Luca was irritated when Eva and Ben finally showed up in the shuttle bay.

“I thought you wanted to go,” he hissed at her approach. “Where were you?”

“Checking in,” she said, giving him a pointed look and Luca knew instantly Eva meant the Captain. She swept past him as she headed towards the shuttle and he hurried to catch up.

“Evie, wait. There’s been a change of plans.”

Eva stopped so abruptly that Luca almost ran smack into the back of her. He still ended up with a mouthful of pink hair just the same. 

“What do you mean?”

Luca waited the scant few beats until Ben joined them then they stood close so they could speak without being overheard. Hema’s crew was still trailing them, watching them with hard eyes and downturned mouths and Luca made a mental note to tell Hema to order them to back off.

“We’re not taking the shuttle,” he said, avoiding Ben’s eye even though he was standing directly in front of the vanguard. It was shame that made him look away. The hazy memory of the way Ben had flinched replaying like a bad holo in the back of Luca’s mind until his insides churned. Luca wanted to reach for him, tug Ben somewhere quiet and trail his lips over the phoenix in silent apology but something held him back.

“The Revel is going to dock directly on the planet now.”

“Why?”

Luca shrugged. “To pick up the cargo, I guess. It would be easier than ferrying it from the surface in shuttles. I don’t know, Kira just told me that a few minutes ago. Does it even matter?”

“Luca,” Eva took his arm and drew him closer to her. He didn’t fight it but he tensed under her touch. He couldn’t help feeling hurt that she didn’t trust his judgement on this. On Hema. “What do you really know about what Hema does? What he transports? Has he ever told you?”

“Not this again,” he muttered. His irritation flared and his stomach rolled unhappily. He yanked his arm back roughly, expecting Eva to hold fast to him but she let him go without effort and his movement ended up more dramatic than it needed to be. Eva’s eyes flashed with hurt at his tone.

Great, Luca thought dejectedly. Now he was being awful to her too. Why was he acting like this?

“I don’t know why you think there’s something so sinister going on with him,” Luca finally blurted out, frustrated and tired. He couldn’t shake the sense it was all slipping away from him. For all his talk about doing this job on his own, he knew he wouldn’t get far without Eva and Ben at his back. He just... needed them to understand. “I mean, we know he’s not… above board, right? Look at where we are, look at what we’re doing. But it’s Hema. I’ve known him since I was a kid and… He’s never hurt me, okay.”

Eva’s silence screamed disbelief, and it made Luca’s head pound more. “He never hurt me,” Luca insisted but Eva shook her head.

“Tea,” Ben interrupted, a tilt of his head that made his eyes catch the light in that unique way of his. Luca forced himself not to shy away from his gaze now. The urge to climb into Ben’s arms was almost too overwhelming to ignore.

Luca gave his head a small shake, trying to focus. “What?”

“The tea,” Ben said patiently then he tapped his temple. “Make you not think right.”

“It’s u’dnut,” Luca muttered. “It’s a drell thing from Hema’s home world. Just tea. Makes me a little sleepy sometimes. It always helped when I-” Luca cut himself off.

“Maybe he’s never hurt you in a way you understand,” Eva said quietly. “But… Luca, something isn’t right here.”

“What does that even mean? And how are you so... so sure?”

“Because we… we can feel it, Lulu.”

“Right,” he said flatly, stepping back. His nerves were suddenly too frayed, his bad temper too loud. “Because you guys are the super heroes and I’m just... an ordinary naive little human, right? Got it. Well, I’m going to go take my ordinary naive little human ass to the mess to get something to eat then find a place to sleep. Hema says we’ll be in Tortuga orbit and then on the surface in six hours. And before you chew me out for that too, the Kodiak would have taken us twelve. Since I know you’re in a hurry to get this over with and back to the Berlin and all. So. You’re welcome.”

Luca offered them a sarcastic little bow that didn’t feel nearly as good as it should have and spun on his heel. His head pounded and his eyes burned hotly as he strode towards the door.
