Ascanio Maria Sforza: la parabola politica di un cardinale-principe del Rinascimento, Marco Pellegrini

Julius II: The Warrior Pope, Christine Shaw
and on della rovere’s soldier comment:
Tumblr media
Popes, Cardinals and War: The Military Church in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe, D.S. Chambers
and finally! regarding the delightful Mess of political-family relationships, including the marriage comment (altho the montefeltro family that giovanni married into did have sforza family ties, since giovanna's mother was battista sforza, but this is about the more immediate alliance based relationship and della rovere's hand in the rejection of a milanese match for his brother. and. this is not even remotely a serious comic, but now I am once again thinking about insular all these families are. the fucking medicis are here too, if you go half a step to the left on della rovere's family tree)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Julius II: The Warrior Pope, Christine Shaw
Tumblr media
Giulio II, Il papa del Rinascimento, Giulio Busi (Bianca Maria Visconti is Ascanio's mom. btw)
panel inserts of the cards they're playing with are all from the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck! (I used public domain scans/photos for the comic itself)

Okay but can we all collectively agree that Peter Sullvian's Ascanio Sforza in The Borgias always seems to be only one step away from glancing at the camera like he's in The Office?

You know what...
Tumblr media
Fuck it.
Life is too short.
I just re-read that story of mine and it's too sweet to relegate towards DMs. I like their coupling, and I really liked this show. It appealed to my obsession about Renaissance Italy. Caterina Sforza is my spirit animal.
Tumblr media
You like my writing? Then you have to familiarize yourself with the Renaissance. The Serpent Queen is/was a current show devoted to similar themes (so was the Medici show, but that was fucking awful compared to...), but the show I wrote for was Neil Jordan's Showtime show, The Borgias.
Tumblr media
The big story was called 'Cardinal Pleasures', and it was about Cardinal Ascanio Sforza's illicit affair with Lucrezia Borgia (and there is no show canon for this, however it still can fit in canon quite well...and like all older men that I feature in my stories, I had/have a thing for grumpy Cardinal Sforza/Peter Sullivan 🫠).
I am
Tumblr media
Yes, it's age gap (but Lucrezia is 17, I think, when they get together, and by then she's already been married off to and SA'ed routinely by her husband, Giovanni Sforza...and she has a child by the stableboy she had an affair with at the time). Ascanio was 40 when they got together, and the main story is not overtly smutty (and even the smuttiest part in the extras is pretty mild/tame compared to what I usually write).
Tumblr media
I also wrote REAL smut with Cesare x Lucrezia (down at the bottom, the Bound By Blood tryptych...the second one is the smut). This is the real E/NC-17 one (Cardinal Pleasures rates an R for violence and sex/incest, but not really explicit sex). Their incest is canon, Third Season...they sleep together on her wedding night to Alfonso because Alfonso is too much of a little boy at heart, and Cesare had always been her bae since Season 1 (so...much...sexual tension...throughout the whole show).
I also wrote two screenplays for their Season 4, but all of my notes for the rest of it (as well as my other Borgia writings) were destroyed when my ex (and fkn heinous building manager) removed and trashed all of my belongings from my apartment when I was on a retreat in Rome. I had to get my fans to lend me money to rush back (I paid them all back), only to find the only thing left in here was my dog (and he was scared shitless in his open crate with nothing else around him). I didn't have the will to continue after the notes were gone, but maybe someday in the future, after a re-watch, I might be inspired. (I also never got to write the Civil War-era Borgias thing I was going to do...and that saddens me.) You can d/l the .pdfs of the screenplays from the link...a couple of actors from The Borgias featured in the scripts liked them on Twitter. 💀 I have but one typo in the second one. Hey man, I don't have Betas. I do everything myself in the end, even if I have someone read it over. And the first script has a non-script version/prose version. I didn't get around to doing that for the second script.
Unfortunately I can no longer re-watch on Netflix...they moved it all to Paramount Plus, which I don't have rn. If you do, and you like lush, dramatic, UNDERRATED period pieces, give it a watch.
Anyhoo, here's the direct link to Cardinal Pleasures. It's not a massive monster like Afterburn. Shouldn't take but an hour or so to finish if you're a fast reader, maybe more or less if you count the three extra birthday-themed fics I wrote for @brenli for her birthday. No idea what the word count is since it's only published here on Tumblr and not AO3.
Happy reading...hope you know some Latin 👹 (go grab your translator app).

Cesare: So why we should now make common cause with Milan [after it let France pass through their lands earlier]? Rodrigo: Because, when the French have left this fair paradise, the Milanese will still be with us. Cesare: So? Rodrigo: This league cannot beat the French… even in their weakened state. And I doubt the French can beat this league. So if the two armies batter each other to death, as the lawyers often say, cui bono? Cesare: Who benefits? Rodrigo: Mm. A weakened Milan, a weakened Venice, a weakened Mantua- has to be worth a weekend in Tuscany, surely?

