choruses, their approach favors development—hence the pathway metaphor above. This is a great start to 2023 for Allred!

Barbarissima and the Quest for the Golden Tofu
The next chapter in Barbarissima's gastronomic adventures takes her far from the familiar rolling hills of Lombardia to the vibrant landscapes of Asia, on a quest that tantalizes the taste buds and teases the intellect. Her journey begins when a mysterious letter arrives, scented with lemongrass and sealed with a jade stamp. It contains an ancient tale of a legendary recipe for the 'Golden Tofu'—a dish said to hold the flavors of the entire continent within its delicate, golden-hued curds.
The recipe, however, is not simply recorded on paper but is said to be etched into the walls of a hidden temple, located in a remote valley where soybeans grow as tall as trees. These beans, kissed by both sun and moon, are the key ingredient in the Golden Tofu, and only a dish prepared with these beans can reveal the ultimate culinary enlightenment.
From the bustling markets of Bangkok to the misty mountains of Sichuan, Barbarissima's palate leads the way. She encounters monks who meditate on the essence of flavor, chefs who wield cleavers as if they were brushes painting with the finest strokes, and farmers whose ancestors cultivated the first soybeans.
But the quest for the Golden Tofu is shrouded in enigma. Barbarissima must decipher a series of riddles and challenges set by the 'Guardians of Flavor', each a master of different Asian cuisines. She engages in a sushi roll-off in Tokyo, a spice identification trial in the markets of Mumbai, and a kimchi fermentation race in Seoul.
As Barbarissima journeys deeper into the heart of Asia, she learns that the Golden Tofu is more than a mere recipe; it symbolizes harmony in diversity, blending the many flavors and traditions of Asian cultures into a single, perfect bite. The true test, she realizes, is understanding and respecting the delicate balance of ingredients, much like the balance of the diverse cultures she encounters.
In the climactic scene, within the ancient soybean temple, Barbarissima must prepare the Golden Tofu under the watchful eyes of the Guardians. As the golden curds set, so too does the sun on the horizon, bathing the valley in a golden glow that reflects the unity and connection of all things.
Barbarissima returns to Lombardia with not just a new recipe, but a renewed spirit of culinary adventure, ready to infuse her next polenta creation with the exotic flavors and wisdom of Asia, proving once again that food is the universal language that connects us all.