"comes out of the coffin with a hot tea"
I HAVE AN IDEA! Stupid one... but still one! Another one of Desmond's being thrown into the past, but this time the apple has read too much about fainting Victorian women and made him in some sort sickly (We can make it as a backlash to almost dying and his burned arm). I mean.... what can i say! I just love the duality of a character that in one moments seems like a breeze can knock them down and in the next they win against you with only a stick in hand!
"sips some tea"
That would also made a good cover for Desmond! If he was trying to not put himself under the radar of his ancestors of course. Who would believe that the most sickly man in -put a city name here- is able to clime roofs, fight off the guards and also win without a scratch? Maybe Connor? Malik? Who knows! :D
"throws the coffin out the window and leaves through the door "
(stares the window for a moment… well, okay. I mean… I have no idea how a coffin could fit thru that but okay)
I mean… if you really want Desmond to have some kind of handicap of the ‘sickly’ kind, may I suggest the setup for “The Villainess's Days Are Numbered!” where the main character’s HP keeps getting depleted? This means... even taking one step gives him a -1HP penalty and stressful times (or any time he overexerts himself) gives him a double HP reduction penalty (which means that -1HP turns to -2HP). Oh, and his default HP is only 1210 and he can gain a max HP reduction if the circumstances call for it)... maybe even go down as far as 200 max HP, hhhhmmm?
This means we have the ‘joy’ of making Desmond have to maintain his HP XD
So Desmond has to be bedridden to keep his HP up before he does any ‘stunts’.
It would be funny if we place him in a very awkward position too.
For example…
Third Crusades? He’s one of Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn’s children. Hell, he could be the son who took over Ḥalab so we have an excuse to place him during the time of Altaïr’s Chronicles.
Renaissance Italy? Make him the ‘child’ of one of the many clergymen against Rodrigo becoming pope to give an excuse for Ezio to ‘know’ of him. Bonus points? Make him a relative of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza
American Revolution? One of the Schuyler children (Philip Schuyler has a lot but you can pick one of the Schuyler sisters if you want to make this a Hamilton reference or if you just want Desmond to be part of all that drama in general XD)
The main point is… Desmond has to maintain his sickly body, all the while making plans how to screw up the timelines without anyone noticing it.

wethepope:
Tumblr media
He had heard talk of this young man. They called him devout, they called him worthy. And yet it was not the young man’s faith that he regarded as such a strong factor in the necessity of having him here in the Holy City. There was more to it than what met the eye. As all of his plans he set out with a determination of expansion. And if they were able to tame the wild in the Americas. They would surely be able to make friends with the men that this one came from. He was eager to know secrets, eager to know what it was that drove them. And if they would convert. Very much like the church of many, many generations prior he sought of the conversion vigorously. The more friends the safer he would be. His logic seemed to be intelligent. And yet his insides were waning with fear. He allowed the young man a private audience. Something his son was quite against. 'He could kill you,' Cesare had said. And yet he was more than determined to allow the man to believe he trusted him, he was honored to have him not only as a guest to the Holy City but also as a friend. He had the young man escorted once he had heard about his arrival, offered the finest rooms in the Vatican, made to feel like a king whereas he knew that he was only a messenger. Shooting the messenger brought war. Surely opening his arms wide for him would bring friendship. He sent for the man. Eager to make his acquitance, to bestow on him a cardinals hat and make him apart of this Holy Church. They were to celebrate a Roman dance with he and the Vikings with the cardinals ; he would be Odin and Athelstan a wolf. The church was always in need of more souls to save, more souls to be added on. He couldn't feel he really trusted the cardinals, other than Ascanio Sforza, a mild mannered well-spoken man, yet assured of his family at least, of sweet Lucrezia, his angel of heaven, as well as cardinal fighter Cesare, and soldier Juan. And Borgia was always in need of more allies. Cesare didn't trust Ascanio's mellow manner, liked Giuliano Della Rovere's cunning, while knowing he was their enemy.
Tumblr media
Athelstan and the other Vikings had arrived here in Rome, and heard about the Pope’s request to speak to him face-to-face. Athelstan discussed about this curious but not unwelcome proposal, with the Vikings, and more so with Ragnar. Eventually, they drew the conclusion that this may be something that could benefit both parties. Of course, it seemed logical that Athelstan was to be the voice, the person to evoke peace between both parties. He surmised this was because he could speak English perfectly, along with several other languages. He misses being with Ragnar and his family he grew to love in Kattegat, yet knowing they were still present, he touching his arm ring. The Vatican palace that he was escorted to, was grand and exquisitely elaborate ; glowing golden in its illumination -- sunlight streaming through the window ( warming his body of hollow blood sickness ), and so was the room he had been generously granted for his stay here. It had white branches of trees by the window. It additionally held indescribably beautiful artworks, like men with wide bird wings, with feathers. Some of them reminded him a bit of the ones he learnt about in the court of Charlemagne. He paused for a moment to admire them before the Pope’s escorts kindly urged him to continue on. He finally reached the throne room which the Pope was residing in. He paused when he was a few feet away from the throne steps. Kneeling down to the ground, he bows his head respectfully towards the Pope.
“Holy Father. My name is Athelstan. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
"And we find it a pleasure to meet you, Athelstan," Rodrigo says in his sonorous voice. They speak about alliance, he handing him a red elaborate hat, and Athelstan thinks a cardinal would surely be different to a monk, as he touches the felt, yet both were with god.
